Ever since day 1, I noticed my wife's 2011 TDI/DSG make clattering/rattling noise during low gear changes (1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd gear), it sounded like a diesel engine's clattering/clicking but a little louder at gear changes. I mentioned it to the dealer at 3month/3k checkup and they test drove and say it's normal. Is it really normal?
View 6 RepliesRecently purchased a brand new 2013 R. With ZERO mods on it and 5,000 miles, I flashed the car to UM Stage 1. Immediately after flash I get a noise that sounds like a metal clattering in first and second gear from about 2K to full boost. Happens most audibly when the car is cold but is subtly ever present when heated up.
When the noise occurs I feel as if I'm getting half boost or a very inconsistent boost curve. The boost then kicks in after the 3,500k(ish) threshold. On rare occasions, the car will warm up and run exactly as I would expect it too. 1st, 2nd, 3rd all boost very evenly and strong from 0k and beyond with no noise and the car is amazing to drive.
To try and diagnose the issue, I flashed it back to stock and the noise disappears though I can still feel it not boosting consistently. I took it to the dealer (stock) and they said the didn't notice or couldn't hear anything which was what I expected. I'm guessing it is something the with wastegate but I don't know enough to say with any confidence.
I was playing with the paddle shifters while driving home and went into too high of a gear for my speed (I think 4th gear at only 20mph, 1000rpm). When I gave it some gas, I noticed a clattering/rattling sound coming from under the hood, along with the usual low growl/bogging you'd expect for being in too high of a gear. I quickly downshifted and the rattle went away and the car accelerated as normal.
Is this reason for concern? I only noticed this because I had my windows rolled down but worry I might accidentally damage something if I don't hear it or not pay attention.
Having this rattling/clattering noise at start up? Mine is starting to become more and more common... (54k miles).
View 11 RepliesThe belly pan on my AUDI A4 is loose and causing a clattering, rattling noise. I looked under the car and it looks like all of the screws are missing..... Can I fix this myself?
I saw that a lot of places online sell the screws but pricing was a bit confusing and I wanted to make sure it's something I can fix myself.
My 2010 GTI, which I bought in April of this year, has begun to rattle, mainly coming from the back part of the vehicle. I have taken it twice to the local dealer and of course this rattle mytsteriously goes away when they take it out on a road test.
One rattle area seems to be coming from the sunglass holder (sidenote: why the hell would they design them so bloody small? I mean, they barely hold any kind of sunglasses), but the main rattle is definitely coming from the back, possibly trunk area.
This is my first VW and I have been told the nature of a VW in the winter is that it rattles.
I have a 2006 Ford F250 super duty kingcab 6.0 with 6 speed manual transmission. It just started making a clattering sound when i let off the gas in 1, 2, 3 gear but not in 4, OD, in Neutral with or without clutch engaged or at idle. U joints and carrier bearing are good. I took it to a mechanic and he said it was the throw out bearing but the sound goes away when clutch is engaged?
View 7 RepliesThis car is by far the most rattling thing on wheels i have ever experienced. i for one do not classify it as poor fit and finish, because as you look the interior over i think it has excellent fit and finish. however, it does not like to be disturbed. I have the flying bridge area rattling both left and right sides of the dash, the back hatch area. it truly "feels" like i'm driving a pos. just truly disappointed in Toyota. I guess that is how powerful this car is in knowing the mpg return I get out of it.
View 19 RepliesThe sunglasses holder on my GTI 2011 was rattling for years. I saw many other people complained about the issue and some even had fixed it themselves. The dealership obviously couldn't work... I was finally able to fix mine today....
In my case it rattled usually on low RPM as I'm accelerating and both with or without sunglasses inside. The radio had no effect. I found that pressing on the right side of the sunglasses holder would stop the rattling, but as soon as I let go it started back up.
I tried a few things and I even took out the entire unit using this guide, but it didn't work.
What did work was adding padding on the right rim of the pop-out drawer itself. The left rim of the drawer has a little bar that prevents any movement there. The right rim doesn't. Adding some padding on the right rim to prevent movement on that side solved the issue for me. I used some tape for the padding.
Ok so lately I noticed a horrific rattling coming from the rear of my car. It happens mostly when I'm in a high gear going slow with a load on the gear. It's sort of like the rattle that comes from the exhaust with the same gear load but it's much looser and rattley sounding, and it doesn't always do it. It almost sounds like a piece of sheet metal in my spare tire well rattling when there's a gear load and the exhaust rattles. But I checked in there and it seems tight.
View 5 RepliesI have an 2011 rx350 that had a cracked windshield. I got it replaced and ever since there has been a rattling down by the dash/windshield at the drivers side. Now the guys that installed it are very nice and have actually looked at it 3 times since but still nothing to negate the noise. I tried sticking a rag down between the dash and the glass but it hasn't totally gone away. It does appear to be worse in colder weather or when the car hasn't fully warmed up.

