I have a 2001 Elantra GLS. After reading info on the forums it sounds like my crunching/clunking noise when I go over bumps would most likely be the upper control arm. Is this the only control arm?
View 6 RepliesWhat I have happening is clunking that can be felt in the pedals and dead pedal at random time. Bad vibration can be felt through the cabin but this is hard to quantify since I already had VF mounts, I'm lowered on PSS9's, have camber plates, etc etc. It just seems to me that the vibration has gotten worse than the "normal" vibration these mods would introduce. Whirring/rotational noise that comes and goes and seems to be right in front of the the driver's seat. It also sometimes seems to go away if I am cruising down the road and I push the clutch in.
Crunching noise (almost like a CV joint which is shot) but this noise appears randomly at various speeds and when driving straight. All of this is pointing me more and more towards a tranny problem which is not what I want to hear but I also don't want to keep driving my car without knowing what is wrong with it. One note is I did install the trans shim, replaced black cap on end of trans in Feb and didn't notice anything out of the ordinary at that time
I have pulled the driver's axle 3 times in the last month and can find nothing wrong with it. I have pulled the suspension apart on the entire front end and found/see nothing. I have pulled, twisted, shaken, etc everything looking for bad or worn parts/bushings and can find nothing.
2012 truck, started making a noise today. I cannot tell what it is, but seems to be coming from the passenger front suspension, its a crunching/light clunking sound, happens when going over bumps, when the truck pitches one way or the other turning, and coming to a stop....
Truck has 6k miles, I did a quick visual inspection this afternoon, didn't notice much, but the sway bar endlink looked a bit odd though, not sure if normal, its gota little bend too it and seems to just contact the vac line mounted behind it, seemed unusual...
Maybe its its just one of the crappy rancho branded shocks is junk?
Clunk in the front end when going over speed bumps? That is the only time I ever get it, never on bumpy roads or anything like that just at speed bumps. It seems to be louder on the drivers side but I am pretty sure its on both sides. I never noticed it until a couple speed bumps were installed along my normal route, but that could be because maybe I never drove over them previously?
View 3 RepliesI'm in the process of changing the wheel bearing and took the brakes, disconnected the sway bar, and other large bolt but can't get the upper control arm disconnected because once the nut gets to a certain point, the ball joint starts spinning with it. Tried holding the bolt at the bottom with vice grips and it still turns. I'm thinking I might have to take off the whole A arm if I can't get this nut off.
View 1 Replies2001 F-150 4x4 5.4L. I am going to replace the upper control arms this weekend. I noticed that there are regular bolts with no cam washer installed. I have read conflicting info on whether the cam washer set up is needed. Do I have to install these or can I just put the old bolts back in just like they are. When I replaced the uppers on my 1997 T-Bird I put in new bolts but there was no mention of a cam washer setup for it anywhere that I saw. What would be the problems if I just reinstalled the old bolts. Right now the truck drives straight as an arrow but the lower ball joint on the driver side is shot so I will be replacing it also.

While I was going down slowly, I heard my right front making noises. It sounded something like crunching or cracking noise coming from the suspension maybe? I also noticing this when I go over uneven bumps, I am here the same noise as well.
Is this normal? I got about 35K on my car now.
Problem on early 2001 Sport Trac 4X4. I don't have the whining but a clunk when I go over bumps. I jacked up the left side and I can pull the rear wheel in and out maybe a 1/32 and I hear the clunk so I'm sure the loose rear end is the problem. How do I go about fixing it? New/used rear end? Mine is a 2001 (drum rear brakes)...
View 3 RepliesI am losing my mind over this. I bought a 2013 c63 in May and the last few months it has been making this clunking noise. I have taken it to the dealership 3 times so far and each time the noise goes away for about a week only to return worse than it was. It used to only make noises when I turned right on incline changes at low speeds. Now it makes the noise going over any bump at any speed.
The first time I took it in they replaced the front left strut. The second time they replaced the front right strut. The third time they replaced the lower control arm.
I am posting 2 videos of the noise. This video is between the first and second visits and the noise can be heard around the 24 second mark.

