I was backing out of my driveway yesterday with the ac on and as I hit the gas it sounded like a belt was slipping. Now this only happens when the ac is on. When it is off nothing happens.
View 1 RepliesThe Ex just started making a sound that I can best describe as a hiss or squeal, but not as much of a squeal as the belt were to make if it were slipping. It starts around 1700 rpm and gets louder as the revs increase. The truck also feels maybe a bit down on power but that just could be me not willing to push the gas as it squeals louder when I do. I don't see anything leaking and anything out of the ordinary under the hood. All gauges are normal, turning the a/c on or off doesn't change anything. Nor does the radio. Any clue as to what my problem is? I'm a little worried driving home if it's something potentially serious.
View 14 RepliesI'm in the middle of doing a timing belt and as I was slipping the new belt on my crankshaft moved! To my horror my timing mark erased after I used some brake parts cleaner to blow off the area. What can I do to get that bolt back to TDC?

Due to being low, and taking my splash guards off to put on my skid plate, in heavy rain, my belt I guess gets wet, slips and I lose power steering. I can hear it screech.
I didn't think that would be the case for snow, but sure enough after plowing through my driveway to go to work it was slipping screeching and loss of power.
About a week ago I noticed a strange squeaking with a hint of rattle, almost like a belt slipping. The sound seems like its coming from in between my front wheels. I only notice it after I take my foot off the brake pedal after coming to a complete stop or near completely stopped, i.e. stop and go traffic. Seems loudest when I accelerate from a complete stop and tends to go away after I start moving.
View 2 RepliesThe power steering seems to work fine and dandy. But when I turn the wheel all the way to the right, or to the left, the serpentine belt squeals, indicating that the power steering seems to have faulty valve or whatever. What is causing this problem?
View 6 RepliesLong story short is, I replaced my 2007 Santa Fe's serpentine belt and it still squeals for some time after we start the vehicle (then stops) ... but more importantly I *think* its still slipping if we're driving during rain or on very wet roads.
Long story long is ... the problem appeared as loss of power steering and air conditioning when driving during rain. Took it to the dealer and they suggested to replace the serpentine belt, replace the shroud (plastic) that covers the belt, and replace the timing belt. As we have 36k miles on it, no one I talked to understood the timing belt suggestion. I see though perhaps its just because the car is 4 years old? The shroud the dealer claimed was cracked and may be letting water in on to the belt. However, they completely removed it and did not replace it so I was not able to inspect this myself (wife took the car in for the appointment).
I bought the new belt and put it on. The squeaking was gone but as soon as I hit rain again, the slipping was back as bad as before (and we'd lose power steering / air conditioning same as before). I had a 1.5 hour drive in rain where the belt was slipping almost nonstop; constant back and forth between catching and slipping.
When the replacement shroud came in I thought that might solve the problem - keeping moisture off the belt. However with that in place I'm afraid there is still some slippage as I've noticed some dashboard lights come on during brief heavy rain. Also the initial squeaking is back when we start the car.
Well, two years after I replaced the pump bearing and the power steering is acting up like the belt is slipping. Sometimes it works fine, sometimes the steering gets jerky and hard.
The fluid level was fine, but I changed out the old stuff anyway, the belt is fine and not loose. I also pulled the pump apart to inspect it and it still looks as good as new.
When it acts up at a stop, it will squeal, but like I said, the belt is not loose. It's almost as if the rack is bottoming out against the bump stop (it's not) or the valve that lets excess pressure is dumping pressure randomly.
I took the valve apart with the pump and it looks fine, no scratches. Do the rack or valve go bad? If so, what was that like and could my rack have a seal leaking inside?
Weird problem I've had for some time... The car makes a noise that sounds like a slipping belt and only does so at a speed of 15 mph or more. Its a manual and I know it can't be a belt because I've done a little testing while driving. I'm going down a hill, put it in neutral, turn the engine off completely and coast down the hill and the noise is still there. So nothing in the engine is turning at this point, I'm just rolling. So what is moving at this point that could make such a noise?
It also makes the noise when the engine is running and what's weird is I can almost make it go away (the cycles of the noise become less and less frequent if that makes sense) while in gear if I apply the gas just a touch to a point where I am neither accelerating or decelerating. What this noise might be?
My brakes are making a noise like a belt slipping when I'm at a complete stop. The noise only happens when I'm at a stop, brakes work fine. Lift my foot off the brake, noise goes away. Seems to be coming from front drivers side. What should I look for?
View 7 RepliesI have an 05 Jetta Wagon GLS 2.0 which has been amazingly resilient. I had the 100k check up done recently and everything still came up positive; the battery conked out at 120k; and I just recently replaced the stock head and tail lights out of proactiveness rather than them going out. But, I think I've run into an issue now. When I drive through a puddle (or otherwise get water significantly on the underside of the car) if I am running the AC at the same time the engine makes a squealing noise as though a belt is slipping due to the water. I presume is the case that a belt is slipping--and I imagine that is part of the reason it idles noisier than when it was new, but before my wife and I make a budget I'd see whether there are other options. As it is there are 130k miles on the car, it's a 5spd standard, and other than oil changes and the checks at 30, 60, and then 100k no real service has been done.
