View 2 RepliesI have a 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport (128,000 miles) that has a groaning sound when ever you turn the steering wheel (and front wheels, of course). We were told by the former owner that it was the front wheel u-joints. I do not think that is the problem since it makes the sound when the Jeep is not moving forward or reverse. Is it typical for the u-joints or spindle joint (ball joints?) to make noise when they get older?
It makes a similar sound when I stand in front of it and try to push it up and down. When that happens, the car is not running and the wheels are stationary in all respects.
I just recently replaced the inner and outer tie rods an got a 4 wheel alignment on my 2005 camry le and now whenever you turn the steering wheel all the way lleft or right, it makes a loud groaning noise, and it sounds like something is scraping kinda? What this could be an how to solve this problem? It is not low on power steering fluid...!
View 3 RepliesI have a 2003 Volkswagen Passat, and I'm having some trouble with it. When I turn the steering wheel, there is a groaning sound both to the left and right. the other problem is when I'm accelerating slowly up an incline and turning the steering wheel, there a type of clicking sound I hear and feel on my accelerator. By the way, it's a V6 engine, Front wheel drive.

What can it be..? I hope it has something to do with my tires since I'm getting new ones today. The current ones are pretty bald.

I have a 05 Touareg V6. When coming to a stop (when speed reaches 5 mph or less) there is a slight vibration felt in the steering wheel. What causes this? What can I do to correct this? (I had new rotors and brakes put on about 2K miles ago.

View 2 RepliesMy 04 V8 didn't come with the manual when I bought it. I found a document online showing that the 2004 only needed service/oil change every 10K but I wanted to double check that as it seemed a lot of miles to be between services, and I'm at 14,990 miles right now so if I need a 15K service I need to get it scheduled.
Also, how do I turn on the heated steering wheel thing? Just for the "cool" factor I want to test it out but I can't find the control anywhere for it. I'm assuming my car has it since it has the pass through ski bag.
A few days ago my car started making a groaning noise when I turn the steering wheel. Sounds like it's coming from the middle of the car. Makes the noise whether the car is moving or not.
View 12 RepliesGot in my Treg turned key an nothing happened. Thought that somehow battery was dead. Hooked up jumpers to treg and touched both ends on the other side and had mean sparks!! Checked lights and lights are bright. Checked alarm and alarm is loud. Turn key and none of the gauges register. Starter does not turn over. Can't get car out of gear. Wheel is locked. Can get key out. Thought it was key fob and used spare. Same result. Bottom line, plenty of juice in battery, but starter will not turn over, won't come out of gear, and steering wheel is locked.
View 10 RepliesI have a 2003 Toyota Camry. About 10 months ago, when I get a transmission fluid change, the mechanic told me that my power steering fluid is dirty. A few month later, in the cold winter month, my steering wheel make loud screeching noise when the engine is cold only. The mechanic told me that I have a small power steering leak. But since I don't see the power steering fluid level goes down and the mechanic say I don't have to fix it now, I didn't do anything about it.
About a month ago, there is a squeaking noise come from my steering wheel every time I drive very slowly out of (or into) my driveway and turning the wheel. Now I heard the noise when I drive slowly (10 mph) and turning the wheel too. So what is the problem that cause the noise when I turn the wheel at slow speed? I only drive about 5k miles a year. Is it safe if I just continue to ignore the problem?
Also, the color of my current power steering fluid is amber, but a little dark. Which power steering fluid should I buy?
When I turn my AC to max. power (fan) the steering wheel and the entire dash board starts shaking and vibrating. Also one can hear a "deep" humming noise which seems to be coming form the fan/fans belt etc.
View 9 RepliesLat week I dropped my '04 V6 Touareg off at my dealer for some minor warranty work. On the way to the dealer, I noticed a weird noise and vibration whenever I turned the steering wheel. I mentioned this to the dealer when I dropped the car off. They called me later saying that there was a leak in the steering rack and the whole thing needed to be replaced. The car wasn't safe to drive, so they would provide a rental.
Today, I get a call saying that the steering rack finally came in, but that upon installing it they noticed that something connectet to the steering or front suspension (I can't remember what it was, tie rod perhaps?) was bent, probably from hitting a pot hole, and that therefore the replacement would not be covered by warranty. Needless to say, this will not be cheap.
I do not take my Touareg off road, and I don't remember hitting any pot hole so hard that it could have bent something. My questions are:
- Is this a known or common problem/issue with Touaregs?
- Could hitting a pot hole or something a long time ago cause a leak many months later?
2002 regal LS 3800 V6 . Steering makes a groaning sound in either direction, even when not moving.
View 7 RepliesHad my 2004 Phaeton in to take care of some smaller interior issues under warranty. One of them was that the steering column makes a groaning noise when it is being retracted. Service advisor told me that the Phaeton technician (who is also the shop foreman - Jim Ellis VW Marietta) told him that this is common with Phaetons and there isn't a realistic fix for it. I've read the post already about the felt strip wearing down, but I'm wondering how many of you have the steering column groaning noise when it's being retracted when the car is shut off? I'm trying to decide whether to push the issue with the dealer or just live with it.
View 12 RepliesMy friend with an 07 with about 109k miles on it now has started getting a "groaning" noise whenever the wheel is cut hard to the right or left, either sitting still or rolling. A local repair shop (not the dealer) checked it out and said there was some "stuff that needed to be lubricated". Not trusting this opinion he went to a Toyota dealer where he was getting new brake pads installed on all 4 corners (no Lexus dealer in the city where he lives), they diagnosed the car as needing 4 new struts and a new balljoint.
If in fact he does need the struts and balljoint, I am thinking chances are there will be a bunch more suspension stuff that should really be done at the same time when everything is apart anyway - perhaps bushings, endlinks, etc?
Is he better off sticking with the OEM strut replacements or should he go aftermarket? He's not looking to slam the car or anything, and is more of a ride comfort guy than handling enthusiast.
I have a problem with my VW Touareg 05 plate. When I turn the steering wheel full lock left or right in tight places the car shudders. It doesn't do it all the time but does appear to be getting worse as time goes on. I have been told that it may well be the Stepper motor.

View 6 RepliesHaving, apparently not uncommon problem of a misaligned steering wheel -- i.e., when the wheel is horizontal, the car drives left? Two dealers have told me that there is no alignment problem (and have given me the BS "crown of the road" explanation). Perhaps this is not an alignment issue, but there's no question that the wheel must be slightly turned to get the car to drive straight, which is at best a major annoyance.
View 5 RepliesI have a 2006 Kia Rio base sedan. I've owned it from 55K miles to 70.5K miles. It does not have power steering.
When moving at rather slow speeds, maybe 0-15 or so mph, it seems that bumps or potholes or other irregularities will cause the steering wheel to turn significantly. I feel the steering wheel move back and forth by itself and the wheels feel like they "flop" to either direction to the whim of the road's irregularities if that makes sense. The wheel feels almost as if someone is grabbing it and moving it back and forth. The movement is forceful enough that if I'm not holding the wheel, the car can really wander around, possibly into another lane but I have not wanted to test that.
I tried looking up this issue on existing threads but couldn't find it. Also, I didn't really know what to call it. I had an apparently useless alignment at Firestone about a week ago (car still pulls to the right) which did not seem to affect the issue. I attached a scan of the alignment sheet thing.
Incidentally, it seems like they left a thing out of spec but maybe that's a whole other question. So, what could cause this and whether it can lead to damage or safety hazards?
