Ford - Explorer :: 1999 - Front Hub Getting Sloppy And Noisy?

Apr 11, 2014

I drive a 1999 Explorer XLT AWD with the 5.0. Here lately the front end has started getting sloppy and noisy. When driving slowly in town it makes a clunking sound on the front passenger hub area any time I hit a bump. It cleans up a little at highway speed. Does this sound a bearing issue, an AWD issue, or a CV issue? Also, if it is a bearing issue can I rebuild my own hubs or will I have to by an assembly?

Ford Super Duty (1999-2016) :: New Gear Box And Front End But Still Sloppy At The Wheel

I replaced my steering gearbox with a remanufactured oem gearbox (no, not the redhead. I wish I'd had the extra money but I didn't.) I replaced the factory sway bar (1.25" diameter) with the Excursion sway bar that came on my axle (1.4" diameter) along with polyurethane bushings and greaseable end links. I replaced wheel bearings, ball joints, track bar bushings, tierods (ends, sleeves, the whole nine yards). Literally everything from the gearbox down, besides the pitman arm, is brand new.

The next day I took it in and got it aligned at Goodyear. The steering is noticeably more responsive, but I still have 1-2" of play either way before I get a response. I'm skeptical about tightening the gearbox. I did that on the old one and it improved steering for a couple years, but this new one shouldn't require any tightening.

I have yet to install new steering stabilizers, but I can recognize bump steer versus this problem on a straight, smooth road. I'm sure the stabilizers won't change the 2 inches of play.

Ford - Explorer :: 1999 V6 Noisy And Idle Will Decrease After It Warms Up

Since we bought this car, it has had an issue where, after it warms up, it begins making a noise which I've seen described as "moosing" on the internet. In addition to the sound, the idle will decrease and will sometimes kill the engine.

I've seen this attributed to the IAC, and so I replaced it (twice). I have tested the IAC connections as well, and all is good. I have even run the car without the IAC plugged in, to try to reset the computer, to no avail. I feel like I have eliminated the IAC from being the problem (but maybe not.)

I have replaced the PCV valve.

I have replaced the water temp sensor and the thermostat (someone suggested this might affect the computer and rpms...)

I have cleaned the MAF and tested it per the Chilton's manual. (tested fine)

I suspect that because of the idle and the engine seeming to be choking out when it dies, that there is a vacuum issue somewhere. I just don't know where to start with this.

Ford Super Duty (1999-2016) :: 2000 F250 - Sloppy Steering And Noise In Front End When Going Over Bumps

My 2000 f250 7.3 has pretty sloppy steering and noise in the front end when going over bumps. I have replace the drop links, swap bar bushings, both wheel hubs including new seals and the drag link. The rest of the front end seems to be in good shape. I put it up on jack stands and there is some movement in the front end but it seems to all be in the steering box.

Steering box appears to be original with 220k miles. I went to tighten it and it appears the PO did it at least once already. Is it safe to try tightening it again? Does tightening it increase the risk of failure? I'd like to try tightening it first but not at the risk of losing steering at 65mph with my kids in the truck.

Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: Sloppy Front Wheel Bearings

In 30 years of wrenching on cars, I've never encountered this problem. Replaced the pads and left rotor. Rotor is typical Chinese rotor. While there, replaced the wheel bearings. Also knocked out the races (with a brass drift) and replaced the races with the ones that came with the new wheel bearings. The bearings are NAPA bearings. Packed the wheel bearings just like always.

