Statins :: Atorvastatin - Constant Tiredness And Body Aches

I found this site by accident & on reading other views realise I have made a big mistake! I have been taking Atorvastatin 40mg as well as other heart drugs, for many years now. A chance remark to a nurse about my constant tiredness & she said it was the statins. I stopped taking them 3 months ago without saying anything to my GP (I continued to order them as usual) I felt human at last and a lot of my aches & pains also disappeared.

I am very susceptible to kidney stones having been born with a medullary sponge kidney, but have n't had any trouble for years. A routine scan in October 2010 showed no stones. An emergency scan 3 days ago revealed numerous stones - too many to count - plus a drastic rise in my cholesterol levels. Caused by not taking my statins!

Talk to your GP before stopping any drugs- in some cases the bad side effects are worth it and the drugs can prevent even more serious problems.

Statins / Lipid Lowering :: Lipitor And Body Itch

all over my body started to itch like crazy. Worst if I take a little alcohol. I stopped taking it for about 2 weeks but it still is terribly itch on my hands, arms legs body and buttocks. I keep on scratching but no relief. I took some allergy meds (benadryl, claritin, prednisone 20 mg) it helped some but not much. What can I do to stop the itch. I took that because I have high cholesterol but not too overly high

On bad days my total cholesterol is 144

Triglyceride 223 > I eat a lot after Christmas (I can get like 120-140 sometimes)

HDL  35 > after Christmas (I can get 52-63)

LDL 64 >

What can I do to make the itch go away. There are no blisters or anything. I am quite active, going to gym about 5 days a week for 2 hrs each. slim profile. 64kg on a 168 height. mid 40s. advise?

Repeated Discectomy And Laminectomy And TLIF Fusion Of L5/S1

Back in 2012 after 2 years of severe sciatica that was treated with painkillers, I finally got an MRI which showed disc herniation at L5/S1, I had a microdiscectomy & the surgeon said it was a difficult procedure as the disc had calcified. I did however have some relief & a huge reduction in pain.

After about a year the pain had increased to the point my mobility was affected & I was referred back to my neuro, he carried out MRI & another micro discectomy & unfortunately this actually left me immediately in more pain.

So I had another MRI which showed again more herniated disc trapping my nerves, this was only 6 weeks after my 2nd op, my surgeon said he could do no more for me but he then referred me onto a colleague for a TLIF fusion of L5/S1.

Which was done, but again no significant improvements so after 12 weeks my neuro sent me for more MRI & CT scans, this showed halo's around my fusion screws, crowding at L5/s1 & a post op collection around the incision site, he prescribed 6 weeks antibiotic course & re-did the scans.

There was no change to the collection & he then decided he would need to operate again in case of infection.

When he operated he found no infection inside but there was 'bugs' in the fluid collection in my back.

He said the fluid was seroma & he was confused as seroma fluid never has bugs in it?

Whilst he was in my back he did yet another discectomy & laminectomy, he said he did not check the fusion itself as it meant disturbing scar tissue.

At this point he said nothing more can be done for me.

This is heartbreaking to me, I'm 39 yrs old, I have a physical job as an electrician & I don't want to be sat about or lose my job.

My pain is still extreme in my right leg & hip, my buttock still feel numb & my calf feels tight & achy.

My last op was only a week ago but after 4 surgeries on one small place, I still feel in excruciating pain & it feels like there is no light at the end of the tunnel, my back around the incision site is still swollen like it was before this surgery & I'm worried the fluid is coming back, the build up of that fluid had caused problems on my left side & had not got any smaller in the 5 months between the surgeries.

Repeated Hernias - Femoral And Inguinal After Spigelian Hernia Repair?

18 months ago I had a spigelian hernia repair. Everything seemed to go well until the following April when I was in a lot of pain around the site of the op. I subsequently found that I had 2 more hernias, a femoral hernia and an inguinal hernia. Both were repaired at the same time last August. It transpired that the mesh had come away from my 1st repair and wrapped itself round my inguinal hernia but this wasn't discovered until the actual repair was carried out.

Now I have similar pain and another hernia. My GP says that it is an incisional hernia and it is at the end of the scar from the last repair! I'm scared that the pain will become as bad as it was last year and worried for my job as I always seem to be off recovering from surgery.

How am I getting so many hernias? My consultant implies that it is because I smoke but surely that can't be the only cause!

HIV :: Body Ache, Night Sweats, Hot Flashes Throughout The Body

I am 31 years old and had a vaginal sex with a girl of unknown HIV status using two condoms at a time. It was my first sexual encounter. I ejaculated twice and both times I used double condoms as I changed after first ejaculation. Both times the condoms seemed to be intact and I could see my semen inside the condom. It's almost over 28 days now and since the past couple of days I have developed almost all symptoms like pain in the back (I have a history of L3 compression and pelvic hairline fracture in 2007), cough with something in throat, body ache, night sweats, hot flashes throughout the body, had stiffness and pain in the back of neck, not visible swollen lymph nodes , had two time kind of diarrhea today.

Since the day after this exposure I was panic stricken with stress and anxiety and cannot sleep at all with insomnia like features and wake up at 2 or 3 or 4 am in the morning due to all sorts of weird thoughts.

Risk Of Herpes :: Erotic Body-to-body Massage

I know this question may have been asked before but I'm really stressed out and i need some reassurance. Yesterday I had an erotic massage that involved body to body. She applied some oil to her body and mine and sat in my lap with sine grinding for a minute or so. Her vagina touched my lower shaft and scrotum and it only lasted about a minute or so but there was no penetration. She was 35 and seemed healthy without any visible herpes symptoms. I know there is a risk of contracting herpes in this fashion but how high is this risk? I am terrified and not sure what to do.

