The car has a rattling sound on start up and I read here that is the timing chain tensioner. The quotes for fixing it has been huge(from 900-2000 just for labor).
And I changed front struts and had Monroe put on the car, the ride is very soft and a bit bouncy. I had a 2004 Altima and the ride was very stiff and I loved it. By the way, the car is a 2006 V6 with 111000miles.
I recently purchased a 2006 Hyundai Azera which has developed a rattling sound upon cold start up. Based on service bulletin 06-20-002 I believe the issue is with the timing chain tensioners. I am looking at getting a DNJ TK147 timing set kit to replace them with. Do this kit contains the updated tensioners? It is located on rockauto.
View 4 RepliesMy 2003 Sante Fe has developed a rattling sound in the engine. The oil level has been good. I took it to a dealer for diagnoses and they told me that the engine was gunked up and the timing "chain" tensioner couldn't move to keep it tight and it was rattling. They put some engine cleaner in and changed the oil and wanted me back in 500 to clean it again. I did that again, but the rattle is still there. It gets a little quieter after I have driven it for a while.
My question is doesn't the Sante Fe have a timing belt? If that is the case what do you think the rattle is?
Changing timing chain tensioner? Mine is making the rattling noise on startup. Tried searching one internet for any DIY's out there. Haven't really found any good ones.
View 7 RepliesYesterday i went to mechanic and changed Timing chain tensioners, with chains and all guides. But still have 2 second voice on startup, once oil pressure lights off everything fine. I paid heavy price on parts and labour but very disappointed after hear same noise again today morning which i was listening from one year purchase of this car... Sonata 3.3l v6 ....
View 4 RepliesMy 2006 2.4l Sonata automatic has just past the 100000km mark and developed a rattle on start-up. Opened it up and the chain has stretched beyond limit of the tensioner and has destroyed the adjacent oil spray nozzle that sprays oil on the sprocket.
This should be a lifetime item? No abnormal usage, normal city driving, all services done, never run low on oil-strange or not. Why this has happened.
I have a 2011 santa fe limited with the 3.5 and 35k miles that has a noisy timing chain rattle upon start up after sitting for a few hours,it's my understanding that the cause is no oil pressure to the tensioner because the oil drains back into the oil pan after sitting for a while. Is there a solution for this situation like a spring loaded tensioner-it seems to me that replacing the tensioner and chain does not solve the problem.
View 32 RepliesMy 2003' Explorer XLT (4.0L V6) has an oil leak. I tracked it down to the passenger side, rear, bolt head on the valve cover (back by firewall). I took it to a guy who replaced the valve cover gaskets, but it is still leaking. He claimed when he had the cover off he looked for any cracks on it, but did not see any at the time.
Anyways, I was searching around and found several explorers leaking in or around the same area of the valve cover. And it turned out that there issue stemmed from bad timing chain guides, causing the valve cover to crack.
I do notice that on a cold start, I hear a rattling when I first start it up. It rattles for maybe that first 1-2 seconds when starting. Is this my timing chain rattling around? If that is the case, how much this could set a guy back on repairs?
I guess I don't know whether to just replace the valve cover, or if I should dig into it to see if the real issue is the timing chain guides/tensioner. Mileage is approximately 121,000....
My son's 2007 Hyundai Sonata had an engine noise that was eventually diagnosed as bad timing chain tensioners. However, one Hyundai dealer repeatedly denied the problem, so it was 8 months before another Hyundai dealer admitted it and changed the tensioners. A couple of months later, the engine light and oil light were on and he was told he needed a new oil pump. By this time, the warranty had expired and he had to pay for the new oil pump and eventually a new engine. My question is this: Could the failure of the oil pump have had anything to do with the timing chain tensioner problem?
View 19 RepliesI recently bought a 98 CE with about 80k miles for my commuter car. Overall I am very please with it but today I started hearing a metallic type chattering sound from the left side of the engine (looking from the front). Sounds to me like the timing chain is slightly loose and maybe the cause of the sound but when I search all the auto pats websites it doesn't show a timing chain tensioner. So do I have a belt or a chain? What the sound is? it doesn't do it continuously but it does seem to only start when the engine is warmed up and at idle. I did a compression test and all the cylinders are in the ballpark so Im hoping that's means my valves aren't taping.I cant imagine it would have lasted this long if the valves were taping (driven it about 500 miles so far).
View 14 RepliesI have a 2006 Honda CRV with 145,000 miles on it. It has been giving me warning lights for about 10 weeks. My mechanic discovered that it is burning oil, which he says all old cars do. But the lights continued. He put the computer on it and says that I need a new timing chain and it will cots $1,100.00. He also says he's not 100% sure that this will stop the lights. I don't want to sink that kind of money into the car if it won't correct the problem. The lights that come on are the check engine light, the VSA light and the triangle light. They do not come on all of the time. Maybe 3 time a week but they go off if I stop the car and re start it.

