My '84 Nissan (5-speed manual transmission) exhibits the following symptoms:
(1) car is in neutral. I start it and am unable to shift it into any gear (grinding noises when I try to do so)
(2) car is in gear. I push in the clutch and start it. The car lurches forward.
While a friend was using my 2003 Nissan Sentra evidently a child spilled a sugary drink onto the gear shift console without my friend realizing it. The car sat for 2 weeks in the Sept. heat. When I drove it for the first time, I noticed a grinding sensation when I put the gear shift into reverse and park. The other settings were normal. Do I need to have it checked out, or will the motion of using the gear shift eventually wear away the sticky mess that obviously is in there? My husband didn't notice a thing, but it is my car and he very seldom drives it.
View 3 RepliesRecently, a problem has developed with shifting gears in my 1984 Mercedes 300D. The shift feels too smooth as I move the gear shift knob from Park to Neutral and back. It doesn't catch when in Park. The car will still roll when in Park and the engine will not turn over. If I move the gear shift knob from Park to Neutral and back a few times and push the car a little, the engine will eventually turn over and crank. Sometimes it cranks in Park and sometimes in Neutral. Can you tell me what's causing this?

View 6 RepliesSo i was trying to adjust my freinds shift linkage on his o2j and i got a little ahead of myself and forgot to put the shift tower in the home position before making the adjustment. after i realized you can't shift into second ( either that or 2nd and 4th are extremely close together now and feel like the same gear ). I try to get it in home position even with the cables off ( did this for experimentation) and still wouldn't go into home position...meh. still have all the other gears including reverse .

The problem: Very hard to get a smooth shift from gear to gear. Trust me, I know how to drive, but I can always feel the car shifting into a different gear if you know what I'm saying. On my friend's bone stock Jetta, I just let the clutch out without gas in between shifts and you don't feel a thing.
On my car, you feel EVERYTHING. People have told me the light flywheel will make the ride more uncomfortable in many ways, especially since the RPMs drop much quicker in between shifts than stock.
I have an 89 Nissan Sentra 4x4 wagon 5 speed. It only has 40,000 miles. When I upshift or try to accelerate at low rpms (1-2k) it bogs down a bit or feels like it might even be missing on a cylinder. I just replaced the spark plugs (correctly gapped) but not the wires, with no change. I also have been running fuel system cleaners in the gas with no change. Could it be as simple as the fuel filter?

View 5 RepliesI've got a 2003 Xterra, RWD, manual transmission, with around 110k. It's been giving me a little trouble shifting into gears 1-3 when the weather's below 30F. It started doing this when I got the transmission fluid changed last, about 2 years ago. I took it back to the mechanic who fixed it immediately, and he changed the fluid a second time for free, but when the problem persisted, he said he had no idea. Needless to say, I haven't gone back to him. Since then, I've tried to ignore it (not too hard in sunny NC), but it's getting worse and I'm about to move to Chicago, so I think I should fix it before I move to the land of harsh winters. My first guess would be the tranny fluid weight might be a little low and I should try a heavier weight.
View 13 RepliesMy wife's AC quit blowing air last week (a '05 Nissan Altima), so I decided to check all the fuses before just replacing the blower motor. I pulled all fuses out in all three fuse boxes and didn't find any blown. Got a call from an upset wife later that day saying she could not shift the car out of park. Currently, she is driving it by using a screwdriver to release the safety switch next to the shifter.

