Chevrolet - Suburban :: 1997 Diesel Dies While Driving Then Starts Right Back Up

My diesel suburban dies while driving. It starts right back up. I have changed the fuel filter and checked for water in fuel.

Volvo - S70 :: 2000 - Stalls While Driving And Randomly Dies

My 2000 Volvo S70 just started stalling while driving: it completely dies while in motion. This has happened 4 times in the past week, both times (oddly) in the morning on my way home from the gym. Both times, it's happened we have had very damp weather, and it's the second start-up of the morning. It has happened at slow speeds, and it feels as though it is out of gas, but it is not.

Nissan - Pathfinder :: 1998 - Dies Randomly While Driving

My 1998 Nissan Pathfinder dies randomly while driving. There is no consistency to when it dies. I will be driving down the road and then all of a sudden the car will not accelerate and it eventually dies. The other issue is it won't start from time to time. It sounds like it wants to go, but it won't. Eventually it will turn over. It has been to many mechanics. The crank shaft sensor has been replaced and the mass air flow sensor. Neither one of these were the problem. They now think it is the distributor possibly. There are no codes saved. It has been sitting at the shop now for 9 weeks.

Civic - Honda :: 1989 - Engine Randomly Dies Usually While Driving

My 1989 Honda Civic engine randomly dies usually while driving. When it dies I hear a relay click sound coming from the area of the glove box. The tachometer and speedometer go immidiately to 0. The dashboard indicator lights all go out. The turn signals windshield wipers and electric windows all quit working, but the emergency flashers, radio, and comfort system blower continue to work. I think the transmission goes immediately into neutral too because deceleration is much slower than it would be if the engine were running and I take my foot off the accelerator. So far I have always been able to restart the engine and continue driving, though it often takes many tries before it will successfully restart and keep running.

In an unsuccessful restart the engine will fire and start to rev up but die again as soon as I release the key from the Start position. Occasionally the engine will spontaneously restart while we are coasting to a stop. We took it on a long trip this summer and it would almost always work fine until we stopped for gas, food or restroom break. After the break it would die one to three times in the first 5 miles and then would work fine until the next break. My mechanic says the computer is not storing any failure codes and he is having a hard time troubleshooting it because the problem only randomly occurs. I'm wondering if the problem might be a flaky electrical connector somewhere.

Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: 2002 4.6L Dies While Driving Randomly

My 02 F150 4.6 4x2 shuts off while driving - usually when I am coasting, but also at varied speeds, even highway speeds. The motor dies, the gauges all go to 0, and the odometer shows ------ I have to shift to N and coast...if I try to re-start it just turns over and over...gauges still all at 0.

I have determined that if I reach behind the fuse panel and wiggle the wiring harness, my gauges will come back and I will be able to re-start it.

I noticed yesterday, that after it did this and I got it re-started, the red 'Theft' light was blinking rapidly. A clue, perhaps?

I have tightened the 10mm bolt that holds the two wire bundles into the back of the cabin fuse box (by driver's door).

Where to start? I have crawled under the dash, looking for loose, chaffed or otherwise odd looking wire, but so far no good.

Ford Ranger / B-Series :: 1992 - Engine Dies Randomly While Driving

I have just inherited my recently deceased father's 1992 Ranger with the 2.3 liter engine. He was a Ford Mechanic but got to ill to worry about fixing the Ranger. So, let me begin, the engine dies randomly, (at idle or in gear driving doesn't matter what gear or speed), turning key to off and then to on will allow vehicle to restart every time. No "Check Engine" light has ever lit, I do have an "Antilock" light that comes and goes. The engine codes I keep getting are: 10, 218 and 222.

Code 10 is a computer check code,
Code 218 is "Loss of Ignition Diagnostic Monitor (IDM) signal/left side, and
Code 222 is "Distributorless Ignition System - Loss of right side ignition diagnostic monitor (IDM) signal.

These codes were from my Innova reader. I have read where other similar problems were fixed with a new Crankshaft Position Sensor, replaced mine, no change. Another symptom I just noticed is my temp gauge stays near the cool end when it should be higher.

