Gastroenterology :: Acute Pain And Swollen Large Intestine

Nov 29, 2015

My 14 year old son was in the hospital for 3 days and they could not figure out what was wrong with him.  When I took him to ER, he had been vomiting and his diarrhea had blood in it.  They did a CT scan and told me he had to have surgery because he had appendicitis.  Then when referred to a surgeon he told us that it wasn't his appendix that his large intestine is swollen and therefore his appendix is swollen.  In the meantime my son was in so much pain the throwing up stopped however the diarrhea with blood continued.  They just started him on liquids and pain medication.  Then, they collected 3 stool samples to test for colitis, and different bacteria's.  Everything came out negative.  Then a GI doctor checked my son and reviewed all test and told us that he had food poisoning and that he would have to let it take it's course.  So, after 3 days they released my son from the hospital and told me to just give him Tylenol for the pain.  To make sure he drinks plenty of liquids and he has to be on a lactose free diet for two weeks.  Well my son is home and he is still in pain but the diarrhea has stopped.  I left the hospital frustrated because they ran so many test and could not tell me what was wrong.  They just said that he will be in pain for a couple of more days because his large intestine was swollen.  Can you help me or give me some follow up advice because my son still does not look well and he still gets sudden pains that come and go.  Could he have Crohn's disease?

Ulcerative Colitis :: Ileostomy - Removal Of Large Intestine

I had ulcerative colitis for many years. It was being treated with steroids. It would flare up occasionally and I would have to take extra treatment. Eventually, after about 10 years of this, I had a flare up that would not go away. I had to stop work and after about a year, I was sent to have an ileostomy. for those who don't know what this is, it is complete removal of the large bowel. I am now left with an opening in my abdominal wall. This is where the faeces exits. I have to attach a pouch to this and change it each day. It sounds drastic but it was the best thing that I had done for me. I have not looked back since then and that was exactly 10 years ago. However, I have to be fairly careful about my diet. I eat most things but I have a very high fibre diet especially when it comes to bread. Mostly I will eat only granary bread. If I have wholemeal or white, I get very loose motions. I hope this is of interest to anybody contemplating surgery.

Large Swollen Area On My Penile Shaft

There is a large lump on the right underside of my penile shaft, I haven't had sex and know its not a sexual disease. It appeared all of the sudden last night when I noticed it while I was in the shower. It looked like a swollen pimple almost so i proceeded to try to pop it (probably a bad idea) there is now an indention not unlike a hair follicle has been dug out. There was a decent amount of blood that came out of the surrounding area (most likely because I scratched it while trying to "pop" whatever is causing the lump. Its been a day since that and I checked on it again shortly before writing this. There is still a lot of welling in the area and I put some topical antibiotic on it (neosporin) just now to avoid it becoming infected. I would like to know if this is something I can just ride out with the proper care, or if I need to go to a doctor.

Sciatica :: How To Cure Acute Pain?

I have been diagnosed with spinal disc herniation on L4 and L5 on my back + spondylolisthesis. I was relatively pain free for about a month until all of the sudden the pain came back a week ago, now stronger than ever. It's typical sciatica pain, shooting down pain from my right lower back all the way to the right ankle. When I sit down it helps but I literally can't walk for more than about 100metres at a time, the pain comes too much. I've already been out of work for the whole week and really can't afford more so I'm desperate for some relief.

I've been to the doctors a couple of times this week. So far they have given me: Arcoxia 90mg (tried that twice, no relief), Naproxen 500mg (no relief), Co-codamol 30/500mg (took three of these one day,no relief) and now I've taken Amitriptyline 25mg at nights. I've slept fine but it has not had any sort of an affect during the day. I haven't taken any of these together though, I mean I've just taken one medicine at a time.

If anyone has ANY idea what could help in this acute pain, I'd really appreciate it! Has anyone tried sea salt with their bath, how does that work? I've heard people have got some help of that. And next time I'm going to my GP (probably in a couple of days), any ideas what medicine I should ask for?

Vasectomy :: Acute Pain In Right Testicle And In Right Abdomen

I had a vasectomy 11 days ago. I rested, stayed off my feet mostly for a few days, used ice packs, all the ordered behaviors. My incision still hasn't healed well despite wearing compression shorts for 9 days. On about day 8 I started applying antibacterial cream and breathable sterile pad taped down over the incision to prevent infection (and was also on antibiotics for a sinus infection). There was no sign of infection, no visible sign of hematoma. But the incision remains a bit raw, like a split lip that seeps. The dissolvable stitches mostly came out within 6-9 days.

