Ford Ranger / B-Series :: 1999 - Won't Start - No Engine Light While Cranking?

Dec 13, 2012

My 99 b2500 4 cly shut off on the road this morning and now will not start. She'll turn over just fine but no sputtering or almost-starting. The engine light isn't on when i try to crank it. Any deductive checklist so i can start narrowing down the problem?

Ford Ranger / B-Series :: 1999 - Cranks But Won't Start?

Ok, went out last night to go over to a buddies place to watch some football. Tried to start my truck but all that happened is that it would turn over, but not start. Had plenty of juice in the battery, and 1/2 tank of gas. It acted like it wanted to start, but nothing doing - just keeps cranking and cranking. Its even more frustrating because I was driving it around most of the day before this happened.

Here's the dillema: Its been doing this for the past two months now on and off. Once I fix something, it runs for about a month, and then it starts doing this again, without any warning signs (i.e. multiple cranks before a start, stalling, hesitation on accel., etc.). At this point I'm clueless. I've replaced the fuel filter, fuel pump, and air filter, but the problem has resurfaced again.

An interesting thing to note is that the only ways I'm able to get it started when it starts doing this is to remove the electrical connection from the intertia switch, and crank the engine a few times to relieve the fuel system pressure. After reconnecting the inertia switch, the truck starts instantly.

So whats the deal? Why this would work, and why suddenly the thing would not start after weeks and weeks of driving flawlessly? Is it possible that my system is either too pressurized or losing pressure somehow, and that is how it be able to start? A buddy suggested it might be injectors, but I'm not so sure, because there is no hesitation on accel or performance loss, or even a rough idle.

Ford Ranger / B-Series :: 1999 2.0 - Cranks But Won't Start

My 1999 Ranger that I bought used has been serving me well. However, two days ago I went to visit a friend and when I tried to start the truck to go home, the engine cranked but would not fire. I assumed that perhaps I had flooded the engine, so I walked home. I went back an hour later and the truck started up immediately. Then, yesterday, the truck would not fire at all. I towed it to AutoZone to check for error codes, but none were found. I put my inductive timing light on a plug wire and found that there was no spark.

In one instance of cranking, the timing light blinked and the engine tried to fire, but then nothing. The AutoZone man suggested changing the crankshaft and camshaft sensors. I haven't done that yet, but that is my next plan. Can the Ford dealer find error codes that tell what is preventing an engine from starting that AutoZone can't see? For sure there is no spark, but maybe there is no fuel either since I don't smell gas after much cranking. Could it be the inertia switch cutting off both fuel and spark?

Ford Ranger / B-Series :: 1994 - Engine Cranks But Won't Start

My kid is using my 94 Ranger with 215,000 miles. It quit while he was on his way to work. Engine cranks but won't start.

Fuel pressure at rail was 12 psi (Key on eng. off). I replaced fuel pump. Pressure at rail up to 20 psi. Still cranks, no start.

I replaced fuel filter. Pressure at rail up to 30 psi. Still cranks, no start.

Replaced distributor cap/rotor and plugs. I have spark at plugs.

Chiltons from 1994 doesn't list a rail fuel pressure. I see new fuel pressure regulators are set at 41 psi. I pulled mine and hooked air to it. It (FPR) cracks at 37 psi. I have lots of flow returning to tank, so I assume the fuel system is working correctly. I've never replaced the timing chain/sprockets. Distributor rotor spins during engine cranking. When I rotate the crank pulley to 0 Top Dead Center the rotor is pointing to #1 on the distributor, so I don't think the timing chain has skipped a tooth on the sprocket??????

Ford Ranger / B-Series :: ABS Light Comes On Every Time Start And Drive Less Than 100 Yards

I have a 2000 4wd Ranger with rear anti-lock brakes. The ABS light comes on every time I start and drive less than 100yds. It stays on until you shut the truck off. I found the test plug, and followed procedures to get the codes, but the ABS light won't flash at all. I checked fluid level and fuses. I replaced the rear sensor about a year ago, when that went I lost speedometer and OD off light stayed on. I wouldn't rule the sensor out, but I'd like to get codes. To get codes I grounded the Black/Orange wire with the key in Run position.

Ford Ranger / B-Series :: Engine Light Comes On For A Few Days Then Goes Off?

I have an intermittent problem with the check engine light. While driving in town once in a while the truck runs rough for just a short time. Then the check engine light comes on for a few days then goes off. The truck runs just fine after the rough 2 minutes but the light stays on. I checked the gas cap and it's ok. I changed gas stations but no difference. Sometimes it happens then doesn't happen for another 2 weeks.

