Ford Ranger / B-Series :: 1997 - Transmission Not Shifting Down Into First Gear Not Even Manually

Feb 27, 2015

I just had a 97 Ford Ranger with a 3 speed overdrive transmission in my garage that we replaced the transmission because it was not shifting down into first gear, not even manually!. The new transmission is doing the exact same thing as the original.

Ford Ranger / B-Series :: 2001 - Delayed Shifting From 1st To 2nd Gear?

Brother in law has the above truck with shifting problem. On a cold start, pulling out of the driveway, it will get to about 3-4000 rpm and will slam into gear. Sometimes its worse than others, but is consistant. Once it warms up, the problem goes away for the most part.

I've researched a little online and have found a few people mention the 1-2 shift accumulator (servo...?) and was wondering if any of you have ran into this or have replaced one on the A4LD.

And if you have, which servo is the 1-2 shift? I think there are 6 of the little suckers in there. Anyway, all i've done so far is fluid and filter. Old fluid looked/smelled fine.

Ford Ranger / B-Series :: 1996 Automatic Transmission Not Shifting - No Reverse / Drive Or OD

So here in Wisconsin for the last two weeks we have had nothing but ice. That being said, I have a '96 ranger 3.0L, automatic transmission, 4x4. 4 wheel is inoperable at the moment, that's a different story. Here's my question: with the ice, there has been a lot of tire spinning at high RPM's, the other day, I was again stuck on the ice and rocked back and forth had some pushers, thought we were getting somewhere but I went to shift gears and all of a sudden had nothing. No Reverse, Drive, OD, L, 2. Did I blow my tranny? There was no noise or grinding, but the OD light seems to blink. Is there something I can check or look at?

Ford 6.7L Power Stroke Diesel :: Manually Shifting 6R140 Transmission

I was reading yesterday where someone was wishing for a tuner that would allow you to skip 1st gear. I realized today that you can do that in Manual mode and was even surprised to find out that it would even let you start in 3rd. Driving around without a load, 1st gear does seem a bit of a nuisance. You can't really get on the throttle until you get 2nd! Playing around with it a bit, starting in 2nd, and even 3rd around town was really nice and I didn't miss the shifts. The other thing I noticed that when in manual, it will down shift based on speed, but not throttle position, so if you're going fast enough, it will maintain that gear without downshifting as you apply more throttle. I'm assuming that Ford put some thought into this and won't let you shift in a manner that will cause damage. It would be nice, however, if it would bypass 1st if not in Tow/Haul mode and not make you do the manual shift thing.

Ford Ranger / B-Series :: Transmission Adjustment / Rough Downshift Into 2nd Gear About 15 Or 16 Mph

My 93' Ranger XLT extra cab 2wd, 4.0 engine and A4LD auto tranny with 126,600 miles has a rough downshift into 2nd gear about 15 or 16 mph. Down shift to 1st is real smooth and upshifting thru the gears is smooth. I just put a new modulator valve on it and upshifts smooth out, they were getting to be hard shifts before changing that valve. I do not know if there is any adjustment that can be made to smooth out the rough downshift when slowing down to a stop for red light. The U-joins are in good shape and new carrier bearing assembly on driveshaft and no extra play in the rear end. A band adjustment maybe or just have to live with it.

Ford Ranger / B-Series :: Reverse Gear Went Out - Transmission Repaired But No Power

The reverse gear went out in my 97 ford ranger with automatic transmission. I took the transmission out and replaced the reverse band, cleaned everything up, put it all back together and back in and filled it up with fluid. Unfortunately, between me and my assistant, we did not secure the pump correctly and sheared the ears off it. It made a racket when we started it. It would go through all gears while jacked up but when on the ground it had no power. It would barely move. And there was no fluid coming through the pump when I cracked the lines. We pulled it all out again, took it to a shop, put on a new pump and had them reassemble it all and we put it back in, making sure to do it right this time. But I still don't have the power I had before all this. It's very sluggish in all gears. There was no racket on start up this time. And when I crack the lines there is intermittent fluid loss but not a constant flow. I really don't want to pull this thing again. What am I doing wrong?

