In the process of selling my mk4 gti 12V, anyways. this morning while taking pics I went to pop the hood and the lever (one by the pedals in car) felt really lose and it didn't pop the hood. I'm assuming the cable either broke or disconnected, oddly enough it was working fine last night. Is there a way to get the hood open without the lever? I know my way around a car, just have never encountered this problem...
View 2 RepliesI have been having trouble trying to release the lever under the hood on my 2009 Jetta. the interior lever seems to be working but when I attempt to depress the hood lever it won't budge! I like to check my oil on a regular basis and I have never had this challenge before. I'm also worried that if I am able to release it that I will not be able to secure it afterwards, rendering my vehicle inoperable. I am strongly considering just taking it for an oil change and "springing" the dilemma on the garage.

View 1 RepliesMy girlfriend's 2005 Jetta 2.0 overheated and then broke down after making some pretty awful clanking noises. Now it will not start. I'm going to be doing the repairs myself (and learning a lot along the way).
The car will not start. When I try to start it, it makes a 'whining' noise, which I'm assuming is the starter. This is not the first repair I've done on her car. She wants to get rid of it, but now that I've done so much work on it, I've grown a bit attached to it. Plus I think I can save her a bunch of money in the long run If I fix this myself. Here's where I am so far:
I removed the cover over the camshaft pulley and had a look while my SO turned the key to try to start the car. I noticed a couple things:
1. There are no teeth on the timing belt.
2. The camshaft pulley still turns, but not continuously. It turns a little then stops, and then tries again. (Engine not seized?)
I have ordered a code reader which should be here in a couple days. With that I'm hoping to check if there's a compression problem. If so, I'm under the impression that that would indicate a blown head gasket, or bent valves. I checked the oil to see if it looks milky and It still looks like regular oil.
I have a 99 vw jetta the coolant outlet flange nipple became brittle and broke...its the smaller 1/2 size hose not the two larger ones. Not sure how much coolant actually flows thru there and want to know if i can drive it a couple miles to a shop without it hurting the engine. I believe it's bone dry but don't know and i didnt want to add water since it's 32 degrees COLD. Don't want the water to freeze. The part comes in this weekend ...how far can i drive , with water no coolant....(vw coolant is expensive).
View 2 RepliesWent to pull on the hood latch lever and nothing happened. It almost appears that the cable/ball has either popped or broken off the latch. While pulling on the lever you can hear a sliding noise at the latch.
I removed the bottom panel under the bumper but no support there as the latch is covered and not accessed from that location. There is a slight gap from the front under the hood and above the logo but how to get around to this.
How to at least open the hood from the outside. Remember, the cable won't release.
went out after checking out the cheap mod thread (to see what I can mess with), went to pop the hood and nothing happened. I've looked all over vortex and I cant find anything.

I can't get the hood open at all, and now I'm afraid to drive the truck, fearing the hood might fly up as I go down the mountain pass I live on. How do I repair this and get the hood open?
I tried pulling cable and pushing on hood wont work.
I've a 02 Jetta GLS - 2.0 engine..

What could be potential problem areas?
I drive a mk4 GTI 2004 Stage 1 software. Just got home from being at sea for the last three months and my hood latch won't open. It pops exposing the tab, but the safety lock won't release the hood. I tried putting my hand in and pulling the the mech that the latch attaches too but it wont budge. I then tried removing the grille to have a better view and more access, but it doesn't look like its possible to remove the grille without popping the hood. Anyway, how to tackle it, maybe if there's a way to remove the grille without breaking it or getting from under it.

View 24 RepliesI opened up my hood and now it doesn't close... it seems like the latch isn't locking into place and holding the hood down. I do a lot of car work myself, but after countless hours of trying to figure out why my latch isn't locking shut, I give up. I am planning to take it to a local dealer after I schedule an appointment, but that means that I can't drive for a few days... maybe weeks if they are booked... I don't want the hood to pop up on the highway or anything.
View 24 RepliesI have a 2002 VW MK4 1.8t. It has 172,000 miles on it. Since i bought the car i have had to add coolant from time to time due to leaks from various plastic coolant parts so I replaced the crappy plastic connectors and flanges as they failed but it has never overheated till a couple days ago. It rose up to about 210'F but I didn't let it get to 260'F (aka the red zone).
While the temperature was up, the coolant was spraying everywhere causing white smoke under the hood. I stopped and looked under the hood and came up with the conclusion it was the coolant flange that holds the temp sensor since it was leaking coolant from the flange like a faucet hince the reason it caused it to overheat due to lost of pressure and no coolant in the system. So I replaced the part and gaskets then checked for other obvious leaks.
No leaks are shown nowhere else in the vehicle. So I added coolant to the car and let the cooling system do its magic as i left the heater on high. Let car idle with cap off and heater on for about 45 minutes. No signs of overheating. So I take the car for a spin and that's when the car starts heating up. I look under the hood and feel hoses and notice all are pressurized but top hose that leads to coolant flange is hot and the bottom hose connected to thermostat is cold.
I checked the return hose that leads up to the coolant reservoir to see if it's cycling and it appears it was. At low rpms the return hose had a steady flow and at high rpms it was flowing much rapidly. Which made me think it wasn't the water pump also this car with that many miles wouldn't have lasted with the plastic impellar this long if it wasn't already swapped out by previous owners. My question is what would cause it to still overheat? I forgot to note the fans did not turn on when the temperature was rising unless i turned the a/c on. But i still did a drive test with a/c on and it still overheated. I also did multiple burp cycles. I have invested alot of money in custom work and suck to leave it parked on the drive way.
The other day the plastic top piece of my shift knob broke off (that had the shift pattern painted on it) and it made me once again want to replace the stock shift knob. I was considering buying one, but other than TWM I can't find any that I really like, so I want to machine one myself. My biggest problem in planning right now is what metal to use, SS is nice but expensive, and how to attach it to the leather and the stick. The only way I can think of attaching it to the stick is with set screws which would be hard to drill.
View 1 RepliesOver the past few months I've been hearing a popping sound from under my seat when I move a certain way and figured it was just the cold or another new sound well today I found out it was the seat frame mount and it finally snapped, pictures to follow.
Went to the dealer they quoted part/labor is gonna be around $1000 so I took it to a friends shop to see if he can weld it or if it's too far gone, should be getting it fixed this week, for now it's zip ties and really cautious driving.
One thing I noticed when I was checking out the R is the lever came off rather easy.
I put it back on. This happened on both sides.
Is this normal? Would I want to Super Glue it?
One of the nozzles on the back of my intake manifold broke off. I don't know how to better explain it. The ones the back of the manifold closest to the firewall there are several hoses that hook to the manifold. The second one from the left broke.
View 7 RepliesI was putting on the H& R sports springs tonight and was onto the last corner, front passenger when one of the 3 ball joint bolts broke off. It was so rusted that the nut didn't want to come loose. I used too much force and out came the piece. Do I just go buy a new ball joint at the local VW dealer and swap it out. I didn't touch the other two and the car is still driveable. It's the middle one, exactly as shown in this photo from the DIY.

View 1 RepliesI've had my GTI almost 2 months now, and I love almost everything about it. Recently I've noticed that the shifter makes a thunking noise and seems to seat itself into reverse after I put it in reverse and back up 10 feet or so. It seems to happen at lease half the time, but not every time. It does not happen if I keep my hand on the shifter. Is it worth bringing in right away or should I just wait until my 10k service?