Ford Ranger / B-Series :: Running The Engine For AC - ABS Light Came On

So I'm sitting in my 99 2.5L at work while we are empty, running the engine for A/C because it's quite hot out. The truck was running for a half an hour or so, not moving, and I look up from my phone at my dash, to see a brand new ABS light on....

So I've pulled out my handy code reader, but no ABS codes have arrived. Maybe my reader can't read it, or maybe I need to drive. But what could this be? And is it safe to drive the truck home tonight? Pedal pressure still feels normal.

Ford Ranger / B-Series :: 1999 - Hesitates To Start And Won't Run In Morning?

I have a 1999 Ford Ranger and every morning when I go out to start it, it really hesitates and doesn't want to run for a few minutes. once it's going it's fine I can shut it right off and it starts fine, and I can leave it all day from 9am to 6pm and start it again at 6pm and it doesn't hesitate, it fires right up.. it seems like it only happens over night..

When I hooked the code reader up, I get codes P0171 (too lean bank one) & P0174 (too lean bank two)

I also get for the I/M readiness status, that the

EVAP - NOT RDY,
O2S - NOT RDY,
HO2S - NOT RDY

Just want to say also that the shop I had put 2 oxygen sensors in not long ago.=

Ford Ranger / B-Series :: 2003 - Engine Knock On Cold Start

Specs: 2003 Ranger Edge / 3.0 V6 / 5-speed 4WD / 238,000 miles

Yesterday my truck was in the shop for repair. Intake gasket, Transmission fluid change, all heater hoses, thermostat, serp belt and coolant flush. When I picked it up from the shop, which was after closing, I noticed a knocking on start up. From past experience on a different truck, it sounds like a cam that isn't oiling. After a few minutes the knock goes away. I drove for a few miles, turned off the engine and started it back up and no knock this time. This morning I started it, knock was back but went away after a few minutes. Oil was changed about 1500 miles ago. Running pennzoil 5/20 with a K&N filter. Up until yesterday the engine has been completely quiet. Was wonder if something may have clogged the filter or the drain back valve.

Ford Ranger / B-Series :: 1998 4.0L Manual Won't Shift As Soon As Start The Engine

I'm 1200 miles from home living in a hotel right now. Was on my way to the store this morning and I took it out of gear. When to put it back in, and it wouldn't go in. Fortunately, I was still moving, so I coasted off into a parking lot. Once I shut the engine off, it went right into gear. It moves freely through them all. As soon as I start the engine, it won't shift. It is not my clutch. I can start the engine with it in gear and the clutch in, and it won't creep at all (was sitting on level ground when I tried). At least this means I can get it places if I slip the clutch a lot. Took the inspection cover off, and all looks well in there. It hasn't been acting strange. It shifted just fine right up until this. No strange noises either until now.

Now there is a slight squeaking sound if I try to force it into gear with our without the clutch pushed in. Since I've never let a mechanic touch my baby before, and I have to now, what possible things should I be looking for to make sure they are honest? I'm thinking maybe I killed my pilot bearing? Second, while its apart, I'm going to have them replace the clutch and slave cylinder since its got 160K on it and as far as I know, the previous owners never did that. Recommendations on what clutch to get? Its been towing some lately. I don't know if that makes a difference.

Ford Ranger / B-Series :: 2000 Truck Won't Start / Theft Light Blinks

I just bought a 2000 Ranger. I bought it at company auction for cheap because it wouldn't start. The battery was dead when I got to it. I put a brand new battery in it since it has 155,000 miles. When you turn the key to the on position, the theft light starts blinking rapidly. It will continue to do so for about 45 seconds if you leave the key on; then it will go out. However, if you turn the key to start, all you hear is relays clicking. The engine doesn't crank at all. I jumped the starter relay and the engine turns over. I have the factory manuals for wiring diagrams and diagnostic procedures.

The theft system relies on trouble codes to point you in the right direction for testing. I borrowed an Actron code reader (like you get at Autozone) and it says there are no codes. I'm wondering, though, if it only reads the SAE standard codes from any vehicle and not the manufacturer specific codes like the theft system. I have gone through a few of the diagnostic procedures with a multimeter, but it's like looking for a needle in a haystack without the codes. So far everything I've checked has come back ok. Any common issues this might be related to? BTW, I've gotten bits and pieces of info about this truck from the guys who drove it. Apparently, it just wouldn't start one day and was parked for the next several months until I bought it.
