I've recently started having problems when shifting into second gear. When I go to shift into second gear, the action feels kind of spongy, and the car won't go into gear. If I cycle the gear shift back and for from 1st to 2nd a bunch of times it will eventually go into gear. From that point on it will shift with no problems. The problem is sporadic and tends to occur more often when the car is cold.

The problem: Very hard to get a smooth shift from gear to gear. Trust me, I know how to drive, but I can always feel the car shifting into a different gear if you know what I'm saying. On my friend's bone stock Jetta, I just let the clutch out without gas in between shifts and you don't feel a thing.
On my car, you feel EVERYTHING. People have told me the light flywheel will make the ride more uncomfortable in many ways, especially since the RPMs drop much quicker in between shifts than stock.
Shifter seem like it is way too loud going from gear to gear? Just holding in the clutch and rowing from gear to gear...seems way too loud, Seriously sounds like shifting gears in my old 5.0 mustang.
View 1 RepliesThis is a off and on problem I have been having with my R. On some mornings, not every one, it will not go in first all the way. If I try to let the clutch engage it will pop right out. But after I drive for a while and putting it in and out of first a few times like a at light, it will work normally. Is this because of an HPA short shifter I have in there? I would guess no because it is not a constant problem, but im not sure. Also while putting in the short shifter I noticed a valve on the bottom of the air box, could this be interfering?

View 16 RepliesIn addition to having some play in all gears, I am having vibration only in 4th. I put brand new oil in the trans, and I intend to do the cable adjustment and new bushing next weekend. I am concerned that this will not fix the problem though. It only happens in 4th and in addition to vibration, when alternating from being on the throttle to not i can see and feel the lever kick forward a bit (when off the gas) and snap back when i get back on the throttle. It has never actually popped out of gear, but it is definitely not normal.
View 14 RepliesLLast night I was driving. I got off the highway and pulling on to the main road in 2nd, I ripped on it and went into 3rd quickly. It basically kicked it out of gear, and didn't seem like I had any other gear besides 1st or 2nd. Got to a local gas station in 2nd, and I originally thought my linkage had come off. While trying to back into a spot to make life easier, there was no reverse. seems like the trans is binding up. Aligned the linkage anyway, when the car is off, it goes into every gear, but when it is on, it feels like 1st-2nd-nothing. If I roll the car backwards and then forward, I have 1st. Other than that, it will not engage. If I put the trans in reverse and then try to back up, it feels like the trans is binding. Same with 1st, unless the car is running. Traction control light will not turn off either, will have it scanned this week to determine that issue...
Ive seen most people have issues with the 1st-2nd shift fork and have this causing the reverse issues.

Me and my buddy that has a 2012 GLI where playing with our cars and i noticed that he is at 4,000rpms in second gear @40mph, while my car (2010GTI) was at 4600rpms....Both of us have 6 speed manuals.. What could cause this other than gearing? I don't think the gearing is different since to my knowledge both cars and trannys are the same...or am i wrong?
View 17 RepliesJust bought my first r 32 recently , had previously owned a 20th anniversary GTI, anyway guy i bought the car from mentioned the awd system was not working , recently was driving and clutch would not go into gear in addition to the haldex or awd not functioning . The clutch also kinda "stuck" to the floor .. Also I noticed some fluid on the undercarriage the day I brought it home . I'm pretty sure the car was beat on but there aren't many available up this way , and honestly I know I'm prob gonna spend some to get her road worthy again , Also felt like the car was operating in rwd for some reason and traction control light is on.
View 3 RepliesGot my shifter in yesterday installed it today, had a few throwbacks but Jim was able to iron them out, except for one. I can go through all my gears, even reverse, but when I put it into "1st" it puts me in 3rd and it's sluggish taking off. I'm going to take it all apart tomorrow and try it again.
View 1 RepliesI recently got my R32 and noticed that its nearly impossible to get into 6th. If you play with it long enough it MAY go in. I looked at the linkage and there's nothing jammed in it. I am thinking the linkage may need an adjustment. Could it have anything to do with the VF trans and dogbone mounts.
View 3 RepliesThe car was starting to have issues going into gear after a night of cruising. Then I was experiencing what I am thinking was clutch creep. The clutch would be down and in gear and the car wanted to slowly roll.
What I have done to try and fix it:
I have bled the system many times to get all the air out(i believe), and also readjusted the the linkage. NOW, the car will not go into gear when it is on but will when it is off. I have the car on stands at the moment and it will shift through all the gears when the car is on just the wheels spin since it is in the air.
The clutch/flywheel/pp/throw out bearing all have less then 2k miles on them. Tranny fluid has been replaced with Penzoil syncomesh. I have yet to ever do a hard launch.
Clutchmasters Fx400, OEM DMFW.
Car is an 02m trans w/o the black cap in the side so I cannot do the washer/gasket mod for clutch creep. Believe I have to order NLS shim kit and put behind the throw out bearing.
So i was driving home from work yesterday and out of no where i couldnt get the shifter to get over to 1st or 2nd gear. i had to wiggle it around and push down on the shift knob and it eventually went over. Happened a few more times yesterday and like twice on my way to work today. It feels kind of sticky or something, not really moving as freely as it used to. What could be causing this?

