Noticed a small whine coming from the A/C compressor? I caught ear of it the other morning when I was putting the trash on the street and the truck was running. It's definitely the A/C because when you cut it off the noise goes away.
View 2 RepliesI got a new to me truck. It's a 2004 F150 Lariat 4x4 with the 5.4L. It's got a whine that I believe is coming from the rear differential. I'm going to change the fluid. My axle code is 26 which I believe is 3.73 non-limited slip. My owners manual says to use 75w-90 but I've seen a lot of posts on here that say to use 75w-140. Which is right or better? Also, is my rear differential the 9.75"?
View 14 RepliesOK so I noticed the last few weeks that I have just a small shutter coming from my rear end every now and then. It feels like it locks up for just a sec and then is fine. It will normally do this earlier in the day and maybe once or twice. Is this telling me its time to add some more friction modifier into the rear diff or do I have another issue. I don't notice it once the truck is warmed up and been driving around some.

I have a 2007 F150 with a 5.4. I am having an issue with my A/C and more.
Here are the symptoms:
1) A/C doesn't blow cold, at times.
2) Compressor not coming on, according to mechanic.
3) Engine sounds like a freight train, at times. Like on a super cold day and it has to work hard.
4) Very poor fuel mileage since this started.
I took it to a shop, and they said it was the engine cooling fan that would not come on. So I replaced it. Same issue. I then took it back and was told there is a wiring problem. After 3 days they couldn't find it. I needed my truck back and dropped it off again. Then they said it was the A/C compressor, maybe. They wanted to try it and then see what happened. I told them no way.
Temperature, according to the gauge is good. Noise comes and goes. Not dependent on anything. Weather, temperature, car heated up or dead cold. Just comes and goes.
I have a 2004 F-150 FX4 4x4 with 80k with a 9.75 LS, recently I've had the truck start making a humming sound/vibration (similar to the sound/feel you get when crossing onto rumble strips, only not as intense) when at speed anywhere above 20 mph or so, its doing this all of the time. The strange thing about the sound is that is only occurs when I am driving completely straight or to the left, if have the steering wheel just slightly turned to the right of center, the sound and vibration completely goes always until the wheel returns back to center. also I've started to notice that sometimes (not all the time) at lower speeds when let off of the gas and decelerate. I'm getting a very high pitch whine that sounds like a metal-metal sound but only lasts for a few seconds then goes away.
I cant tell where if the sounds are coming from the front or back and i cant decipher which side it is coming from. Also, I don't know if it is related but over the summer, probably june or so, i had to drain the fluid from the rear end and replace and add an extra bottle of friction modifier to get rid of the shuddering problem alot of people with 04's have run into.
It only does it sometimes. When I put truck in reverse the back up sensor sound just goes BEEP none stop even if there's behind my truck. Sensors on the bumper looked clean. Why?

View 14 RepliesMy '04 4wd has a pretty loud rear end howl, it is a LS but don't think it's an LS problem, no noises or chattering when turning. Howling is loudest at 50 to 60, but some noise at all speeds. I don't mind tearing into the rear myself, but not sure if I could tell what was wrong just by looking, i suppose bad bearing might be obvious, but not sure how to diagnose gear lash tolerances. It only has 107000 mi. and is an 8.8 rear I believe.
View 2 Replieshad a leaking rear driveshaft seal at the axle and replaced it and fluid. 75W145 full synthetic as recommended. it was changed at 128000 and I've started to get an axle whine over 25 MPH up to 65-70MPH. quites down around 80 MPH. I just checked it after 2 months (whine just started) with 133000. Any TSB. does this fall under TSB 05-23-3? Noise sounds like I've got really aggressive tires on the truck. Only have Dayton HT all season. Did not add the XL3 additive. Would this work at this juncture.
View 5 RepliesMy truck has 57k miles on it. At 1800-2100 RPM it whines under or over it is just fine. it has a new air filter in it as well, still makes the noise, it doesn't matter what gear i am in, it only does this under load. if i free rev it , it will not do it.
View 2 RepliesWe've had a lot of rain here in pa lately and i hit a few big puddles the other day and now i have a growl slash wine in the front of my motor,now i narrowed it down to something driven by the bely because I removed the belt and no noise all pulleys feel good and smooth except the ac compressor if you spin it by hand it has a rough/dry feeling and sound to it but the noise doesn't change with the ac on or off its just constant grinding/whine. Replace the ac compressor pulley bearing that what I am thinking it is and don't really want to change out the whole compressor..
View 1 RepliesMy truck seams to have developed a whine. It gets louder with increased RPM. Sounds like its coming from the motor, specifically the front of the motor, maybe one of the pulleys? Water pump??? Alternator??? Im not sure but Im about to head out on a 2800 mile round trip pulling a heavy load and want my truck to be ready for the trip...? It sounds like its gotten louder in the last couple weeks but I think its just because I had a new manifold installed on one side and the truck is quieter making this seam louder.... But I don't know if I should be worried about it.. I don't want to waste money (right before a big trip) chasing a noise if its not something that is an issue..
View 6 RepliesI have a factory plastic bedliner in my 05 F150 with the 8ft bed. The tie downs in the front of the bed have a small gap that allows water to leak under the bedliner. I have tried using silicone caulk around the seam but the flexing of the liner makes it come unglued.
How to keep the water from getting under? The water that makes its way through the seam drains out of the factory holes in the front of the bed but I still worry about the moisture under there causing rust.
I have a switch under the dash that Im not quite sure what it does. I have an 07 XLT supercrew. Has the factory alarm I imagine. My brother has the same year, but no switch. Doesn't seem to do anything, tried to trace wires, the seem to join up with some other wires under neath the steering console area.