At around 35,000 miles, after an oil change at a dealership my 2011 Prius had a loud rattle while driving on a famous grade in my county called "Waldo Grade". It may be known as "Robin Williams' Tunnel". There was a loud rattle that occurred from the rear of the car and goes away on the flats. I brought it into a Hybrid Shop and the proprietor drove it for a day and reported that he could not duplicate the sound.
The noise has since disappeared and now I have 39,000 miles on the car. My neighbor had the same problem with his 2015 Prius: around 35,000 miles, after an oil change at his dealership, loud rattle and banging near his rear brakes. But his rattle occurred while braking down the San Francisco hills in the rain. My neighbor brought his car to his dealership and with this complaint and they reported that their driver was unable to duplicate the condition. He's waiting for another rainy day in San Francisco but it's unlikely that it will be soon. Is there any connection to the similar miles or oil changes?
I have a 2011 Sonata SE 2.4 In the last week Ive noticed a noise what sounds like my valves are rattling or maybe even a bad lifter. This only happens when I bring the RPM's up to 2500-3000. Not at idol or normal driving when RPM's are around 2000 or lower. Its getting progressively louder every couple of days. I've ruled out bad gas (I used another station in another city on last fill up ). My oil is changed every 3000-4000 miles with the recommended oil as well.

I understand this is the interlock feature, however, I do not recall feeling this before. I also thought it only activated while in park, but I could be wrong. Is this normal?
I also am noticing a loud rattling noise coming from the engine bay, behind the speedo, under certain conditions. If I use light throttle, the 1-2 shift produces a loud rattling near 1900rpm.
Tonight while driving I heard a rattling noise under the engine, come to a stop and the engine cuts off. I pop the hood, get a jump and nothing. So I check the oil and it is dry... I changed it 4 months ago myself, it is a mystery how it leaked. No light came on, no oil leaks anywhere..
Is there any hope in having the engine turn over again? If so how should I go about trying to turn it? Engine only has 61000 miles on it.
So, I have discovered my first rattle in my GTI (8500 miles). Seems to be from the underside, sounds like a heat shield rattling, certainly sounds metallic. Did some spirited driving yesterday and hear the rattle today. Any target areas to check when I take a look under it?
View 6 RepliesMy manual 2004 Ford Ranger XLT (4.0L) has been Buzzing/Rattling. (VIDEO LINK BELOW) She has 112k miles on her. Owned 1 month, no issues when I bought from my paps. Its my 1st manual so may have been a little hard on clutch 1st few days. Noise started abruptly 1 week ago when I engaged clutch to shift to 3rd. Its gotten worse over the few days and happens even when in gear. Its much more prominent from outside passenger window. Don't notice for 1st couple mins of driving & is intermittent but often. Noticeably louder when foot is taken off gas in motion. Does not make noise when idling. Generally only above 1500 RPM . Not coming from the back half so I don't think its the exhaust/heatshield

View 13 RepliesI've got a 02 Camry with a manual. In 5th gear, cruising on highway, there's a low grinding/ rattling noise. it doesn't do it if you try to accelerate, or if you have no throttle input at all, meaning it only makes the noise when trying to keep one speed, typically around 2000-2500 rpm. If i grab the shifter and apply pressure in any direction, the noise goes away. I've owned the car for 3 years now and its always done it, and hasn't gotten any worse or changed at all. I'm experiencing no performance issues and just chalked this up to gear noise, but recently read someone else was having same issue, and everyone was clamoring on about needing new bearings.
View 14 RepliesI have a high milage (210K) '07 2.4L which has a slight engine rattling noise at idle RPM at cold and operating temps, in gear or park. It is a fairly constant noise at idle but does vary a little. Otherwise, engine/tranny operate beautifully with no obvious problems.
I am concerned this could be a timing chain/tensioner related issue although I also wonder if it may be some other component. I have not been able to determine the source or location of the sound.
My '06 Nissan Altima suddenly started making a very loud rattling noise as soon as I put it into drive and start moving at low speeds. The noise does not go away at high speeds. It sounds like I am dragging the entire undercarriage. When breaking it grinds very loudly. All of this is sudden. Only other issue I had recently was that the motor wouldn't catch when I tried it Saturday, but it finally did after giving it a good amount of fuel. Drove it 300 miles yesterday without a problem. Woke up to a car that sounds an awful lot like a plane.