However, my right teste or epididymis is extremely sore still (I felt better from day 4-8 except when sitting a lot), swollen and riding high. When I sit upright for awhile at work, I also get an acute pain in my right inguinal area about 6" in from the hip bone. It feels like a nerve issue. It twinges and throbs when I stand and today is even making walking painful.

Any thoughts? Acute epididymitis? Sperm granuloma? Nerve damage? Normal recovery? I had a single-incision closed vas with excision, clips and cauterization.

I agree with the copious comments on the web -- the urologists need to do a FAR better job with the honest assessment of recovery. I was under the impression that this would all be largely resolved within 3-4 days. Instead, the past 3 days just keep getting worse with no clear self-diagnosis. I'm calling my urologist again tomorrow and insisting on a checkup....

Cataflam Effective In Treatment Of Acute Pain?

Is cataflam effective in treatment of acute pain? Can I take it to relieve toothache? What dose is recommended in toothache? I used to take it to relieve headache, but I'm not sure if it would be effective in treatment of more intensive pain caused by tooth inflammation.

Herpes :: Pain Due To Acute Herpetic Keratitis

This is the rather scary title for Viral Cold Sore Infection (EYES). I have no idea where it came from as I have never had a cold sore ever. I only know that it is extremely painful. It started 12days ago,and I just thought I had probably got a bit of gardening debris in the eye and used Optrex to soothe it, By Thursday it was very sore bloodshot and the lids were a little swollen .So I rang the GP for an emergency visit I met a locum, obviously newly qualified. I explained that there was a lot of pain under my upper lid. She duly looked at my eye which she said was perfect .so ,i tried again saying it felt as though there was a razor blade under the lid She lifted the lid and said she couldn't see anything and to come back if it got worse It did get worse over the next Three days. so Monday morning I went to where I should have gone in the first place, the Eye clinic at the hospital  It opens at 8-30,I wa there at 8 as I know it gets very busy. Duly seen and given drops and a thorough  looking at ,and he told me the reasons and even bothered to show me the pictures ,looked like three, ( yes I have three of the blighters  squiggles gave me some eye drops and an appointment for next week. It is now Wednesday and eleven drops later....

Thyroid Disorders :: Goiter - Acute Pain And Fever

So for the last few weeks or longer I was sporadically feeling a lumpiness in my throat, especially while sleeping.  I thought it was how I lie in bed while reading.  Then this lumpiness, this weird feeling that isn't exactly painful just awkward and uncomfortable is a daily annoyance.  So bad in fact I felt nausea from the feeling in my neck.  Sort of like something is rolling up and out; of course nothing ever did.  So now this feeling his constant I feel like I'm either vomiting or choking.  Lovely!  So I also have asthma so my breathing is not 100% in the first place, add tightness to my throat and what? Full blown panic attack sure, lets not sleep tonight.  So I finally drag my feet to a Dr.  guess what PA says I have an enlarged thyroid, i.e. Goiter.  So now I am to have a thyroid ultrasound blood work.  Now this goiter is extremely uncomfortable, borderline painful; especially when I swallow, cough or yawn (oh yawning *****).  Is this simply because I am now aware of this enlargement in my body. The pain and discomfort seemed to become more acute during a 24 hour fever spike, which is what motivated me see a Dr in the first place.

Gastroenterology :: Green Stool, Clear Urine, Pain, Nausea 3 Months After Gallbladder Removal

