So I just replaced my clutch. I have a 2001 Gti vr6. It has roughly 120,000 miles and the clutch went out. I ordered a stage 1 clutch and put it in. Everything went smoothly and now I am stumped as to why I can't shift into first, third, and reverse? Second, Fourth, Fifth all work. Why this happened?

I took off the linkage from the engine bay and can only manually get the car to go into reverse ... Feels like it can't change "levels" ... Don't think it's clutch since because the car won't engage a gear even with the car off ...
Tried searching and no luck ... Thinking shift forks but hoping not since don't want to drop the transmission and it could be something else ...
I'm just having a mis-alignment for my gearing reverse is replaced as first and I have no second gear not reverse only 1-3-4-5 gears are being entered what can I do to fix this...
View 2 RepliesDrove my 02 VW golf GL to the airport, it sat there for 4 days, drove it back home. Next day I noticed that my 1st gear and reverse are very hard to get into. So I kept messing around with it and noticed that if I tried to put it slowly into first gear that there was no way in hell it would go, it felt like the gear was closed.
But if I put it into second gear and push it from second gear into first gear it goes back into first gear about 70% of the time. And it will also go into first gear if I push my stick down as if I'm attempting to go into reverse, and slowly move it into 1st gear.
The reverse is also very hard to get into it feels just like the 1st gear does when you try to do it slowly, it's like it's closed off/blocked. Latest work that was done to the car, replaced the clutch about 4-5 months ago.
Automatic 1998 Golf 4 1.8L 20V shakes so badly to a point where the engine stops totally when I put it on reverse,and on drive sometimes. What might be causing this.. I recently replaced the gearbox oil with a new one..the car was fine before this change of gear box oil

Reverse is a bit noisy (more than usual) and when I get on it in 1st and 2nd gear it sounds like an awful whining noise. I have been told it could be either a bad throw out bearing or input bearing? BTW this thing shift perfect, like butter, no grinding at all.
View 4 RepliesI started my car the other day and found that it only drives the first gear and I can also put it in reverse. VCDS gave me a 00281 code saying no signal from Vehicle Speed Sensor G68. I replaced the sensor, but it still doesn't go into gear beyond 1st.
VCDS gives me the following codes after replacing G68.
2 Faults Found:
00652 - Gear Monitoring
27-10 - Implausible Signal - Intermittent
00281 - Vehicle Speed Sensor (G68)
03-00 - No Signal
I came across TSB 01-99-02 which says something about the codes being incorrect. It seemed a little vague about whether it is actually G38 or G22. I don't want to buy more sensors only to have it be something else. The speedometer and tach work fine so G22 doesn't seem likely to me.
The VCDS site says it could be several things including bad G68 or G38 sensor, low fluid & bad valve body. Was it the G38 sensor?
My 01 GTi (12v VR6) was having some trouble shifting into, and out of, first and reverse so after a bit of research I decided to try adjusting the shift linkage as it seemed like a possible easy fix. After doing that I tried backing it up in the driveway and after a couple of shifts to different gears it ended up getting stuck in reverse. When I pushed in the clutch pedal to let it roll forward I noted that it seemed to be resisting rolling forward despite the steep incline. Once it reached a less steep incline it stopped rolling forward completely, so I'm thinking that it probably won't come out of gear because the clutch won't disengage all the way.
I've done some searching around and from what I've read so far it sounds like it could be a worn or damaged clutch fork, the hydraulic lines, master or slave cylinder, or even a broken clutch plate. What I don't want to do is pull the transmission and clutch, only to find that it was something much easier to fix.
2001 VW Jetta 1.8t automatic.
Transmission has a hard time going into 1st and reverse. Also some times hits hard going into third. I have a CEL for a vehicle speed sensor? Was wondering if it's not the VSS but maybe one of the other tranny sensors?
Separate question. Same car has a rough idle issue. Occasionally stalls but intermittently runs normal always has a low idle around 600 rpm. I have a code for an injector on cylinder three.

I have a 2001 vr6 Jetta automatic transmission. When I shift my car from park into to reverse or drive the whole car jerks as if it's banging into gears. But while driving it drives normal. When I stop and accelerate I feel the same jerking you would say.

