I own a 2004 F-150 FX4 5.7L V8, I notice this morning that I had gear oil coming out of my rear Axle Vent Tube. What would cause this issue? I'm kinda at a loss as to what would cause it.

The rear axle vent tube is literally blowing oil out the top, where it's loosely connected to the bed. It does this every few weeks. I pulled the hose and ran a rifle cleaning rod down it to make sure it wasn't plugged ... it wasn't.
It seems like it's building up pressure somewhere, then blowing all at once, but why?
I had a loud whine from the rear axle of my 04 SCREW and had the bearings replaced at the dealership. It has been about a year/12k miles since it was done and I just noticed that the vent hose is missing. I'm not sure if they left it off or if it fell off on its own. Anyway, my question is, do I need to replace the fluid once I put a new hose on? I'm not sure how much if any dirt or water might have gotten in there. Also, where does the hose go up to? I figure it must clip to the frame somewhere.
View 5 RepliesMy 98 mountaineer keeps throwing rear end oil out the vent tube.. Why does it keep doing this?? its been doing this for a while and had to change an axle seal, I think because of this. It stopped doing this for a little while after I changed the seals and put in new oil.. Its not over full.. When it stopped I figured it was because the oil was old and was foaming or something.. But now its back to doing it again... The tube is not plugged.. Why does it keep doing this???
View 3 RepliesSome family members borrowed my truck, and when they returned I have a loud whining noise coming from the rear axle, which I have determined is a 9.75 rear. I checked oil level and it was high enough, but has a slight leak from the pinion seal. Everything feels solid but I have nothing to compare it to.
Its on a 2005 Super Cab with the 5.4L 183,000 miles. The front pinion seal was replaced in Feb 2 years ago, by the dealer's mechanic, who may have been a shade tree mechanic.
I am a Youtube Certified Mechanic, as in, I watched about 10 videos of people working on their 9.75 differentials, and realize I don't have all of the tools to do the job, such as a press, or race drivers, or the special gauge.
How many of you have tackled this issue? What did you find? What am I looking at for cost? I am on a very small budget.
Looking to change out my front differential cover tomorrow, cover is pitted, rusted, corroded, and leaking at the seals. While under there I want to inspect the vent for the axle and differential (and replace if it's clogged - which I believe is leading to the seal leaking). Looking for info about the vent tube location on the front axle? Thought I read somewhere it was on the cover itself, turns out that's a negative.

View 3 RepliesI have a F-250 4WD with 7.5L which has a MC/Holley 4180c sitting on top. It was getting very poor mpg (like 5-6 miles/gal) and then was getting harder and harder to start. This progressed rather quickly to not starting with fuel coming out of the primary vent tube. I suspect it has to do with the primary float stuck open. I was considering rebuilding the carburetor. Is this over reaction prematurely or is there something like float adjustment that may rectify all of the symptoms described. If a rebuild is in order what is the information I would need to ensure getting the correct rebuild kit. Info that I have so far from research is it is Motorcraft ID #E5HE-9510-MC.

View 5 Replieshad a leaking rear driveshaft seal at the axle and replaced it and fluid. 75W145 full synthetic as recommended. it was changed at 128000 and I've started to get an axle whine over 25 MPH up to 65-70MPH. quites down around 80 MPH. I just checked it after 2 months (whine just started) with 133000. Any TSB. does this fall under TSB 05-23-3? Noise sounds like I've got really aggressive tires on the truck. Only have Dayton HT all season. Did not add the XL3 additive. Would this work at this juncture.

Much to my surprise I found a non-OEM battery installed and the vent tube elbow missing!
View 10 Repliesso while replacing the rear brake lines in my 2001 F-250. / 5.4, the flex line that drops from the frame bolts to the axle through the axle breather threaded vent line. The friggin thing crumbled on me and now I can't find a replacement for it. Where I can get it or what it's actual name / part number is so I can call the Ford dealer and hope it's not obsoleted?
View 3 RepliesI have a 2004 F150, 5.4L V8. A few years back I was in an accident when someone slammed into the front of my truck. The right front wheel & tire took the brunt of the accident. I thought the repair shop had everything back to normal until recently I occasionally have a grinding sound coming from the right front side, seems to be related to the axle. It doesn't do it all the time just at random while I'm driving. The only solution I can find is to pull over or slow my speed to a crawl. Once I slow down enough or turn my wheel one way or the other its like something SLAMS back into place. I had it looked at by a local mechanic and they couldn't find anything wrong. Could it be something in my right front axle?
View 7 RepliesThis has going on for a few months now off and on. Whenever drive my F hard I notice this metallic click when i go to shift hard into second. The metallic click seems to be coming from the front of the car. I also get it if I'm around 3600rpm in and stomp on the pedal in first or second. It also happens when I shift into reverse. What it could be??
It also happens when i floor it and let off and do not change gears mainly in first and second. Sometimes i get a double click also.
At first I thought something could have gotten trapped in the engine bay and it only accelerated to a high enough speed to cause an audible noise but seeing as it been 3 or 4 months I don't think its the problem. It does not seem to effect spend and it does not make the click all the time.
I need a front axle tube for a 1999 F-150 4x4, I have tried local parts houses and dealership with no luck. Any information where I might locate one.
View 6 RepliesI just purchased a used 2010 fx2 screw with 5.4 and 6-speed auto. How can I find out what rear gear ratio the truck has? do I have to contact a dealer to find this out or are their any web based sites that can decode the vin? Is the gear ratio marked on the truck anywhere?
View 2 RepliesI had the rear axle seals replaced less than 1000 miles ago. Now the axle is getting whiny. First I thought maybe that the tires made noise but now I'm pretty convinced it comes from the axle.
With a seal replacement, what do they do that might impact the axle - over tighten the bearings?
I also had the rear diff fluid replaced - perhaps they put in the wrong stuff...
Should I replace fluid and see if that stops or should I simply take it to the dealer and let them deal with it?
My front differential on my 97 Silverado Z71 sometimes vents some fluid out of the vent tube. I end up smelling it in the interior while driving. The vent tube top is above the top of the radiator and has the little cap on it. The first time it did it, was during a heavy rain. I had it in 4wd on the freeway doing around 60-70 mph. I figured it was because I was in 4wd. It did it yesterday after a 35 mile drive on the freeway again, but I was in 2wd the whole time. Outside air temp was over 100 degrees and I am using Royal Purple fluid. I checked the level a couple of weeks ago and it was below the fill plug about 1/2 inch.
View 5 RepliesWhile diagnosing an issue with my ebrakes I found the drivers rear axle seal was leaking coating the ebrakes in gear oil, replaced the seal. Decided to pull the differential fill plug and check to make sure it was full - drained a good bit out pulling the hub to replace the seal. To my horror this is what I find when I pull the plug. First photo is as it came out on the magnet - second is after a clean up. What is it? I am almost afraid to drop the cover....
