Foot / Ankle :: Bleeding From Incision Tarsal Tunnel Surgery

I had surgery for tarsal tunnel on Tuesday, December 22nd. I've been moving around on crutches, which I find very hard to do. LOL My husband picks at me because he says I am not even coordinated enough to walk on crutches.
Anyway, ever so often I will remove the aircast just to let my foot "breathe". They have an ace bandage all the way up almost to my knee and some type of bandaging underneath the ace bandage.
On the inside of the aircast is a big bloody spot and there is a bloody spot on the ace bandage. Oh, I'd say about 3 to 4 inches long.
Should I be worried that it is bleeding? Or is this normal?

Is there anyone that would be willing to share their journey post tarsal tunnel release surgery with me. This has been and is so hard. I had the open procedure on the right foot and need it on the left when I heal. I notice no real change in sensation. I know it could take up to a year but I was wondering what different people experienced. The doctor found varicose veins wrapped around all three branches. He said the nerves looked healthy-whatever that is worth. They feel pathetic. He just moved the veins "out of the way" What prevents them from migrating back around the nerve? I don't think deep varicose veins in the feet are something that can be removed. But if I don't feel better soon, I am going to opt for bilateral below the knee amputations. I know the recovery is slow. I have been out of work for over 4 months because I kept injuring my ankles and finally tore the peroneal tendon in the right leg. That was fixed in December. Then I got sciatica and they found 4 herniated discs. Wound up with three epidural injections in the spine. It was only after that resolved that they would even address the tarsal tunnel. I went to 3 different doctors with no diagnosis until I really screwed up my ankle tearing the tendon. What gives with this disorder? I have never come across it. I don't know if I will ever be able to return to work. My whole life is in shambles right now.

I couldn't take it anymore and finally called for my test results. I don't see the dr until Feb 8th. From my sprain on Oct 30th he says I have instability in my ankle that has not improved with PT and wearing a brace so he ordered the MRI to see what was going on before we schedule surgery. Apparently it didn't show any tears, which I find very hard to believe since he was certain I had at least one if not more in addition to my high ankle sprain. Anyway, maybe he will see something the radiologist didn't.
Has anyone else has tendinitis and tarsal tunnel? I'm curious on how you were treated. I was on crutches for 2 weeks after the injury, then it wasn't improving so I went to an orthopedic during the 3rd week in which he put me in a brace and sent me for 6 weeks of PT. After my recheck was when he sent me for the MRI and EMG (because of numbness & tingling) and said give it another 4 weeks of healing and prescribed me a dose of steroids. At that point he discussed the possibility of going in to tighten up the ligaments in my ankle because it's so "loose".

I have had ankle problems with pain and instability for about 7 years and have had two surgeries to try to repair my ligaments thinking that instability was my main problem and the cause of my pain. After my first surgery (brostrom)failed to relieve any pain and after about 6 months my instability came back as well I had another surgery (complete lateral ligament reconstruction w/ cadaver tendon) which I am 4 months post op from and am still having extreme pain and even rolled my ankle while wearing a brace.
The pain I have and have had for about 2 years is an intense burning pain starting from the inside of my arch by my big toe wrapping around my heel behind my ankle bone and sometimes on a bad day the pain extends into the side of my calf. It happens whenever I am active especially when doing anything other than walking. (Speed walking, hopping, one leg balances) I also have nerve pain that locks my whole foot out and sends tingling pain into my big toe when ever tapping on a spot on the outside/ front of my ankle. When I get this pain it is so strong that I can barely stand or walk and takes hours to wear off after activity. Does anyone have any idea what this would be? Has anyone had anything like this? Is this why none of my surgeries have seemed to work because they are correcting the wrong problem?

I just had tarsal tunnel release yesterday and am wondering what others took for pain. My doctor asked me what I generally take and I told him NORCO. I've taken it for years, sparingly, for back pain and am wondering if I've built up a tolerance as it's not working too well right now.
He was so generous to give my husband his cell number since it's the holidays so we could call him if needed but I don't want to seem like a wimp.
I have addison's disease and pain is not good for me at all.

