I have noticed lately that when my car is slowing down I hear a clapping noise in the engine. Its almost as if something is slapping something very fast and as soon as I speed up I can no longer hear it. Is this normal or should I be worried?
View 9 RepliesI noticed that my Jeep has been making a distinct clapping noise any time the engine is not up to operating temperature. It sounds worst on cold mornings, but becomes quieter as the engine warms up. The noise is RPM dependent, so I'm assuming it has something to do with the engine. The noise is not audible when the engine is idling in park, but quickly shows up as soon as I put the car in gear and add gas. My father and I think that a slightly loose rocker might be the cause of the noise, but we're not sure. A mechanic friend of his told him that our jeep has self adjusting rockers so it can't really be fixed without replacing it. I've never heard of such a thing so I'm having a hard time believing it. The really confusing part is that it only makes noise when the car is in gear and the engine is under stress, making no noise when it's just idling, even when the engine is revved. Since purchasing it 5 years ago, we have been careful to do regular maintenance on our jeep so I'm somewhat surprised by it.

Me and a friend changed just the front brake pads on my hyundai sonata 2012 limited turbo (about 55$ ceramic Wagner thermo-quiets)about a week ago . This was the first ever brake job done for the car so I assumed the rotors were fine . We made sure it was greased up everywhere it was supposed to (Didn't replace or turn them) since then my front brakes have been squealing only when I lightly apply pressure on the brakes slowing down , and goes away completely when pressed down harder. I realized I should have probably changed or turned my rotors after I already drove with the new pads on the old rotors for about a week so it's probably too late now. I am just wondering whether this noise go away eventually (what I initially figured it would) from the pads perhaps wearing back into the old rotors ? Or am I better off not waiting for this because the noise won't to away and I should just change the pads again along with the rotors!?
View 43 RepliesA while ago, I complained about a clicking/clapping sound when I fiddle around with the clutch. I took my car to the dealer today. I let him hear the problem and he instantly knew the problem. 3 minutes for diagnostic. 1 minute for paper work. 1 hour and 26 minutes of labor. DONE. When I let the mechanic hear the noise he rolled his eyes and said, "All newer Elantra's do this".
I was lucky because the customer before me had the same problem and he/she didn't show up on their time slot. The parts were there already and he brought my car in. He said the problem was a bad axle nut, and needs a new spacer, or something. Some dealers tighten it but he highly recommends getting a new one.
After an hour and a half I was gone.

I bought this used Camry 2010 LE 4 Cylinder with 38k miles on it. Right now I have 42k miles on it.
The issue I have is whenever I turn off the engine and then turn it on. The moment I put it on drive and accelerate I hear a clapping sound. It sounds like clap noise when I just turn on the engine and accelerate. It only makes that noise when i start the engine and accelerate and after that the sound is gone
When I leave the car overnight, and drive it the next morning. The sound is louder with a clap sound right after i accelerate. It happens every time i turn off the engine and turn on and drive but it doesn't sound as loud when i leave it for overnight. It still makes the sound but not as loud.
Sometimes you feel it clap on your foot when you accelerate.
Having a weird noise coming from the engine of my 2011 Hyundai Sonata , mom is thinking it's the timing chain , is there a way to check the timing chain before taking it into the shop ?
View 5 RepliesEngine make a sucking noise when turned off? My engine sounds fine but when I open the hood and turn it off I can hear it make a sucking sound almost like its releasing pressure. I can only hear it when im outside and someone turns the car off. Is this normal? Also, how often do you all add coolant? I added mine to full maybe like 5 months ago and today when I added oil to the car it was down to the halfway mark. I hadn't run the car all day and just moved it inside the garage. Does the car not running make the fluid drop or could I have a leak?

View 11 RepliesI purchased a 2011 Sonata about 6 weeks ago. I like almost everything about it, but the engine is very noisy. I'm not talking about a loud growl when you accelerate, but it's almost sounds like there are 2 frequencies sounding at once. It's higher pitched and at times sounds like pinging or clattering. It's very hard to explain. Unfortunately, sometimes it's worse than others and when I've taken it to the dealer, it's not at it's worst. The dealer I purchased it from told me that it was normal, even though I drove another 2011 on their lot that did not have the sound. Another dealer told me that it was a loud fuel pump because of the high pressure of the injectors and that Hyundai is aware and is working on a new "cover" that should muffle the sound. When I contacted Hyundai directly, they did not know of any new "cover" being developed . Assuming I've described it well enough to know... The only thing I know to do is wait for it to get consistently worse, and take it in again.

