I just had the rear air compressor suspension replaced, but when it activates it sounds pretty noisy. It doesn't sound normal. What the heck is going on?
View 1 RepliesI have a 05 gx470 and I was having trouble with the rear staying bottomed out and not pumping up. I replaced both ride height sensors. Nothing changed until about 1 hour of driving the compressor kicked on. it road better but still bottomed out some. So I raised the sensors about 5mm. it road great for about 10 miles then went back to riding on the axles. No compressor activity. Also when the compressor is not engaging the push buttons do nothing with changing the dash from H-N-L no matter when you push it. If you hear the compressor running all the buttons will work just fine. I have a useless car because it is not safe to drive when its riding on the axle bump stops.
View 8 RepliesI have a bothersome bottoming out type of noise coming from near my empty trunk or underneath the trunk area. I have the 17" stock rims with stock mich. tires. I had VW check for the rubber rear shock absorber plate which I do have. I Have the rear tire secured as well as the battery. I have insulated the hard foam tool storage kit so it will not bounce going over irregular surfaces. Yet I still get this sound like a loose bar hitting against the underneath on less than perfect roads.
View 5 Replies1998 4X4. My rear suspension is so loud and noisy it's driving me crazy. I've soaked the thing many times with wd40 but it doesnt seem to work or work not more than a day or two.
I've tried to make a pic with my phone because I think at the rear side of the leafs they are separating way too much... I've got no more than about 150lbs and a LPG-tank on my bed...
Moreover I think my truck rides bad. I know it's no Cadillac and I'm running 33s and its a 4x4 BUT I've got quite new Rancho shocks and the whole front suspension is in good shape and it got an alignment a month ago...
So what do you think, after 181.000mls time to get new rear leafs or take the old ones apart, free them from the rust, paint & grease them and put them back together?
At my 30,000 mile service about 6 weeks ago I reported to the service manager that the suspension seemed noisy at low speed over undulating side roads. They could not duplicate the noise. Now with the cold weather, the noise has increased considerably to the extent that my wife who claims never to hear any of the noises I obsess about, asked me what is that knocking noise
I have made an appointment at my dealership first thing on Monday and they are going to ride with me and if necessary use the "chassis ears".
From everything I have read it has to be control arm bushings or the air suspension. I think the fact it has worsened considerably now the temperature has dropped eliminates the brake pad rattle possibility.
I had this problem before on my 2009 RX350 and took it to the dealer - they were stumped at first but eventually figured out it was the spare tire making noise every time I made a turn into a driveway or went over a little hill/bump.
They did something to adjust it or tighten it and the jack etc. and it went away. Now the sound is back, big time. How to adjust the spare to get rid of this. Also if there's a hack to pad or insulate the spare that would be great.
I also found another thread on a similar thing but it's talking about struts, shocks and trailing arms on 3rd generations. [URL] ....
My 2008 rear suspension creaks and squeaks and groans when I move my horse trailer. Truck has 32k miles, has done since purchase last year, squirted wd 40 and that works. At ford place now, they say it is because I added the ride rite air bags. Told them it made same sound before I installed. What to tell them (tech service bulletins ?) or give up and keep spraying and looking for dry joint?
View 1 RepliesI have a 2004 GX470. Been a great car. Has 310k miles and very little in repair. My current problem is the rear air suspension leaks down. The problem is not 100% of the time but probably 80% when the car is left parked and off, over a few hours the air is released and the rear is sitting on the bumpers. My theory is it is not the air bags as if one leaked it would be doing this every time the car sits.
My hunch is it is either the component that releases the air is not sealing up every time after it releases the prescribed air when the car is parked. ( That sound it makes when you get out and it lowers the car a little each time) ... Or the sensor tells that component to let more air out and it does not tell it to stop.
So my rear air suspension just went out, I'm assuming that my air bags have a leak or a hole because the air compressor shut its self off. I'm thinking of just getting rid of the air system completely and just putting on some good shocks and leveling it out.
View 7 RepliesI have a 2007 GX 470 that I use to tow a boat ~3500 lbs. Typically, when I attach the boat to the trailer hitch, the rear end of my GX 470 will lower ~1.5", then the air suspension will activate and bring the rear end back up to a nearly level position. Lately, the air suspension has quit working.
I've taken it to my dealership, they've checked it out and told me that the system is working fine. When I brought it home and attached the boat, the air suspension is still not working. I've got an appointment on Monday to haul the boat up to the Lexus dealer and show them the problem. I can use the air suspension switch to raise the the rear end and the pump seems to work just fine.
I'm thinking that, although the "system" is working fine, somewhere there has to be a sensor or switch that tells the system to work - that isn't working.
My rear air suspension keeps dropping. Sometimes my suspension goes down all the way when parked, but not all the time. When I start the car it goes back up. It's a 2003 GX470.
View 8 RepliesDoes this sound normal that sometimes the rear suspension with move/adjust itself after I turn off the car and then get out? One side appears to be slightly lower than the other as well, but both of the height adjusters underneath appear to be at the same level.

View 14 RepliesOK so I know that my rear suspension no longer operates the way it should...with 230K miles and owned since 03....time has taken its toll. So I was wondering if any parts list to repair the rear air suspension so that I can take it directly to my toyota dealer to install. I can tell that the air suspension is trashed simply because I would normally hear the car lower when I parked in the garage etc...now it doesn't do anything.
View 6 RepliesI took my 2003 GX470 for service (not a Lexus dealer), which included rear brake pads. After picking up my car, I realized there was a serious malfunction with the rear air suspension, and my "car height" was no longer working. I took it back to the mechanic immediately - he stated that the rear air bag deflated when they put it up on the lift (which is normal). However, they couldn't get it to inflate again, so had to order a new one. I'm wondering if this is the mechanic's problem or mine (the car has 101,000 miles on it).
View 3 RepliesI own a 2004 GX470 and am recently having issues with my rear airbag. The height control is inoperative and the bags will not fill completely and lift the rear.
I went under the car and found the bumpstops are a few centimeters off the rear axle.
What could cause the height control to not function? Could it be the height sensor, airbag, etc? I could hear the air compressor turn on so do not think that is an issue.
Noticed this rear suspension noise on their RX330's. Every time I go up a slanted driveway (driving into a driveway at an angle, not head on), there is a clunking noise coming from the right rear of the car. The sounds it makes is almost as if I the spare tire is lose hitting on the right side of the car. This only happens if I am driving into a driveway coming from the right side, the sounds does not happen if I am entering my driveway from the left side.
View 1 RepliesMy rear bushings on my 1997, A4 Audi, make a crunching thumping sounds when the body torques over irregular surfaces. My Audi mechanic says that it is the bushings. Replacing the A frames and bushings will cost more than half the car's worth. I belief that dust got into the bushings when I went on dirt roads in Death Valley or they are just worn. When I blast the bushings with water the noise disappears or dampens for a while. Car has 186,000 miles.To keep the noise down, can I add graphite or some other material to the bushings?
View 4 RepliesI've had the stiff ride issue with my 2005 gx470. Took it to three lexus dealers and finally the vehicle is fixed. Hats off to Lexus of Maplewood, St Paul, MN. Their shop foreman persisted and found after several days troubleshooting; a speed sensor was the culprit. My ride is much smoother over speed bumps without the need to cycle through the height adjustment.
