Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: 1999 - Coolant Leak Behind Engine?

Nov 16, 2014

My truck is leaking behind the engine. There is not any coolant on top of the engine. It's leaking above the transmission and running down the passage sides. Are there any hoses that could be leaking behind. Sometimes it leaks a lot other times it doesn't leak at all. The shop thinks it's a freeze plug but wouldn't it be leaking more if it was?

Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: Coolant Leak At Rear Of Engine On Passenger Side Below AC Housing

I have a 1990 F-150 w/351 that I knew had a coolant leak at the back of the engine when I bought. It's a tinker around truck, something for me to play with.

I've traced the leak back to a metal tube/pipe that sticks out of the engine compartment just below the AC housing. I cannot find anything in the Haynes manual or a diagram on the intertron that shows what this is and if it should have a hose on it or...?

Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: Coolant Leak At Manifold

My 2003 f150 4x4 w/5.4 has 220k miles and only minor issues until a few days ago. I now have a coolant leak at the mating surface (both sides left and right) of the aluminum crossover coolant manifold (holds thermostat on one end). I have most of the bolts out to remove the crossover manifold but there is one bolt on the RH side that comes from the underside. All things equal, main question is... Can that crossover mainfold be removed independently from the intake? My thought is that in order to get to that last single bolt (there may be others I am not aware of yet) that I will need to remove the intake.

Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: Leak Where The Coolant Leaves The Head

I have a 2001 F-150 5.4 engine. There is a coolant leak where the coolant leaves the head. Looks like a new gasket is in order. The part that needs to come off crosses over to the driver's side and the thermostat mounts into it. To remove this part and replace the gasket, it appears that most of the top of the engine, throtle body, fuel rails, intake, etc., will have to come off. One of the four bolts holding the part on is installed with the bolt head facing down. The only way I see to get this out is to take everything apart.

Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: 1998 - Coolant Leak On Top Motor

1998 F150 4x4 4.2 ... Small leak spraying out of a steel pipe onto the front of the motor. This isn't my truck so I'm not very familiar with it but looks like there is a pipe that come from the water pump threw a bracket and y's and one end has a hose going to heater core n the other part is where the leak is I think it has a hose connected to it that goes to the intake. Only leaks when thermostat open. I'm going to take it apart tonight n see what I find. Iv looked for a replacement part and found nothing so I am going to try n replace the steel pipe with hose.

Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: Coolant Leak On The Upper Intake?

I have a 1998 Ford f150 4.6 2x4 i have a coolant leak on the upper intake. It comes out on the back left of the intake through a metal pipe. Well where the metal pipe is (pressed in) to the intake. Now i talk to the guy at ford dealership in the parts he said it is called the (heater pipe). He also told me that the part is 21 dollars but I have to press it in and if that does stop the leak he said I would have to buy a new intake. Now here is the problem I can not find any info regarding this heater pipe. I don't know how to remove it properly, why it is leaking. I can't find it in the handbooks that i have read so far.

Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: Coolant Leak From Bell Housing?

Only when running heat or defrost, coolant leak looks like it's coming out of the bell housing. I have a supercharger so very difficult to see behind motor, but with inspection camera, heater hose lines look dry. firewall looks dry. No coolant in cab. No steam on windows or smell. Pretty sure not casting/ freeze plugs because absolutely no leaking with heat off. Can run for days with no loss, then turn on heat and within minutes/ seconds coolant puddling in driveway. Is the hose that runs through valley pressurized only when heat is on? I saw a few older threads but as far as I could tell none specified heat on/ heat off conditions. Just started problem after doing some other work, hoses were off radiator and intercooler, replaced radiator. None of those connections are the culprit.

Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: 2001 - Coolant Smell - Can't Find Leak?

I have an 01 supercab. 5.4 Triton 135k. I have begun to smell coolant the last couple of days. Have seen nothing leaking and truck doesn't run hot.

Will investigate more this weekend. Where to start looking for this. It has to be leaking somewhere. Windows don't fog and the smell is there all the time. I live in florida so don't use much heat.

Not the heater core. Heat works fine and no smell from the vents.

Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: 2000 - Coolant Leak On Right Side Of Cross Over Pipe

I have a leak on the right side of the cross over pipe. I removed one long bolt from the right side and two long bolts from the left side that go through the thermostat housing, and three bolts from the back of the alternator, but the pipe doesn't seem to want to move. I don't want to break anything.

Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: 1998 4.6 Triton - Slow Coolant Leak - Head Gasket?

New truck to me. Truck was advertised with a slow coolant leak. Figured I would trace the leak down and get it repaired no issues. Anyway, working on it this evening I take a close look around the oil filler area and notice the dreaded milkshake color.

I drained the oil out of the truck and the oil actually came out nice and black. Is the headgasket the only area that would cause the oil/coolant mixture? Supposedly the truck has never been overheated.

At any rate, on to find articles on how to pull apart a 4.6L Triton head. I'll see if I'm up to this challenge.

Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: 2002 - Coolant Leak On Driver Side Front Right Near The Thermostat Housing

I'm trying to figure where the coolant leak is. Appears to originate on the driver's side front, right near the thermostat housing. Since the engine tilts back the entire drivers side is wet. The thermostat gasket appears to be OK, but it does have a lot of miles on it.

If it's not the thermostat then can coolant leak from the cross over tube. And is the cross over removable without taking off the intake. There appears to be a bolt coming up from underneath on the passenger side.

