Prius (2004-09) :: 2005 - Grinding Noise While Shifting / Using Brake?

Mar 9, 2012

New to me 2005 with 99k miles

I've noticed this strange grinding/clunking/engaging noise. It seems like it sometimes associated with using the brake and shifting gears upon start-up.

Toyota - Corolla :: 2005 - Making Grinding Noise While Shifting?

Our 05 Corolla, 160,000 miles, has started making a grinding sound when we upshift into 3rd, unless we let the rpms fall to below 1000. My husband said the clutch needed adjusting, but the dealer said this clutch is not adjustable. The dealer found nothing wrong and could not get the car to make the noise while in the shop. (It did actually get better for a while but got worse again almost immediately after the visit to the dealer.)

Our other car (a Saturn) has over 250K miles on the original clutch, so I don't think it's our driving. What could be wrong, and is this something that needs to be addressed soon lest we damage something irreparably? Also, this car has, since purchase, been nearly impossible to shift on the coldest mornings. Really, sometimes it is all I can do to get the lever in reverse to back out of the drive in winter (in Kansas). Warming up works, but it seems to take an inordinate amount of time before shifting is"normal."

Santa FE SM (2001-06) :: 2005 - Grinding Noise But Driving And Shifting Fine

I have a 2005 Santa Fe 2.7L engine. Right now it seems to be making a funny grinding noise in the passenger side. It's driving and shifting fine. Wheels seem to be ok. Once it cooled down the noise seemed to go away.

Prius (2004-09) :: 2005 - Clunky Grinding Noise When Backed Out Of Parking Spot

I'm not sure what the noise is, but it sounds expensive. Backed out of parking spot, started making an awful clunky grindy noise. Put in drive and more noise but no go. Put in neutral, still grinding but stopped after a minute. Pushed back into spot, waiting for AAA. Interesting it would not go into park from N until the grinding stopped. No lights on dash interestingly, except the snakes chasing your car (traction?) light flashes intermittently while it's grinding.

Prius (2004-09) :: 2005 - Noise When Taking Foot Off The Brake

I have 2005 Prius, 53K miles on it. Bought it as used car few months ago. It has been running great since then.

Since last few weeks I have been hearing a soft beep every time I take foot off the brake. Today I had my windows down while driving and I realized that the soft beep is actually a loud noise like squeak or beep. I can hear a noise every time I take foot off the brake (NOT when putting foot on the brake).

Anyone can standing near the car or other car drivers at red-light can hear the sound too.. This happens when- the Car is in D, I take foot off the accelerator and press the brake (to slow down or complete stop) then take foot off the brake.

Toyota - Highlander :: 2005 - Dragging Or Grinding Noise From Rear Brake

I have a 2005 Highlander that had repeated rear brake noise problem after the dealership serviced the brake in May this year. The sound was like dragging or grinding. After that, I brought my car back but the noise came up every time in 3-7 days. Here is the of the service record from the dealership:

5/31/2011: initial maintenance. Rotor resurfaced, pad replaced
6/17/2011: Adjustment and lubrication.
7/13/2011: Replaced the pad.
8/20/2011: Technician could not hear the noise during drive test. Ticket withdrawn.
8/26/2011: Tighten e-brake, lubrication.

Tech told me the left and right brakes were not balanced. I recorded the noise in the following Youtube video: [URL] .....

Turn volume up and notice the last two stops. What I should say to the dealership service? I plan to take the car back in a few days.

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: Grinding Noise From Rear Side When Brake

Every time I brake, there is an awful grinding sound in the rear of my truck. It doesn't seem to be affecting the brake strength, however something is obviously wrong. I have looked at the brake pads and they seem to be in good shape. I am a mechanical misfit, but I hate getting ripped off by other people at the brake shops.

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: 2005 - Grinding Noise When Turning Left

First I will start off by stating that my truck is a 2005 Ford F150 2WD Regular Cab 6.5 Bed, with the V6.

My problem is, when making a left turn at low speeds, I have a grinding noise that corrects itself upon straightening out the truck. This seems to happen on turns in the parking lots etc. It almost sounds like the tires are rubbing but the tires are the same BFG's that have been on the truck for 40,000 miles and have never rubbed. I am thinking it might be the power steering pump but am unsure. I do not have access to a lift right now but I have done the shake test on all of the suspension components and nothing seems out of place or loose.

