My rear brakes on my 20th are warped and are squeaking like crazy when i come to a stop. I've never had to look at brakes so I don't know what to look for. What are some good replacement rotors /pads for the rear. I just use the car for daily driving nothing crazy.....
View 5 RepliesI just replaced my front brake pads and rotors. Car had no squeaking sounds before this. When changing the right front pads and rotor, the set screw that holds the rotor in place snapped on me when I tried to remove it. I drilled out the remaining screw and inserted an easy out / screw extractor to try to remove the broken screw. Screw wouldn't turn/budge and eventually the easy out snapped in half while trying to turn it. Here is where I fear I made a little problem into an even bigger one; I tried to remove the broken easy out by banging the back end (smaller end) of it with a hammer and screwdriver, hoping it would pop out from the front of the hub. No success, and continued using a lot of force to try to remove it from the rear part of the hub. Eventually I noticed the hub area by the back of the easy out bent a little from me using force from the rear to remove the easy out. I stopped there, bent the hub section back to original shape (didn't bend too much to begin with) and sawzawed off the protruding end of the easy out from behind.
After driving a few times I started noticing the squeaking sound coming from the front right wheel, the sound sounds like is in tune/harmony with the wheel rotation. As soon I step on the brakes, the sound stops. I had a similar sounding problem with a rear wheel a long time ago and it ended up being that the bearing needed adjustment. I know the front bearings are pressed in so they can't be adjusted. I am thinking the force used to try to remove the broken easy out damaged something with the hub or bearing or maybe the axle nut.
I took my car in about three months ago when brake indicator started squeaking in the rear. Shop told me that the drums, shoes and wheel cylinders needed replacing. After spending a few hundred replacing all those parts, the squeaking began. It's a kind of rhythmic squeak that starts towards the end of braking. the rate varies with the speed of the car, so it definitely seems to be coming from the brakes. I took it in not long after. They said they only heard a clicking noise, and that was because the brakes were mis-adjusted. They re-adjusted it. I drove it home. The squeaking is still there. This also happens a lot more when it's heated up so maybe that's why they didn't hear it in the first place.
I take the car back. They said the drum has been warped. They replace the drums. I take it home. Still squeaking a few days later, and I feel the brake pedal pulsating now. I take it back in. They say the issue is from the front brake rotors being warped. I get these replaced elsewhere with ceramic pads. Squeaking is still there.
I take it back in to the original shop because I'm certain it's from the rear. They look at it again and say the drums are warped, again, and that they'd never seen anything like it. They turn the drums. (and receipt says there will be no more warranty on the rear drums... what?)
Unsurprisingly, squeaking did not stop, not even the day after. I took it to a different shop. They spent all day on it and drove it around with me and their final word is that the reason for the squeaking is cheap parts. They recommended I call the original shop and ask for factory parts and offer to pay the difference for the parts.
I have recently replaced my stock pads with pbr ceramics,front and rear. now my rear brakes are squeeling loud everytime i back up. i have tried to file the edges, did not work. What to do? change pads?

View 17 RepliesI just picked up a BMP 20th ann last weekend after looking for a nice clean one for a while. I love the way the car looks compared to my stock 1.8t gti, and I am also loving the Recaro seats. The 20th is all stock, and i have a few minor things in mind for it just to get the car to look how i want. I also had a few questions... do tires rub against the front when turning sharply? The car has stock suspension... also the front lip has a small crack and i was wondering if it was worth it to get it fixed or to buy a new one? And there is an annoying squeaking sound coming from the steering column area...

When I am backing up (in reverse or just rolling) I hear a subtle squeaking noise, it sounds to be coming from the back wheels but im not sure. i dont know what the noise is? and it is driving me insane.
View 7 RepliesSo your clutch pedal operates properly, the clutch engages with no issues, but this annoying squeak, snap, crackle, and pop noise keeps coming from the clutch pedal within the cabin.
Could it be your clutch master cylinder? CMC is not leaking in the engine bay and the driver footwell. Not the CMC.
Could it be your clutch switch that's used to control revs and cruise control? Removed it and clutch pedal still made noises when pressing and releasing the pedal. Not the CS.
Could it be the over-center spring that sits behind the clutch pedal assembly? How could it be? It's just a spring. Springs that compress in that orientation don't make snap, crackle, and pop noises.
What most people fail to realize is the noise is coming from the pedal assembly, but it's not the pedal structure or the pedal. It's the pivot point where it mates with the clutch pedal mounting bracket. At the pivot point are two bushings (one on each side of the pedal structure) that wears out over time creating these noises.
Please look up the part number for these bushings. They look like the following at this link but these are aftermarket upgrades for BMW's.[URL] ....