View 4 RepliesI recently bought a volkswagen jetta 1.8t wolfsburg edition 5speed. While driving i switched from third into fourth gear upon letting the clutch completely out the rpms began to spike and no power was being produced. So I neutralized to the nearest stop and tried shutting my car off and restarting it and then putting it into gear it would not engage in any gear what so ever at all. The clutch then had no pressure or resistance in it when pressing down and lets up slowly.
The motor stilll runs perfectly fine and the actual shifter will move into gears in the gear box but the clutch still has no pressure and doesn't even attempt to catch or engage in any gear. Do i just need to replace the clutch or the intake or the flywheel or what? In addition i have since ran the code runner and nothing comes up besides the intake code but that's because i took the intake off to manually try and engage the clutch into gear witch still did not work.
I just picked up another GTi and knew the transmission was iffy when I bought it. I had to deal with the serpentine belt tensioner which is now new and also a new waterpump since it was wobbling.
I've already drained and replaced whatever oil was in there with VW G60 Gear Oil which is what my Dealer here told me to put in and it shifts smoother now but still has the same issue. I also did the Shifter Cable adjustment to see if that was the problem but that only made it easier to shift but it still got stuck.
Basically what happens is when driving I shift into 3rd gear and when I go to shift out of 3rd it comes out of gear but it's like it hits a brick wall and will not go into the home position. I was hoping the adjustment and new oil would work but it hasn't done anything.
Got a 2001 Jetta 2L automatic 200k miles with gremlins. possibly multiple unrelated problems. First problem that presented is that the transmission will occasionally not shift into 4th gear. I discovered that if I stop the engine, then restart it, it will again return to normal operation, hence the thought that it is electrical. After a year or so of this, second problem pops up: the engine will die while the car is driving, or some times idling at a light. I've also noticed that the interior lights flicker somewhat in intensity when on and the engine is operating, so there could definitely be a grounding issue somewhere. I have heard that the ECU/ECM connectors could become corroded, but haven't yet dug into it to look. Any guesses as to where to begin?
View 2 Replies01 jetta vr6 5 speed. Alright so earlier today I pulled out the driveway. (Hard) was in 1st gear around 3 or 4 grand and I stomped it. Got to 6 grand and hit 2nd. Took 2nd to 6 grand and let of around 60 mph. After that I short shifted into 3rd, 4th, then 5th. I noticed going into fith was hard. Had kinda rev match to get it. I stayed in 5th till I got to my destination roughly 4 miles. When I came back out to leave I had a hell of a time getting it into reverse. On my way home it was extremely hard to shift and now when the car is running I cant get it into any gear. This is what I did.
Car shifts fine with car off.
Car will not shift with engine running.
When started in gear with clutch depressed I can still let the clutch out and stall the car.
When starting car while in gear with the clutch NOT DEPRESSED the car jumps forward.
I can figure it out ove tried re adjusting the linkage. Nothing.
My problem(s) are as follows:
I recently got a 2001 VW Golf 1.8T from a buddy in the Marines. He delivered it to me at my home almost 4 hours away, as described, reportedly without any issues. I got all of the paperwork transferred so that my wife could have a solid daily driver, only to discover ...
1) The vehicle in question was apparently used by a car audio company local to him, who has done some serious screwing with the electrical system in order to incorporate (and then remove) their crap.
2) When shifting through the gears, and coming to 4th gear, you get a couple of seconds of initial acceleration, followed by deceleration and RPMs falling, which in turn leads to the speedo dropping.
3) The same thing happens in 5th gear.
4) The only option is to downshift to a lower gear, which she did, and was apparently cruising along at 60 mph in 2nd gear, as 3rd gear was behaving the same way as 4th/5th upon downshifting. I'm not a mechanic by any means, but I'm pretty sure this is a BAD thing .
I got a 99' Jetta gls 5 spd. I just replaced the transmission and now the car won't engage reverse from inside the cockpit. Reverse can be engage from inside the engine bay, but when the shift knob is depressed nothing happens. Linkag cables are in the correct spots.

View 1 RepliesWe have a 2001 Santa Fe. Very recently it began hesitating when put in gear going forward or reverse. Once the gas pedal is pressed, there's a delay of up to 2 seconds as RPM climbs, then the vehicle jerks into gear. It seems to run fine otherwise. Mileage is approx 128 k. Maintained very well by the same mechanic until very recently. Internet searches have gotten answers of use fuel additive, install some computer patch, fix an oxygen sensor, change tranny fluid and flush tranny, rebuild tranny.
View 2 RepliesMy car has been making this grinding noise for the last 2 months. It happens when I put the car in reverse gear and slowly release the clutch. Rarely happens also in 1st and 2nd and 3rd and is always at the beginning of the transition when I am letting the clutch go. I do not know if it is the transmission, the clutch or any other part. I drive a 2002 Hyundai Elantra 5 speed manual transmission with over 120 k miles
