We have a 2004 Passat 1.8 t with about 180,000 miles on it. We changed the battery and now it seems to belch out tranny fluid once it comes to a stop. I thought I read where some sensors need to be reset after a battery is changed. Would a battery change cause a leak of this type?
View 1 RepliesLong story, but I bought a 2007 Prius with 73K miles on it. Now I'm at 93K miles, and I think it may be more jerky than when I got it when I shift the tranny into "brake" mode.
I don't know if the fluid has ever been changed on it, and I intend to change it very soon now. Am I in a pickle? Or should this transmission be fine if the fluid hasn't been changed for 93K miles?
Those with Honda's know the Auto Tranny needs some extra care - there is no filter to change.
Factory recommends drain and fill every 2 yrs, which I have been doing.
After Acura TL (?) had some issues, Honda made a machine to suck old fluid completely out - heard dealership did not touch these machines for 6 months!
I am wondering if I should change these fluid every 1 yr instead of 2 yrs on any of my two cars - one is pre 1990 (1st gen) with 165k - but replaced tranny 7yrs ago with a used one and it had done 25k. Other is around 2000 (3rd gen) with 120k. The 1st gen does 3k every year and the other does 8k.
I could take to dealership and ask them to drain the whole fluid out - sometime this might make the tranny from stop working given the age on the 1st gen.
Are there any other tips?
I took my gs350 for a drain and fill today. Before They did anything, The service advisor called and told me the pan gasket is leaking along with a seal? I am aware of the gasket on the pan but wasn't able to get any info on the seal. Is it a seal that is replaced regardless of leak or not if they drop the pan?
Got quoted 700+tax for pan drop, replace gasket and said seal with fill of fluid.
Noise started a day earlier, drove slow and listened to the noise while turning sharp in both directions. Was noisy at full turns and mostly quiet going straight. At higher speeds a slight wine could be heard.
It was a clunking, grinding noise with a little steering bind and pulling. I assumed it was cv joints but but after jacking up the front end to inspect, I have tranny fluid leaking from between transfer case and tranny.
Last thing I expected was tranny, It shifts fine and just started leaking, NOW what am I facing.
Found a puddle under the X last weekend. I thought it was the pan gasket when I got under her but much to my dismay, it was not. Fluid was actually seeping from between the extension unit and the tranny. Would this just be the gasket between the two?
View 5 RepliesMy 99 V6 with Tip just started to malfunction this past weekend. By malfunction, I mean when I shift over into Tip mode, the display remains on automatic and even shifting up and down will not change the tranny gear.
I was driving with the cruise on and shifted into Tip mode to slow down for a toll booth ( slow to 25 and not stop all the way). When I got through the booth, I hit resume on the cruise forgetting I had shifted into tip and the car revved back up to 65 mph in 3rd gear for about 5 seconds ( I had the stereo cranking and couldn't hear the engine)before I realized what I had done.
I tried to upshift in Tip but it wouldn't let me so I had to go back to full auto setting where it works fine.
Is it possible to burn out a fuse or circuit of some kind by doing a dipshizit maneuver like that? The car runs great otherwise and still is getting low to mid 20's mpg in spite of the ethanol crap.
BTW, just had the computer reflashed last week after putting a new battery in because the Throttle Body was not working properly.
I just picked up an 09 F250 a couple of weeks ago and I was planning on replacing all the fluids since I'm not sure when everything had been done in the past, but it did pull a camper 5th wheel. It has about 93000 Km/57000mi on it
One thing I noticed when reading the manual is that a rear diff fluid change is not necessary on these rear axles unless they have been submerged in water or repaired etc..
Just after I got it I noticed the pinion seal was leaking. It was fixed under warranty but the dealer did not replace the diff fluid as they said Ford will not pay for it.
My question is do you think I need to replace the diff fluid or should it still be good, given the relatively low mileage.
Having issues with transmission fluid spewing out the dipstick hole? Truck is an 04 Escape and has worked great until I had a rear manifold leaking. I took the truck to our mechanic and he replaced the rear manifold cat converter. He broke 3 of the 4 bolts so he told me he had to roll the engine forward to gain access to tap out the broken bolts. Im sure he took the throttle body and intake off for more room. I Got the truck back and noticed transmission fluid all over my driveway the next day. I contacted the mechanic and he states it was nothing he did and cannot figure why this is happening. Basically told me to fly a kite!

Every time I refill the bottle, the next morning I always find the fluid under driver's side bumper on my driveway.
Fluid coming from my 2006 2.0T Passat:
- Oily feel, pink color (transmission fluid)
- Noticed coming from the middle, or perhaps the front part of the engine compartment, just off center on the drivers side
- Only seen after the car sits overnight, in my garage (no dripping seen for hours after parking)
- Leaves a 10in diameter sized slick on the garage floor that I wipe up with a paper towel in the morning
Suspecting a transmission fluid leak, I paid my dealer a visit and was told, "must be another car leaking, because all your fluids are topped off, your cooling system is holding pressure and your engine compartment is clean."
Recently the dash display indicated that I needed to add washer fluid. I was surprised that it would be low since I rarely use it and had not done so lately.
Yesterday I added water to the bottle and heard a trickling noise as I was doing so. To my surprise the water was leaking out below the car! The bottle remains empty.
I think my auto-dimming mirror is leaking its magic fluid. [URL].................................. I guess it's just a sign that the car is getting old.

View 15 RepliesBought a 98 last week and noticed an issue a couple of days ago. The car seems to be leaking power steering fluid from right in front of passenger front tire. Looks like it's coming down from somewhere behind the bumper, just not sure what line are over there. I had to replace one of the clamps on the line below the ps bottle and it seemed to be fine for 2 days.
The weird part is that it doesn't seem steady. I had the car parked in one spot for an hour the first time I noticed the problem and the wet spot was about a foot in diameter. But then I drove the car last night and left it parked in the driveway for hours and nothing. This morning when I was leaving there was a puddle about 4" in diameter.
Just as the title states. The thing I'm wondering is how this happened; I haven't hit any hard bumps nor has the right front had any sort of collision. My guess is it started to leak out about 5 days ago which triggered the low washer fluid light and when I went to put more washer fluid in it tonight it just starts dripping (about half second intervals) out of the valence.
View 1 RepliesAnother month and another problem to be resolved. Here goes: The 2001 Passat 1.8T has had a hard life in the past year. The specifics are listed in previous posts. Most recently, the radiator was replaced because the engine was overheating again. The car has been leaking fluid ever since but it is not radiator fluid. Yesterday, I took a look at the oil and found tan gunk mixed in with the oil. I must admit that I had concerns after the fact about the shop that did the last oil change. Is it possible for mechanic to screw up the head gasket while replacing the radiator? It was fine before the repair. Is there another source to look for the seepage into the oil? Basically, the question is - Is the car destined for the graveyard because of this?
View 9 RepliesSo when I had my timing belt done my mechanic showed me that I had some transmission oil leaking It didn't look like much but looked like it was coming from gasket my v6 Passat has 200k on it and I heard that transmission fluid shouldn't be changed on any car with high mileage the transmission doesn't really act up sometimes when its cold it takes a little bit of time to shift to first but when its warmed up its just fine, what are my options, a full drain and filter change, which I am skeptical about. Adding some new fluid, I just gotta know if I gotta replace the drain plug. and then just a fluid change drain and add.
