I just had a leaking transmission seal replaced and I was told by the mechanic that the Freestyle was notorious for leaking. Is that correct?? Will this car need lots of repairs if I keep it.
View 5 RepliesWhen the truck set's for a couple weeks the tranny leaks a preety good size spot on the floor, as long as its driven every couple days not 1 drop. I know the is converter drain back but what seal or O-ring is causing this?
View 2 RepliesI've got an E4OD trans out of my 1994 F150 4x4. It has 145,000 miles on it. The reason why it came out was because the front seal was leaking terrible. Also the electrical connector for the transmission melted and there is a hole right there now. Other than that the trans shifted fine and worked when I drove it. My question is what can I do with the trans?

I just changed the front seal on my transmission, but its is still leaking as if I never did a thing? Did I miss something or is there something else that could be causing my problem?
I had my truck at the shop today and it was determined that the transfer case front driveshaft seal is leaking and the gasket between the transmission and transfer case has also failed. The shop wants a reasonable amount to fix it but they need the truck for 2-3 days. It doesn't appear to be that difficult of a job to remove the transfer case. Am I missing something? Dropping off the truck and leaving it for a few days is the difficult portion......if they could do it in a day I'd just pay them and be done with it. So my thought was to pull it and just drop it off so they can replace the seals and fix any other issues.
View 1 RepliesI haven't had time to take my truck to the dealer to actually be checked yet but it appears I might have a rear main seal going out from what I can see. I pressure washed the whole underside of my truck the other day and there is fresh oil where the engine connects to the transmission.
My truck is a 2011 with a 2013 engine in it. The truck has 103,900 miles on it. The engine has almost 60,000 miles on it. I have the extended warranty on it which is good. All this truck has to do is last 2 more lousy months and I'll replace it.

I just changed transfer case fluid on my father's F-350 for the first time in 13 years. (over 230k). Removed fill plug first and fluid gushed out of the fill hole unexpectedly. Did not have catch pan ready, so made a mess. I thought it was just over filled form the factory, but too much was coming out to be simple overfill. Almost 2 qt came out of the fill plug.
Did some google search and found many Ford trucks have failed transmission output shaft seal and transmission fluid leaks out to transfer case, causing transfer case to overfill. I am yet to check transmission fluid level, but considering how much came out of it that probably is the case.
Now, how bad of the problem this really is? Will overfilled transfer case cause some serious problem? 4x4 is rarely used (once or twice a year in winter) on this truck and from what I understand transfer case doesn't really do anything in 2WD other than just passing output from transmission through.
There are no fluid leaking outside and repairing the seal would be a too much of work for me.
Also changed rear differential fluid for the first time and I was surprised how clean the fluid was. There were thin layer of black sticky residue (sludge?) covering everything, but the fluid itself looked clean and no visible metal shavings. I guess that is why Ford said it does not require change under normal condition.
I get my oil change at the Toyota dealership instead of Lexus and save quite a bit of money for my 2013 ES350. At the 30k service, Toyota technician said he noticed transmission fluid leaking at the axle seal." I was gonna show Lexus this at some point, or maybe get an oil change there at the 40k service.

