I have 2009 corolla with 70000 miles on it. I replaced new brake pads. I have some metal grinding noise when i turn right only. I tried looking online and got few similar problem faced by other people. I am not sure if its exactly same issue. No accident damage. Mostly driven on freeway.
1) noise looks similar
2) I do not get noise when i accelerate
3) for car this old is it expected ?
My car has been doing this more. When I turn into a parking spot or my works' parking garage my car front end makes a Metal Grinding noise But it does not make this noise when I am driving - turning corners. Car is a 2007 Toyota Corolla LE (I miss my Beetle). The Toyota service says brakes are fine and they see nothing. I am not the only one that hears it... My son has hard it and I have startled some pedestrians.
View 1 RepliesI performed brake maintenance today with my brother on my 2010 corolla CE, my front rotors were warped and my pads were used ( and also uneven) and I replaced both front rotors and pads.
The install went smoothly, my brother changed a couple of brakes sets and knew what he was doing and showed me up.
Took it for a spin, the brakes work very nicely ( i bought the ceramic wagner bundle ) but theres a slight grinding noise when driving, like the pads are touching and rubbing a bit too much on the rotor, but the driving is unnafected. Also, there's a sqealing noise coming from either side when you turn only.
Braking itself produces no noise whatsoever, only when you turn that it squeals.
I have a 2009 Toyota Corolla and it's making a loud grinding metallic noise on the front left side. It does it while I drive the faster I go the louder it gets. When I turn to the left it makes it louder, when I turn right the noise decreases. PG&E have been breaking the roads by where I live and there's a lot of little rocks I drive thru. I'm wondering if that's the problem?? What do I do?

If the car sits out 8 hours or more in VERY COLD (zero degrees) weather makes a 1-2 second clashing/sparking noise the split second after turning the ignition on but before engine starts. I tried to attach video/audio. The car starts and runs fine. isn't a ticking or knocking or tapping noise assoc. with bad engine. It isn't squealing noise assoc. w/ serpentine belt. I've been waiting for it to get cold enough to leave overnight at Toyota dealer. I keep wondering if it isn't related to the botched oil changed at the Toyota dealer a couple yrs ago when they forgot the oil & I ran car about 30-60 seconds. At the time, they said all was okay and did compression test (Cyl 1=178psi, #2=175 #3=180 #4=178) all within the normal specs 145-189. I got a 2nd opinion at another Toyota dealer at time who removed valve cover and inspected cam caps and scoped cylinder walls and said all was okay and compression good. No mechanical problems- uses no oil, check engine light not on, etc. What noise is and why just when very cold and car sits out long time?
View 18 RepliesI have a 2009 Toyota Camry with approx 124K miles on it (my daily commute isn't that great...). Lately I've noticed some vibrations or rubbing when I'm turning:
There is a constant rubbing/grinding noise when turning. It is more obvious when I turn right. It is definitely coming from the front tires. It does not sound like metal at all. Just like a rubbing noise, that causes a slight vibration up front.
When I'm driving straight, at a certain speed, I notice the vibration/rubbing sound, but it eventually blends in with the sound of the road. The ride isn't bumpy at all, so I don't think it's related to the struts. When I pull out of a parking place, turning left, it just feels "loose", if that makes any sense.
From what I've been reading, it seems to lean towards a bad wheel bearing, or CV issues. What the problem could be?