STDs Risk :: Body-to-body Massage?

Like many others here, I am in rather deep despair. Although I have a girlfriend, I went to a body-to-body massage parlour. The masseuse rubbed her body over my body, using also her vagina (along my legs, etc.). I fingered her, mostly on the outside, but also briefly on the inside. Although our genitals did not touch (except perhaps incidentally very very briefly), I am very concerned about STDs. What are the risks? How long should I wait before having sex with my girlfriend? There was no oral, no visible sores, often a few seconds of digital penetration, but she certainly touched my penis after having been in contact with my finger that was inside of her (not immediately).

I would be very grateful for any advice/words from experience with this sort of thing. Has anyone here received an STD in this way?

Statins :: Depression And Lethargy

I had a TIA back in February which was terrifying.

I have been prescribed 20 mg Simvastatin daily but feel dreadful.

I am also taking an SSRI drug for anxiety & am currently unemployed so is this just depression due to circumstances or the drug?

I have been taking the statin for just over two months and am becoming increasingly lethargic, aching all over, headaches and a feeling of just wanting to go to sleep for ever..almost like I have not the energy to care anymore which is an irony as faced with the prospect of dying 2 months ago I was terrified now I don't care. My cholesterol was 5.9 which is not exactly high but in the circumstance I was advised to get it lower with meds. Is anyone else in a similar position?

Refusing Statins Due To Pains And Nausea

Though I suffer from many complications from liver disease, including diabetes2 (insulin) , my cholesterol is 5.6, with 4.0 and under being the preferred target, by doctors, in diabetics. Few years ago I was prescribed 20mg simvastatin, as the doctor said to me "they are the best thing since sliced bread" !

As I was frightened of the effect of this variety (heard horror stories) I asked for pravastatin instead, I was one them a week, when due to stomach pain etc,  I stopped, never was concerned by what my doctor advised...I'd had enough of feeling bad. Nobody has the right to pressurise/frighten you into taking any drug, ultimately the choice is yours. Medics make mistakes!

now that I have diabetes, my diabetic nurse has asked me to try them again, I done this and still got pains and nausea.

she asked my liver specialist at hospital for advice, even he said it would be good to try a smaller dose.  I have great respect for my liver specialist and tried (other day)  new prescription for 10mg simvastatin, on second day, I got the stomach pains back, worse than before and instead of shoulder pains from them I past. I had bad aching all down my right leg, yes, I have stopped them again already.

I to, like others here, have spent days and hours studying all the evidence on statins, which amounts to real bad news, am now terrified of what long term, let alone short term damage they are capable of! I can't fathom why our doctors keep pushing these dangerous drugs on us, as I cannot believe they could PREVENT heart trouble. As one of the posts here says...your going to die one way or another, so why risk getting there sooner and in pain or great

discomfort.

Not enough medical research has gone into the effects, benefit or otherwise of statins.  I feel sure doctors, especially for diabetics, create alarm for patients in for what is normal, good cholesterol, even with slightly raised readings, each patient's reading cannot be the standard ideal, with so many different factors, ie other medication one has to take that maybe conflicts, we cannot modify as in diet, so there answer seems to be force the numbers down by these badly researched drugs.

Because the nature of my particular situation, I doubt this post will be of any help, but it is another's view of this over prescribed disaster.

High Cholestrol :: Are Statins THAT Dangerous?

I'm a 18 year old female, currently taking 20 mg of atorvastatin every day due to familial hypercholesterolemia. I have tried to control my LDL doing only diet, but it didn't help much, the reason why my doc prescribed me the pills.

I've been taking the medication for three or four months now and I didn't notice any side effects.

However, seeing people complaining about side effects on the internet, especially pain or muscle damage is making me seriously consider stop taking them. Nobody here has any good or tolerable experience with statins to share?

Cholesterol Level :: Familial Hypercholesterolaemia And Statins

I have been diagnosed with Familial Hypercholesterolaemia at the age of 5, after around 30 years of battling with doctors over my diet.  Up until now, my combined cholesterol has never gone below 7.0 (without statins which I took for a few months around 5 years ago - it went down to around 4.0), and doctors continually insisted that my diet was at fault.

After another round of insisting that I take statins, I refused and was sent to the lipid clinic, where they looked at my history and proudly announced that my diet was not at fault and it was hereditary.

They then insisted I go on statins, as in their words, I have nearly 50 years worth of <fat> lining my blood vessels.

They did no cardiac tests or ultrasounds or stethoscope on my neck, etc., to find out if I was "furred up", and they then referred me back to the GP.

The GP didn't get in touch with me, so I made an appointment to see him, where he put me on a low dose of steroid.

I asked him about whether I should find out if I WAS at risk of heart disease before he shoved me on them, as in my mind, if my cholesterol had been so high ALL my life, then why did I not have any of the associated symptoms of FH, such as early heart disease, fat deposits on eyes etc?

Also I have reduced thyroid function (not reduced enough to be treated under the current guidelines however).

So, a couple of weeks later, at a pre-op for an upcoming gynae procedure I am to have, I mentioned about not having my heart looked at in years, and the kind nurse did an ECG and listened to my heart with a stethoscope.  I was told my heart was ok.

What I would like to know is, would that "OK" on my heart health be a good reason not to take statins, or would further tests need to be done to ascertain whether I am at increased risk of heart disease - other than my cholesterol level.

I have read recently that if your heart and vascular health is OK, it doesn't matter what your cholesterol level is, it will still lower your risk - is that correct?
