My truck has 57k miles on it. At 1800-2100 RPM it whines under or over it is just fine. it has a new air filter in it as well, still makes the noise, it doesn't matter what gear i am in, it only does this under load. if i free rev it , it will not do it.
View 2 RepliesI have a 2011 Corolla S with approximately 11,500 miles. It has been regularly serviced at a Toyota dealership. The oil level is checked regularly and is full. Today I heard a slight but noticeable tapping sound when the motor is in the 1800-2100 rpm range. it is quiet throughout the rest of the engine's power band. Could this be a serious problem in the making?

View 2 RepliesI have a 2004 f150 lariat crew cab 4x4 with the 5.4 3 valve. It now has 113 000 miles. Since i got it at 85 000 miles its had a hiss when the engine was under load. So like light acceleration or driving into wind. The guy i bought it from said that it had a manifold leak so that's what i figured it was. I got the manifold fixed and it still hisses. There are no check engine lights. It almost feels like my engine lags when it starts hissing. It sounds like its coming from right on the other side of the fire wall. What it could be?
View 3 RepliesI'll try to explain what the truck is doing best I can. I'm not sure if it's the engine or tranny. When you lug the truck on a hill or put a load behind it and lug it the truck jerks like the engine is cutting out or the tranny is jerking, I can't tell which. You can drive it all day long on a flat road or small hills and you can't make it do it. It does it worse going up a hill with a load behind it. You can lug the truck on a steep hill let off the accelerator and mash it back down and it will do it almost every time. I've tried overriding the overdrive and it still does it. If you keep the rpms above 2000 up a hill it won't do it. I've had it checked by a transmission shop and they couldn't make the truck do it. Also it doesn't throw any codes or put the check engine light on when this happens. 2007 F150 supercrew 5.4 auto, with 88,000 miles.
View 12 Replies have been lurking the forum for the last several months ever since I bought my 2008 F150. I bought it used from a dealership and have had it at their shop no less than seven times since I bought it in March, all for the same things.
The first thing I noticed shortly after buying the truck was that after the truck warmed up it would idle rough. My chief complaint by far, I took the truck in to be looked at and this is when all the real fun began. Similarly I had intermittent power steering that I asked to have looked at.
I was told the fuel filter was completely clogged. They cleaned it and assured me all was well. They also bled the power steering system because apparently someone had changed the PS pump and not bled the system afterwards. I got into the truck to leave and it was idling no better than when I dropped it off. I complained again and was told that "this is just how this truck idles" and called BS. They offered to have the throttle body cleaned for me the next day to alleviate any remnants of rough idle.
Had the throttle body cleaned the next day and took the truck home. After about an hour or two I was still thoroughly dissatisfied with the idle and called back to complain. I forgot to mention that I bought my truck from a Chevrolet dealer who had just taken it in on trade about three days before I bought it. Because I complained they offered to send the truck to a Ford dealership for further diagnosis.
The Ford dealership found fouled plugs, a cracked intake manifold and the water pump and fan clutch both had excessive play. They said those would create a rocking sensation which could be misinterpreted as a rough idle. Over $2500 the Chevy dealership paid them and I was called to come pick up the truck.
I didn't even make it out of the parking lot because the truck was whining something fierce. I couldn't believe no one QC'd the vehicle and complained again. Next morning I am called and they said that the Ford dealership had put the intake manifold gasket in wrong and it had been corrected and I could come pick up the truck.
I go pick up the truck and note that not only is the idle still not right, but now the truck is making a hissing/squealing noise when the truck hits 1800/1900 RPM's. Its strange because its not really RPM specific as it is specific to the pedal position. Accelerating or decelerating causes it to go away but its there nonetheless. Whats worse is that in highway driving at 65 MPH, the pedal is in just the wrong position and it hisses constantly. This sound never goes away...and once its been heard its impossible to unhear.
I complain again and they send the truck back to the Ford dealership. At this point I'm dealing directly with the Director of Service because mine has become a high priority case. The Service Director drives with me, confirms my problem and takes the truck himself to Ford. He drives with their shop foreman and they too confirm the problem.
A week goes by and Ford tells him its wind noise. This is complete bullarky because it happens whether I'm going 20 or 65. He calls them on it and they keep the truck another couple days. They call back and say the truck has nothing mechanically wrong with it and that they are done. Service Director goes and picks up the truck and takes it to a second Ford dealership.