View 4 RepliesMY 2003 Santa Fe is fwd with the 3.5 v6. While under normal conditions, the engine lost power and began "chugging" and "bucking". There was also a belt slipping "whine" associated with this problem. The problem continued for about two minutes, then corrected itself, and I was able to drive normally.
View 1 RepliesI have a 2005 f-350 4x4 with a 6.0 power stroke now it's been causing me problems to the fact I couldn't find the problem the truck would smell like an electrical fire but last night I found that the belt is slipping on the seized a/c pulley but I can still spin the center clutch so can I just replace the clutch assembly? Or bypass the a/c so I can drive for the time being?
View 1 RepliesI have a 2004 Honda Element and when the AC compressor cycles on it makes a high pitched noise similar to a drive belt slipping. The AC is still cold and the noise is not overwhelming (yet). I know this vehicle has a serpentine belt and that doesn't appear to be making any noise. The only noise is when the compressor is running.
Is there a belt that drives the compressor (other than the serpentine)? And, is this something that I should get fixed ASAP or can it wait until my next oil change? Meaning, if I wait until the oil change (under 1,800 miles) will hurt anything?
I was driving out of a parking lot and as I accelerated onto the main road my vehicle stopped. I heard a grinding sound and could not go forward or reverse. While the car is in drive, park or reverse my car will roll any which way. It pushed it across the street. I tried to locate my tranny dipstick via visual inspection and manual. I could not find it. Could the stick have never been put back at some point in service and caused this issue. That seems unlikely but the thought occurred. Could it be the velocity joint? Whatever it is it certainly sounds like a transmission issue.
View 1 RepliesWell the wife and I got the new car itch so we went to VW and left with 2 cars mine 2011 Jetta SE for the wife we picked up a 2010 Passat with 17,600 mi CPO with an extended warranty up to 100,000k. Ok once the car gets to about 20 mph I feel a slipping or shutter or something then it is fine after that lots of power no issues. She drove down the street the other day and she said it felt like the parking brake was on and a dragging sound. She turned on and off the p button not better. She parked it and took my Jetta.
View 9 RepliesWell, today i had my first bout with tranny issues of any kind either before or after my BTS installation. After sitting all day at work, heading home, the shift i guess from 2-3 at about 40-50 mph shifted really hard, BANG. Heard a whirring/whining sound, lots of slipping with the TC. After a lil ways it was like it was in neutral.
Coasted to stop. Went thru the gears from park, rev, and drive about 3 times, got movement each time. Got out, looked for obvious, no fluids or linkages apparent. Drove thru town about 25-30 mph. Felt like it was "hunting" and shifted like a manual grinding gears. Got on highway and no overdrive and im thinking no high gear either.
Push button on shifter light changes, but no change in operation. Running 60 and rpms are turning 2700ish. Still "hunting". But while hunting it isn't wide rpm swings, just a small amount, not wide enough for a gear shift. I am thinking that its torque converter constantly engaging and disengaging.
While letting out of gas it coasts down with TC still locked up all the way down to about 1100 rpm before unlocking. Then I start seeing the OD light flashing. Ok, classic wire chafe in steering column. But it doesn't always flash, only sometimes. And fuses are good. Temps never got above 150 during this 50 mile drive.
So i get home (and its frigging dark already, i hate that this time of year) and I log on and start reading up on this again to refresh my memory. I had called Brian over at BTS when it happened as i was going down the road, he was busy at time. He called me after i got home and i explained and he talked me thru some things. Wanted me to pull the codes and get back with him tomorrow. I did that and the screen shot is below. I will talk more with Brian tomorrow.
But during some of my reading i think i came across some others that had similar trans codes and the issue ended up being the alternator. Alternator ? For trans issues? Is that right? I guess stranger things have happened. I have a high output alt waiting to be installed but haven't yet. I guess we shall see. Brian thinks it something telling the TC and trans to act that way. Doesn't think anything mechanical, yet, leaning towards electrical.
I just brought the car into the shop to have the transmission fluid pan gasket changed, then have the fluid refilled with the proper OEM fluid. Prior to that it had Redline transmission fluid and was working fine.
The shop I took it to only works on VW and Audi and the mechanic told me I HAD to use OEM transmission fluid or I could damage the transmission. Now when I hit the gas pedal on every cold start it jerks into first gear but never does it again, until the next cold start.
Alright so yesterday I changed the oil for the first time in my 1.8t B5 Passat and when I went to drive it the transmission slips a little. When I was changing the oil filter, I did drop it and oil spilled bellow. I am really confused why the Trans would have a problem. There is plenty of Trans fluid, and It had no problems what so ever before.
View 20 RepliesI have a 1999 Passat Sedan, V6 with automatic transmission, 62K miles. The Transmission has started slipping from 1st > 2nd, particularly up hills. Took it to my local mechanic who referred me to the AAMCO next door. They changed out the fluid and filter. No luck; still slipping. They want to do a transmission repair (soft parts) for $1650 with a 12-month warranty. For what it's worth, the TCU was replaced last spring (sunroof drain clog > flood > destroyed TCU and a lot more). Everything was working OK this spring after the repairs.
View 10 RepliesI drive a 02 Passat GLS 1.8t 5 speed and whenever i down shift to slow down it feels like the clutch will catch and then slip and catch and then slip!?!?! the car will "jerk" really hard when this happens and the front end will drop..