I feel I have been getting no help from foot doctor. Hopefully someone here can help. I am 13 weeks post op for tarsal tunnel and plantar fasciitis surgery. I have recently thrown my back out because I can not walk right. I am walking on part of my incision. It feels like it is going to rip open, burns and this part looks different from the rest of inclusion. My doctor is giving me ultrasound therapy on incision but it is not working. I asked to go to physical therapy but he does not believe in it. I am at wits end. Hurts foot to walk and walking makes my back feel better. I am not in any form of a cast. I am walking with sneakers that he recommended. No arch support because that is where incision is located. I am getting very depressed with summer here and I can not enjoy it. I do not see the doctor for 2 more weeks. Any advice or suggestions? I keep getting Vicodin for pain but I am afraid of getting addicted. Can not take Advil or anything in that family.

I'm looking for any kind of help/relief from tarsal tunnel symptoms and pain. I had a severe sprain (lateral ankle and high ankle) the end of October that has just turned into so many additional problems, one of them now being tarsal tunnel. I've had the EEG to confirm. I've done cortisone, steroids, PT with ultrasound and all kinds of other treatments. I need to have ankle reconstruction done and they are planning on the tarsal tunnel release at the same time. It should have been scheduled and done already, but I managed to herniate L5/S1 so bad that surgery couldn't wait on my back. I'm almost at 3 mos post op for that. With the recovery for that all my ankle problems had subsided because I wasn't working or on my feet much at all.
Now I'm back to work and living my normal life again - all the pain and swelling is coming back. In the last week, the aching, burning and tingling has kept me up three nights. I try and stay off my feet at work as much as I can (I only work 3 days, 5-6 hrs a day), but by the time I get home my foot hurts so bad I could cry. It's the inside ankle, heal, arch and now even the front of my ankle going up into my shin. I bought some KT tape and plan to take it to PT (for my back) to see if they will show me how to apply it for my ankle.
Any advise or similar symptoms. I have an appointment to follow up this Thursday. I'm hoping for maybe another injection (last one was in January) just to get me through til I get the surgery. I really don't want this during the summer, I'd much rather hold off until early fall.

I just had tarsal tunnel surgery and it's been about 5 days. I was wondering whether anyone has had this surgery done and how long does it take before you start feeling better? I have about just the same amount of pain now after surgery. I'm beginning to wonder if it didn't work at all?
I know this procedure is rare so, please, if you had it, can you tell me your experience?

I had tarsal tunnel surgery on 12/22/15 and my foot is actually worse. Now when I walk all of my toes are numb. The bottom of my foot is still numb and the inside of my big toe and the adjacent side of my second toe is numb.
My big toe was numb before surgery but it is worse now.
The stitches are out and the wound is not healing properly. They told me that is not uncommon with a wound like this because every time you put weight on it it can separate a little bit.
Just sitting here right now I can move my toes and they tingle a LOT.
Can anyone else tell me if this is "common"? I have read that it can take quite a while to heal from tarsal tunnel surgery.

I was recently diagnosed with this in both feet. I'm still not sure what caused it though I am postpartum, have flat feet and wore poorly fitting shoes. I had cortisone shots which only seemed to irritate the nerves in both feet. I just started PT but am desperate to hear that others have recovered without surgery. I know that only the horror stories usually make it online but I'm getting very depressed about all of this