Ford Ranger / B-Series :: Transmission Abruptly Locked Up In Traffic In 5th Gear

1991 Ranger, standard cab, 2wd, 2.3L engine, 5 speed

Transmission abruptly locked up in traffic, in 5th gear, brought the truck to a halt. Got it towed home, searched the forum for information on how to remove the transmission, and tackled the task today. I've done transmissions and clutches before - how hard can this be?

Well, I've gotten everything loose and am ready to brace the trans and remove the cross brace to gain access to the top bolts - I have seen them, but haven't tried to reach them. I've been hung for about the last 3 hours trying to get the two top side bolts - heads facing forward. I can feel them, have gotten a socket on them, but have NOT been able to get a wrench up to them to break them loose. Feels like there is a reinforcing flange or something right adjacent that prevents access. I've tried extensions, flex joints and box ends - I just can't seem to find the right combination.

2nd question - do I need to break the exhaust system loose before I allow the engine/transmission assembly to tilt downwards? Looks to me like it needs to be disconnected to allow the assembly to drop.

Ford Ranger / B-Series :: 1997 4X4 - Gear Selector Adjustment

My buddy has a 97 Ranger 4X4 Automatic. The gear selector has become out of adjustment. To get the truck started you have to pull up on it (the gear selector) and it is getting worse by the drive. I think it is going to leave him stranded in the near future if it is not bought back in to adjustment.

Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: Transmission Seems To Be Sliding Or Shifting Backwards When Takeoff In 1st Gear

I have a M5OD that I replaced the clutch in in my '99 150 4wd in December . Manual Tranny. Now when taking off in 1st gear the transmission seems to be sliding or shifting backwards, but only in first gear. Got under my truck and looked, can't find any identifying marks to where it might be moving or what is causing this. All frame mounts are tight and the bell housing is flush with the motor. Yes, i did do the clutch change myself in shop class.

Ford Ranger / B-Series :: Transmission Going To Upshift Then Immediately Downshift To The Gear It Just Left

1996' Ranger with 183,000 miles. 2.3 cyl., Automatic, XLT

When I am driving and get to the 35 to 60 mph range, my trucks transmission wants to upshift, then immediately downshift to the gear it just left. It goes back and forth like this till I get where I am going, or after about 10 miles it will stop doing it. I checked the transmission fluid, and it is full and still pink.

I took it to Advanced Auto, and it blew a code of ECL Bank 1 I believe. I looked around the 'net and I think it came out to be the front O2 sensor may be bad/going bad.

Last week while it was warm enough I was driving with the rear window open, and noticed the faint smell of Rotten Eggs (this has been the only time though). Today I drove about 50 miles and basically used a quarter of a tank of gas. I am wondering if the catalytic convertor may also be going bad?

Ford Ranger / B-Series :: Loud Screech / Grind - Transmission Locked In 5th Gear

Last night, on my way home, I suffered a catastrophic transmission failure in my 1991 2.3L 5 speed. Stepped on the clutch on an exit ramp from the freeway and was rewarded by a LOUD screech/grind, a stopped vehicle, and a transmission "locked" in 5th gear. The local HERO service pushed me out of traffic and I got towed home. Looks like a transmission transplant is in my immediate future. So - the question is, what year manual transmissions match up to a 1991 2.3L 4 cylinder, standard cab, 2WD? I need to start searching salvage yards.

Ford Ranger / B-Series :: 1986 - Transmission Overhaul - Hard To Get Clutch Into Gear From Neutral

Rebuild on the Mazda 5 speed transmission. My 1986 Ranger 2.3 Four cylinder has 280,000 miles and the clutch has never been replaced. It's not slipping but I'm having trouble getting it into gear from neutral. Was told that the release springs on the clutch plate have weakened causing the clutch to not release completely so figured it's time to replace it. It's done well the last 280,000 miles. The question I have : overhauling on one of these Mazda trans and how difficult was it. Any special tools required, etc...I see Autozone has a rebuild kit which appears to have bearings, seals and gaskets. Figured while it was out I would go ahead and rebuild it myself if I can. Rebuilt a few engines but never touched a trans.