Prius (2004-09) :: 2005 - Shifting Out Of Gear In Cold Weather?

My 2005 Prius shifts into Neutral, "N", when I put it either into Drive, "D", or Reverse, "R", during Cold weather, mid 20's and below. It will only stay in "B" to drive, and I have to hold the shifter in "R" to back up or "D" to drive. After the car warms up while driving 15-20 minutes in "B", I can shift it into "D" and it will stay there. I normally start the car and let it warm up in the morning for 10-15 minutes on cold days, below 25F but still I'm only able to drive it in "B" until it's ready. I just moved to Montana after driving this car in normal Southern California driving conditions. It happened while vacationing in Montana during the winter of 2007 a few times but it didn't bother me since I wasn't living there. I reported to Toyota but they couldn't do anything since the weather wouldn't co-operate. This car is still under 70,000 miles.

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: 2005 - Slip Or Grinding Noise When Go Up A Hill And It Downshifts Into 3rd Gear

Ok I have been trying to find out what is going on with my truck and I cant seem to find anything on here that points to all the symptoms I am having. I have a 05 xlt 4x4 with 5.4. For the last 5 months or so I have been noticing a slip or grinding noise when I go up a hill and it downshifts into I believe 3rd gear. It sounds like going over rumble strips on the road but only lasts a second. It also does it sometimes when I pull out from a stop. Also when I let off gas or brake to a stop it seems to shudder a bit.

Maybe its my imagination since I keep hearing for the grinding sound, I don't know anymore. Its driving me nuts(er). It doesn't do it all the time either. It has only 65,000 miles on it and never towed. I know I am due for a total tranny flush since it never had one. Could this be the whole problem? Iv been reading other stories that sound close to mine but they never mentioned about the noise when pulling out. Could it be the rear end? I am totally lost on this one.Other then that problem it runs great. Shifts nice.

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: 2005 - Whining Noise - Loss Of Power And Hard Shifting In The Transmission

I posted awhile back about a loss of power and hard shifting in the transmission. I thought I had it fixed, well I kind of did...... Replaced the IWE that had locked in solid. I replaced both, added some transmission fluid, new front brakes, and a new belt back in July/August. Truck was fine for a few thousand......

Well it's back. Now I have a noticeable whine in the cab. I haven't pin pointed it yet. It is only audible when the truck is running from 35-50 mph. It is not RPM dependent, it doesn't change when I take it in or out of four wheel drive. It isn't there when the truck isn't moving.

The truck has 61,000 on it. I bought it with 35,000 on it because I wanted a vehicle that wouldn't nickel and dime me. Something I could climb in and not worry about making home.

Well here I am less than 30,000 miles later and I have had issues with the fuel controller under the bed, brake calipers sticking, IWE's, new shocks, broken front coil spring, recall for the airbag, tie rods, ball joints, power window regulator, and now what appears to be a transmission.

I come from a long line of "FORD" guys, but I am seriously considering something else. This 04-08 model has to be one of the worst pickups ever built by ford.

Are the newer ones any better? Other than routine maintenance a vehicle shouldn't have to be touched before 61,000.

Prius (2004-09) :: Grinding Noise In Front End?

My Prius has developed a disturbing noise over the past 2 weeks. I believe the noise is coming from the front, driver's side. The faster I go, the louder the noise. It begins shortly after accelerating and doesn't stop until I stop the car.

I didn't think it was a mechanical noise, but now I'm not sure. I feel a slight vibration in the accelerator pedal while the car is making the noise. I'm wondering if this is something in the axle, wheel bearing, transmission, or what.

Prius (2004-09) :: Red Triangle And Grinding Noise

Basically I have two problems which will be looked at by Toyota on Friday. But I need to arm myself with ammunition in case I have a debate with the service/repair guy.

Firstly my gen 2 decided not to start for about 10 minutes and gave me the red triangle with an exclamation mark before everything went back to normal again. The car starts every time now but the triangle appears briefly at the start which I don't think was there before. Could this be the 12V battery?

Another thing is grinding noise on full lock to both left and right. What could this be?

Buick - Rendezvous :: Shifting And Grinding Noise With Transmission?

