My father-in-law's 2001 Lexus RX300 makes squealing/whistling sound when engine is cold. Multiple serpentine belts replacements and adjustments made no difference. One mechanic said it's the bearing inside the alternator, but I find it difficult to believe. Why would bearing sound go away when it heats up? Besides, having issues with bearings inside things like alternators and such.

Once the engine warms up it goes away. But my wife is freaking out about it. I am thinking it might be something with the air intake but not sure.
View 3 RepliesNeed to determine the cause of a strange high-pitched squealing noise coming from the engine compartment of my 2008 Subaru Outback 2.5l automatic. The squeal happens only when the temperature is cold (below 32 degrees) AND I hit a bump. It happens more often the colder it is outside. The noise is definitely coming from the front of the car and seems like the passenger side but I can't be sure. It happens with the blower fan/AC both on and off so I don't think it is caused by that. It happens when the car is cold or driven for a while and warmed up.
It occurs at both high & low speeds. I checked all my fluids under the hood and everything is filled as it should be. There are no lights (check engine or ABS) on. Recommend any troubleshooting that I can try? I have not taken it to a mechanic yet as they might have a hard time reproducing the noise since it has to be below freezing and hit a decent bump. I attach a video that I took while driving last week on a 16 degree day and heard the squeal when I hit a bump. I had been driving for about 30 min when it occurred. I have more videos of the noise if needed.
We have a '99 Lexus RX300 with 174,000 miles (the engine has 130,000). The check engine light has been on for 2 years. The first mechanic found it was an O2 sensor and said that we didn't need to really do anything as long as the car was running good. So we didn't. Apparently a new code appears when running a diagnostic for the evap. sensor or vapor canister...is that right??? We had the evap sensor fixed..or so we thought and than tried to have the vapor canister worked on but the mechanic said the light came on.
Recently, the car has started lurching or losing power when it's warmed up and when it's accelerating. So, we took it to the Lexus dealership and 2 things were suggested
1) the vapor canister had been installed incorrectly and
2) sounds like the transmission is going.
So I have 2 questions, I think,
1) What is going on with the check engine light?
2) Does this sound like the transmission is going?
I have a 2000 Lexus RX 300 with 235,000 miles. I have been having a challenge with the "check engine" light coming on. I have taken it to a reputable mechanic several times. I had the oxygen sensor replaced, and the light went out. I had an emissions inspection, and the light came back on during the test, but it still passed, and the inspection report commented that there was a communication error, but no other problems. Every time the light comes on my mechanic puts his testing equipment on and finds no problems. I am trying to sell the car, but I am concerned that any potential buyer is going to look a the high miles and the check engine light and get scared off. The car is in great condition and looks like a very well taken care of car.

View 3 RepliesAfter tune-up to my 2000 RX300 (105k miles), car came back with clicking noise under dash... took back to repair shop they agreed sounds like morse code, or like rain falling. They examined under hood and said they don't know source, but that the work they did couldn't be causing it. They said could be drive belt and/or pulleys, or clutch on AC, or alternator bearings... that it doesn't look like any major issue. I brought the car in for a tune up and it came out with this annoying noise. Do I keep pushing them to figure it out what the did and correct it? Or do I trust them that additional work/expense needs to be made? What could the noise it be? It appears spread across the whole dash, but under the hood just sounds like a consistent clicking noise near the belts.
View 9 RepliesI have a 2000 Lexus RX300, with over 200k miles. The motor blower is making this very (at times) loud noise. To take a closer look, I removed the glove compartment to take a better look at the unit itself. I took a closer look at the blower motor itself and it looks like the top piece of the cone is cracked a little. This is where the little clamp ring is located on the tip of the cone. The noise is definitely coming from this area. I was going to just replace it, but could there be anything wrong with maybe one of the servo motors as well (Airmax or Mode)? It seems that at times (out side of the main noise) the air is not being distributed properly.
View 4 Replies2000... I have a code P0171 bank 1 too lean. My question is does this exclude anything that will effect both banks? If it was MAF sensor or fuel filter would it set code and say banks 1 and 2 running too lean? In which MAF sensor ohms out correctly. I cannot view fuel trim files. I have looked for a vacuum leak with no luck. I got some cigars to try to smoke it to see if there is any vacuum leaks. Trying to narrowing what i need to checks.
View 19 RepliesI've noticed during the winter my 2012 6.2L engine seems to 'whistle' when it is cold. It also seems to do it intermittently...that is, it always whistles when cold, but it might stop for 30 seconds and then do it again. It does it at idle, and also when driving, just until it warms up.
What is it, and do other people's trucks here do that? I was thinking maybe the engine fan, but why would it cycle on and off for maybe 30 seconds. My other thought was A/C pump.
My Variant (2007, 48K miles) is experiencing a squealing noise during cold morning (below 45F) start ups? AC always off at start up and the noise goes away once the engine is warmed up. I brought it to the dealer last week and after leaving the car over night they told me the noise can't be duplicated which is a total BS. [URL].....................................