View 3 RepliesI have just purchase a used one 2 weeks ago. I bought it from a local dealer (Longo Toyota). After I got the car home for a day it started to make noises when i brake. If the brake pedal is depress about half way it will make a squeaking noise when it comes to a stop. So i bought the car back in to the dealer and all they did was flush the system and reboted the computer. They said this is normal for some pruis to make a noise when the vehicle comes to a stop and it should not be a safety concern.
View 19 RepliesI have a 2007 Chevy HHR. A couple of weeks ago I had to change the caliper on the driver's side of the car. I had some squeaking after, but bled the brakes and the squeaking went away. The other day I took the caliper off and painted it. I have custom wheels and you can see the caliper plainly, it was rusted so I painted it. Now I am getting the squeaking again, but it stops when I apply the brakes. I bled them again, but still the squeaking. This is driving me crazy. Could it be the "chirper" that is dragging on the rotor? Also I want to add, it squeaks until I get up to about 45 mph. Then it stops. And as I said, it stops when I apply the brakes.

View 2 RepliesMy brakes sometimes feel like the rotors are warped. The problem is that it isn't consistent. I remember how the original rotors warped and they were crap so I put some drilled and slotted rotors on about 150,000 miles ago. Currently but not all of the time it acts like the current rotors are warped, the steering wheel will move back and forth, feel the shake in the vehicle. But today running a few errands at lunch, there was no wobble etc. I might go ahead and replace the rotors/pads but want to be sure that is the issue. Could it be the hydroboost on the 7.3? ABS?
View 6 RepliesI have a 2005 GLI tip-tronic. Bought used but the brakes are not that great. I know what the brakes should feel like since I did a swap for them on my GTI. I'm done brake pads /flush and cycled the abs pump to try an fix it. However on this car when I press the brakes I can here a humming/ buzzing noise. I'm assuming it the brake assist pump. Can this be eliminated or does it have to be replaced. The car stops just not all that great for it having the type of brakes it has.
View 1 RepliesI've got a clicking in my car right now, it's not a constant noise, but only after I've been driving awhile without using my brakes. Slowly gets louder and louder. Goes away completely when I put my brakes on for a second and starts again when I let off of the brakes. Its speed related, so its quicker when I'm going faster.
View 1 RepliesCar was running fine on friday when I left for detroit, it sat in my driveway all weekend, but on the way to work this morning I get a warning light to STOP and my temp gauge is right below 260. It took about 10 miles for the light to come on and the car does NOT overheat while idling. The car is only at 52k and I have not replaced the water pump/timing belt yet.
View 13 Repliesso, I'm driving home the other day in stop and go 102 degree traffic, and my A/C cuts out. I thought maybe my compressor took a dump, because I've noticed a little noise from that side of the engine. Then I look down, and notice my water temp is like 240-250ish. As soon as traffic starts up again, temp goes down to normal, and A/C comes back.
I have a 2 mile commute to work, so it hasn't happened since then.
no DTC's, no rad fan. A/C fan works. Put 12V to fan - no worky. fuse block on top of battery not melted.
Obviously I need a fan, but I was wondering about something else. since this started, my car gets to normal operating temp (NOT), in literally under 2-3 minutes. I know its Texas and a billion million degrees, but I think that's too fast.
Green top coolant temp sensor, and metal impeller water pump already installed.
So originally I was told it was my front brakes going bad, which was the case. To address the issue, I replaced the rotors and pads awhile back and the noise disappeared for a bit. Fast forward a month or so ago and I hear an on-and-off squeaking noise when the brakes are applied. It does not happen every time. Usually when I ease onto the brakes to a slow stop.
Figuring it could be my pads going bad for whatever reason, I decided to check my brake pads and rotors again. No odd signs of damage on the rotors and by the looks of it there was still plenty of pad left. I then sprayed some brake clean assuming it could be dust but there wasn't much.
I have not touched the drums yet but I'm thinking it could possibly be the drums or a bad bearing? The car is a 2012 with 38k miles which is the reason I'm doubtful of it being a bad wheel bearing. What could it be?

I have some new rotors and pads picked out, but i dont know if i have the Bosch or the Girling rear calipers...
Every time I slightly touch my brakes while in reverse, they screech loud enough to wake a whole neighborhood. Did I purchase wrong set of pads or is this common, ive asked around and no one can figure it out. It only happens while I press them in reverse...
View 3 RepliesSo I recently swapped out my cabin air filter, no other major changes or issues... but ever since I noticed that when I'm in neutral or at a stop, I can start to smell the faint odor of exhaust fumes. No CELs and it's not coming from the gas tank area like I know some have experienced - only from the vents. It's noticeable to me, but nothing unbearable by any means. I definitely never had this before - and my old filter was really dirty so not sure why a new one would give me any issues of have anything but BETTER air quality. I notice that I can curb the smell by pushing the circulate air button, effectively shutting off any outside air from coming in.