Long story short, I have a small vacuum leak in the 4wd system. I disconnected the lines going to the hubs to prevent grinding them to pieces as they are brand new. This, of course lock the front hubs in and disengages the X-fer case in 2wd.
It is not engaging in 4wd unless I select it, so I don't imagine it hurting anything in the X-fer case or anything. Other than the extra rolling mass, is this okay to operate at until I resolve my vacuum issue, provided I close all openings and places for trash to get in?
I'm adding an aftermarket intake to my 04' 5.4 & noticed on the bottom of my intake there was maybe 10 small drilled holes, ((1/8") in diameter. Are these holes OEM from the factory, & what is there purpose? Seems to me that the holes would suck in "some" hot air from the engine bay, yet it's main sourse of air is from the inside of the driver's side inner fender well.

Shudders and jerks going up inclines (big or small). Bad gas is being reported at all the local stations...Started using Sea foam and Lucas fuel line cleaner/ethanol treatment. After three tanks of that, I ran tank down till low fuel came on, kept driving, and no more shudders/jerks and ran great while low fuel light was on.
OK...decided to fill tank with Non ethanol gas this time (not Shell gas), added Sea foam and Lucas fuel line cleaner, and shakes, shudders and jerks all the time now.
Before no check engine lights came on but for once when I romped on the pedal once to blow it out, but it went off once I let off. Today going to work, entering traffic, engine light came on, blinked and stayed on. Truck now shudders and jerks all the time when I give it gas, and can only drive like Paw Paw to keep if from doing that.
Local shop ran test and #7 cylinder is not firing and two lean fuel notices. It will be Tuesday before they can check and if needed, replace coil on #7 cylinder.
I'm thinking of installing a new Fuel Pump Control Modulator as per a thread I read here, but only after they check/replace the coil. AND ALSO...turning the OD off did stop the shutters/jerks.
i have an 04 f-150 with a 5.4 motor. about 2000 miles ago the power steering pump started to whine really loud. I sucked out the power steering fluid and started it up and the fluid that back into the tank looked like it was gritty and rusty. I replaced it out a few times and no change. I then did the job of replacing the power steering pump which was about a 5 hour job.
It was quiet for about 5 miles and the new one started whining. Every week I have been sucking out the old fluid and replacing it and it still seems to be gritty. What could I do to quiet it down? the steering works perfect btw. I am looking at selling this truck and buying an 09 or newer ford and want to quiet it down before selling it. The truck has 88,000 miles on it and i am the original owner.
Slowed down to turn a corner and the strangest, loudest, noise - a loud screaming whine that lastest like 5 seconds. Also perhaps a spin noise and a little bit of a thump like going back in gear. Went out to drive it again, and again it did it but only once. I then drove it hard, fast and slow, in 4 wheel drive, out of 4 wheel drive, stop and go and it has not done it again.
View 6 RepliesTruck has the EATC system. Blower motor works, blowing 78.5 degrees at the vent. Compressor will not kick on at all. I checked all fuses and they are good. Put gauges on the low and high side, both sides register a constant 70psi, held for 30 minutes with the a/c on max. What the problem is?
View 4 RepliesI went and fired up my ac today for the first time, and guess what no ac. So I crawl under the truck to check the compressor out, and guess what I find? The stupid face of the compressor had came loose and was sitting between my frame and the steering rack. Just glad it didn't fall off the truck, now I need to put it back on, but what size bolt. Looking for a spare compressor or know the size and length of the bolt?