View 12 RepliesMy Jeep makes a whistling noise in cool/cold weather (~60 degrees and below) that no mechanic has been able to diagnose let alone fix the problem. Here are the details...
-high pitched whistling (can be heard inside and outside the car - very loud) only when temps are about 60 degrees and below-after 5 minutes of the car running-only when RPMs are about 2.0 or below.
However, RPMs can be higher when it is colder out and it will still make the noise-as you push on the accelerator, the noise gradually decreases until RPMs are high enough to completely stop the noise.
When temps are around 50-60 degrees, sometimes the whistling will stop after the car has been at a complete stop for about 1-2 minutes-If you turn off the car and let it sit for 1-2 minutes, then turn it back on, usually the whistling will be gone. It will need to sit in the off position for longer the colder the temps are. This problem has been ongoing for about 4 years.
So heres the story..........'02 Escape, 179K miles, just had the oil changed 2 weeks ago, ever since then I've smelled oil burning when the car starts up and every now and then after exiting the car. Also have had the check engine light on intermittently for the EGR insufficient flow for the past few months. It comes and goes whenever it wants. Today Wifey called me and said something was wrong with the car, I drove it home (about 26 miles). The car runs fine as shifts through the gears, but as soon as it gets a load put on it, it cant pull hard like it used to and it gets a high pitched/squealy whistle similar to a turbo that's spooled up.
Its hard to say where its coming from but from what I can tell I'd say somewhere under the hood near the glove box. (that's the only way I can think of to describe it). There's a big long hill right outside her work that I wasn't sure I was gonna make it up. Car just didn't have any power and couldn't decide what gear to be in as RPMs were too high in a lower gear but wouldn't pull in the higher gear. Car pulls hard off the bottom but falls flat in the midrange. I was thinking maybe clogged cat but what would the whistling sound be?
I just installed a k&n CAI on my 3gs and i noticed a whistling noise when you accelerate from a stop and when you blip the throttle. If this is normal with a CAI or if something is wrong. I've checked for air leaks and made sure everything was installed correctly.
View 2 RepliesI have a 2001 Echo 5-speed that I bought it November. Loving it so far. One thing I've noticed is an electronic-like whistling sound whenever I'm applying light throttle. The sound goes away if I left off the throttle, or if I give it more gas. When I say light throttle, it's when I'm applying enough pressure to maintain maybe 1500 RPM in neutral, so not much. It's only at that specific point that I'll hear the noise, and it's in all gears and not related to vehicle speed. I've searched through the usual channels but didn't find anything related.
In the few months before I bought it the previous owner had the MAF sensor, alternator, and water pump replaced by the dealer so those components are covered under the 1 year/20k parts warranty if they may be a culprit. I'm hoping to narrow down what the problem could be before I take it in for routine service anyways.
2001 F150 SCAB with 74,000 miles. There seems to be a whistling noise coming from the front axle. It is definately a rolling noise. I can shift into neutral and put it in 4H and still have the noise. Brakes are good, tires are fair... I just rotated my tires (criss-crossed front to back) also sprayed all of my boots with silicone spray. Still has a whistling metal to metal bearing sound. When I have the front jacked up and spin the wheels, there seems to be a decent drag turning by hand. I don't remember having much of a drag before.
View 6 RepliesWhen it is cold (below 30 degrees) and above about 30mph, there is a loud high pitched squeal (rather like the pitch of a squealing hearing aide)that seems to come form the front drivers side. The colder it is, the louder it is.
When I am able to take it in it is too warm to hear it. What might be causing the noise and will they be able to figure it out if it isn't making the sound?
The VSC light came on at approximately 62000 miles. Took it too a mechanic who put it on computer, found gas cap loose, and reconnected hose under air filter however no code shows on the computer for a fix. The VSC light still remains on. Tried all the internet fixes; pulling fuse & disconnecting battery cable. The light goes out but as soon as I move the car it comes back on. Is there anything I can do to avoid a large dollar visit to the Lexus dealer since there are no driving or stopping symptoms with the car.
View 9 RepliesI just bought a used 93 accord. The engine is in good shape and runs smoothly most of the time, but I have two issues.
First, when I start the engine cold, there is a very loud belt squealing for about 3 or 4 seconds. Is this a common problem and, if I isolate the belt at fault, what should I do about it?
Second, the engine revs (both audibly and on the tach) when I press on the brakes. I've been told by a friend it might be a vacuum leak?
Recently bought a 2012 gti last week, everything is great until I hear a weird whistling noise coming from the engine. I suspected it was the water pump, since i researched it and some people had the same problem. Brought it back to vw to get it checked and they said their was nothing wrong and it was a common problem.
View 11 RepliesI have read up quite a bit on this whistle that the 4.0 liter SOHC engine makes while accelerating. Sounds like something in the TB or intake to me. There are no definitive answers to the whistle that I could find. Need to resolve this whistling noise? It's a very high pitched whistle only while accelerating at about 1/3 throttle.
