Eye Exam :: Swelling In The Optic Nerves And High Pressure Cerebral Fluid

Jun 14, 2013

A $60 eye exam revealed swelling in the optic nerves that got me a referral an eye specialist, the eye specialist then told me I most likely have high pressure cerebral fluid that is causing the swelling and need a CAT scan to look for brain tumors, no brain tumors were found ....... but the cerebral fluid must be drained to prevent continuous swelling of the optic nerves that will cause separation & blindness.

The CAT scan cost me $1,000

The cerebral fluid draining cost me $1,700

The cerebral fluid draining required a large needle to puncture through the lumbar area into my lower spinal cords, as the lumbar area does not have 1 solid nerve as the upper portion, it is basically like spaghetti so there is NO risk of paralysis when done by professionals with a live X-ray machine to line up the needle between vertebra for safe insertion.

I don't know what measurement scale they used, but the pressure reading was above 40+. They told me normal pressure should be between 8 and 12.

They then drained the pressure to about 18

As I was walking out of the hospital, I had never in my life had such extreme mental clarity and excellent vision.

Shortly afterwards, I noticed that my normal clumsiness was gone that I had dealt with all my life.

Reading
Math
Memory
Physical agility
Strength
Desire
Aggressiveness
too many to list

As I know all my life I was mentally slower than average until that procedure. It has been 1 1/2 years since then, and starting 2 months ago I noticed diminished capacity slowly creeping up as before, as I probably need the procedure done again and don't have the money to do it.I realized that if this high cerebral pressure would have been detected as a child, I could have gotten a better education if it had been corrected.

Eye Care :: Elevated Optic Nerves

I am a sixty year old female and went for my annual eye exam.  I was told by my optometrist my left eye optic nerves were elevated - OS>OD.  Also has irregular Mac. OS.  She had her nurse call and make an appointment for me to see an Ophthalmologist tomorrow.  I had a Brian MRI in December and the report reads.  "There is nonspecific mild focal areas of bilateral supratentorial which is commonly secondary to chronic microvascular ischemia.  MS seems less likely, but cannot be excluded".

I have intermittent headaches only on the left side and at times feel nauseous.   Should I be concerned?

Multiple Sclerosis :: Optic Nerves Swollen With MS?

The Drs thought I had Pseudotumor Cerebri, since my optic nerves have in swollen since Oct 2013. I had a MRI and Spinal tap. Found out my pressure was too low. But they found oligoclonal bands in my CSF. BUT concluded not enough evidence for MS. I have many symptoms of MS. My leg has been numb and burning in my thigh all day. Has anyone experienced their optic nerves swollen with MS? I'm not talking about inflammation in the nerves just swollen. Worried about going blind and trying to figure out what's wrong. I'm waiting for the Michigan head and pain neurology clinic to set me up with an appt.

Multiple Sclerosis :: Thinning Of Optic Nerves

I went to a neuro-ophthalmologist due to some issues with my right eye. Blurry spot. Nothing too crazy, but annoying.

He did Optical coherence tomography (OCT) and vision field test. The vision field test came out fine, but the OCT showed thinning of the optic nerve. He told me he wanted me to be seen for an evaluation of possible MS.

After posting here a earlier this month about whether or not to go see a neuro, I had made an appointment with an MS Specialist. I see him on June 3rd.

Any idea what thinning of the optic nerves can mean?

Cerebral Sinus Thrombosis - Tension Headaches And Optic Nerve Damage

I'm 32. It was only detected after suffering 2 weeks of intense headaches which eventually affected my optic nerves in my eyes. I wear glasses and after 2 weeks of intense headaches my eyesight actually became much better which baffled me. I was sent away from GP with the diagnosis of a tension headache (which I don't hold any blame for) but luckily I pursued further and booked an immediate appt with an Optician who found that my visual field was affected in my left eye. I was advised to go to the Emergency Eye Casualty who continued with further tests on my eyes. They discovered the damage to my optic nerves but at this point were unable to find the source and I was seen immediately by a Neurologist who at first thought it was benign cranial hypertension. He arranged a CT scan and said that he did not expect to find anything but was very surprised to see the clot on the CT. I was admitted immediately and underwent a lumber puncture. I spent 5 days in hospital and was discharged on Warfarin medication for 3 months. I have since undergone a repeat CT scan. I believe I was very lucky as any longer I could have had a stroke. I was advised to stop the oral contraceptive pill immediately as they said this may have been the cause but also that I have recently underwent a breast reduction 3 months before.

Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension :: Acute High Blood Pressure, Blocked Ears, Head Pressure

I am a fit, healthy 28 year old guy who has spontaneously developed severe high blood pressure, temporal pressure headaches, dizzy spells and blocked ears. The symptoms vary, with acute periods lasting a couple hours and occurring on a weekly basis. Generally an acute period is characterized by severe headaches, needing to lie down, blocked ears and extreme lethargy.