For the past year I've had the front end squeaks and crunching from my 06 Sonata LX with 97k miles. It started with just going over bumps, then progressed to basically any movement of the body up and down. It's worse in the cold, but an issue all year.
I just did shocks and struts all around, with the mounts. Didn't affect the sounds at all. At 97k, the original shocks/struts were woefully dead. At least the car rides 10x better now.
Yesterday I changed out the sway bar end links with Moog K80949's. It does sound like some of the "crunching" is gone, and now we're back to just squeaking. I think even some of the constant squeaking over fairly normal roads is gone.
So, what's up next? The FSM suggest the lower control arm, which I'd prefer not to do. Sway bar bushings could be an option, but they looked kind of like a PITA to get to.
Have a 2011 SE with just over 21k miles on it.
Problem #1: When ever I go over bumps, go down my drive way, I hear this rather loud noise coming from either the roof or right rear. It sounds like someone is hitting metal with a hammer.
It happens when I'm turning the wheel or just driving straight.
Problem #2: Also when I am going over a speed bump, when the rear of the car goes over it, the suspension gets squeaky. Speeds are about 2-3 mph~
Unfortunately, it is no longer under factory warranty so taking it to the dealer is my last option.
I got a few questions. First one is how hard would it be to swap the auto trans out for a manual and what would I need. Secondly, have some weird boost issue, boost gauge use to read 5 psi with front mount now its at 2 psi and their are no leaks in the IC system.. can't figure out what it is (turbo only has 3k miles on it) final question what causes a clunking noise every time i go over bumps and curbs?

There is a clunking noise coming from the rear of the car. Not a metal on metal sound. Sounds like its more on the passengers side. I replaced the swaybar linkage ends since they were a little loose and thought it was that. Nope...I have H&R coilovers, they are about 5 years old. Can't imagine they be shot this soon. Had someone drive my car while i was behind the R and the rear wheels aren't dancing at all, a common sign of a blown shock. Push down on the car, shocks still respond like they did from day one. I've put the car up on a lift, both sitting and wheels dangling. With the wheels dangling, I grabbed onto the shocks to see if there was any play in the upper shock mounts, solid. Looked under the whole car for loose plastic covers. Can not see anything loose. I made sure everything inside the hatch, including the battery is sitting snug.
The clunk happens over bumps, with or without the brakes on and is loud enough that if the radio is on, it can still be heard.
So I was driving home from work today and picked my daughter up from the sitters. When I got back in the car I noticed a "clunking" noise when I would hit small bumps. Trying to figure it out, I also noticed this occur when driving straight and moving the steering wheel back and forth.
The car is a 2012 SE v6 with about 26k on it.
I did install eibach springs about a month ago, but have not had any issues until now. I took both front wheels off and checked anything I would have changed when installing the slings and everything seems okay.
I am experiencing a bad clunking noise when going over bumps. Its comming from the passenger rear and I am assuming the springs collapsed. How can i tell for sure? The car is sitting a little lower on the corner. Is it bad to drive the car with the spring in this condition?
View 8 RepliesSo about a month ago my 2013 Sonata GLS started to make some clunking noise going over the littlest bumps over the road from the front end on both right and left side.
I brought it to one mechanic and they said the rack and pinion needs replacing which is an expensive fix. I couldn't believe that was the problem as I had no leaks and it was on their solid. I ended up taking it to my uncles mechanic and he stated its the stabilizer links on the front right and front left wheels. My way to work has a lot of bad pot holes... so I'm hoping that the stabilizers are actually the problem.
Anyways, tomorrow I will be bringing it to the mechanic to have them both changed. I know a lot have been complaining about this issue and instead of replacing the rack and pinion, I thought I'd try and see if it actually is the stabilizer links and provide a fix for some of the sonata owners on here.
I've got a '94 Mazda miata which is in good shape, with among other things a fair number of suspension upgrades. It drives really well, other than the clunk. On the occasional bump it clunks as if something is loose on the driver's side rear. I've checked the shocks, springs, jacked it up and inspected everything I can think of. I'm looking for wisdom from your decades of experience (in your terms wasted time) on what it might be.
View 3 RepliesI need to replace the rubber axle bumper guards. I have a clunking noise from the left front going over bumps. Troubleshooting I found the left front axle bumper guard is missing, right side is missing chunks and dry rotted. I had a question about how they attach. The one that is missing looks like a rusted bolt snapped off. Is it safe to assume a bolt goes right thru the center of the bumper guard into the frame? Couldn't tell on the right side it is in bad shape. Right front bolt may have sheared off on the bottom and just held in on the top by what is left.
