Bought a 2003 golf gti 1.8t as kind of a project. Car had no interior no exhaust and some shifting issues. To fix the shifting issues rather than replacing solenoids I just got a rebuilt valve body. After installation the car still doesn't shift from 1st to second properly and now I don't have reverse. (It's an 09a transmission)
View 1 RepliesWhen backing up in reverse I come to a stop and shift into drive. About 60% of the time it slams into gear (Drive). It feels as if someone rearended me. It's a 2012 Chrysler Town and Country with 40K miles. 2 dealers worked on it, reprogramed the computer and replaced 2 seloniods and the problem is still there. What is wrong but said thats typical on that 6 speed. What to do next?
View 2 RepliesMy 2001 1.8T Jetta doesn't want to shift into 4th (slips in and out) when the operating temp gets to normal value. It looks like I will need a full overhaul. Of course the overhaul price is worth more than than car is worth. I may be able to get a tranny from an 03 Jetta with a 2.0 in it. I think it bolt on but are there any other issues? According to this site the ratios are similar -not sure what R&P is.

I got a 99' Jetta gls 5 spd. I just replaced the transmission and now the car won't engage reverse from inside the cockpit. Reverse can be engage from inside the engine bay, but when the shift knob is depressed nothing happens. Linkag cables are in the correct spots.

View 10 RepliesOver the past few weeks, my car (2002 Golf 2.0L) has gotten really hard to shift into 1st and reverse (has crunched once or twice), but only when the car is hot, after driving it for a little while. When this happens, and I try to shift into reverse, the shifter feels really "sticky" and can get kind of stuck in the depressed position near reverse.
I bled the hydraulic system and replaced the slave cylinder, but no dice. I haven't noticed any clutch slipping. Shop wants to replace the whole clutch. Is this the right answer?
I have a 99 passat w auto and tip it will only go into drive and reverse, the tip does nothing and it starts in 4th gear from a start. It works in reverse but I can move the shift lever into 1st or any other gear and it does nothing it wont down shift or the tip wont do anything I am at a loss, I heard it could be the TCM or a pressure selonoid in the tranny...