View 3 RepliesSo I just got home from a road trip yesterday, no problems on the trip. This morning I drive out of my neighbourhood, turn onto the highway and I think to myself, that's strange, clutch feels a little notchy ... and then I go to shift gears and it won't go into gear. Any gear. I push down and it just won't engage, it pops right back up. Had to walk a mile home carrying my kid in his car seat and trailing my 6 year old little girl. Now I'm getting it towed home so I can check the engine bay to make sure everything is cool. If everything is connected and I can't determine the issue then I gotta flash back to stock and hit up VW and have it towed over there.
View 9 RepliesOver the past couple weeks sometimes when i turn my car on it wont rev above 3100 rpm in any gear. The car is a 5-speed jetta 8v 2.0 and I'm just looking for any insight as to what is causing this problem. My check engine light is on and i had the codes read and there was a bunch, "catalyst system below threshold bank 1", " ignition coil A,B,C,D circuit primary/secondary malfunction", and "camshaft position sensor "A" circuit high input". I'm not sure if these codes are related to the problem but i had to have the whole top end of my engine rebuilt not even a year ago and all of the ignition coils and sparkplugs were replaced during that time.
This problem does not occur every time i turn the car on however, i did notice that sometimes when i go to turn the car on instead of the car starting in quickly, it will start hard after sever cranks and this is usually when i have this issue. it is very weird almost like there is a rev limiter on and i can usually fix the problem if i get up to highway speeds and downshift hard into 3rd and the car will shudder once or twice and will drive like normal again. What could be wrong i was thinking it might be a bad O2 sensor or a vacuum leak somewhere.
Just to clarify what i mean by it wont rev past 3100 rpm i mean that i can start from idle and accelerate normally and when it gets to 3100 rpm the power goes away and will just stay there even i put my foot all the way down. I can shift up and the same thing will happen i will accelerate normally but then once i reach 3100 rpm again it will stay there.
so on the way home from the golf course, I caught a little bit of fluttering in 3rd and 4th gear pulls. Time to upgrade the dv I guess. I was under the impression that we wouldn't have to do this though.
View 8 RepliesI just had the APR Stage 3 GTX kit installed on my golf R about 3 weeks ago. Was running great until a few days ago and was making around 28 ish lbs of boost. I started having problems with the stalling the car in first gear a few days ago. It has a moment of hesitation in 1st gear when you hit the accelerator and my vacuum at idle fluctuates a bit and is reading about 20 on my PODI gauge when it use to be around 23-24. Vacuum drops to around 18 with air conditioner on.
I cleaned my intake today and re-oiled it...was extremely dirty. no change in the idle and now the car makes a max of about 12 lbs of boost. I believe it was likely the same before I changed the filter I don't see any visible vacuum leak and the engine runs smooth. it doesn't have and DTC codes present. When at idle and I take the oil cap off it idles rough. Just a slightly rough idle in first and the car won't make more than 12 lbs of boost in any gear in any rpm situation.
So i just noticed this issue the other day. If I downshift from 6th to 5th the car hesitates before it starts to accelerate, this only happens for 5th every other gear is fine. This only happens downshifting from 6th to 5th. What is going on?

My car is a 2011 gti 2 door 6mt. I have a catless 3" downpipe, afe intake, nitto neogens, bsh inserts, and apr stage 2 tune. Last night at the track my first run was 15.4 @ 95 mph with a clean launch. 95 degrees at 1160 ft 80% humidity. My best run was 14.7 @99 mph 85 degrees out. It seems like I should be getting much better times. My 60 ft was around 2.5. I was launching around 3k feathering the clutch with the traction off. It was hard to get the car to hook up but the 14.7 run felt solid on take off.
The Nitto Neo Gens definitely hooked better cold. When i shifted into 3rd the car felt like it did not have power for a second then it put me back in the seat. It did the same thing in 4th no power for a moment the bam. Its not like the barely noticeable delay from the electronic throttle/lag it was very noticeable. I dont know whats going on with the car. It may have just been the track prep/heat. I raced a g8 with an intake and exhaust and he only ran a 14.4 with a clean run.