Ford Super Duty (1999-2016) :: 2002 F250 Randomly Dies While Driving When Hits Bumps And Won't Start Immediately

My 2002 F250 7.3 randomly dies while driving and seems to only be when I hit a bump no matter the size. I have checked the valve cover harness connector outside of the valve covers and they look fine. I checked the ECM connection took it off and reconnected it.

Changed the CPS censor twice, checked the ICP sensor, checked continuity of all the glow plugs through the valve cover harness. Checked the fuel pump, checked all related fuses, changed the fuel filter, checked glow plug relay, batteries hold good voltage and were recently upgraded to bigger batteries.

Engine runs just a little rough but not enough to be of concern. Air filter is clean and oil level is perfect. What could possible be causing my truck to randomly die when it hits a bump and not start back right away??? This truck is new to me and its the first diesel engine I have ever owned.

Gmc - Suburban :: 1991 - Fuse Keeps Getting Blown

My fuse keeps getting blown, mechanically and emotionally. My 91 gmc suburban blows the a/c fuse every time i slide the a/c switch to any position. when the fuse goes my emergency brake light turns on and my speedometer stops working. one weird note, my engine seems to run very smooth after the fuse goes, to the point that im not even sure its running but it is. So my question is, where should i start looking to fix the problem? It's too hot/cold in here!"

Suburban :: 1991 - Idle For 1 To 2 Seconds Then Approach To Death

My work horse is singing me the blues. It will idle correctly for 1 - 2 sec., then approach death, then idle correctly again for 1 - 2 seconds. It responds as expected when the throttled of opened for 1 - 2 seconds, any longer it will begin to die. This is what I have done so far.

1. Changed the fuel filter. Did not check to see of water was in the filter as I only purchase gas from name brand gas stations. Did not think I could get bad gas from them.

2. Check MAP sensor, voltage signals were close. Changed it out any way. No change.

3. Checked the Engine Coolant Sensor, it is sending the correct voltage.

4. Checked the Idle Air Control Valve. The impedance is as called for in the Chilton repair manual.

5. Checked the Throttle Position Sensor. It appears to be sending the correct voltage as the throttle is opened and closed.

6. Overhauled the Fuel Pressure Regulator. Replaced the spring, diaphragm, and gaskets.

7. Overhauled the Throttle Body. Removed the injector, cleaned all passages with solvent and compressed air. Did not soak the injectors.

In my mind, all that is left is the fuel pump or maybe I did get bad gas.

Chevrolet - Suburban :: 1991 - Rough At Minimum Throttle

I have a '91 suburban (1/2 ton, 5.7 TBI) starts,idles and revs great, stumbles at most minimal throttle(parking lot speed) replaced cap, rotor, plugs, wires, filters. Ran injector cleaner thru it, swapped TBI with a known to be working unit...

Toyota - Pickup :: 1991 - Starts But Dies After A Second

'91 Toyota 2wd Pickup, 22R-E Engine. 1 yr. ago out of the blue it would start and idle, but if I give it any gas it would die. Shop had trouble figuring it out, then replaced Mass Airflow Sensor; problem re-occurred after once after this repair, but could not be reproduced at shop. 1 yr. later, driving along and engine quits without any warning. Very hard to start, but restarts once, drives about one more block, dies. Unable to restart; engine will crank and catch, but after about 1 second dies. Tried unplugging Mass Airflow Sensor; no change. Left sitting overnight, next morning it starts right up. Problem seems similar to a year ago, though this time it wouldn't start and idle, it would just start and immediately die. In every instance it was rainy/slushy and cold.

Camaro :: 1991 - Dies When Thrown Into Drive

Basically it dies when thrown into drive. Idle is great, the reverse is great, neutral is great, drive is crappy.

If I let it sit for an hour or so, it will stay in drive without stalling, not for long though.

My MAP sensor connector is messed up I already know that but could it be causing my issue?

Also, I put antifreeze into my engine coolant reserve about 2 weeks ago, yesterday I checked it and it was just about empty. Any reason for that? I haven't noticed any leaks either.