Applied some grease just like always on the spindle. Put it all back together. Tightened the wheel bearing nut while rotating the rotor in the opposite direction. Went to maybe 10 ft lbs. Backed the nut off, set it firm finger tight. Installed the cotter pin. Got a whole bunch of sloppiness in the wheel bearings. I can feel a LOT of it when rotating from the 6 o clock and 12 o clock position. What did I miss? NEVER had this happen before. 2002 f 150 2wd

Ford Brakes/Suspension :: Steering Very Sloppy / Front End Wobbly At A Low Speed

I have a 2002 ford f350 sd crew cab, i have changed the front and rear brakes, since then the steering has gotten sloppy. I was driving around 30-40mph and making a sweeping right turn and the front end was wobbly at a low speed it is fine and on a left turn it is fine. It feels like it is the drivers side tire that is the problem. I have to change the tie rod that is attached to the pitman arm. I don't want to bring it to a shop.

Dodge - Grandcaravan :: 1999 - Front Suspension Is Noisy

In cold weather, front suspension is very noisy. I've replaced stabilizer bar bushings, stabilizer bar links, control arms (complete with new bushings and ball joints). A few months prior, I replaced struts with Monroe quick struts. Noise appears when I hit a pot hole or go over a speed bump. Not really a creaking, almost like a slapping sound. I've taken a look at motor mounts and they look OK. Now that the weather is warm there's no noise. Rack and pinion were replaced about a year ago so engine cradle was removed. I removed it and reinstalled. Also installed new tie rod ends and lubed the inner tie rod joints.

Ford - Explorer :: Noisy Catalytic Converter - No Codes

4.6L DOHC - My driver's side catalytic converter is making quite a bit of noise during acceleration when the engine is warm. I have no trouble codes, no cel and the truck seems to be running fine in general.

I am exploring repair possibilities. I've talked to two shops - one general repair, one exhaust specialist. Neither gave me any options other than to replace the whole system. That isn't an option. I'm a semi-competent home mechanic and if that's what has to be done I'll just buy the walker system from RA and do it myself.

Golf IV R32 :: Front End Feels Sloppy And Loose

My R is almost at 70k miles and the front end feels sloppy and loose. What is the best option to restore that new car feel or even get it handling better than stock? I already have United Motorsport strut mounts which definitely improved the handling. ECS has some suspension refresh kits (links below), but the question is which one should I go with? Would the Stage 1 kit with OEM replacements be enough? Or should I go with the Stage 3 with Powerflex bushings? I'm always down for upgrading rather than simply replacing. I'm sure that would get it handling real nice, but would definitely create a stiffer ride, right?

Ford - Explorer :: 1999 - Front Wheel Bearing Nut Size?

1999 explorer Eddie bauer. Front wheel bearing nut size? 33mm?

Looking for a torque spec procedure. Need to replace an abs sensor. Sensor alone was 120 bucks so just bought the whole hub assembly with sensor. Might just put the whole thing on.

Is there a good thread for a complete socket size portfolio on the explorers. Thinking sizes over and above normal socket sizes found in your typical socket set?

Ford Excursion :: Noisy Front Leaf Springs?

Been chasing this for a few weeks and getting fed up. Have a bad metal on metal "creaking" noise from the front at low speeds.

Background - Replaced springs with X code front and modded C code rear from Junior at ATS. Also replaced shocks at the same time. All hardware tightened with weight on suspension. Have rechecked torque on ubolts many times, even loosened and retightened both ends of the shackles, sway bar links, shocks, etc.

Can't get the noise to go away. Hard to pinpoint exactly where it's coming from but you can "feel" the noise in the back half of the front springs.

Ford - Explorer :: 1999 XLT - Clunking Noise From Front End On Making A Sharp Turn

For the last few weeks, when I make a turn (particularly a sharp turn in either direction) I get a "clunking" noise that sounds like it is coming from the front end somewhere. I can also feel it - almost like a gear slipping and engaging again. I am not in 4WD mode when this is happening. It NEVER happens unless I am turning a corner. If I drive straight, it's fine. 1999 Explorer XLT (4 door, 4wd model)....

Ford - Taurus :: Rattle / Clunking Sound Coming From Front End When Going Over Bumps / Noisy CV Boot?

