I have a 1997 explorer awd 4.0 sohc. have a problem when driving at 25 mph it makes a very loud clunk in drive train and will still make noise all the way to 60 mph. have pulled front drive line and rear drive line and drove and noise is still there I am guessing that its in the transfer case. I have also changed the gem module and had the drive lines checked for problems.

When you start the truck and start driving... its making a Loud clunking noise from under the car... at first we thought it was the gear box but then after replacing with a reconditioned gearbox and transfer case it was still there... it is doing this in auto mode and in 4x4 mode... during city driving it does it all the time .... but when you drive it to 100km/h the clunking completely stops.... and then you can bring the car to a complete halt (without turning the engine off) and start driving again and the clunking is still gone... BUT as soon as you turn the engine off and on again (even if only for a minute) the clunking returns again until you drive to 100km/h and then it stops again.
View 2 RepliesI have a '97 Ranger with about 120k, 5 spd manual transmission, 2wd. For the last 2-3 months I'm hearing and feeling a clunking or rattling noise (I can't decide which it is) coming from the rear of the vehicle at random times.
I can't really predict or find a pattern of when the noise will happen, but it seems like it is most likely to happen when I'm either accelerating up a hill or when I'm braking relatively hard. It happens whether the clutch is in or out. Doesn't seem to matter. It does NOT happen when idling, only when traveling. I don't ever remember it happening at highway speed (65mph).
If I have my hand on the stick shift I can feel the shaking / rattling as it happens. There seems to be no impact on the performance of the vehicle - no additional trouble shifting into or out of gear, accelerating, or anything else.
On a recent trip I towed a 1,000 lb trailer and I did not feel or hear the noise at all during that trip (about an hour each way). Any guess as to whats going on?
For the last couple of weeks I've had a clunking sound coming from the right rear end of my 1997 Lumina when I drive over bumps. Took it to a garage the other day and discovered that the area around the right rear shock (strut?) mount is severely rusted. I assume that other probably causes were checked, but the mechanic was suggesting that this was the reason for the noises I've been hearing. From what I saw, and what the mechanic said, the shock mount is integrated into the wheel well of the vehicle. There's little good metal left in order to support the shock and coil spring, so obviously this situation needs to be addressed, but can this really be the source of the noise? His idea of a fix was that I would have to find a donor car with good metal and use that to replace the rusted wheel well on mine. Not something that his shop can do, but I'm sure there are others in my area that can.

I bought a Schoshe wiring kit and wired it up according the instructions. I have power. There are lights and everything but no sound. No static. Nothing.
There are posts about the amp...not sure if i have one. Mine is the 97 explorer that had the 6cd changer in the console.
There is a blue wire left over and the orange one. (Orange is for illumination so I assume I don't need this.)
My 1997 ford explorer has this problem that when you start the engine it runs fine then it's makes a choking sound in the throttle body area I have a video of it on YouTube here's the link :

Problem on early 2001 Sport Trac 4X4. I don't have the whining but a clunk when I go over bumps. I jacked up the left side and I can pull the rear wheel in and out maybe a 1/32 and I hear the clunk so I'm sure the loose rear end is the problem. How do I go about fixing it? New/used rear end? Mine is a 2001 (drum rear brakes)...
View 3 RepliesFor the last few weeks, when I make a turn (particularly a sharp turn in either direction) I get a "clunking" noise that sounds like it is coming from the front end somewhere. I can also feel it - almost like a gear slipping and engaging again. I am not in 4WD mode when this is happening. It NEVER happens unless I am turning a corner. View 2 RepliesAlright so a friend of mine has a Ford Explore with the little switch on the dash for auto 4 wheel, high 4 wheel, and low 4 wheel. When it is in Auto it has no issues drives fine and good. As soon as you turn it to 4 wheels high and start to go all you get is a loud clunking noise constantly. Another friend had a similair issue with an AWD explorer that we just pulled the front drive shaft and it seemed to solve the issue. How would I test the driveshaft to see if that's the issue.

My 2002 Ranger XLT Supercab Edge makes a clunking sound, but not every time, when I start going from a stopped position. It's coming from underneath right behind the cab. The Ford dealership could find nothing wrong. What this could be?

Also have had 7 window regulators to go bad on have 1 working window 4 bad now replaced the same one 3 times. Called Ford they said no complaints have come in about the window issue on 2004 trucks...
View 1 RepliesWas having some clunking sounds coming from the rear end on the old F150. Bro in law said it was lack of gear lube and the rear diff grinding from the start. Wasn't the issue. U - joints are shot and causing the issue. My question is I marked the drive shashshaft and flange with a sharpie but it rubbed off on the flange from free spinning the rear end seeing if the issue was there. From the drive shashshaft to the rear diff flange does the flange need to be marked or no? I did scribe with a nail the transfer case and marked the drive shaft with sharpie. So is the flange being marked important or just the bracket with the u-joint? Would've used soap stone but don't have any on hand.

I've had the car in to my mechanic twice in the last 30 days for this issue. He took the wheels off, repacked the brakes on one side, but hasn't found the problem. During the test drives the car did not reproduce the noise.
Lately, I've noticed that when I really hear the clunking noise is after I've made a sharp turn, like when driving slowly in a parking lot, and have returned the steering to a straight position. We didn't make any sharp turns during the test drives.
When accelerating from a stop, I get a clunking sound from the front end. I took some pics of the sway bar and I think it maybe loose. There is a gap between the bolt between the bar. Is this normal, or can I tighten it with the X on the ground or does it have to be up on a lift to properly tighten?
View 14 RepliesRecently when I leave my driveway which only has a slight grade to it my truck makes a clunking sound when I hit the gutter and while turning slightly. Also my front drive line from transfer case to front axle has some play in it. I can rotate the front drive line about 3/4" to an 1" while parked in the driveway. Changing u joints. I figured this would be a good starting point. 2005 XLT 4x4 5.4L F150.

The noise seems to be coming from the rear heater core or the rear a/c evaporator. I thought it was the rear blower motor, but noise is still there even when blower motor is disconnected.
View 1 RepliesWhen I turn over bumps not on corners I hear nothing lol ..I just changed the tie rods for other reasons and nothing is loose in the front end now..But this sound is from the box of the truck like something is in the box bumping around when turning corners over bumps..Its frustrating and I cant find out what it is..Only happens when turning over bumps ?
View 6 RepliesI have a 1998 Ford Ranger, 3.0 4X4. Purchased in early 2002 with a clunking problem which has not gotten worse or better. When I take off it is a heavy double 'clunking' like something shifting and the settling. I have had 4 mechanics look at it, have changed the front u joint and have had the motor and transmission mounts checked but the mounts are OK. Can't figure this out. I talked to a person at a local car parts store and he mentioned that it could involve the 'yoke' and that it just might need to be greased but he was just guessing.

Its especially bad if I drive over cobblestone or on a dirt road. Could this be the CV joint? Ball Joint? How can I tell what it is?