Ford Ranger / B-Series :: 1997 - Transmission Hesitates / Struggling To Shift Into Gears?

1997 2.3 5 Speed. My poor truck is having a hard time shifting into gears. I have bled the master off the truck with the correct method, bled it on the truck with the hose on the slave method while pushing the pedal and multiple times with no bubbles coming out at all, no leaks, etc.

Here's the breakdown -

- Clutch, slave cylinder and shifter bushings replaced about 3 years ago (everything has less than 7000 miles on it)

- While driving and pushing in the clutch, it clearly disengages, although quite a ways down.

- Only shifts hard while running. If I sit with it off with the clutch in, I can shift through all the gears with no effort whatsoever. At times while driving, it gets so hard to shift that it may become dangerous.

- Only things I haven't replaced are the master cylinder and the flywheel.

Should I just assume a bad master and just replace it? It's the original with 188,200 miles on it.

Forgot to mention there are times that when I am at a standstill trying to go into reverse, it grinds like the transmission is still engaged.

Ford Ranger / B-Series :: O/D Shifting In And Out At Speeds Over 50 MPH

My o/d has started shifting in and out at speeds over 50mph. It looks like it happens for the tiniest changes in engine loading. A windy day plays havoc and mild inclines. Sometimes the o/d light starts blinking until I switch off then operates normally. Extended warm-up driving seems to work. I've been told the rear axle speed sensor may be going bad but I have no confidence in the advice. I am driving an '02 ranger, 3L flex fuel, 2wd and just went over 100k. The atf is at the correct level but the fluid needs changing in my opinion. There are no engine codes.

Ford Transmission :: 2000 F150 - Transmission Holding 2nd Gear Too Long Before Shifting Into 3rd

I have a 2000 F150 5.4L with 157k miles on it. I think it has the 4r70w trans. The transmission has started holding 2nd gear too long before shifting into third. Throttle position doesn't matter, it does it even under light throttle. I do not have a check engine light. I have owned the truck since new and the trans fluid has been changed 3 or 4 times. The fluid looks pretty good now, not burnt or anything. The truck has been sitting in the garage a lot over the past 2 years, I drive it at least once a month and have put maybe 2000 miles on it this year. It shifts fine through the other gears, just 2-3 has an issue. Truck has the towing package.

Ford Ranger / B-Series :: 2001 - Rough Shifting Going From 2 To 3 And 3 To 4

I have a 2001 Ranger edge edition with extended cab, 3.0L engine, auto tranny (I believe it is a 5R55E) with 95000 miles. I am currently having some rough shift problems going from 2 to 3 and 3 to 4. I had the transmission fluid exchanged and it solved the issue a little bit but it hasn't gone away. It seems to rev up a little then shift real rough. I have read hundreds of threads that talk about the Valve body gasket blowing out on these trucks so I was wondering if this description matches that fix (The OD light does not flash when this happens).

I had to have the PCM replaced right after I bought it to get the emissions to pass (codes wouldn't set) and in the process cleaned all my ABS sensors, replaced my Speed sensor on the rear differential and replaced both rotors.Are there some home diagnostics I can do to narrow down my search for the problem? Also, on a different note, my father has an 03 with the 4.0L SOHC in it and it seems to get a heck of a lot more get up and go. I understand it is a larger better engine but what I am experiencing seems very sluggish for any V6. Could they be related? Might it just be a fuel filter?

Ford Ranger / B-Series :: 2006 - Intermittent Shifting Out 2 - 3

My 2.3L Ranger experiences a drawn out 2-3 shift but only does it once in a while. On my drive to work it might do it at 1 of 10 stop/go and the other times it's perfect. It really seams to do it more when it's cold???? I know it's an electronic shift trans so my guess is because it's intermittent it's getting a false signal from somewhere - maybe? All of the other shifts are fine, it just happens 2-3. It has the correct fluid in the trans and is new.
