I've wondered why our cars make those burping sounds when you let off the throttle.

What the technical reason this happens?
I've had my 2003 GTI VR6 for the last 12 years and was accustomed to the exhaust sound. I just picked up my 2016 GTI DSG w/ PP and I"m surprised with the exhaust sound. The new car is stock still, but it already sounds like it's been supped-up with a new exhaust system, kinda "throaty" and sporty. MUCH different than the 2003. Is this normal?
View 12 RepliesI've noticed that potentially my heat shield or whatever guard that is 1 step toward the front of the car from where the inlet pipe connects to the exhaust system may be the reason for my rattle at 2k and 3k rpms. i think its a heat shield but I am not sure. the thing is it seems properly mounted, nothing is cracked/broken/or loose. But when I do try and wiggle it it does make a slight creaking noise that sounds similar to the rattle I get. So I could foresee this as being my issue.
But, is there anyway to fix this rattle w/out just taking off the part? i figure its there for a reason and it looks like its held on in 2 places. But they're not nuts they almost look like spot welds or something. 1 on each side. What to do?

I recently had my muffler and resonater taken off and put a magnaflow in place of the resonater. in place of the muffler is a Y pipe with 2 tips. the exhaust now sounds like a jet or like air is just blowing through the pipe really fast. also my check engine light came on as soon as the work was done and cranked the car. when i get hard on the gas the car hesitates on and off continuously. I don't know if the jet sound is from the Y pipe and tips or if it is something else.

Is the car is a bit loud? It almost sounds like it has a sporty exhaust on it. From what I can tell it's all OEM. Its not super loud, I have an 06 evo, thats loud lol. This just sounds like its got a gutted cat or something. Just a throaty tone from the exhaust.
I am kinda thinking maybe the flex pipe is maybe leaking a bit. Cause it seems like its coming from under the car near the flex pipe, but its cold here, so I figured I might see an exhaust leak under the car.
I just didn't know if the se were a little louder or what? Its definitely not coming from the engine bay.
I have an exhaust leak that has gotten worse and is quite loud now. I have been under the car and a mechanic just checked what he could without a lift and didn't find any leaks. Yesterday, I had it up on ramps and looked under and think the sound is coming from where a heat shield is. When I'm in the car the noise sounds like it's slightly in front of me.
View 3 RepliesThe TigWig runs great, tonight on my way home from work the MFD tells me to stop and check the coolant level. I stop and check the level and it is below minimum but still some in the expansion tank. On the trans side of the engine there is coolant on top of the transmission. I return to work to top off the coolant, everything is back to normal. The temp gauge never exceeded normal operating temperature. Half way home low coolant warning is displayed again. Temperature still never above normal. I top off the coolant again. It seems the Tiguan is burping coolant out of a flange or sensor port. It burps and then reseals. Mileage on the TigWig just hit 148k.
View 6 RepliesMy 2003 Impala has been running fine for months now, after about 6 months or more it got exhaust work and 2 months ago it had to get exhaust work again.
The muffler actually fell off on a long drive and a garage nearby said the previous garage totally screwed it up because the said the exhaust pipe was cut too short and they had to weld together a "fixer piece".
Then we took it to our local Firestone simply to get the hubcap covers taken off as it was a free service and after we had to them put back on, about 1 day later, we started getting a strange noise.
Everything sounds fine when you are idling yet the minute you start moving and especially with all the windows up it sounds like somebody is running a lawn mover or an airplane is flying above.
There is no vibration or anything just that strange noise.
I replaced a cracked radiator with a new one on my 2000 model B2500 a coupla' days ago, guessing at the refill, as I just got the truck and don't have a manual. Guestimate was pretty close, but I got some weirdness from the temp gauge for a bit. Temp gauge read cold (even though it was maybe sixty degrees outside) after idling for quite a bit, but would rise to operating temp if I ran the RPM's up a bit, then fall back to cold when I let it drop back down to idle.....never rose to above normal operating temperature, though.
I took a short drive down the road, stayed at normal temp, but dropped back down to cold when I parked it. Taking a peek under the hood, had air blowing out into the resevoir, bubbling like bathtub farts. All appears to be normal today, but I've gotta' take this truck for a roadtrip in a coupla' days and would like to make sure I ain't missed a step that'll send me hikin'.
What is the process of burping the radiator so's I can be sure it's all good?
New thread so this info can actually be found. Like most of you, I was irritated and embarrassed the first time I tried to top off my tank at a busy station, then had a quart of fuel pour back out onto the ground before I could get the cap back on. I did a simple fix that worked forever after. I always get a full fill, never have fuel burp.
View 1 RepliesSo I started my truck this morning and it sounds like air rushing out from the driver side of the engine. I currently have my ICP unplugged due to a bad sensor, will be replacing it on Sat. Also I have been having an issue with my turbo but I don't think that it's related as I here the air rushing sound when at idle as well at when driving. It seems to be a bit louder when the engine is cold but I could also be crazy about that.
View 3 RepliesI recently purchased this truck and have towed a couple of times with it. It has 98,000 miles and I do not know if the automatic transmission fluid has been changed. Should I have it flushed or drop the pan and change it? I have a lift so doing the change is no problem, although it might be worth it to pay a transmission shop to do it.
Also, I hear what appears to be like a heat shield rattle or something that sounds kinda like an exhaust leak during loaded acceleration. What to look for to locate the noise? One last question, the air bag light is on sometimes then off sometimes. Any known air bag light issues? I love the truck, hate the gas mileage!
So I have been troubleshooting a few cooling issues and I am currently at a loss of WTF is going on with this thing. The truck is a 99 5.4L SD and has no heat and was burping a little coolant.
The truck was originally burping coolant out of the overflow tank. After verifying that it was not a head gasket by all means except the exhaust gas test. I replaced the overflow tank and cap.
Now the truck is holding pressure fine but I do not have heat. Here is what I have done:
I replaced the blend door actuator--no heat
I went to flush the heater core and since the quick disconnects were such a bitch to get off I decided ti replace it while I was at it. --still no heat,
New thermostat 195 deg --no heat
The radiator is brand new
Supposedly the water pump was replaced by the previous owner I have all the receipts for the truck so I could double check
Truck seems to circulate coolant fine i measured temps at the water outlet with an IR thermometer peaking at about 175~10 deg due to accuracy of the thermometer and heat loss due to thermal variations the lower radiator hose and reservoir coolant temps were around 76~10 degrees so the radiator is working as advertised . Truck doesn't overheat, granted after draining and replacing the coolant the temp gauge did climb some while driving until i worked out all the air pockets but still didn't overheat.