If you stick your hand in the engine compartment, push down on the golf club looking linkage and shift it into reverse it goes right in and you are able to back up the car.
So my question is which linkage may need fixing or replacing or adjustment. The shifter linkage in the car? the linkage on the golf club thing or any parts in between.
So my daughter's '04 Jetta SW 2.0 will not upshift and has the engine light on. After having it read by the local shop I have the following codes:
P0743 Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Electrical Malfunction
P0743 Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Electrical Malfunction
P0811 Excessive Clutch Slippage
So what to do? I read a lot about issues about the alleged poorly designed/manufactured stock "Auto Trans Valve Body" and how that seems to be a culprit of shifting issues above 150K.
I just bought a 2007 Santa Fe 3.3ltr with auto trans and all wheel drive. When I purchased it the speedometer did not work. I bought the VSS gear and installed it and now my transmission does not shift properly. Also I had it to the dealership for an ECU update and they said that their computer could not connect to the ECU.
View 2 RepliesI bought a truck a week ago and finally got it running. I got into the truck put it into drive and nothing happened. It is a 59 2wd with an automatic transmission. All the linkages are moving all the way to the transmission. There is a second arm coming out of the transmission in the same spot where it is hooked up now. Should it be hooked up to something? Is the transmission done for?
View 1 RepliesI recently purchased a 2002 Jetta VR6 GLX. It drives fine when the transmission is warm, but fails to go into reverse and has a hard time shifting out of first when it's cold. I took it to my german mechanic friend who specializes in transmissions and he said that both the valve body and transmission need to be replaced. Problem is I don't have the funds to replace both.
The current transmission has 131000 on it.
Okay just got a 1992 honda accord automatic and sometimes when you stop at a light it will downshift to first and take off other times it wont downshift and stay in overdrive on take off...
View 6 RepliesMy 2003 Dodge Dakota does not shift properly sometimes going into second gear and it only happens in second gear. I have to lift my foot off the accelerator for it to shift into third. If I don't it just screams at a high RPM and sounds as if it is about to blow. It has a hard time making it up a small incline such as an off ramp. Truck will not shift properly when going up grade. Engine will rev at 4500-5000 rpm but will not shift until I slightly release the gas pedal. Truck will also perform multiple hard up shifts whether in cruise control or not in cruise control, going upgrade. Took the truck to the dealer reprogrammed the computer with a "flash update" that was no luck. Not once has the ENGINE LIGHT ever come on.
So a lot of the comments that were presented to me I have done. Here is a list:
Changed govner senors and solenoid. Did not work.
Checked for exhaust leaks and other leaks. No leaks.
Checked all vaccuums. No problems there.
Had engine checked and dyno tested. No problems there.
Had transmission rebuilt. Same problem. (dealer did work)
Had new transmission put in. Same problem. (dealer did work)
Also, sometimes when I put the truck in reverse, it seems to about to stall, but it doesn't. It also does it sometimes when I put the truck in drive it seems that it wants to stall.
I just recently learned that my truck has a Transmission computer module, Transfer case computer module and of course the main computer. Is there a way to test those modules out?
I have an 01 Jetta, 2.0L, 5 Speed manual transmission.
The issue seems to be that the shifter wont shift the transmission "all the way" into 1st, 3rd, and 5th gear. When I shift into the gears that are forward on the shifter, it will go into gear, but then the shifter (in the car) moves back toward neutral a little. I can drive in 1st no problem, but in 3rd and 5th some weird stuff happens...
While driving, when I shift from second to third I have to keep my hand on the shifter otherwise I get kicked out of gear. Also, when I drive on the highway, I periodically get kicked out of 5th gear if I don't keep my hand on the shifter (usually, when I let off the gas).
Anyway, being that I've fixed many problems on many cars by searching forums and google, I spent the last few days trying to figure out the problem by looking through the forums, but I have yet to find a solution. I tried adjusting the shift linkage using the method described in the dieselgeek video on youtube [URL] ...., but it didn't work. I'm pretty certain it's not the shifter bushings because i have almost no play in the shifter in neutral.
I had someone cycle through the gears while I watched under the hood, and its clear that the cable that controls the forward and back part of the shifting is not pulling back far enough on the counterweight on the transmission. (When shifting into 1st, 3rd, and 5th.) When the shifter puts the tranny into these gears I can still move the counterweight on the tranny further than the shifter will pull in in the same direction.I tried adjusting the linkage to compensate for this, but the cable is as far into the cable end as it will go...
Have a question when I shift slow from 2nd to 3rd my o2j tranny doesn't grind but when I shift fast from 2nd to 3rd it grinds it happens starting at 3000 Rpms thru 6000 Rpms. It also doesn't happen when I shift from 4th to 3rd. Have performed a tranny fluid change. Along with replacing the clutch at 1500 miles ago. The engine is AWP.
View 4 RepliesGot a 2001 Jetta 2L automatic 200k miles with gremlins. possibly multiple unrelated problems. First problem that presented is that the transmission will occasionally not shift into 4th gear. I discovered that if I stop the engine, then restart it, it will again return to normal operation, hence the thought that it is electrical. After a year or so of this, second problem pops up: the engine will die while the car is driving, or some times idling at a light. I've also noticed that the interior lights flicker somewhat in intensity when on and the engine is operating, so there could definitely be a grounding issue somewhere. I have heard that the ECU/ECM connectors could become corroded, but haven't yet dug into it to look. Any guesses as to where to begin?

View 5 RepliesTook my car in for oil/filter change and in some odd circumstance, the young mechanic managed to drain 1 liter of transmission oil out of my car (which I didn't know at the time). After driving for 10 minutes (~5 km), I noticed my reverse gear wasn't shifting properly. After ~30 minutes of driving, my car was smoking from the exhaust pipe (turns out he had overfilled my engine oil too!!). Took the car back in to complain the mechanic supervisor claims my transmission is still fine and all I need to do is refill the lost fluid. Another independent mechanic later tells me my transmission line is likely fried if I had experienced what I did, and those guys should be responsible to replace everything. Since fluids have been topped up, I have no proof of who is right. So my question is, if I only drove for maximum 50 km after my transmission fluid was drained and engine oil overfilled, would that be enough to cause serious damage to the car?
View 10 RepliesI drive a 2006 Dodge Sprinter, 3500 with dual wheels. When changing from park to drive, the gears would not automatically shift from first to second gear. The engine kept revving, so I stopped the vehicle, and started it again. No problem. I spoke with a retired mechanic (friend of mine's father) and he said we should probably change the transmission fluid. When I called the dealer, he said they could do it but that he also saw problems arise when the fluid was changed on vehicles with high mileage (it has 225,000 miles on it).
Should I go ahead and change the fluid, or not?

Transmission has a hard time going into 1st and reverse. Also some times hits hard going into third. I have a CEL for a vehicle speed sensor? Was wondering if it's not the VSS but maybe one of the other tranny sensors?
Separate question. Same car has a rough idle issue. Occasionally stalls but intermittently runs normal always has a low idle around 600 rpm. I have a code for an injector on cylinder three.