View 7 RepliesWhen I start my car (usually a cold start) I hear a TERRIBLE grinding-like noise. Other times it sounds like a shuffling noise. And then other times it's like its over-exerting itself trying to start up. I've taken it to the dealer many times as it's a 2014 Corolla. They have no answers. The claim it's just a characteristic of the car. I call bull. This isn't normal for any car. My car has a CVT transmission by the way. Could it be the starter? Spark plugs? Note: the noise is about 1000x worse in winter. Audio is attached in separate comment.
View 19 RepliesI have a '98 5-Speed Corolla. If I rev the engine when the car is in neutral and warming up I hear an odd grinding noise when I let off the gas and the engine goes down to idle. The noise does not occur if I put my clutch in. Is this something to worry about?
Also, I'm wondering what CV joints sound like when they're failing.
I have an '04 Corolla with 206k with a slight grinding noise from the right front when I make a left turn. Is it the outer CV joint? The noise sounds like the tire is rubbing against a splash guard but it's not.
View 3 RepliesI recently brought my 2005 toyota corolla to my mechanic to give my car a check up as i will be going on a three week road trip soon.Upon assessment, my mechanic told me that my front right wheel bearing was making a strange noise and that i should replace it. I went ahead and had it replaced. after i had it replaced the front right wheel area was still making a grinding noise (louder than before it was replaced). I brought it back and he replaced it again with a new wheel bearing.
Again after the 2nd replacement it continued to make a load crunching, grinding noise when ever i brake the car. So once again, i brought it back. I thought perhaps it was my brake rotor and had him check that. He did just that and said the break was fine. He said it may be because the axl was not sitting true. so i had the axl replaced. well today i picked up the car and drove it approx 5 miles and the same crunching/grinding noise persists!!! I brought it back and it is once again being worked on. I need it fixed and am worried that my car won't hold up for my upcoming 4000mile road trip. Our 05 Corolla, 160,000 miles, has started making a grinding sound when we upshift into 3rd, unless we let the rpms fall to below 1000. My husband said the clutch needed adjusting, but the dealer said this clutch is not adjustable. The dealer found nothing wrong and could not get the car to make the noise while in the shop. (It did actually get better for a while but got worse again almost immediately after the visit to the dealer.)
Our other car (a Saturn) has over 250K miles on the original clutch, so I don't think it's our driving. What could be wrong, and is this something that needs to be addressed soon lest we damage something irreparably? Also, this car has, since purchase, been nearly impossible to shift on the coldest mornings. Really, sometimes it is all I can do to get the lever in reverse to back out of the drive in winter (in Kansas). Warming up works, but it seems to take an inordinate amount of time before shifting is"normal."
So ever since I bought my car in April, I hear this noise when I accelerate. It only happens when I first start the car. Its a grinding light noise but you can definitely hear it when you are in the car. I only hear it when after I start the car, go reverse, and right after I step on the gas on drive. Today I took it in for my 10k service and told the Assistant Service Manager about it. We went and took my car for a test drive and now we also hear the noise right after we he start the car then reverse.
View 11 RepliesI have a 2009 Corolla with 67k on the odometer so it is outside of warranty. I recently found about the TSB for the grinding noise on start up and took the car to my mechanic to have it looked at. He said he wasn't able to do the job because he would have to do some sort of computer update (ECU reflash?) and he doesn't have the means.
My car is currently at the dealership, and they want around 1800 dollars, 1400 for the VVTI gear, and another 400 for a tensioner. I have a friend who used to be a Toyota mechanic, and he says he can do the work as stated in the TSB, but he's unsure if the ECU would need updating, and it does not mention anything in the TSB. So what I am wondering is if :
1. Does changing the VVTI gear actually fix the grinding noise? I was reading an old thread where members said it was still there after having the TSB done.
2. Does there need to be anything done to the ECU after doing the TSB?

I was driving my car today, and I stopped at a stop sign. When I went to go, I pushed the gas, and my car revved up, moved forward, then all of a sudden it made a loud grinding noise (Like I was dragging metal sheets), and the gas stopped responding (but the engine was still running). The car still turns on, but whenever the gas is pushed, it doesn't go and makes that awful noise. What could be wrong?

It happens most times I turn my car on in the morning, after it has been sitting off and untouched for the night. When I am turning the car on afterwards throughout the day, the noise is less likely to appear.
I recently took my car in and got the water pump and belt replaced, because a few months ago I was driving down the highway and I heard a similar noise coming from under the hood, and I opened the hood and red coolant liquid was splashed everywhere. I am not knowledgeable about cars at all, but the dealership replaced the water pump and the belt and that seemed to fix that issue, but the grinding noise upon ignition is still there.
I took it into the dealership, but they were not able to replicate the issue because it had not been the first time the car was turned on for the day, so there was no grinding noise. I would like to know if it is the water pump or belt, since those are still under a 2 year warranty with the dealership. Otherwise, I need to know what this is so I can get it fixed.
I replaced my pads 3 months ago. Now I have a metal grinding sound (not squeaking). The mechanic says I need new rotors, and he will resurface the pads. I know I can replace the rotors myself; but do I need to resurface the 3 months old pads? If so; how will they resurface them?
View 4 RepliesSometimes when I start my car it makes a weird cranking/grinding noise for half a second. The closest thing I have to engine mods are my TWM short shifter, and my borla axle back exhaust.
The noise only happens after my car has been sitting there, parked for a few hours. So to bring it to Toyota/mechanic would be nearly impossible to replicate, unless I left it there for a while. And even then, the noise only happens sometimes.
Yes I'm pressing my clutch pedal all the way down. No I am not holding the key too long when starting the car. What it might be?
I have 2010 toyota corolla le japan made, some time I turning left I hear the knocking noise. I already change wheel bearing both side, the strut also both side, the passenger side axle replace the cv boot 2 time with regrease since 2012 jan and left side axle change the whole new axle since 2011 jan , my driver side outer tie are changed since 2014 nov, the mechanic look at the suspension that is not leaking on every suspension parts. so what could be the noise from. I guess may be is the passenger side axle or right outter tie rod , or internal tie rod or ball joint. could you tell me what would be the noise come from or how to check. I have 220k mile with bad burning oil like 1k mile drive have to add 5w20 half quar to 1 quar. how to solve to reduce burn oil and the engine seal is not leak.
View 19 RepliesSaw this topic addressed, but not resolved to my satisfaction, in a post made some years back by the owner of an '03 Corolla. The comments suggested a water leak was the cause. But the sound is definitely DRY (think Etch-A-Sketch vs. waterbed). And the small amount of water that is leaking on the front passenger side floor didn't start until about a month after we started hearing the noise.
My VERY amateur guess is that it is some sort of breach in the air bag system, since that's where the noise sounds like it's originating. I searched the internet and didn't find anything on this topic of a sand noise coming from the vicinity of the glove compartment. Since the local Toyota dealer service department also thinks it's a water leak (not covered by our warranty, apparently) and that it could be potentially very expensive to locate and fix....