Three days go by and they call and claim Eureka! We've found the problem! Clogged catalytic converter causing air flow restrictions. They replace two converters and I go to pick up the truck. It runs like garbage. Further the sound is still there. Call Chevy, leave the truck and take their loaner back home. Next morning Ford's Foreman calls and basically tells me that there's nothing else wrong with my truck and that he even reprogrammed the PCM (which is why it runs to bad all the time now I guess) to get rid of the idle problems.
Long story short here's everything thats been done:
- Cleaned a clogged fuel filter
- Replaced fouled plugs
- Replaced the intake manifold and gaskets
- Replaced the fan belt
- Replaced the fan clutch
- Replaced the water pump
- Replaced two catalytic converters
- Cleaned the throttle body
- Bled the PS system
- Reprogrammed the PCM and transmission control module
After all of this I still have a hissing sound when I accelerate (video 1:
It seems the truck runs worse once its warmed up and even worse once the AC is turned on. I'm sure he programmed the PCM wrong and thats what is causing the truck to run rough.
My 2005 F150 makes a diesel sound when I accelerate. It only does it between 1600 to 1800 RPM and stops. It only does it in overdrive. Its a 5.4 liter with about 95000 miles on it. What this could be? I cant tell if the noise is coming from the tranny or engine.
View 1 RepliesIt's a 2004 4wd 4.6 v8 with 140,000 miles. My wife was driving around town today and had to park it at her daughter's house because even if you floor it,the engine will only rev to about 1500-1800 rpm's and idles really low,maybe 600 rpm. she said right before it started running bad,there was a bad smell. Also there is a humming/rattling noise that sounds like it's coming from the upper intake/throttle body area. I went and looked at it,tried to pull codes.
The check engine light isn't on and there are no codes stored in the computer. A couple of days ago,there was code po420 (Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)and the check engine light was on. Engine was running fine. I cleared the code,and it never came back. I am not sure this is related,just trying to give all info possible.
I have a 2004 F-150 FX4 4x4 with 80k with a 9.75 LS, recently I've had the truck start making a humming sound/vibration (similar to the sound/feel you get when crossing onto rumble strips, only not as intense) when at speed anywhere above 20 mph or so, its doing this all of the time. The strange thing about the sound is that is only occurs when I am driving completely straight or to the left, if have the steering wheel just slightly turned to the right of center, the sound and vibration completely goes always until the wheel returns back to center. also I've started to notice that sometimes (not all the time) at lower speeds when let off of the gas and decelerate. I'm getting a very high pitch whine that sounds like a metal-metal sound but only lasts for a few seconds then goes away.
I cant tell where if the sounds are coming from the front or back and i cant decipher which side it is coming from. Also, I don't know if it is related but over the summer, probably june or so, i had to drain the fluid from the rear end and replace and add an extra bottle of friction modifier to get rid of the shuddering problem alot of people with 04's have run into.
Have a friend and looking at his truck for him. He was towing a boat and climbing a steep grade hill. As he described it, it felt like he lost all power. Did manage to get it to the top of the hill and stopped to check it out.
Noticed the under of the truck dripping oil. Checked the motor oil and none on the stick. Put 4 quarts in the motor, started it back up and oil pressure is good and motor sounds fine.
The strange thing is the motor is dry. Can not find where the oil leaked out. All the oil is located on the transmission and transfer case. I'm not too familiar with these Triton 5.4's but where could that oil possibly have come from? I'll re-look this morning.
Also, with oil in motor, and it is idling, there is no oil leak or drip anywhere. Is there a pressure regulator in this oil system and the load he was exerting cause it to release?
It only does it sometimes. When I put truck in reverse the back up sensor sound just goes BEEP none stop even if there's behind my truck. Sensors on the bumper looked clean. Why?
View 1 RepliesI have a 2004 150 with 165,000 miles I sometimes pull a 5 by 8 trailer. when pulling trailer in overdrive and excelorating the engone will cough several times. I took it to a mechanic and he told me that there was nothing he could do that I needed a new engine. I can pull trailer out of overdrive with no problem. don't undrstand why I need new engine....
View 3 RepliesI have a Lariat 4x4 supercrew cab with a CD 6 disc changer head unit. Error message. No Disc, and Load Error. Will not eject any of the 6 loaded CDs. Pulled/reset fuse. No luck. Banged on dash while trying to eject any of the loaded CDs.. no luck. Unit cycles when first starting the engine. Radio works fine. Unit locked up....Ford Mx tech says the solenoid that holds the CD is frozen in position and will not release.