I fractured my left ankle, the fibula, on March 1st. It was classified as a lateral malleolus fracture. I was put in a splint in the ER and saw an OS two days later, who put me in a fiberglass cast for 4 more weeks. After two weeks, he re x-rayed and said all looked good, so he told me to start putting weight on it over the next few days until I was full weight bearing. It felt better every day and I was sure I was on the path to recovery. At the 4 week point I went back in to hopefully have the cast removed and transition into a walking boot. The cast was cut off and my ankle was x-rayed again to make sure all was still on track. My OS came in a few minutes later and informed me that he did not see any signs that the bone was healing, in fact the area between the break had increased, which he showed me on the x-ray. He said my fracture appeared to be a delayed union and I needed it to be surgically repaired. Not the news I had expected and definitely a setback mentally and emotionally.
I had a plate with 5 screws placed on the outside of my fibula, a compression screw placed up through it and a bone graft done this past Monday, April 6th. I was told I would wake up with a splint on and would most likely be casted or put in a boot at my post-op this coming Thursday, April 16th. When I awoke from the surgery I immediately noticed I had a boot on instead of a splint. I questioned it and the nurse told me my OS thought I would recover quickly and this way I could shower, etc. in a few days. I have 10 staples in the side of my ankle and the rigid side of the boot lays right across my incision. I called my OS's office Wednesday and explained to a nurse that the boot was pressing on my incision so hard that it was almost unbearable. She spoke to my OS who said to assure me that the discomfort is just a normal part of the recovery process and it will get better. I'm now 6 days post-op and have showered, changed bandages, etc. My incision looks great and does not bother me at all until I put my darn boot on, which I am supposed to wear at all times to keep my Achilles tendon stretched. I have tried adding extra padding over my incision under my ace wrap, but the boot still presses hard right up against my incision and causes burning, stinging and just overall discomfort. Has anyone else dealt with this?

I am 7 1/2 weeks post of from Flat Foot Surgery and the outside area of foot from where my incision ends from the double calcaneal osteotomy up to my little toe the soft tissue is halfway numb and very painful. Has anyone else experienced this and if so how long did it last.
I am not sure how long it takes the soft tissue to heal to a point where it does not hurt when you are not walking. Or is what I am feeling nerve pain. I started PT this week and am PWB. My doctor thinks I will be in a shoe in 3 weeks and I don't know at this rate how that could be possible. I am icing a majority of the day for sure after I do my PT exercises.

I had ankle surgery to repair my medial malleolus back on May 8. It was fairly routine--just 2 screws. I was in a cast for a week, then was put into a boot but told to treat it like a cast--NO weight bearing for 7 weeks, keep the boot on 24/7 unless in the bathtub. I followed directions religiously.
I did notice that when I pressed on certain areas of the foot, I would feel a sharp pain. This occurred in the heel (from the bottom), toes (again, from the bottom, primarily the foot pad below the pinky, second, and 4th toes). When I asked the doctor about this, he said (around week 5) that it was just because I hadn't been using the foot.
The problem persisted, and this week, week 7, I was cleared to start partial weight-bearing--walking in the boot while taking approximately 1/2 the weight off my foot via the crutches. I don't have ankle pain to speak of (or at least, not often and only if I overdo it), but I have terrible shooting pains in my heel and toes as I step. It's OK if I take most of the weight on the crutches, but as soon as I go to more than just a little weight on the boot, the pain starts.
This week I also started PT and the therapist told me this is nerve pain--not uncommon after surgery (don't know why the doctor couldn't have told me this, but OK). I couldn't get much of an idea from her how long this will persist or if there is anything I can do about it.
I'm doing my ankle and leg exercises (those are mostly non-weightbearing at this point) and they are going great. The ankle is clearly healing well. But I don't see how I can progress to full weight bearing (supposed to try that next week!) when much more than a little pressure on the foot results in this nerve pain!
Help! Does anyone have experience with this? Is there anything I can do to speed things along? I need to return to my second job (barefoot hoof trimming for horses--how I broke the ankle!) ASAP and I'm fearful this will slow my progress to a crawl! The doctor is useless.

I am 7 and a half weeks post op after a Lapidus & an Akin procedure. I was in cast until last week and have managed a tennis type shoe and a sandal on so far.
The swelling has been bad as expected with full weight bearing, but the real pain is in the ball of my foot and my big toe does not lie flat, but rather sits elevated. I think the ball of the foot under the big toe is swollen so that may be the cause? I can only walk for a few minutes properly before the pain becomes too much and I am limping and walking on the outside of my operated foot. I can usually cope with pain so know this must be fairly severe.
I am doing my toe bending exercises and think that already the range of motion is not too bad.