View 3 RepliesSo I am on my way home after an honest 8, and I make it a mile down the road and goose the old girl a little off a stop light. Well next thing I know we have smoke rolling out under the hood, well it turns out the "smoke" was r134 refrigerant. The guy that recharged it said that the compressor failed and that its common with retrofits because 134a runs at a higher pressure.
Now I don't need a/c, and I might just leave it as is, but it would be nice to have the old girl working 100%. It also turns out that the front seal of the transmission is leaking, I am debating whether or not to just have the transmission rebuilt. it shifts fine but its gotta come out anyway. Its a 700r4 and the trans guy recommends stronger 3-4 clutches and a shift kit to make the holding pressure higher.
My wife has a 2004 escape v6 (3.0L). The valve cover seal was leaking so I decided, why not change the plugs since I'm already going to have the intake manifold off.
I got down there, replaced the seal (just the front side, didn't want to disassemble something that wasn't broke) and then replaced all 6 plugs and boots (with springs). Fired it up and everything seemed fine. She went to drive to work and the CEL started to flash. I read the code and there were 4 (Don't remember exactly what they were), but it was a combination of things resulting from a misfire in cylinder 4. Since it was one of the front ones. I just pulled the plugged and replaced it hoping I had gotten a dud from the factory. Nope, still doing it.
I didn't take off the fuel lines, just the air intake on the top. I did not change the coils, but everything was running fine before I changed plugs so logic would dictate it is something I did. Only seems to misfire at higher speeds. Also, her battery light randomly comes on, but the battery and alternator test good. This has been happening a while.
I have a leveled out 2006 f150. The issue I am having is i have replaced my rear output seal 3 different times the last time only lasted about 4 months before it started to leak again. What is causing this or how I can fix the problem?
View 3 RepliesI found that my transmission was low on oil but couldn't find a leak. What I did find is that the seal in the transfer case was letting trans fluid transfer into it and then it would leak out the out put seal. I purchased the new seal and gasket and repaired it myself in about 3 hours. I removed the rear drive shaft and removed the front drive shaft from the transfer case alone or you can take it out completely if you want.
Drained transfer case unplugged wiring and one vacuum line. Unbloted from trans and removed using trans jack. The bolts are not the easiest to get to. i used a 3/8 ratchet to break them loose then used a stubby 3/8 to get them out because they are around 2 inches long. Once down I had to jack up the truck to get it out from under it. I removed the old seal and installed new one cleaned everything up and installed with a new gasket.
Well, the ac in my truck has been less than exciting since I've owned it and its time to address it before another trip.
I crawled under last night to explore the Ac clutch air gap and found that the shaft seal is leaking and clutch is grooved pretty bad and covered in oil.
I'm thinking it's time for a compressor, clutch, orifice tube, expansion valve and reciever/dryer. Does that about sum it up? I haven't messed with AC systems much outside of my simple jeep system that was as easy as two seals and recharge in my garage to fix it.
Do I need to flush the lines out? Should I do that at all? Motor craft worth the cost over something like four seasons? Its almost twice the cost but in the end if something goes I'm further downstream after freon etc to charge it and the possible shop charge if I pay to have to done.
I'm in a situation where I may be having to tow my 3500# boat/trailer with my '04 Explorer 4WD (this is well within the max tow limit, per the manual). I have the 4.0L with the 5 spd auto tranny and 3.73ls gears. I've towed the boat a handful of times with this vehicle and had a good experience every time. Now I'm looking at this being my primary towing vehicle, towing once or twice a month in the summer. The car only has 48000 miles on the ticker and is in pristine condition, so mechanically it's sound.
I asked my mechanic what he thought of this arrangement and he hates the Explorers, so he's giving a biased response. Have any of you towed something on a somewhat regular basis with this, or a similar, vehicle? Any issues? My mechanic keeps going on about the transmission seal blowing when under a heavy load.
2011 F-350 CC, 45k miles... Found out yesterday mine is leaking. Way to early for these issues to pop up.
View 1 RepliesI got a 97 f150 4x4, 4.6 and I had the shop replace the seal 3 times and it's still leaking, the seal where the driveshaft goes into the t case, I call it the slip yoke seal, they said the bushing inside looks good, there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of play in the driveshaft, it doesn't seem to leak a whole lot, I'm about ready to just forget about it and just run it, they put a seal from oreillys in, it seem to be leaking out of the bottom hole on the seal...

I have the hub assembly off. I'm down to the spindle. My old seal came out in pieces. There's either a piece of the old seal or another seal on the back of the spindle.
Are there two seals? This what looks like a seal still on the spindle against the plate on the back...
I noticed the other day after my truck was parked on a bit of a angle there was diff oil from the passenger side on the ground. reading a bit on here i learned the axle seals are way in the front housing close to the front diff. and yesterday driving a heavy load around my front brake driver side got stuck on a bit and over heated and was smoking, couldn't even touch the rim it was so hot. anyway about this axle seal i got the hub off right now but cant seem to pull out the axle assembly through the knuckle but i see i have to pry and most likely wreck that seal. Looking for a link of piuctures or how to replace the axle seals in the housing.

front crank case seal gone bad! what a mess.
Just had my truck in for an oil change at dealership and wanted them to check for oil leak seeing as I started getting drops on my driveway. When I pick up the truck they told me the front crank seal was leaking and possibly the rear main seal. Front was gonna be 650 bucks and the rear was gonna be 1020. Ended up taking truck to local diesel shop and they replaced front crank seal for 300 and said the rear main looked fine. Tech also told me the old seal looked worse than some that came out of engines with 3 times as many miles. 6.4L ...