I just had all the plugs and wires replaced on my car. The mechanic said this (MAY) fix the problem.I am still having a problem with the car shifting very hard, and make grinding noise coming from the rear. It sounds like the transmission is falling out! Does it maybe the clutch sensor. I have had it to 2 shops and analyzed, and they have no clue.

Prius (2004-09) :: Grinding Noise When Braking At Low Speed

Bought my Prius (2005, with 160K miles) about a month ago and since I've had it I am hearing a metal on metal grinding noise when braking at low speed. How loud the sound is depends on how hard I am on pushing on the brakes. One of my co-workers has the same model and said that his does not make that sound. Not sure if its just because it has after-market brake pads or something? This noise only occurs when braking at low speeds (below 10 MPH) so I assume its an issue with the front brakes.

Is this something I need to get looked at by the dealership? I had a local mechanic that worked on my old Honda beater take a look and he said that the rotors and brake pads looked new and wasn't sure why they'd make noise.

Prius (2004-09) :: 2007 - Grinding Noise When Braking

So my dealer diagnosed my 2007 Prius with a transaxle issue, but what bothers me is that it doesn't make the sound all the time. When I brake lightly, there is no sound and when I brake heavily there isn't either. It is only when I do a medium brake above 7 mph of course and around 20's mph range. I am hoping for something besides the transaxle...maybe a wheel bearing...anything.

Prius (2004-09) :: Grinding Noise Coming From The Front

I've got a 2004...it has 90,000 miles. For about the last 5000 miles I've been experiencing - only a few times a month, and totally out of the blue - a grinding noise coming from the front (i think left). This happens when I'm traveling at about 55-58 mph (never at lower speeds). It even happened once when the cruise was set. It gets pretty loud, and i find that if i pull over and stop for a few seconds, then keep going, that it stops. In other words, it seems that breaking to a stop disengages whatever the cause is. Also, no warning lights come on at all...like i said, it happens totally out of the blue. No, it's not the wheel bearing.

Prius (2004-09) :: Whirring / Grinding Noise In Dash

I am experiencing this whirring/grinding noise:

Which is the same as this thread : Grinding Noise from Dash | PriusChat

It occurs intermittently when starting up the car, though if I then turn the car off (as in my video) the noise continues.

On that thread the vehicle was in warranty and was fixed by replacing the MFD touchscreen. My 2006 UK Prius is (I believe) out of warranty, and the touchscreen/MFD seems to be working fine. Is there anything I can do preventative on this?

Golf/GTI VI :: Plastic Grinding Noise When Shifting From 1st To Second On Cold Days

I have been doing some research on why my 6sp MT makes a weird almost "Plastic Grinding" noise when shifting from 1st to second on cold days when it sits overnight. It has been getting under 40 degree that last couple days and it seems to go away after just a few minutes of driving. It only happens from 1st to 2nd. I have been told its normal and just because the trans fluid is thicker when cold.

Toyota - Celica :: 1990 - Has Grinding Noise While Shifting Into 2nd Gear

got a sweet deal on it but only 1 problem with the car. when i shift into 2nd gear there is a grinding noise, however it doesnt grind if i drive super slow... it doesnt really matter if i upshift or downshift into 2nd it will make the noise either way... also the grinding noise is only there WHILE shifting the lever into 2nd gear so its only there for a second, once the lever is shifted into 2nd gear there is no grinding noise at all...not sure if this is related but the clutch pedal also feels very lose just when its about to hits the floor...

Subaru - Clutches :: 2003 - While Shifting There Is Creeking / Grinding Noise

I have a Subaru Baja 2003 with only 48,000 miles. It is a manual transmission.

My question has to do with the clutch (I think). If I am driving with the windows down and have something beside me that reflects noise ( a big hill, a wall, etc.) when I shift from first into second or second into third I sometimes here a "Creek" sort of grinding noise. I do not have to be moving the shift hence why I assuming it is the clutch. The noise is not bad, as I said I can only hear it occasionally and when I am next to something that reflects sound.

My questions are: Is it the clutch? Is it something I should have fixed or should I wait until it gets worse? I am not sure if fixing a clutch is expensive period or if there are some interim steps to a repair that prolongs the clutch and saves money.