Also, does coolant flow through this plastic intake. If it does, then the leak could be some where else, if not, then it's probably the thermostat.

Ford Super Duty (1999-2016) :: Coolant Leak On Top Of Engine

I bought this truck used several months back and have ran it extremely hard. It's supposedly studded and EGR deleted. The whole engine was replaced at 183,xxx by some diesel place. Anyways, while I was driving I smelled coolant and thought that was funny so I ignored it. Anyways, My livewire tuner started seeing a coolant and engine oil increase. I figured I'd go ahead and drive it home. It got to 153 F* and the coolant was around 129 F* The oil cooler has been clogging up and I just got my brand new Ford one in.

So that will be replaced sooner rather than later. When I got home, I checked the coolant level and there was nothing in it!! It was pretty much empty. So I put the water hose on it and turned the water on and after about 2 mins steam started coming out near the turbo. I mean a crapload of steam. I turned the water on again and saw that it was coming out right next to the EGR delete. It's hard to tell exactly but looks like the intake manifold??? What could it be? It's not the hose for the EGR. The degas bottle has never overflowed, there's no white smoke except on cold starts in really cold temps.

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: Severe Oil Leak And Coolant Disappearing

I was searching for an oil leak forever. In my search for the leak I resealed my hpop, redid oilcooler rings and last week had a friend pull my motor to redo the pan gasket. The leaks were almost down to where I thought we had them beat. Now in the last couple days I'm losing coolant and oil....bad. there is oil on the ground mostly from the cross member. Question is did my oil cooler fix not take? I have read that a nicked of ring can cause this.

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: Coolant Leak On Passenger Side

2003 7.3 175,000 miles...

Saw a stain in my driveway where you normally see AC drip. Opened hood and saw degas empty.

Looking around like crazy and find wet area. Where the coolant line turns down beside the passenger fender.

Looks wet near bend going toward running board. Didn't get to inspect much but I pulled back a bit of loom to inspect shape of lines and they look great.

What could be going on?

Dodge - Ram :: 1997 - Major Coolant Leak Coming Right From The Middle Of Front Of Engine

I've got a 1997 Dogde Ram 1500 Pickup. It's got a major coolant leak that seems to be coming right from the middle of the front of the engine. I can't see where it's coming from. I changed the thermostat and the water pump, but it seems to be even behind that. There is a rubber hose that comes off the water pump and disappears between the two banks. I can only see a tiny end of it, where it goes. It looks like getting to that would involve taking off the whole intake manifold. If that's the case, I might as well total the truck. I dunno...

Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: Engine Oil In Coolant?

97 f150 4x4 4.6L V8 196XXX miles

So last oil change I noticed I was missing two quarts of oil over a 3 month period and It doesn't burn very much if any at all. Well I started snooping around and noticed my coolant smelled like exhaust... So I took it to a mechanic for a coolant flush and to try a quick fix in a bottle before I rip everything apart. First he did a chem test and he said it the color only changed a little bit so the leak wasn't huge yet. Well he pulled out quarts of oil in the cooling system and filled it back up with the gasket sealer, ran it hot like he should have, and drove it for 4 or so miles, said it seemed everything seemed good. Also had him throw in a new thermostat. Drove it home less than 2 miles and coolant is overflowing from the coolant reservoir on to my driveway

Ok now before I took it in it never gave me any problems. I had hoooot heat, never overheated and exhaust never seemed abnormal. So after I got it back from the mechanic I threw the front end on jack stands and tried burping hoping it was just air bubbles. Got a lot out but there always seems to be more. Couple days after that it puked coolant again but it still never overheats. The hot air never gets as hot as it used to, and usually the hot air gets colder and colder at idle and heats up when I start moving again (during this the temp gauge does not change noticeably). One time however as I was driving at a constant speed the air got colder and colder and the temp gauge started heading to cold even though it was completely warm a moment before. Shortly after I arrived at my destination and it was leaking coolant again but I didn't keep driving to find out what was going to happen next.

Burped it again. Now no matter what I do though I can't seem to get the top coolant tube to get hot like it should be when the engine is warm even though I was able to the first time. So I'm pretty sure my head gasket is toast but what I don't understand is what made it get so bad so suddenly, especially when I was trying to take preventative measures. And how is it that the oil is going into the coolant, I was under the impression it happens the other way around.

I understand that at this point I need a new engine or head gasket but I just don't get what went so wrong. Now I'm weighing my options of selling as is, replacing head gasket, or junkyard engine with low miles considering I have 196XXX on my current one.

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: Persistent Coolant Leak At The Thermostat Outlet

The truck has been a dream for several months and I had a coolant leak at the thermostat outlet. Changed the fitting and thermostat and sealed with lots of blue monkey snot. It's been perfect for a couple months but a week ago it started leaking again. Exactly the same as last time. I cleaned the mating surface of the water pump with a plastic scraper to remove the old sealer and then finished it with fine scotch brite. I looked at several parts breakdowns and none of them showed a gasket.......

Ford Super Duty (1999-2016) :: 2003 F350 - Minor Coolant Leak

03 f350 5.4. Very minor coolant leak at the moment. Valley behind water pump looks a little damp and leak has shown a little on the passenger side block above the starter. Shows on the tranny bell housing and hits the y pipe every once and a while. I am thinking its the hose that runs under the intake manifold but wanted to check in here for some wisdom. Can it be bypassed or rerun without pulling everything.