Chevrolet - Suburban :: 1997 - Diesel Engine Dies - Dashboard Lights Don't Come On

My '97 Chevy Suburban diesel dies at random times. Nothing seems to trigger it; it usually happens when I'm just driving along, minding my own business; not accelerating or decelerating, turning, stopping, etc. Has happened with the fuel tank at every level: full, half full and quarter tank. When it dies, the dashboard lights do NOT come on. When I turn the key "off" and back "on", the lights come on and the engine will crank fine, but won't start. Ten minutes later, it starts and everything is fine. It may not do it again for weeks, or it may do it again in 10 minutes.

This last time, the fuel tank was fairly low -- below a quarter tank -- and it seems to "buck" or "hesitate a little just before it died the first time. The dealer replaced the crankshaft position sensor and the fuel injector pump. When it started doing it again, they ran every diagnostic test they had and could find nothing wrong. Ran fine for a few weeks, then quit three times in 30 minutes. It's back there now.

Accord :: 1991 Honda - Engine Dies On Road When In Operation

I have a 1991 Honda Accord with 280k miles on it.

Question: what would be reasons the engine dies when in operation? I had not noticed anything wrong with the car other than I noticed it may take the automatic transmission a little longer time to shift gears.

While I was on the road, i felt something happening under the hood and noticed the car was losing power. the battery and oil level lights went on and needed to pull the car to the side of the road for obvious reason!

The car was towed back to my house. During the ride back the guy who was towing the car said that the engine turned over when he turned on the ignition.

I did the same thing when I got home and the car started up just fine. Nothing else noticed. The oil level was at normal level. I drove the car a couple times around the block.

The engine is due for a tune up and there sometimes is some vibration. This car has been very reliable. But I obviously can not have situation where the engine dies when on the road!

Engines - Honda - Accord :: 1991 - Starts Fines Then Dies

My son's 1991 Honda Accord was running real rough. The temperature gauge did not budge from cold. I changed out the thermostat. When I tried to start it it started great then coughed and shuddered and then died. It keeps starting and then dying. I took off the IAC and flushed it with mass air flow cleaner. The screen over one of the ports was all crudded up. It cleaned up OK. However then I put it back it improved for a minute and then died again. I have checked for vacuum leaks but found none.

Volvo - 740 :: 1991 - The Unknown Siren Like Sound At Start Up Randomly

So, first, I need to tell that my car was just turned away from the only mechanic that is a "volvo mechanic" in the region because he said it grumbled and shook too much and it was too much of a liability.

There is only one thing I am concerned about, because it has been grumbling and shaking since I bought it five years ago and it hasn't gotten worse (so why worry!)

This car is a 1991 Volvo 740 sedan with 250,000 miles, a 4-cylinder gas engine and rear-wheel drive.

I have a siren sound coming from the front end, but only sometimes.

When I first start moving forward, I hear a "whooooooooOOOOOOOOOOOPPPPP!!!!" (sounds like a siren) for about 50-75 feet while I am going about 25-30 MPH. It only happens when I first start rolling forward when I first turn the car on from sitting for a while (3 or more hours). If I come to a stop, I don't hear it. If I park and run in somewhere and come back soon, I don't hear it.

I have been hearing a small "whoosh whoosh whoosh" sound coming from the front end that gets faster the faster I am traveling, and I don't know if that is related.

C/K :: 1991 C1500 2wd - Truck Runs Good For 20 Minutes Then Dies And Won't Start Until Next Day

It is a 1991 C1500 2wd, ext cab, short bed 5.7L engine with about 300k miles on it that I have had for a year. Supposedly a different 350 engine and transmission was put in a couple years ago.

This problem has been going on for 2 weeks. I'll start the car up and it runs just fine, no problems. After driving for about 20 minutes, the engine will die while driving, and will not start back up until the next day. I have sat in the car for literally 4 hours patiently waiting for it to start. I'll turn the key and the engine will rotate, but will not start. When someone shows up to give me a jump after the battery gets low, it will not start. I'll go home and go to sleep, and sometime the next day I'll go to my truck, and it will start back up, and I'll drive back home, and I'll make it as long as it takes less than 20 minutes.

It is not just a "morning problem", but a "first time I have started the truck that day" kind of problem. Last week, it happened to me in the mornings. On Saturday, I didn't leave my house until 2pm and the problem happened. Today, I first drove it at 8pm, and the problem happened.