Basically, at least for me, ever since my R32 was new I would hear this metallic "tink" sound when in reverse. Usually noticed at the end of reversing, just about when I hit the brakes to shift into drive. It happened always. Flat ground, slopes, cold engine, warm engine, etc...
It sounded like a coin dropped from my engine and landed on a piece of sheet metal. It never bothered me enough to take it in for service, but it was still annoying.
After a fellow OZ R32 owner suggested dampening the tranny cable with silicone (or similar), I finally decided to take a crack at this sucker. You'll have to remove the airbox to access the heat shield.
Here's a closer look at the problem area:
And a closer look, showing the torn heat shield that protects the tranny cable from the exhaust. The obvious guess here is the tear was allowing the shield to move against itself, causing the noise I would hear.
All I did was bend the shielding away from the cable a bit so that they weren't pressed against each other anymore. Didn't bother trying to insulate the cable with silicone or anything. Fixed my problem 100%, can't believe I've waiting this long to do this 5 minute fix.
My R is making a noise I don't think I've heard before.
I've been listening to my Borla exhaust to figure out if it's rubbing on the propshaft. I'm pretty sure that's been sorted, but it still 'sings' a little bit. I'm guessing it's some sort of resonance...
Anyway, while I'm listening carefully, I hear a noise that sounds like 'rotational dragging', almost like a parking brake is dragging a little bit, but no screech or anything. It's particularly bad (though still subtle) when everything is cold. It's been colder here lately, 30-40F.
At moderate speed, 30-40mph, I don't hear the noise under throttle, but when I lift throttle, I hear the dragging sound. It might be that it's always there, and just being masked by engine / exhaust noise. Or it might make more noise when I lift.
It seems to be coming from "under and back" of the driver's seat.
I am running an upgraded Haldex with the switch set full time on 'race'. I had the 40K service at 40K, and I'm now at 76K.
About 2 or 3 days after picking up my car, I started to notice that it sounds like the doors are whistling, almost like there's air coming through. At first I thought that maybe my windows weren't shut all the way, but checked them, then had a passenger point out the same thing on the other door. (3 doors not 4).

Also when i start my car and it cranks over, I hear what sounds like a blow off sounds but its not from my diverter valve.

My 2005 gti 1.8t started sounding weird a few days ago, it has a really deeper tone to it, sounds like a truck or a diesel. I can also smell gas in the engine bay, car seems like it runs fine just sounds really funky. Sound gets louder as I accelerate.
Here what it t sounds like right now. Sound is coming from top of the motor or behind it near downpipe, not beneath the car from exhaust.

I just bought the car.(2 months) This is all I've done to it.
-Changed the oil.. Euro spec Castrol Edge
-Changed the Plugs and Put the red R8 coil packs
-Changed the Diverter Valve
-Changed Air Filter
Its 2012 with 47,000 miles. I had the dealer tell me its just the fuel injectors and not to worry. I've seen and heard multiple GTI's and this is My 3rd 2.0t and none sounded like this. I'm new to the GTI but have driven nothing but VW since the state gave me a license in 1997