I have had CT’s and MRI’s of the brain and cervical spine, PET scans, ECHO’s, a multitude of blood tests and various other tests with no abnormalities.

I gym 4 times a week, eat healthy and work as a hairdresser, so my lifestyle is pretty healthy overall.

This condition is starting to limit my lifestyle and with two years of no answers I am putting it out there for someone to recognize or provide advice about what could potentially be going on!

Hypertension :: High Carbohydrate Food Causes High Blood Pressure (100/170)?

i am not overweight. Drink a healthy smoothie and whole grain cereal almost every morning yet my BP is still high. (100/170). I was  told it may be because of elevated insulin levels caused by the fruit drinks and whole grains (as well as the potato, rice, pasta and breads) that I eat. These are things that easily break down into sugars and cause the issue. (Basically a carb issue). Am I supposed to go on one of those caveman diets? Has anyone tried lowering their carb intake to lower their BP?

Cardiovascular :: High P Wave And High Diastolic Pressure

Let me start off by saying I am a 20 year old male who was fine before all of this started. I went to the ER for chest pain and palpitations they did the basic test like EKG Xray and Blood work. The ER doctor said i was fine and they let em go home but said i need to see a cardiologist to just make sure everything was fine. So i went to see a cardiologist and the hospital faxed over all of my test results. Based on my ER visits EKG i have an abnormally high P wave everything else on the EKG was fine. They set me up for a Echocardiogram to make sure i did not have an enlarged heart. that test came back normal and they said i did not have a enlarged heart. They set me up for a Stress Echo test I went in for the test got my heart rate up to 200bpm the before and after pictures of my heart looked good and they said everything was working fine and that i was healthy. But during the test i still have those high P waves showing up on the EKG which he said was caused because I am very thin chested and my hear beats close to the surface of my chest so the EKG pick up a higher voltage. Now i have noticed a slight arrhythmia when i take my pulse it tends to beat at 60 bpm then 5 or 6 beats later it jumps to 80 bpm then back to 60 after 5 or so beats. This comes and goes and does not happen all the time and when it does happen it only last up to 30 minutes but during that time i feel fatigued . And finally my blood pressure seems high the systolic pressure is always within normal range its the diastolic that always above normal when i tested my blood pressure with a home blood pressure monitor today it was at 135 over 87 then when i tested it later on in the day it was 127 over 83 i have noticed in multiple test the diastolic seem to float around the mid 80's to 90's the highest i have seen is 133 over 99. The cardiologist does not see to think there is anything wrong with me I have another appointment this week to bring up the high blood pressure and the arrhythmia.

Neurological Disorders :: Discolouration On Optic Nerve With Septo-Optic Dysplasia

I have Septo-optic dysplasia, and I'm lucky if I ever get to see someone who's even heard of it because it's apparently one of those rare and awkward conditions with varying symptoms. But basically, in my case, the nerves in my eyes didn't develope well or at all.

I have 6/60-6/48 vision in my right eye and 0 in my left eye; as in I don't even see black or anything at all. I don't think light could ever get in there.

My most recent check up at the Optician showed some discoloration on the optic nerve in my left eye (the blind eye). It appeared black, apparently, which my Optician said meant it had been there a long time, as opposed to grey? But no one seems to know if this is normal for an optic nerve that never formed properly.

Apparently the discoloration is not mentioned in any of my letters on record, though. Is that weird? That's the only thing making me worried. Some people say it should be obvious so not included, but others say that means it's new?

Kidney :: Creatinine Level (4.29) Is High With Swelling

Hi my creatinine level jumped from 1.5 in Jan  2014 to 4.29 in July 2014.  My legs and feet suddenly started swelling and I urinate frequently. Since all this started,I'm also thirsty all the time. Also, I guess it's pertinent to mention that my mother (73) just started dialysis, which she does at home herself.  My daughter is now on the kidney transplant list, she's 30, but hers is attributed to Graves Disease, I believe. Is Kidney issues hereditary? .

Tooth Abscess :: Jaw Pressure And Gums Swelling After Removal

Had abscessed tooth on top under gold crown. At the same time bottom gums swelled and I was told that one of my back molars needed extracted. Had 3 teeth pulled. My gums are still swollen on bottom which all doctors say they look pink and healthy. I feel pressure in my jaw. I feel like I'm being strangled in my throat. Now I feel like I'm in a tunnel when I speak. All these symptoms came one after the other and I don't know what to do. I have had a CT scan, a scan of my jaw, and an MRI of my jaw. The doctors say they don't see an infection. I don't understand what is going on. What ever this is, it seems to be spreading. The last oral surgeon I saw said the symptoms may be due to different things but I don't think so. Has anyone had anything similar?
