When driving there is a loud rattling noise coming from the exterior of the car but when I put on the brakes the noise stops. I'm not sure if its a brake shoe or some other cause...

View 1 RepliesI have an 06 2.0T passat sedan. After a year, I started getting this loud rattling noise from one of the panels in the back everytime I hit a bump in the road. At first, I thought it was the rear tray behind the seats. But after sitting in the back with my son while my wife drove, I realized that it's a panel on the ceiling. It's this long thin panel that runs along the width of the rear ceiling, right along the top of the rear windshield. I'm thinking I could just remove the panel and put some sound proofing material or adhesive foam pads or something.
View 9 RepliesMy car is making some noise. The first problem is describing the noise. I think of it as similar to the sound one can make with a moist finger rubbing along the top of a wine glass. A passenger last night thought it sounded like those gadgets you whirl above your head to make noise. I think the noise is coming from the rear brakes. The noise goes away if I apply the brakes. It also goes away if I apply the emergency brake.
It doesn't always make the noise, but it is happening often enough, and is loud enough, that I had to switch from the news to loud music on today's drive to work. I have enough pad left on the brakes, but I don't know about the e-brake. I was under the impression that there are tiny drum brakes that are used as a mechanical emergency brake on these cars? I've never peeked inside. I do have 118k miles on the car.
Maintenance history available at [URL] .... where you can see that the rear rotors were cut at 78k. However, I can feel a ridge on the rotor which I think is where the rotor is swept by the pad. I wonder if this ridge is somehow a problem, maybe rubbing against something else (which will doubtlessly turn out to be now damaged and expensive).
I have an 01 passat 1.8 turbo, I have been having a loud rapping noise coming from the top of the engine. Started about 8 months ago when you turned on the engine and would immediately go away. Then it continued stopping at 500 rpms then at idle and now it continues up to 2000 rpm. I have spoken to the local vw dealer twice now, first they claimed it was the timing belt and tensioner, replaced it, still made the noise. Next was told that there are two screens that could be clogged, one in the oil pan, which is impossible to get at without pulling the engine, and the other screen was located under the valve cover, pulled it off and found no screen, called vw and was told no screen in my model.
I noticed a chain in the inside end of the valves, when the engine runs it is loud and comes from the area of theat chain, the chain appears in fine shape, tight, there is no signs of metal shavings or anywhere that parts may be hitting. The valves were all is good shape. The car runs fine and the gas mileage has not been effected at all. No oil leaks or idiot lights coming on. The car sounds like a diesel on alot of steroids. It is so loud and i fear something is going to blow on it.
So I just picked this car up, (2000 20v turbo passat) 93k miles and I did a tune up (plugs, air filter, oil change w/ oil stabilizer, and injector cleaner) when i was out beating on the car a little, afterward I got to a stop sign, and i heard a VERY LOUD noise coming from the passengers side under the hood, it almost sounded like a loud motor, or the turbo but it was too loud to really determine... it was only there for about 10 sec then turned off but came on again about 1 min later. is this a bad bearing in the turbo? or what might it be?

I have a rattling noise coming from the front suspension (both sides) when going over small bumps. Most people point to ball joints, but I find my case odd because I just replaced

1999 ford expedition 5.4L ....I have been hearing a loudish (I can hear it in the cab) humming noise coming from the engine bay. I don't hear it when the truck is cold (1 to 5 minutes after starting), seems to get louder at it its peak (the more I drive). When i open the hood, the humming is coming from the intake. I am a pretty handy guy, just at my witts end right now....not sure, but I was thinking brake booster?

It does it in all gears even neutral. if you rev the car in park or neutral with your foot on the pedal steady it does not make the noise. only if you push the peddle quick and let go.
What could this be? It started after i brought my car in to DUNN TIRE for a rotation.
I called them and asked for them to check the noise and the guy denied me and said they don't do that kind of work. only tires and brakes!!!!.

View 8 Repliesi have an 07 jeep compass (only 52k miles). it was making a loud rattling noise (i liken the sound to the noise a penny or pebble makes when its sucked up a vacuum). I pulled off for gas last night and it just wouldn't turn back on. AAA was able to jump the battery and i was able to drive home. Now its dead again. i previously had an issue where the car was stalling when idle (only if it was in drive). I'm thinking the rattling, battery draining and stalling must all be connected.
View 10 RepliesWas driving 97 honda Accord 4 cylinder today when it made a loud rattling noise, took it in to advanced auto parts to see if they could give me a hint to what was wrong, as I was showing the employee the noise got progressively worse and he told me the connecting rod was loose and I could make it home if I went under 35 he mentioned something about tightening two bolts but having to drop the oil pan to get to it, as I was driving home the noise eventually turned into a clunk and the car died, when I try to start it up you can hear the engine turn but there is nothing after that, don't know much about cars but what is the process I need to go through to replace this connecting rod myself and how to get the car to start again.

