Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Hard To Reverse After Shifter Bushing Install

Jul 22, 2015

Installed some shifter cable bushings. But now reverse is harder to get to. Instead of just pushing it down and left for reverse.. Now I have to tilt the shift know slightly towards 4th gear then push down and go left and the gate seems so much smaller now. Overall it doesn't feel that much better than stock. what could i have done wrong?

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Hard To Get Shifter Into Gear

When the car is in gear it's great! Or at least it seems great. However, trying to place the Shift Lever in the car into the gear "slots?" is troublesome.

It feels as though there is a wall in the way for each gear, and i have to force my way through the wall. It's not absolutely Terrible, for i've been driving like this for months. But i want a smother shift! I want to be able to just slide the Shift Lever into gear without any hangups or major resistance.

Double Clutching seems to work, however it might just be from the small loss of RPMs through the process of double clutching.

Personally I would rather not have to double clutch just to see a slight improvement. I have big feet and they constantly are rubbing on the floor mat as well as the plastic above the pedals, so double clutching always feels like i'm wedging my foot into a hole, then back out and in, before i can go into another gear lol.

The problem is only a real issue when i'm in higher RPMs giving the car more gas. I.E. after a fast launch in first, shifting even around 5500 puts a WALL up on second gear making it impossible for me to get it into second gear, after not getting it into second i usually throw it in third, and essentially lose all the acceleration i had from the first gear launch.

As well is there anyway to make the clutch a little stiffer? She grabs fine, i just like stiffer clutch, it requires less of me trying to wedge my huge foot on the pedal.

It's an un-molested MKIV Jetta VR6 with 167k.

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: 1.8T 2004 Automatic - Shifter Hard To Move In Cold Weather

I've got a 1.8T 2004 automatic and the problem I'm having is the shifter is harder to move since the weather's been colder. It shifts very well and is responsive, it's just that I have to pull it harder to select P, R, N and D. D is especially hard (no pun intended you sick minds! ) to select, the shifter kind of stays in neutral but shifts after a bit. Is there anything I can do to fix this?

Side question: is the rear defrost supposed to turn off after a certain period of time? My 2002 golf does it but the jetta doesn't.

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Push Down Hard To Get Into Reverse

I'm wondering if this piece of plastic has anything to do with it,also it is a 2001 jetta 2.0 .I just don't know what it is, or what to look up as a part # or name.

About 2 months ago,it just started acting up, shifts fine, but I have to push down hard 75% of the time to get it into reverse.

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Hard To Shift Into 1st And Reverse When Car Is Hot

Over the past few weeks, my car (2002 Golf 2.0L) has gotten really hard to shift into 1st and reverse (has crunched once or twice), but only when the car is hot, after driving it for a little while. When this happens, and I try to shift into reverse, the shifter feels really "sticky" and can get kind of stuck in the depressed position near reverse.

I bled the hydraulic system and replaced the slave cylinder, but no dice. I haven't noticed any clutch slipping. Shop wants to replace the whole clutch. Is this the right answer?

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: 2002 VW GL - Hard To Go Into 1st Gear And Reverse

Drove my 02 VW golf GL to the airport, it sat there for 4 days, drove it back home. Next day I noticed that my 1st gear and reverse are very hard to get into. So I kept messing around with it and noticed that if I tried to put it slowly into first gear that there was no way in hell it would go, it felt like the gear was closed.

But if I put it into second gear and push it from second gear into first gear it goes back into first gear about 70% of the time. And it will also go into first gear if I push my stick down as if I'm attempting to go into reverse, and slowly move it into 1st gear.

The reverse is also very hard to get into it feels just like the 1st gear does when you try to do it slowly, it's like it's closed off/blocked. Latest work that was done to the car, replaced the clutch about 4-5 months ago.

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: 2001 - Transmission Has Hard Time Going Into 1st And Reverse / Rough Idle

2001 VW Jetta 1.8t automatic.

Transmission has a hard time going into 1st and reverse. Also some times hits hard going into third. I have a CEL for a vehicle speed sensor? Was wondering if it's not the VSS but maybe one of the other tranny sensors?

Separate question. Same car has a rough idle issue. Occasionally stalls but intermittently runs normal always has a low idle around 600 rpm. I have a code for an injector on cylinder three.

VSS code : P0725 - engine speed sensor circuit malfunction

Injector code : P0203 - injector circuit open cyl 3

Taurus :: 2007 Ford - Console Shifter Hard To Move From Reverse To Park

My cousin has a 2007 Ford Taurus with the pushrod 3.0L. It has the console shifter and it is hard to move the shift lever into Park from Reverse. The shifer moves out of park and to every other gear with normal effort. The gear indicator correctly displays the shifter position. It drives/shifts perfectly fine. The only problem is that it is hard to move the shifter from Reverse into Park. It feels like there is a rubbery, or somewhat mushy threshold/resistance that needs to be overcome with a moderate amount of effort to get the shifter into park. Once the shifter is in Park it feels normal meaning you don't have to hold or force the shifter to stay in park.

