I have a 1997 geo prizm that locks up the power steering pump mostly in cold weather until the car warms up. It does it itermittenly. What could cause this problem?

View 4 RepliesWhen I started engine, I heard the high pitched squealing noise for 10~30 seconds. The noise was from the power steering pump. The noise changed by turning steering wheel. I did drain & refill 4 times with Preston dino base PSF & turkey baster. Next week cold day, the same noise was still there, so did drain & refill 5 times again with Preston PSF, but the same noise again.
A week ago, 3rd refill was with MaxLife Dex/Merc ATF that I had in my garage, more than 1 liter drained & refilled. Today at -15 C(=5 F), the noise came back for 5~10 seconds. I feel MaxLife(synthetic base) is better than Preston(dino base), but still several seconds noise make me worry about my power steering system.
Am I the only one hear the noise? Is this noise the start of the pump failure? Is this normal for the extreme cold winter?
Over the past week its been pretty cold here in IL (hovering around 30 degrees). Car makes a binding noise when its cold, but only when its cold. Noise is VERY similar to this:
Is this my PS pump going out, the rack itself, or something suspension related? Fluid level is up to the Max and there are no leaks....
2005 Honda Accord Growls When Cold/CoolLast winter on real cold days (okay, real cold in Houston, TX, means around freezing to about 40 degrees), a loud growl came from under the hood. The growl stayed until things under the hood warmed up a little. While it was warming, the growling would slowly diminish; however, if the steering wheel was deflected, it would aggravate the growling noise. I checked the fluid in the power steering pump, and it was fine. I did some on-line research, and it appears that the Honda's power steering pump's bearings might be going bad. Is there anything that can be done preemptively to avoid the expense of replacing the power steering pump? (I hear they are expensive to replace.) Last month I was in Kansas City and the growl was barely audible on a 64 degree morning. I fear it is getting worse and will not last long.
View 2 RepliesMy power steering pump in my 05 Explorer 4.6L V8 is starting to howl it's displeasure on a cold start at near zero temperature. It doesn't do it when warm.
I thought I would change the fluid but the owners manual says to use Mercon ATF, but Ford now sells Mercon V as power steering fluid. It also warns not to mix the two kinds.
So, which one should I use? And, which way to change it, siphon pump the reservoir and replace with new a few times, or let the pump pump it out and replace as it goes?
Fuel pump does not work in Cold Weather, but works fine in warm weather? Will replacing the pump solve this or is there a bad sensor somewhere else causing the problem?
View 14 RepliesI have a 1998 Honda Accord 4 cylinder with roughly 150k miles. When the weather is cold outside the steering wheel will shake until the car warms up. I have taken the car into the shop and they checked the engine mounts, tie rods, etc and they told me that the car is fine. The tires are not unbalanced nor are they packed with dirt or debris. The vibration only occurs when the car is cold and it goes away once the car warms up. Also, the vibration will stop when I simply place a small amount of pressure on the steering wheel with my hand or knee. The vibration does not occur when I am driving at low or high speeds and it usually only occurs when I am stopped at stop signs or lights.
I have done the regular maintenance on the vehicle and I have replaced the timing belt, spark plugs/ wires, belt(s), etc, if that make a difference.
I've got a 2008 Prius which I bought used last summer. It works quite well except for one behavior: In cold weather, sometimes, the car either does not start at all, or starts without the dashboard gauges lighting up.

View 14 RepliesI have a 2003 Acura MDX with 120,000 miles on it. I live on a mountain road that goes from 5,200 feet to 7,400 feet in 7 miles. When I head up the mountain and go around switchbacks, at the higher altitudes the power steering goes out when it's very hot outside and I usually have the air conditioner on. I've had the power steering and sensors replaced twice and it hasn't worked.
View 2 RepliesVehicle is a 2005 Toyota Sequoia SR5. Door locks cycle on and off. Happens during wet weather and usually takes 2-3 hours of driving. Sounds like there is a relay shorting out so that even though the doors are already locked, it attempts to relock them. If I unlock doors using the rocker switch, immediately locks them.
Then the lock mechanism tries to lock them again, and cycles through this every 10 seconds to 3-4 minutes randomly. Is there a relay under the hood which might do this when moisture enters the engine compartment? If so, where is it located and what is the part number.
One mechanic suggested that I replace the multiples computer located in the rear tailgate but he wasn't very clear about why he thought that was the case.
This is a pretty strange situation. A couple of years ago, my automatic locks stopped working consistently in hot weather. Sometimes they'll work and sometimes they won't, but the worst thing is that they are inconsistent. I only have this problem in the summertime or on really warm days in the spring or fall (I live in Colorado). What could cause this?

Winter when it gets -20 my trans temp gets warmer (not towing 165.F or higher) When it gets to -30 my trans temp gets to 175 F. or higher I have never looked at trans temps before on any vehicle that I have owned. I like that these trans get warmer when it is cold out and colder when it is hot out.
View 5 RepliesI'm driving a 2006 4cyl LX Sonata. Just started past 3 months. Intermittently and usually after long freeway driving, the pwr steering locks-up as I come to a stop. Example is driving off the freeway via a ramp and stopping . Steering breaks loose if I apply pressure and goes back to normal. Fluid has been checked for level but not replaced.

View 4 RepliesRecently I've been noticing a gas smell after parking my car after the drive home from work, but engine performance and mileage efficiency didn't seem affected, and I found no visible evidence of leaking on the ground (nor in the engine, but I likely don't know the right places to look).
Today, with the engine running, I looked around the engine to see if I could locate any gas leakage -- I located the fuel pressure regulator (I think; a golf-ball sized acorn on the right of the engine with a hose coming in the top and a pipe coming out the bottom and going down and to the left) and didn't see any leaking during my brief test. I'll check it again after my drive home tonight.
One new thing I did discover, though; while in park, when I slowly pressed on the accelerator, there would be a point where the engine started losing power and going into a rev/slowdown cycle: about a second or two of revving, then a half second of slowing down. This was while cold and in park; I've not experienced this in normal driving.
Our temps have hit into the -18 to -25 Celsius... I have noticed that on 3 different occasions now that the truck feels like its locked in 4wd when I reverse out of my drive way.My Truck is an F250 Crewcab with 4800 miles
This all started with the cold weather. At first I thought my 2 yr old was turning switches on while he was up front one time, but it happended again the following morning taking my 5yr old to school...
I back up up about 20 feet and then make a fairly sharp 90 degree turn and then all the way down the driveway to the street...its really noticeably on the 90 degree turn..once I turn to go forward it still seems jerky...same as having 4wd engaged on dry surface while turning..
After a little bit of driving it seems to go away...also keep in my mind that the 4wd switch has never been touched at anytime at all...we have a lightly snow packed driveway but my traction is still fine to where 2 wd is all that's needed
Could it be something in the rear diff "catching and releasing" for lack of a better term ?
Locker issues, clutchpacks...?
As I am typing I also remembered making a right hand turn on dry pavement and it felt like the rear end slipped a bit and then caught again, much the same way it would fell as if you hat one tire on a small patch of ice and slipped as ya took off and then caught as it hit the dry pavement...