The Noise: It sounds like a cross between Morse code ticking (No Morse code message. I thought of that) and the sound a styrofoam cup makes when it rubs against another cup. The noise is fairly loud. Noticeable at standard conversation speaking levels. Doesn't just go away once it starts.
The Apparent Location Of The Noise: Sounds like it's coming from just right of my center fold down cup holders between the driver and passenger sides of the dash.
Process Of Elimination: No set rule for when it starts to happen but it doesn't happen all the time. SEEMS like it happens after a longer trip.
Air conditioning on or off doesn't make it stop. Fan on or off doesn't change anything. Restarting truck at a stop light doesn't change anything.
Varying truck speed doesn't make a difference. Banging on the dash near the sound doesn't make a difference.
I thought there was a v10 specific superduty section like how the psd does, but my thread went in the "performance, engine, troubleshooting" section.
I wanted more exposure than that particular small viewed area.
I don't have a video of the noise, but my 99 f450 v10 5spd has some iffy noise coming from the front. I've read so many threads on this and they either end with "my motor had 1-2-3 bad pistons" or "my flexplate was cracked" and all that dealt with chain tensioners were never finished.
I know what piston slap sounds like (worked on many cobras and lightnings with forged pistons that had it) and have experience with bad wrist pins and broken piston skirts, and this noise doesn't sound like any of it.
Noise is a loud clicking/clunking/Detroit diesel idle noise. When you rev the engine up it doesn't lighten or get better, only worse as rpm goes up. Oil is terrible looking, I'll be getting that changed this week.
Story on truck. I've had this thing for 4 years with blown motor. I got a buddy that acquired a parts truck and he said it ran good. I dropped my truck off and he swapped the engine. I got my truck back running, but with this engine noise. He said it needs to get run some more and change oil.
I think it's timing tensioners, my buddy says it will come out of it, a mechanic friend says it's going to blow up "because they all do" and I don't really want to replace the engine again.
If it's tensioners, how big of a job is it. I have the cam clamps and crank stop and the ford tools to make sure crank and cams don't rotate while apart.
I'm just 650 miles from my truck and may need someone else to do the work. Which sucks.
I got in the car today and started it... I was waiting a few seconds for someone to get in the car (it was in the garage) and as soon as the engine kicked on there was a very very large long rattle noise i immediately turned the car off. Waited again and turned it on same noise.. the only thing I found was a cover under the car towards the front was really loose. ( I haven't hit bottom or anything while driving) but I did have the lighted door sills just installed the other day. But it never made that noise..
btw i have 1100 miles on it..I looked under it and is the black dust protector thing supposed to be loose like if I push on it I can make it rattle..

View 13 RepliesFiance's 09 Corolla S just started having a rattle/knock noise this evening. car has 123k. It's clearly an engine internal sound. I believe it is coming from the cylinder head. She called me when it started making the noise, she shut it off and has only been ran enough to get it on and off the trailer.
Not sure if it's a broken valve spring or valve. or the timing chain guides? It threw a CEL light.
I ran the code on my scanner and it came back with: P0302 (Cylinder 2 Misfire)
Whenever I start my 99 passat a really loud vacuum noise is heard. along with the noise the engine idles higher than normal. when the noise goes away after a couple minutes it idles at the normal speed again... what the problem is?
View 3 RepliesMy 1999 Astro van recently started making LOUD rattling noises under the hood. No previous problems, ran great up till pulling into my driveway. It does have 160,000 miles on it, but has always been excellently maintained. Towed it to dealership where they told me that "by the sound of it" it would need a new engine. This van is fully loaded, power everything, leather interior, paint job is great, everything works. Breaks my heart that I may have to junk it. So, the big question is, junk it or get a new motor?
View 14 RepliesOur 1995 Toyota Camry shakes and makes a loud rattling noise while driving, but not every time I drive the car. The rear seat of the vehicle, especially feels the shake. The rear tires have been replaced and aligned, but still the shake/noise persists. Our mechanic has not been able to recreate the noise. It has occurred in the winter and summer with or without the heater and/or air conditioning on or off. Sometimes the shaking is so severe, I am afraid of what will happen, but I will stop at the next light, sit for a minute or two, and when the light turns green, the car goes, no shaking involved - everything is fine. I typically drive in town so speed is only 45 mph or less. The car has only 137,000 miles, and is well-maintained.