It is frustrating because it seems most other people have a problem with the shfiter being hard to move from Park to Reverse or Neutral, but she is having the opposite issue. Will it hurt the car to keep shoving the shifter into park when necessary without getting it fixed?

Golf V R32 :: Shifter To Reverse By Pulling The Stick Back?

Quick question, on the R32 manual shifter, is there a way to get the shifter to reverse by pulling the stick back instead of pushing forward for an up shift?

I have an E46 M3 w/ SMG which shifts this way and I am strongly considering an R32. It would be nice to reverse the shift pattern to stick w/ what I am used to.

Golf IV R32 :: Shifter Seems To Move Quite A Bit When Accelerate Hard Or Let Off The Throttle

So after owning my R for just over a week I've noticed that when I accelerate hard or let off the throttle the shifter seems to move quite a bit. Is this normal with the stock mounts or is it something I should have looked at? I know the stock mounts are rubber to aid in isolating the vibration of the engine but it seems like the shifter moves a little more than I would expect.

Golf IV R32 :: Hard To Shift - In Neutral Shifter Is Centered To Right?

Decided to see if any of you fine gentleman could offer some insight into my shifting problems. OK so here it is. I have a short throw shifter and it shifts perfectly at lower RPM's ( under about 3k) anything over that and I have to somewhat force it into gear. I also noticed that when in neutral the shifter seems off centered to the right about an inch roughly. I had the R into VW for some other work recently and they said it was prob the short throw itself so I ordered a new one which should be here tm. Hopefully that will take care of this problem

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: How To Install Wheel Studs

Got the stud conversion kit from ecs couple weeks ago and got them installed. I'm not sure if the engineers that designed these cars sat down in a room and decided that they were going to produce these car in such a way that it causes to work hard on unless your vw themselves. (Marketing may have played a roll) But If you have a German car with stupid ass wheel bolts you know how annoying it can be wasting time doing a simple task so get this kit. One of the best things I've purchased to make working on the car a lot smoother.

Get them hand tight. I used red loctite for high temp. Didn't take a pic of it since I decided to do this near the end. Tighten bolts together so the second one doesn't spin. Tighten em down. Tight! Rear. Longer for wider spacers. Never have a hard time pulling wheels off and putting them on again.

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: 2000 - Way To Install CV Axle?

I am stuck in the process of replacing a driver side CV axle on a 2000 Jetta VR6 automatic. I followed a Youtube video that may have misguided me. I removed the ball joint connection to take out the axle. (I will need a alignment after all this.) I was able to take out the old cv axle, but unable to put the new one on. While taking out the old one, the strut sank 2 inches. I then disconnected the suspension from the braking system, so it would be lighter and easier to push the strut up. However, it will not budge upwards. Do I need to compress the spring? How to move the strut up?

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Shifter Won't Go Into Any Gears

Okay, my shifter rod got spun, and now it doesn't want to go into any gears. Just freely kinda swirls, and you can't push down. The guy working on the car wants to pull the shift box down and see what is going on. He thinks the shift cable or selector cable is broke.

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: 12v VR6 Intake Shifter Rod Noise Won't Go Away

I recently noticed a rattling coming from my intake manifold and with little research I discovered it was the intake shifter rod. I ordered the new updated bushings and installed them today and the rod continues to rattle just as bad. My car only has 90k and I am unsure what to do to fix the noise. I am hesitant to order a whole new shifter rod because it could be the manifold itself too worn. I am just curious if there is anything that I may have overlooked or if there is anything I can do.

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Installing Short Shifter?

There is only one DIY i can find that is still alive. I have a megan short shifter. Its already half way in. I just don't have any instructions and i am kind of at a loss as to where i go from here. Does this shifter change the way my reverse gear will be engaged? I mean will i need to pull the trigger up to go in reverse or will i still push down? Does the spring that came with the kit go under the sleeve or above it? Sounds confusing.

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Wobbling Of Shifter While In Gear

I have the 20th anniversary GTI with the 6-speed manual at 90k miles

I have the Dieselgeek Short shifter installed so for the most part my shifter is nice and tight/precise. However, I have some play in the shifter while it is in gear and I understand that this is normal for a car as it ages. But I assumed that the Dieselgeek would've solved all the gear slop in my shifter, and I was wrong.

So is there a part I can replace to tighten it back up?

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Rear Suspension Rattle After Coilover Install

This previous weekend, my buddies and I finally got my FK coilovers installed on my GTI. I have heard that people say there is a little bit of rattling upon them getting properly seated. Well it has been 4 days of driving and now sounds like the rattling has gotten worse! I took it into a local suspension shop and they couldn't put a thumb on it. We in-turn found out that my rear hub bearing was going out and has since been replace. Having issues with coilovers? I have contacted the company that I purchased them through already and am awaiting feedback from them.

Pic of the car in question. (Before coilovers)...