Things I have changed so far (mostly from Autozone):

Starter - burnt it out when it first died 2 weeks ago, now I know not to crank when below 9 volts - lifetime warranty

Spark plugs - no more engine popping or driving with 2 feet - changed last week on Tuesday - AC Delco CR43TS gapped at .035

plug wires - changed all in November, since I noticed one of the old ones was tore - lifetime warranty

Distributor cap and rotor - changed last month when the engine started popping - autozone

Ignition control module- I changed today, I really thought that would fix the problem after speaking with the Autozone guy - lifetime warranty

Ignition Coil - changed last month because of popping

Fuel Filter - changed last Thursday, thinking it was a fuel problem

Here are some of the other symptoms I have been noticing over the last couple months:

Pretty bad gas mileage, I know it is a V8, but it is just as thirsty when I am not carrying anything as when I am pulling a car. A couple months ago, after driving for about 30 minutes or so, the engine would make a "Pfft" noise and would start popping and I would have to drive with 2 feet to keep the engine running.

Civic - Honda :: 1991 - Idling Roughly / Dies Intermittently While Approaching To Stop

In the Car Talk column on 1/3/2016, it sounds like Lynnette's 1991 Honda Civic wagon was experiencing very similar symptoms to my wife's 2001 Honda Odyssey (189,000 mi) a few months ago. Rough idle, engine almost dies sometimes at stops, groans during acceleration. Additionally, accelerating between 40-60 mph our Honda would feel like it was "loading up," running rich or in the wrong gear climbing hills. I replaced the idle air control valve, which fixed the rough idle but not the other symptoms. Turned out I needed to reset (power cycle) the ECM and go through a curb idle/rev warm-up procedure so it would relearn the throttle position sensor's operating range after replacing the IAC valve. I disconnected the battery, removed and reinserted the hazard fuse, then reconnected the battery. Then from a cold start held the throttle at 3000 rpm until the engine warmed up to normal or the electric fans kicked on. Since then it's back to smooth, strong acceleration we expect from the Honda we love.

GTI 337/20th Anniversary :: Car Randomly Dies On Freeway

2 or 3 months ago i had to get my fuel pump changed due to my car dying randomly on the free way multiple times a week. The problem disappeared after changing the fuel pump, however it has started happening again recently. The car wont completely die but while going 60 mph or more, the car will suddenly lose all power and the gas pedal doesn't do anything for a couple seconds, then all power comes back and i have control of the car again. Why this is happening?

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: 2001 2.0 Dies Randomly While Its Being Driven / At A Stop

So here's whats going on now. My girlfriend has had her car for about 10 months now, and besides the last 3 weeks it has been a perfect car. In these last 3 weeks though her car has been a real pain.

Her car randomly dies while its being driven/at a stop. It doesn't matter how fast she is going or how long she has been at a stop.

It first started 3 weeks ago when i was driving it to the mall with her and the car started to slow down on the freeway, going about 65. I pushed on the accelerator and got no response. After about 5 seconds all power came back and we were off. At no point in time did the power inside or the headlights dim/turn off.

Next time it died it wouldn't get going again. Battery was fine. My first assumption was the fuel pump. Replaced the fuel pump and it ran fine.

A couple days later the car did the exact same thing, except this time the battery was completely shot. Took a look at it and it was almost 8 years old. Went and replaced it.

The following day it died again, this time it was the battery again but since it was a brand new battery we knew it couldn't be the issue. So i went ahead and replaced the alternator. Turned on the car and it ran perfect. While it was running i even disconnected the battery just to make sure the alternator could still power the car, no issues.

A few days went by with everything working perfectly fine, not a single issue that is, until tonight. As my girlfriend was coming to pick me up her car died. She was coming up to a stop light and starting to slow down when her car lost power again. All the lights and radio stayed on but the car died. Battery light came on as well. I walked to her car and told her to try to start it. Fired up right away and ran fine like nothing ever happened. Drove it to my house without another issue.

At this point i'm stumped. The CEL is not coming on, which is a bummer because that would make this much easier. I cleaned off the terminals for the battery and the connecting wires (which weren't dirt or corroded).