I am a 16 year old girl who for the most part was healthy prior to the start of my digestive problems.   I am 5"3 and have never weighed over 99 lbs but my weight has now dropped to below 94 lbs due to inability to eat without pain and nausea.  Around August 2011, I started having moderate-severe nausea and abdominal pain following most/all meals, which over time progressed to be nearly constant pain and nausea that made eating nearly unbearable.  Starting in early March, I had multiple blood tests, an ultrasound, a HIDA scan, and an upper endoscopy.  The only explanation offered to my mother (a doctor) and myself was that my gallbladder was hyperactive and excreted bile way too quickly, with an ejection fraction of 89%.  Normal ejection fractions are considered to be roughly between 30-75%, but high ejection fractions are a gray area in the medical world at the moment, as most bad gallbladders have a low ejection fraction.  All the children's surgeons refused to take out my gallbladder for this reason, but with it being our only hope we searched for a surgeon willing to take the chance.  We were luckily able to find a surgeon with some knowledge of hyperactive gallbladders who removed my gallbladder in early May.  My surgery went well and there were no complications immediately following.  I did not have constant diarrhea following my procedure and my pain and nausea were alleviated until approximately early-mid June.   I began having moderate nausea and pain again following nearly all foods and some drinks such as slushies or shakes.  It increasingly worsened but has not yet reached the constant pain/nausea i was experiencing pre-surgery.  I also had approximately 3-5 bouts that lasted about 10-20 minutes of extreme nearly unbearable pain, usually in my left abdomen just below the ribs approximately 20-30 minutes after I had eaten.  Each time brought me to the floor and to tears.  I visited the GI doctor again July 5 and was told their best explanation was Functional Dyspepsia and that I should begin taking 30g Amitriptyline each night.  I was told results should appear approximately 3 weeks after I start regular dosage, which I did on July 5.  I have seen some improvement in my pain and nausea as they do not necessarily occur after every single time I eat anymore, but they are still way too frequent and persistent for me to feel normal, much less function normally.  Over the past week or so, my stools have been a bright green color and my urine has been clear for the most part. There seems to be no connection between my symptoms and my hormones as they do not worsen or alleviate with my menstrual cycle.   I am sick and tired of being so sick and tired as my symptoms have majorly impacted my life and prevented me from participating in many things as they caused me to miss over 40 days of school just since January 2012.  Please please please offer any ideas or thoughts you might have, i truly am desperate.

Bowel Disorder :: Large Rectocele And A Large Rectum

I have just joined this forum, but been reading it for a while. I have had no surgery yet, don't even know if it will be offered, but am already suffering from many of the problems mentioned in this thread. I have a large rectocele and a large rectum. Consultant not sure what to do- proctogram inconclusive. Since I saw the consultant a couple of weeks ago, things seem to have got dramatically worse- needing more Movicol. Also tried a suppository today.Rectal pain and numbness. The consultant may examine me under anaesthetic. I also have another problem which is complicating everything- venous insufficiency- like varicose veins- have to wear compression stockings all the time and elevate my feet as much as possible. I am convinced it was caused by straining on the loo, so from what you are all saying, there is no guarantee that surgery would prevent straining.I just don't know what to do. Surgery sounds so risky, but I can't live like this. I could try Peristeen I suppose, if they thought it suitable for me. Might also try the Milk of magnesia if I can get my hands on it.

Eye Care :: Large IOL Available For Large Pupils?

I apparently have very large pupils. I had cataract surgery, and the first lens created unmanageable halos, starbursts and ghosting.  A larger replacement IOL of 6.3MM optic diameter improved but did not remove these symptoms, and it does not stay in place. I have been told this is the largest lens available but have seen references to 'older' lenses as big as 7mm. My surgeon suggests stitching the existing lens in place.  Are larger lenses available (I am in Canada) and should a larger lens be used?

Gastroenterology :: What Causes Spasm During Cholangiogram?

I was diagnosed with gallstones last 2014 but I only had my gallbladder removed through open cholecystectomy recently last November 29, 2015. The surgeons placed a t-tube drain and discharged me with it. They scheduled me for cholangiogram December 17, 2015 but the result showed that there's still a faint filling in the common bile duct so they scheduled for follow-up cholangiogram on January 4, 2016. During the second cholangiogram, this time there was a distinct pain during the procedure so they had to stop it. Two hours after, I know something was wrong because I felt cold then my temperature shoot up to 38.9 degree Centigrade. I felt slight pressure at the lower abdomen like I feel an urge to defecate and a few minutes I vomited. I was hospitalized, given antibiotics and hydrated. My doctor told me that it was an expected outcome after a cholangiogram. He said he would refer me to a hepatobiliary surgeon. I was checked by the specialist and told me that basing on the results there's still fragments left that's why a SPASM occurred during the cholangiogram. He's gonna perform a t tube choledochotomy. As of the moment, I noticed that I lost weight (8 lbs) after my hospitalization, continuously experienced itchiness and bitter after taste during meals. I also felt an on and off tingling sensation just below my operative site. Do I need to ask for second opinion?

