There is a strange rubbing sort of noise coming from the front end. I hear it when I take my foot off the accelerator and/or when I turn the steering wheel to the left. To me it sounds like it's coming from the passenger side of the front end, but I could be wrong. The most recent work done to the vehicle was the brakes, about a month or two ago.
View 2 RepliesI have strange rubbing and whumping noises coming from underneath my truck. Yesterday I changed the old e-brake and lines, thought it my be rubbing on the wheel. Today I changed the front and rear axle u-joint and rear pinion seal. The front u-joint was ceased and the pinion seal was leaking. I thought this would cure it but the noise is still there , the noise is more pronounced when I make a turn. Besides that the truck runs perfect. This summer I changed all 4 rotors, calipers and pads and ball joints , shocks and muffler. Tomorrow I will jack the front up and check the front, where the noise would coming from.

I have a 2001 Pontiac Montana that was overheating. It was low on coolant, and using coolant. I took it to a mechanic who checked it out and found exhaust gases in the coolant. He initially told me that it was a bad head gasket. After doing a bit of research, I am told that it could also be an intake manifold gasket. I know I am losing coolant, but I cannot tell where. I don't think it is going into the oil, as my oil level does not go up. I do not see coolant leaking below the vehicle, so perhaps it is going into the exhaust? Or leaking slowly on top of the engine where it is burned off before it can go on the ground.
Is there any test I can do to determine which gasket is bad before tearing into the vehicle? I thought about sending an oil sample off to determine if I am getting any coolant in the oil, but I don't know if that would be useful information at this point.
I have a 2001 Pontiac Montana van, when i drive i feel like there is just not enough power there. Most of the time when i hit 30mph the engine drops in power, hard to explain so I will try my best. I get in turn the key starts right up with out any hesitation what's so ever! I leave for work, while driving when I come to a stop sign and stop and take off its gets sluggish so while my speedometer is going up my movement is not changing as it should so needless to say I have to do 80 85 mph just to keep up with the average moving can at 70mph.
Once in a while I will give it some gas and let go of it and it would back fire a little not sure why. Recently I had new head gaskets put on cause temperature was not staying where it was suppose to be, they smooth out the headers and did a tune up, not sure about the timing, New fluids, once in awhile the temp would climb but that cause of the fans. Took it to AutoZone they did a obd code check came back with O2 senser and nothing else, so if I replace this will it bring my van back to normal running operation? And would it be anything I could check to rule out?
It's darn cold in many parts of the east. -4 this morning. Anyway, driving to work today, I had my heater on about halfpower, and about 30 min. into my commute, the air vent began making a bubbling, chirping sort of noise. I turned it off until I got to work. When I parked, I turned it back on, and it was making a very loud, straining noise.
It's a 2009 Pontiac Vibe (Toyota Matrix twin)...
I have a 2001 Montana with 140,000 miles on it. I bought it used five years ago. The transmission is going out. The shop did a scan and found the torque converter clutch is sticking on. What this is? Should I make the repairs or ditch the van?
Good points: four new tires in December 2013; body is great; and minor maintenance repairs.
Bad points: the air conditioning is broken and the heat is forever terrible.
The van is currently at my regular shop and they do not do transmissions so I do not have an estimate or more information about the problem.
So i have had my r now for a lil under 2 weeks, just noticed a strange noise, seems to be coming from the front drivers side, its a low whine/hum, almost like a pump or small motor is running and is very similar to when you use your wiper fluid. the noise is only present when the engine is cold and typically only does it two to three times while stopped. Just seeing if this is a normal thing, never heard anything like this on my previous vw.
View 4 RepliesI have a 2004 Pontiac Montana, and it just started making a low buzzing vibration noise when it's in motion. tone/pitch only changes with vehicle speed, not engine RPM. It becomes noticeable at about 20 MPH. Pitch starts low, gets a bit higher and faster as speed increases. Have looked for anything loose, nothing found. Braking is not a factor in the sound. Tires are good, Engine doesn't seem to be tied to the noise. Nothing noticed on body panels, air dam, etc... I suspect either transmission or possibly U-Joints.
View 3 RepliesI have a 4 cyl. '99 Chevy Malibu with 137K. Two weeks ago she started making a growling/rubbing noise coming from the front of the car. If I steer even a little to the right the noise goes away. If the steering wheel is straight or turned to the left the noise persists. The noise is always present, except when turning to the right and at when I slow to stop there becomes a slight oscillation in the noise.What is it? Is it hard to repair? I typically change my own brakes, alternator, tie-rods, and simpler car repair tasks.
View 2 RepliesSo I drive a 98 Honda, 118k miles, and for last month I've got a really strange noise coming from my front passenger side wheel. It happens when I apply the brakes, usually at a slow speed, slowing down from something like 30mph to a stop. When slowing down, if I have just a bit of pressure on the brake, the noise seems to go along with the speed of the wheels. It also happens when I accelerate from a stop.
I can only describe it as a kind of creaking noise, almost like it is coming from the spring. Sometimes it sounds a little tinny, sometimes not so much. I don't think its actually in the suspension, because it doesn't make noise if I go over speed bumps or press down on the fender. Brake pads have a good amount of pad left on them.
My hunch is that it might have something to do with the fact that I hardly ever drive anymore, somewhere around 10-20 miles a week, back and forth to the subway essentially (fair amount of time driving down banked turns in a parking garage if that adds any info). My dad knows a decent amount about cars, but he isn't sure what is going on, though he thinks it nothing dangerous. Strange wheel noises always make me wary though.