View 3 RepliesHard to describe sound, but it only happens under load. It happens at any speed, but more predominently at higher speeds. When I lift off the gas it stops. I can keep it going up hill since I'm maintaining speed rather than accelerating over the limit. The other day I heard another F150 beside me making the same noise going up a hill.
View 14 Replies I have a 04 5.4 w/ a whipple supercharger. truck has 104k miles. Has a misfire in cyl 4 (p0304, p0316) And spark knock.. I've changed the plugs, coil on cyl 4, fuel filter, and today the o2 sensor(pass side upper, bank 2??). I've ran tecron injector cleaner threw it, and always used Chevron 90 octane. (highest in Alaska)
The noise only happens when under load, or accelerating with more then half the throttle. doesn't happen when i slowly get up to speed. What I could do next? About to take it to the dealer to run a full diagnostic test on it.. Also, does not hesitate or bog. drives normal just with that noise
I got a new to me truck. It's a 2004 F150 Lariat 4x4 with the 5.4L. It's got a whine that I believe is coming from the rear differential. I'm going to change the fluid. My axle code is 26 which I believe is 3.73 non-limited slip. My owners manual says to use 75w-90 but I've seen a lot of posts on here that say to use 75w-140. Which is right or better? Also, is my rear differential the 9.75"?
View 14 RepliesMy '04 4wd has a pretty loud rear end howl, it is a LS but don't think it's an LS problem, no noises or chattering when turning. Howling is loudest at 50 to 60, but some noise at all speeds. I don't mind tearing into the rear myself, but not sure if I could tell what was wrong just by looking, i suppose bad bearing might be obvious, but not sure how to diagnose gear lash tolerances. It only has 107000 mi. and is an 8.8 rear I believe.
View 2 Replieshad a leaking rear driveshaft seal at the axle and replaced it and fluid. 75W145 full synthetic as recommended. it was changed at 128000 and I've started to get an axle whine over 25 MPH up to 65-70MPH. quites down around 80 MPH. I just checked it after 2 months (whine just started) with 133000. Any TSB. does this fall under TSB 05-23-3? Noise sounds like I've got really aggressive tires on the truck. Only have Dayton HT all season. Did not add the XL3 additive. Would this work at this juncture.
View 5 RepliesNoticed a small whine coming from the A/C compressor? I caught ear of it the other morning when I was putting the trash on the street and the truck was running. It's definitely the A/C because when you cut it off the noise goes away.
View 2 RepliesI have a 2006 ford f 150 with a 5.4 Triton 3v engine and every time I floor it and the engine reaches 3000 rpms the truck backfires and looses power. Sometimes it wont pass 3000 rpm it just stays there and backfire and have no power. Sometimes the check engine light flashes...... I took the coils off and looked at them and they all looked pretty clean. Also the truck idles rough and sometimes when it cruising at low rpms, and I give it a little gas the truck will randomly misfire and shake hard. also the engine sounds like a diesel engine........ What might be wrong.
View 6 RepliesI have a 2006 Ford F150, king ranch, 4x4, super crew 135k miles. I bought the truck and shortly after noticed the miss under a load at 40-60 mph while in OD, or at higher RPMs at WOT, but never a CEL. Well 3 months went by and I couldn't take it anymore so with lots of research I decided to change the plugs. Ran seafoam through 2 tanks of fuel prior to this job to break up the carbon in hopes of none of the plugs breaking.
All 8 plugs came out with no issue and I replaced them with the Motocraft SP 515s (old ones were very nasty and brittle, most likely the original). I put copper anti seize on the end that goes through the channel in the head, however none got on the end near the electrode, and also on the threads. Put it all back together and it had the worse misfire an pretty much not drivable....flashing CEL and codes p0308, p0355, p0356. So I decided to buy 8 new coils as well, got all 8 of them on and now the truck is drivable but the miss is still there (no CEL).
Feels like maybe just one cylinder and I believe I got it pin pointed to cylinder 8. I put a vacuum gauge on it and unplugged the injectors 1 at a time and cylinder 8 is the only one that there is no change while unplugged. So I switched out the coil thinking maybe I got a bad one, still does it. My COP electrical plug has 12v Constant and also confirmed with an led it is getting signal. The injector is ticking or pulsing as i confirmed with a mechanic stethoscope. What am I missing????? Today when I get off I plan pulling the spark plug, checking for carbon tracking, check compression, check actual visual spark, and pull and clean the injector.