After having surgery on both the 4th and 5th metatarsal with plates and screws holding everything I have pain on the ball of my foot. I haven't yet started walking, I've been in no weight bearing. It's been three weeks and a half since surgery and the bottom of my foot really hurts when pressed upon. After almost a month this doesn't seem normal. Should I be worried. I will ask the doctor about this on my next visit when he pulls out the k wire.
The ball of my foot hurts also when I do toe exercise such as curling in and out.
Each visit to the doctor he tells me not to walk and put put weight on my foot. I tell him each time that I can't if I wanted to as it hurts to barely try.

I was diagnosed with small (<1cm) OCD of the tibial plafond and lax lateral ligaments. I am now facing a microfracture and a Brostrom is about a month. Has anyone had both procedures together and what was your experience?

I've meet with several Dr's that have recommended shortening the second Metatarsal. I have done all the conservative approaches and have ran out of options. Cortisone injections, shoe inserts and anti inflammatory medicine and a lot of icing! This foot pain has been going on for many years but lately I haven't been getting any relief!
Can anyone tell me whether they have had much success with this type of surgery?

On November 22, 2013, I had hammertoe surgery in my right foot. Incisions were made in the back of all four toes besides the big toe to release the tendon. The second toe was more rigid than all the others so it needed more work. Part of the knuckle had to be removed to slightly shorten the toe and a bone graph was put in. So, that toe had an incision in the back like the others and stitches on the top.
I was in a surgical shoe for four weeks, then tennis shoes for two weeks, then I could transition into other shoes. Recovery was pretty painful. I kept my foot elevated and iced it for the first week. I only walked when I had to use the restroom, and for the first few days that was almost impossible. It hurt so bad I ended up hopping to the bathroom on my other foot. So I got that surgery done in November and now it is March and my foot is doing great. Sometimes there is still slight pain in the second toe, it's still healing. My toes aren't 100% back to normal yet but I think they are close. I can walk/run on them with no problem.
I just had the same exact surgery on my left foot on February 28, 2014. This time I requested crutches since it was unbearable to walk on my foot the first time. I went home with crutches and used them for the first 4 days. Then on the 5th day I started to try to put pressure on my foot and begin to walk on it without the crutches. I thought the pain was getting better but it is now day 8 and I am in a lot of pain. My foot feels very hot, there is a burning sensation, and there are some stabbing pains. Usually the pain meds (Vicodin) help a lot with the pain. But tonight after taking one and seeing no improvement I took another, and still my foot is hurting very badly and I don't know what to do. Today is Friday and on Monday I have to go back to school so I'm trying to walk more and more everyday to prepare myself for having to walk around campus. I've already gone through this surgery before so I knew what to expect but so far the recovery for this foot has been slightly different from the first.
The pain is keeping me awake so I'm hoping it will ease off soon.
I would love to hear anyone's post-hammertoe surgery stories. Similarities or differences between our surgeries.

I went for all the fun preop tests today in preparation for my second reconstruction happening in two weeks. I'm starting to go a little crazy realizing everything I still need to do before the surgery. ..finish prepping my house, rent the knee walker, finish Christmas shopping! Yikes! In some ways it's easier having an idea what to expect the second time around, but in other ways knowing what the next few months will be like makes it harder.
Those of you who have had the joy of having to have pttd surgery on both feet, how did foot number one hold up to crutches, etc? Any suggestions for a successful second recovery?

I will be having Flatfoot Reconstruction Surgery in May and am trying to get a handle on the recovery. I live in a small 1 bedroom apartment, ground floor, but with 2 semi-steep steps leading inside.
I'd love to know anyone's experience with steps/stairs after this type of surgery. Also am looking for a recommendation for a good foam wedge for foot elevation...and actually anything else you might want to share. I'm a bit overwhelmed at how arduous the recovery may be.