View 8 RepliesMy automatic 2007 Nissan Altima has developed an intermittent problem when I go to shift it into park it won't shift down past neutral. I can't physically move the gear shift past neutral and can't take my key out of the car. If I wait awhile or drive off somewhere else it will later allow me to shift normally again and won't happen for awhile. It has happened maybe 8-9 times but I worry it will get worse or break the transmission. I've taken it to a mechanic and they looked at the transmission and didn't see a problem but sense they couldn't recreate the issue they couldn't fix it.
View 1 RepliesMy car is a 2008 Nissan Altima 3.5L. It has an automatic cvt transmission. Here's the scenario: I turn my car on and shift into drive. I'll drive for maybe 10 feet and I will hear this strange sound that can only be described as a dull knocking followed by a dull scraping sound. The dull scraping sound will last for about 5 seconds. The sound appears to originate from behind the gas pedal, and I'm think I can feel the gas pedal vibrating very slightly as it is happening. The only condition that makes this sound happen is when I shift from park or reverse into drive. If I start my car and put it in drive it happens. If I'm at a red light go to park then drive, it happens. If I turn my car on, go in reverse, then drive, it happens. However it doesn't happen if I just stop and don't change the gear selector. It's been happening since I bought the car at 56k miles, I'm at 69k now. I haven't seen any decrease in performance, the car runs like a champ.
View 6 RepliesI have a 2005 Nissan Frontier with a manual transmission (~6500 pound towing capacity). I rented a large wood chipper this weekend. On the ride home from the rental pickup, the transmission started shuddering when shifting. It is most noticeable when shifting into first gear from a standstill, and less noticeable on each successive shift. Once the gear is fully engaged, there is no shudder - it is only when letting out the clutch that there is the shudder. The truck only has 50k miles on it.

Sometimes when I put the vehicle into drive and step on the gas the car will not move and instead the engine will rev.I'll put the car back into park and then into drive and it'll work fine.
I checked the ATF, which was incredibly low and refilled it. The engine oil was also very low, which was refilled. The problem still persists. So I decided to add a bottle of Fuel Injector Cleaner to the gas tank.
I took the car for a short drive and nothing happened aside from the fact that the Check Engine light now comes on and off. The car also idles between 1000-1500 rpms.
My car is in great condition. 70,000 miles and I am the second owner. Every time I take it to a mechanic they can't believe how good the engine looks. But there is a mystery problem. I have been dealing with what seems to be an air leak or pressure issues. After driving for a while the car has a lazy start after a stop. The first few gears seem to not catch. If fells like there is a block in a line and it's trying to push through air or fuel to get to the 3rd gear. I have noticed on colder days the timing belt screeches a bit. When in high altitudes this problem is worse! After my last oil change they noticed a leak. Also the dipstick for my transmission fluid is broken. Although I check it regularly and that seems to be just fine. I want to get to the bottom of this!

Looking to see what the probable cause for this code to pop up? Is this a rare code that popped up on this car? There's no noticeable symptoms going on with the car.
View 9 RepliesI can get my car to rev past 4,000 rpm in gears 1-4 but in 5th gear it wont pass 3,000. It used to be fine, but one day it was just like this and hasn't changed since. This is annoying because where I live some of the speed limits are at 75mph. When I'm in 5th gear at 3,000 rpm I'm only going 65. What can I do to fix this? Reset ECU? Clean MAF sensor? Is it related to an approaching timing belt failure (I'm at 94k miles and it needs to be replaced before 105k)...

No matter what speed I'm already at.I recently had both CV axles replaced. Transmission fluid doesn't have any flaky stuff or anything, it's pink though. The check engine light is always on, but it starts to blink when it starts to shake between 2-3 gear.
It's been doing this for about two weeks, nothing has changed, average 15 miles a day. No weird smells from the engine, leaking radiator fluid super slowly (was told to just keep filling it)To start the car I have to press the gas slightly.That's everything I know is wrong with it. I just want the shaking to stop. Does it sound like I need new transmission fluid or something?
We have a Nissan Pickup that anytime (in every gear) that the truck reaches 2700 rpm it begins to jerk-feels like you're trying to start it in 3rd gear instead of first. We have had it in a shop with someone who just repairs Nissan's and have been unable to find the problem for over a year. View 2 RepliesTrying to find out what's wrong with my 89 Sentra 4 spd. Over the last 3-4 months when it's first started it runs a little rough and has a rich smell to it. When put into gear especially at low speeds it starts to surge like its running out of gas. Even when warm - at any speed, when you very slightly decrease acceleration it surges. But when you just accelerate it stops. And when coming to a stop it stalls but will start right up again.