View 2 RepliesI have a 2012 Sonata, just last December I started hearing like a ticking noise as I was driving. At first I didn't think nothing of it as it stopped. a few days later and moving forward the noise becomes intermittent. I took it to the dealer several times and they couldn't hear it until I had a technician drive with me and he heard it. As they began to examine my car I was told that the noise is coming for the high pressure valve and it is normal. The thing is the car has never made this noise until last year.

I took it to the dealer for service and they said an ECM update was just released, described on the invoice as "TSB 10FL002 FOR COLD START ROUGH IDLE".

Only thing is I am noticing that there's a humming noise from the engine whenever I accelerate and when the car decelerates. It's not really noticeable during the day when the streets are busy and I'm listening to the radio etc., but at night when I'm driving on quiet streets its quite audible and it almost sounds like Diesel engine.
I read a few threads on this and people have attributed it to the direct fuel injection - is this humming sound normal? Do all sonatas sound like this? Or should I go back to the dealership and get it checked out?
I have a 2011 Sonata SE 2.4 In the last week Ive noticed a noise what sounds like my valves are rattling or maybe even a bad lifter. This only happens when I bring the RPM's up to 2500-3000. Not at idol or normal driving when RPM's are around 2000 or lower. Its getting progressively louder every couple of days. I've ruled out bad gas (I used another station in another city on last fill up ). My oil is changed every 3000-4000 miles with the recommended oil as well.
View 47 RepliesI recently acquired a 2014 Sonata Limited 2.4L. Don't know if its me or not but engine noise seems to be excessive in the cabin especially when I am accelerating from a very low speed, almost like something in the engine is loose. Had it at the dealership today for warranty work (seat belt) and recall work and asked the techs to take a listen when the do their inspection. They came back and said that the noise is coming from the electric fuel pump and that it is totally normal. Previous car I had was a 2011 Honda Accord Ex and it seamed quieter.

I understand this is the interlock feature, however, I do not recall feeling this before. I also thought it only activated while in park, but I could be wrong. Is this normal?
I also am noticing a loud rattling noise coming from the engine bay, behind the speedo, under certain conditions. If I use light throttle, the 1-2 shift produces a loud rattling near 1900rpm.
I have a 2011 Sonata GLS with 127k miles on it and I'm trying to diagnose a problem, possibly with transmission.
Since I bought the car at 115k miles I started hearing a noise from engine zone, which appears quite rarely. Noise resembles valve knocking, appears mostly at traffic lights and colder weather (evenings). I was trying to catch the sound by recording it while using emergency brake at D pos. but the sound disappeared right after releasing brake pedal.
Describing in a different way it sounds like a propeller touching something with its blades. The sound also appears at 1900rpm on any gear (mostly when slightly releasing gas pedal around 2k rpm).
While trying to understand/fix the issue I used:
- liqui moly valve cleaner and engine flush
- techtron injection cleaner
- replaced spark plugs
These operations had almost 0 effect on car behavior. The symptoms boil down to a torque converter. Transmission shifts fine, I was going to try transmission fluid change ( a full change by dealer), however it may do more harm, so I'm not sure yet.
Tonight while driving I heard a rattling noise under the engine, come to a stop and the engine cuts off. I pop the hood, get a jump and nothing. So I check the oil and it is dry... I changed it 4 months ago myself, it is a mystery how it leaked. No light came on, no oil leaks anywhere..
Is there any hope in having the engine turn over again? If so how should I go about trying to turn it? Engine only has 61000 miles on it.
I have been driving my 2014 Sonata GLS in Sport mode with no problem. However, two days ago the engine got extremely noisy. I checked the Comfort and Normal modes - definitely no scary noise. Is this common?
View 12 RepliesI purchased a brand new 2014 Sonata Limited 2 months ago and took it to the local dealer last night for two issues.
The first issue was small rust spots on the sillplate and the second is a very slight clicking noise I hear from the engine compartment now when I turn the temperature dial.
The dealer just called and said that the clicking is "normal". The car didn't do it for the first two months.
My ALT is making a bad whining noise and when I disconnect it, the noise stops. it also seems to be slowing down the engine if that's possible.
The batt voltage is the same with the car running or stopped. no cell, batt idiot light comes on at startup and goes off like the rest of the warning lights.
This is the 2006 2azfe 4 banger.
I believe its gotta be a diode pack shot. Is it difficult to replace the pack or should I just get a rebuilt one? The Haynes doesn't show how to disassemble the alt and replace anything but I should be able to do it. would I also need to replace the brushes at the same time?