Checked all of the belts i could see..no problems. Car wouldn't start after this...and all i could hear was a clicking sound. Pulled 6 codes for the car including bad speed sensor and a misfire, as well as bad EGR...i think the timing chain/belt broke..but i can't access it.

View 1 RepliesI have a 2008 Hyundai Sonata GLS 2.4L with 131,000 miles on it. When I accelerate from a stop, there is a buzzing/rattling/grinding noise coming from the engine bay of my car. It's really hard to describe, there is a definite buzzing sound, but also almost like there is a bolt rattling around and banging into things. This only happens for a couple of seconds. It also seems to be worse when I'm accelerating up hill. If I accelerate slowly from a stop, the noise does not occur, and it also does not occur if I accelerate while I'm already moving.
View 4 RepliesI had the front timing chain cover replaced, ever since it hasn't started. It would turn over fast a couple times and then drag and then repeat.
Found out the "Tone ring" was warped, it's been replaced and now it just turns over and over and no start but it doesn't drag anymore.
We can smell the fuel, and pulled a plug and can see spark while turning over and I was told fuel came out the plug hole so there is fuel there.
Tried a new cam sensor, crank sensor and battery and no change. Is there something else in the removal and replacement of the front timing chain cover that could be causing this?
I'm not a huge believer in coincidence as the vehicle was running great before this job.

When I'm driving over sharp bumps I hear what sounds like a small chain jingling around. I took off the hubcaps and jacked up the car to see if anything loose. I grabbed the exhaust pipe and shook it, but it didn't make any noise. I couldn't see anything that would cause it. The front right strut's rubber cover is off so could the strut make that noise?
I just read a few posts with similar problems, but one was a compression sound and another was a knock, and another was a metallic hick up. Mine is literally like a loose high pitch chain noise and change rattling in your pocket. No uniformity to the sound. But it also only happens over quick small bumps not large ones like speed bumps.
I recently bought a 2006 Hyundai Sonata 3.3 V6. Had another issue related to the rear wheel, which I fixed. Today, I changed the oil filter on the car (along with the oil). I have heard this engine noise before, but with the cover off it appears a little louder. It's basically a ticking sound.
The engine uses no oil, and has no other leaks. It has some noise on startup for maybe 1-2 seconds (like a loud lifter or something, but it goes away in less than 2 seconds, and at the same time the oil light goes out). I changed the filter today because I was told that a leaky gasket could result in the Filter not retaining oil between starts, causes some minor knock for a few seconds.
But anyway, this other ticking noise seems to be regular, regardless of condition. I have heard some people say that some engine noise is normal for this engine, but how about this?
I brought my 2004 VW Touareg V6(83k miles) to the dealer for a recall on the ignition call and much to my surprise, was presented with a diagnosis of a $6,000 problem! The dealer told me that the computer read some codes which say that the timing chain is stretched and needs to be replaced. They said it will take 4-5 days and should be done asap so it doesn't "go out", because if it does, it's an even more expensive problem. I took the car to another VW repair shop and they asked me if I heard any noised when I start it cold (like pebbles in a bucket). I have not had any problems like that at all, so they said I shouldn't worry until I start getting symptoms. They also said there is no recommended point (like 90,000 miles) when VW recommends the change, so it really shouldn't be a common problem. I want to do the right thing, but I don't want to rush into an expensive repair if it isn't necessary.

I am ready to install the new oil pump balance shaft unit but cannot find where the timing marks on the pump pulley and crank should be? The service manual I bought simply says the correct position is critical. Any position or a simple diagram or link? It is a chain drive pump.
View 1 Repliesso with the weather turning cooler i have noticed a new noise. i am at 34,000 miles and run synthetic oil ever 4-5k miles.
I hear a rattling/knocking noise when you start engine, not right away, but like after 15 seconds and it lasts about 30 seconds then seems to go away and is quiet again.
Almost sounds like a lifter is tapping due to not getting oil.
I changed the accessory belts a while ago and it did not first make this noise right after but maybe a few days after which coincided going from 80 degree weather down to 40 degree weather.
Could it be an accessory belt being too tight? If so, why wouldn't it make it on startup? I can see it going away as rubber expands as the warms but I would expect it to make the noise from starting till then. Not 15 seconds into running.
On Feb 2015 I had this oil leak developing around the timing chain cover/ oil pressure plug and so i replaced the oil pressure sensor and clean the area and though problem solved...
Fast forward today and the weeping has redeveloped and has gotten larger than last time , its only a weeping issue no visible oil droplet leaks, anyways I took a mirror and when probing around and found the leak origin from the rusty looking timing chain tensioner...that what i think it is.
My question is should I just remove and replace the Rubber O-ring on it or should I just replace the entire timing tensioner unit with a new one, my original timing chain tensioner is sitting at 85k miles. The O-ring is free (i have a kit) and i can do it right now or a New Timing chain tensioner w/ new O-ring is around $20 bucks but i cannot verify the part number ...
