I have a 1998 F-150 and when shifting into 4 wheel drive (manual floor mount shifter) the drive shaft from the transfer case turns but the wheels do not engage.
Looking for a diagram of how the axle works?
When I turn the switch on the front wheels don't engage. I replaced the two vacuum solenoids on the firewall no change. I replaced the actuator motor on the transfer case and everything worked....once. Tried to go around the back of the house thought I was in 4x4 but front wheels not engaging again. buried in mud. I let it set there overnight. Went out earlier started it and put it in 4x4 and it started puling out front wheels engaged. As soon as I gave it a little gas the front wheels became disengaged and it wouldn't go anywhere. I made several more attempts and no luck. I did the vacuum test where you turn the heater on panel and if there's a vacuum leak somewhere the heater blower will default to defrost. It passed this test so I'm assuming there is no leak anywhere. Why it worked right after I replaced the transfer case motor and again only after I got stuck and it set in the mud overnight?

View 2 RepliesSo my Push Button 4 wheel drive wont engage. The light on the dash wont light up and it doesn't shift into 4x4. Where to start? I would like to check the simple stuff first. O and my heat only gets hot when im giving the vehicle gas. This is all on a 2003 Ford Explorer.
View 2 RepliesI have a 2000 F-150 XLT Supercab 5.4 4x4 with the dash shifter. My front axle won't engage when shifting into 4x4. A few months ago the vacuum solenoids were replaced and they sound as though they are functioning properly. The diaphragm isn't moving the lever thing and i can't get the lever to move with a screwdriver either.
I know it has worked the past two weekends. Two weeks ago it was in a significant amount of mud and possibly submerged at times. I power washed everything pretty good immediately afterwords though and it has worked in between then and now. What could be going on?
I recently purchased a 2003 F350 FX4 Dually with the 7.3L Diesel. It has locking hubs and electric shift in the cab.
I have had locking hubs before that you had to engage to shift into 4 wheel drive and I have had trucks without locking hubs.
My truck didn't come with a manual, so I am looking for instructions for the proper use of this system.
I have a 1998 F-150 XLT, 2WD, 4.2L, V6, just over 103,000 miles. My transmission shifts fine into reverse but when I put it into drive it is very slow to engage, sometimes it doesn't. I have to put it in drive, hold down the brakes, give it some gas and then it will engage and lurch forward. I have check the fluid level and quality. Both are fine. This just started to happen two days ago with no fore warning. No previous problems with transmission.
View 4 RepliesIts a automatic transmission with a v6 4.3 vortec. The front axle will not engage, it is not the acuator (I replaced it and the cable) you can pull the cable and the axle will engage. There is a low buzzing noise(coming from the drivers side) until you give it gas. This noise stops when the front axle is engaged. The transfer case will go from hi to low without any problems.

View 6 RepliesI have a 2000 ford f-150 4 wheel drive that will not disengage, I am down here in south fla where and don't put it in 4 wheel drive much, but yesterday I put in 4 wheel drive and I heard the click click and it engaged I put it in drive and drove it about 5-10 miles parked it and turned the switch to 2 wheel high and got out , got back in the truck turn her back on and the 4 by 4 lamp came one went off then came back on and stayed on and it still in 4 wheel drive and wont disengage.

It does work,but to get it to engage I had to drive in reverse for a couple feet then it locked it and everything was fine,pretty sure that isn't normal. What could be wrong with it? View 1 RepliesI have a 2002 Extended Cab F150 2WD 5.4L 3.55 Open. I have recently begun to notice a clunking or "sounds like something mechanical shifting" when I come to a stop or take my foot off the brake before accelerating (as in, when the light turns green.) The shocks are shot, so, some of the noise when I stop is likely due to bounce back, but the noise when I take my foot off the brake is clearly not related to suspension relaxation.
I jacked up the front, passenger corner and checked the wheel play. I immediately noticed wheel play in both 12/6 and 9/3 hand positions. First thought was obviously ball joints, but when I looked more closely I found that the steering knuckle itself was not moving at all. (I only had one corner jacked up, so, the torsion bar might have been stabilizing the steering knuckle to some degree, but...nonetheless, the wheel play is still there.)
So, the wheel play is between the wheel/rotor, and the steering knuckle. To me this suggests wheel bearings. But, I'm not sure how much play is allowable between the wheel and the spindle. Should the rotor/wheel move at all with respect to the spindle/steering knuckle? How much is okay? Does movement suggest I need to replace the wheel bearings? (I installed the rotor and wheel bearings myself last year.)
My selector switch does not light up when engaging four wheel drive on my 98 f150,could this be my GEM module gone bad ?
View 6 RepliesMy 4 wheel drive is not engaging on a 2001 F150. The indicator lites on the dash illuminate to suggest that the truck is in 4 wheel drive but sigh...it stays in 2 wheel drive. No gross sounds and the indicator lights are not flashing. Could this be a fuse or a relay issue of some sort. What else should I try?
View 3 RepliesI bought a 99 ranger few months ago cant the 4x4 has not worked in the truck for about 4 years. Bought it off my dad. He hasn't figured it out the t case locks in the drive shaft spins but hubs will not lock in. Has new hubs in it and still not working. Trying to get it fixed so I can park the diesel for the winter and run the ranger.
View 3 RepliesI have just switched from GM to Ford and have a new F250 4x4 XLT. I am wondering how to engage 4 wheel drive correctly. I have the manual shifter and the manual lock hubs. However during my test drive I shifted the lever into 4H and 4L and it seemed to engage just fine. Do I need to lock my hubs as well? Or if im just in a wet spot can i just shift into 4h without locking my hubs? I know if I am in anything serious I need to lock the hubs. I just want to be sure before I get into a tricky situation. My 02 GM all i had to do was push a button and it shifted automatically.
View 7 RepliesI got myself a 1997 explorer Australian model when I got it (here's the problem) if you put it in drive it will not engage but if put in first will drive normal then shift into second all good now u have push O.D then shift into drive all good (unless u slow down to almost a stop) ? New problem is, it has gone and lost reverse, put it in reverse and it engages with a small clank (normal) but just slips with any revs. I have read posts here talking about upper and lower valve body gaskets and transgo shiftkit which I have ordered but do there maybe more parts needed? Cause it's going to cost me lot just to put transmission fluid back in.
View 4 RepliesI have an 01 s10 with the 3 switch 4x4. When I switch into 4hi I hear the click at the dash and I hear the switch on the transfer case but it doesn't engage in 4x4. The lights o. The dash act normal and says its in 4 wheel. I've had problems with the switch on the front of the transfer case in the past and was able to clean it and it was OK for awhile and now nothing. I replaced that switch and hear it working but still not engaging. I did notice a bad vac line on the firewall but not sure where it goes yet. Is there an order I should be checking components? What should I look for next? Also should mention in 2hi I get a whining noise like a shaft is spinning but when in 4hi the noise goes away and it drives like its in 2hi.