Gastroenterology :: Constipated For Almost Two Years

So back in 2013 there was a time when I ate these fiber bars for breakfast everyday for about a week maybe. At the time I didn't know when you increase your fiber intake you need to increase your water intake. So I went maybe 2 weeks without using the bathroom at all. I guess I really didn't notice it because at the time I was dealing with the end of the year at school and family issues. When I finally did notice my mom and I went to see my doctor. She took an X ray of my stomach and just prescribed me miralax. Which for me didn't work. If I took too much I things would be watery but still nothing much would come out. If I took the right amount things would be pencil thin and still not much came out. Ever since then my digestion hasn't been right. Over the years its just gotten worse, i've tried many things on my own. I've tried the liquid magnesium citrate and that used to work well but it does nothing anymore, Fleet enemas do nothing, I've even tried a real enema and that too barely did anything! There were points where I didn't use the bathroom AT ALL for weeks and even months. When I lay flat on my stomach I can feel a huge lump, or when I press on my stomach its painful. Sometimes my stomach gets so bloated and I look like I'm pregnant. Recently I had this extreme sharp pain in my side I couldn't even move, I just curled over and waited for the pain to pass. I'm so afraid to eat, I've even feel like I have to throw up if I eat too much, and I have thrown up a couple times. I went to the doctor again recently and told her the miralax isn't working, I told her about the pain and the throwing up. She did another X ray and told me I was filled with stool and blocked up all around my colon. But all she did was tell me to either take dulcolax or take a square of ex lax followed by a fleet enema for a week! I would think if I'm at the point of throwing up something more would have been done!! (Btw she's a pediatric doctor,  I'm 19 but she said they would keep seeing me till im 21 if I like. I don't know if it's because she's a pediatric doctor is the reason why she's taking these approaches that aren't working.  Maybe she doesn't know what to do?) All she is doing is telling me to take different laxatives but it's not working, and I'm so scared.. I've read people can die from fecal impaction. I've read about people with the same problem as me but they have only been constipated for a month or less and they've been to the ER and had things taken care of! But I've been like this for almost two years so why haven't I! I don't think my doctor is taking this seriously and I'm thinking I should go to a 24 hour clinic and maybe they'll actually do something? Or the ER, but how would I get in? I'm just really scared and I don't want to be like this anymore.

Acute Urinary Retention After Stroke

Friend had stroke end of jan. He's now having serious retention problems. Drs not sure if it is neurological or physical. He's trying to urinate every 10 mins with acute pain. If it's neurological I wouldn't have thought he was trying to void. He's had a urethral catheter in since stroke till a few weeks ago and now got a convince catheter. Problem has got increasingly worse over last few months and last week extremely worse. He's due to go into hospital on Monday if bed available for other treatment. Today though I may insist on him going down to a&e as the pain is now getting much worse. He's even on morphine for other issues and pain goes beyond this. Any thoughts?

Gastroenterology :: Gagging / Clicking In Throat

Hey all! So I seem to be suffering from this weird health issue, that apparently only Dr. House could diagnose. Since I was fifteen I have had this constant problem with my throat, that has just become unbearable. I have a painful grinding/clicking feeling in my throat, coughing/gagging fits so bad that I have thrown up because of how hard my throat tightness, difficulty swallowing saliva, and these horrible periods where have shortness of breath and it feels like I am suffocating, as well a general feeling that I need to clear my throat. The breathing problem is especially bad in the morning, shortly after I wake up. I pushed my parents to take me to ever specialists you could imagine to try and find some diagnosis, but no one could ever come up with anything. I've had endoscopies and everything looked normal. I was told that it was just anxiety, but there is no way that the pain I feel in my throat is caused my anxiety.

Acute Pancreatitis :: How Long Does It Take To Recover?

I was wondering how long it takes to recover from acute pancreatitis? It started when I was at work just over 3wks ago, I got the most excruciating pain in the upper left side of my abdomen, going into my back (the exact same pain I used to encounter when I had gallstones nearly 10 years ago, but I knew it couldn't be that, as I had my gallbladder removed.) my colleague took me to the walk in centre, where I had bloods taken and given buscopan tablets and sent home. Later that night the walk in centre rang to tell me I had pancreatitis, and that I should see my GP in the morning. I went to see my GP, she was puzzled why I hadn't already been admitted to hospital, she then arranged for me to go straight on to a ward. I was kept in for 4 days, nil by mouth on a drip, on lots of painkillers and I was given a X-ray and ultrasound scan. I was discharged and was sent home to rest, they said I would need to go back as a outpatient for a MRI, a camera test and a mrcp test. I got a sick note from my GP for 2wks, so thought I'd be ok by now? I was due to return to work yesterday, but still don't feel well, so my doctor has given me another note for 2wks. I still haven't heard from the hospital re tests, I just wondered is it normal to still be in some pain, I am also very tired? I know I shouldn't worry but I am worried about returning to work, my boss and her boss are coming to my house on Friday to discuss my attendance as it is procedure, it really is making me very anxious, I just want to get better.