'01 Taurus with an occasional rattle/clunking sound coming from the front end when going over bumps. Took it to the local shopping center auto. service dept. (probably 1st mistake I know) They say the only thing they could find was the RH CV boot was bad and was probably the source of the noise. Doesn't sound right to me since the boot is rubber and what I hear is more of a metal sound..what I was thinking possibly a suspension link or tie rod end. I know what a bad cv JOINT sounds like and it's nothing like this. Now if the CV boot is bad I don't mind to replace it, but I don't want to spend the money if it is not going to solve the problem. I've never heard of a boot making noise before.

Passat (B6) :: Front End Seems Noisy

First off it's NOT the strut mounts or bearings. I just wasted a bunch of money installing new ones. Hard to tell if the noise is only on the driverside, but its not just at low speeds. Kind of a clunking during up/down movement.

Accent MC (2006-11) :: Noisy Front Hub Bearings

2009 accent sedan has had an issue with noisy front hub bearings? I had my Accent in for an alignment today and also had the shop check for a humming noise that seemed to be coming from the front end. The humming varied with speed. The technician said it was a noisy hub bearing. He said that the bearings were both tight and had no play in them. I was told just to monitor the noise, as the bearings were tight. Just had the transmission fluid changed too. (Used genuine Hyundai fluid) The noise doesn't seem to be transmission related, as the transmission shifts perfectly with no noise. Also, the level of the noise changes on turning the wheel in either direction.

Ford - Explorer :: 2001 - Front Wheels Seem To Stay Engaged With Front Differential

We have an 01 Sport Trac as a backup vehicle and it has the 3 position rotary switch on the dash for 4wd.

The transfer case engages and disengages but the front wheels seem to stay engaged with the front differential.

There are no manual hubs and I really don't think it should ALWAYS be engaged like that.

What is the probable issue and ALSO can manual hubs be installed on this truck?

Someone mentioned vacuum engagement? but I didn't see any vacuum hoses near the spindles. Didn't see any wires either other than ABS...

Prius (Gen 2) :: 2008 - Noisy Front Wiper Linkage?

I have a 2008 Gen II with an increasingly noisy front wiper linkage. It squeaks rather loudly. I know the noise is not the wiper blades on the glass because I've lifted the wiper blades, turned on the wipers, and get exactly the same noise. Any way to lubricate the linkage?

Prius (2004-09) :: Front Windshield Wipers Noisy

Wife said the front windshield wipers were noisy, after a bothersome back-and-forth, she finally indicated they were "chattering." Hindsight, it would have been better for me to just drive it and see for myself.

Anyway, bought new blades (not just the refills) and installed them last night. Learning from my mistakes, I drove the car operated the wipers and now there is a horrible squeak. BUT:

It seems as if it is coming from the area of the actual wiper assembly and not from the wiper -- you know from underneath the black plastic cap that covers the end of the passenger side wiper -- pix below.

Anyway, before I get into to this....I assume I can pry off the black plastic cap, but is there any "user serviceable parts" under there that might be causing this noise?

Accent MC (2006-11) :: Noisy Front Brake Calipers

Since I have this car i noticed that the brake calipers (especially the front) are very noisy. This problem is caused by caliper's floating guides that become loose and the entire brake caliper shakes. I asked at a kia mechanic who answered to me to change the calipers support. For my trusted mechanic is useless because, according to him, this type of support have this problem (he tell me that also others car have this problem like older nissan micra) and sooner or later would return noisy.

Some time ago with greasing the floating guides i temporary solved but drying up over time the problem come back.

GTI 337/20th Anniversary :: Front End Noisy - Brake Pads Rattling

Having trouble with front brake pads rattling? About a month ago, I replaced pads - rotors - caliper pins on my 20th GLI. I know these cars ride a bit stiff but it sounds like my front end is about to fall off. All brake parts were torqued to spec - I've gone through all T25/T30 torx front end screws etc and I just can't find the rattle??? This has only started within the last few days. Any other places to check for obvious loose bolts etc?