I have a 2002 Silverado 1500 Z-71. In 4 wheel drive, I can hear a humming/rubbing noise from the front end. Not real loud, but enough to get my attention. It happens at around 25 mph, and just as I'm coming to a stop. This is on the street.....going straight, not while turning. I only engage the 4 HI during street driving on a straight line drive just to "exercise" the gears and transfer case. I don't notice it on the dirt 'cause of trial noise levels. All fluid levels are normal in transfer case and axles. How much noise is normal during 4 wheel drive operations?
View 14 RepliesThe truck always made a few strange noises after shutdown, but this is new and annoying.
Here's the scenario: Truck is warm and no CEL. A few seconds after shutdown, I hear all the normal(?) noises and then a noise that sounds like a vacume pump running starts and continues for about 20 to 30 seconds. Cycling the key, but not starting the motor will cause the noise to happen again and again on each key on/off cycle.
The noise seems to be coming from the top front of the motor. Could this be fuel pressure bleeding off? Is there a check valve that is maybe not doing it's job??
Have a 1998 F-150....heard a strange noise coming from the front passenger side of the truck. Parked and turned the wheel and heard something fall off. It appears to be a shield of some sort.

View 7 RepliesI have noticed recently that I have a "rubbing" noise and vibration coming from the right front wheel on my FX4. It is most noticeable from 5-10 MPH, and more pronounced when turning right. it is not constant. It sounds almost like a brake pad rubbing on a badly warped, wet rotor. It goes away when I apply the brakes. I am thinking bearing or possible CV joint.
The dealer can't get it in until Tuesday, and they say I will have to pay the deductible on the ESP, even if it is related to the steering vibration they could not replicate or fix about a month ago. I am seriously considering going to another dealer for my service. Given, they did absorb the deductible last time, but they didn't fix the problem!
I have a 2003 Santa Fe, 2.4L.
Last night, I added some power steering stop leak to my PS system, but I accidentally spilled some below the reservoir. Soon after, that area of the engine starting making a consistent "spark"-type noise. I think it has something to do with the belt, because when I turn on AC, the noise gets a little faster in rhythm.
I say "spark" noise because it sounds like an electrical spark, rather than clicking or whining.
I just got a new car three weeks ago and I'm trying to sell my 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix GT myself. Since buying this new car, I haven't driven the Pontiac for 3 weeks. I started it tonight and it started just fine but when I started driving, I heard a clunking noise coming from the front end. I checked the wheels and didn't see anything (though I didn't check too thoroughly). It's definitely the front end. The car has about 158,000 miles on it and before I stopped driving it, it had no issues and did not have this clunking sound. I tried leaving the car running for 5 minutes at a time and then turning it off and then on again thinking it might be that I've just left it sit there but that didn't work.
View 7 RepliesRecently I have noticed a noise coming from the car. It is a cluck sort of noise, and it is definitely coming from the front end. I have tested turning and braking and the noise does not seem to be related to that. It seems to only happen when there is a quick transition in the road.
Think of the seam between a bridge and pavement where the bridge is an inch or more higher than the pavement. During normal dips and bumps it seems fine. I put the car up on jacks and removed both wheels. I went over everything to make sure it was snug. I took a rubber mallet and did a soft tap on various parts to see if I could get a rattle or clunk.
I have heard that camber plates can make noise. I am wondering if this could be the case. Many people have reported noise with GC plates, but I have not heard of IE plates doing this.
I have developed a sounds that sounds like metal on metal. Not a grinding but more of a "swish swish swish" light metal rubbing when the truck has been running a mile or two. I can barely hear it over the radio but its very noticeable when the window is down. It is not affected by the pressing the brakes and it gets louder and faster in direct portion to speed. It will occasionally leave and start right back up. I touched the front rim around the hub and it was hotter than I wanted to hold onto. It didn't burn but it was hot. It was 105 degrees that day. Here is what I have done.
I replaced that front hub in 2010 and probably have 50K miles on it. I did the 3-9 test and there was no noticeable play. I spun the hub and while it seems to spin ok it does seem a little dry.... I will pull it tomorrow and see what it looks like.
I pulled the calipers off and the brakes pads are at half way and there is no burnt smell. I spun the rotor and it seemed flat and straight. I do have a small tiny lip all the way around them on both sides but I figured that's normal with 265K. I pulled the pins and they were dry but they didn't seem to be sticking. I cleaned them up with the boots and am going to replace them when I get some brake grease tomorrow. I have not looked real hard at the caliper but I plan on pressing that with a C-Clamp tomorrow to check it. Since the rotors and pads looked OK, I assumed there was not a stuck caliper although haven't ruled it out. The axle behind the hub seem to spin freely before I removed all this stuff and the hubs are not locked.
I think I covered it all .. I also thought it could be a rock or stick but nothing came out of my caliper or rotor when I took them off ..
I've been hearing a rhythmic, metallic ringy grinding noise coming from the driver side front end of the car that seems to be in time with wheel rotation. It happens between 5 and 40mph, worsens while the steering wheel is turned even the slightest to the right, goes away completely during left turns, reduces and becomes intermittent above 45mph, and between 0 and 5mph, as I turn the wheel to the right from any position, I hear squeaking. I recently had the front control arm, ball joints and struts replaced. It has 140k miles. What could it be?
View 4 RepliesMy dad has a 2012 6.7 powerstroke with about 84,000 kms on it. Truck runs great, works great, but has a noise that sounds like its coming from a pump of some sort on the engine. I know nothing about these trucks and told him I would see what I could find out before we take it to the dealer to see if its a warranty issue. Video below.....
