I'm still trying to decide whether to get a Prius. I'm looking at a 2014 new III. Question: My friend who has a 2001 Prius (whose original hybrid battery is still going strong, by the way) says that if she does not drive her Prius for 2-3 weeks, her starter battery will need a jump. Is that particular to Priuses, or do all newer cars with the keyless entry and/or theft deterrent do that?
View 10 RepliesWell my two weeks of Touareg bliss just ended with a dead battery. I guess two weeks out of car is all you can expect. I know I'm not the first... but seems pretty unbelievable in that I have never had such a problem with any other car in 35 years.
View 9 RepliesSo I went to put my R32 back on the road yesterday, it has been garaged since November. Over the winter I had gone out to start her every 2-4 weeks. She would start right up all winter. 2-3 weeks ago I went out to start her and she started right up! Then last night, I went to go start her for her maiden voyage of 2015, and boom dead. What would cause this or if I should be worried?
I would let her run for about 20 minutes when I started her each time this winter, the previous successful start was no different.
If I park the car at the airport for 10-14 days, do I need to disable the remote key fob? I could not find any information on this in the manuel. I have a Prius 2014.
View 6 RepliesI have a 2013 Prius with 15k miles, and this happened to me recently for the first time:
- Drove 40 miles
- 24 hours of inactivity
- Drove a very short distance, maybe for 60 seconds, just enough for the ICE to start
- 48 hours inactivity
- Start car, ICE starts, but sputters and sounds like an old, sick lawnmower, and dies after 3-4 seconds. The "check hybrid system" warning is displayed, and I read a P3191 DTC
- Turn off car, repeat three more times, and by the third time, the warning lights went away, and the ICE runs fine again now.
I took the car to a Toyota dealer, and they told me that they didn't see any problems. A friend of mine had the exact same problem with a 2012 Prius, after the same scenario (3 days inactivity with a 60 second trip in the middle of the inactive period).
If my traction battery has plenty of 'juice' in it, and my 12v battery is dead....is there any way to 'jump' the 12 volt battery with the traction battery to get the car started?
View 19 RepliesI have a '10 with only 4k miles, driven very little. Car might sit for three weeks and sometimes, not always, car won't start, dead battery. I have checked starting voltage and battery. Both check good, (after i have recharged battery, of course). Is this normal? I certainly hope not.

View 15 RepliesMy dad's Gen III has been sitting garaged for almost a year now, and of course the 12 volt battery is dead. Firstly, it's sitting in a one car garage, and secondly I have a Gen II so a straight jump isn't possible. I have a trickle charger that should be able to bring the 12 volt back up in 15-19 hours, but here's my question:
Maybe I'm being lazy, but I'd rather not deal with climbing in the back to release the hatch and running an extension cord so I can get the charger close enough to hook straight up to the battery..
I got the ECU Update Friday.. Today my 12 volt battery died.(got it started after a jump)..Any correlation?? Toyota service days no. Is there any kind of a warranty on the 12 V battery? 2011 with about 40k on it seems way low for the battery to die. No changes in driving habits since ECU update either..
View 6 RepliesI recently parked my 2013 Prius in a concrete parking structure near LAX for 8 days. When I returned, the battery was dead - car was completely nonresponsive. AAA had to "resync" the hybrid system along with jumper cables to get me going. The technician said it was because the concrete drained the battery. I have previously left the car in underground garages for longer periods of time with no problem. Is this an urban legend?
View 15 RepliesThe dealershhip told me my 12volt battery may be dead. the symptoms are the car has now power and the key fobs do not work. I tried jump starting last night. The first time I hooked up jumper cables up my alarm started going off. I lost connection and reconnected and only the orange light came on on the power button, and check engine light came on and green light came on on park button.
View 17 RepliesI have a 2010 Toyota Prius. The battery went dead, so I jumped it. The car started fine, but the Nav system is all black and says "Please insert Nav DVD". I do not have the original Nav DVD. How I can get around this? I've read some posts saying to disconnect the battery, but I'm not really sure how to do that. I feel like i've been through this before and the solution was simpler. In the past, I remember an option to 'skip nav dvd setup' or something like that. Unfortunately, I don't have that option.
View 11 RepliesIf my prius 12V starting battery is dead, and my keyless entry prius is locked, would I be able to jump start my vehicle when I cannot enter it to open the doors, hood or trunk ? The problem is I do not know if the keyless entry is powered off the hybrid battery or the 12V starting battery. If the keyless entry is powered from the hybrid battery, then this is not an issue.
However if the keyless entry is working off the starting battery and that battery is dead and the vehicle is locked, I do not know of how to open the door or the trunk or the hood to jump the vehicle as I cannot access any place in the vehicle suitable to give it a jump start.
My 2010 Prius with 72k miles on it. I bought a OBDII scanner and read P0401 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Insufficient Detected. The check engine light comes on for few days, then go away for few weeks and then come back again. It's been doing the exact same thing (Come on for few days and then go away) in last few months. But I do not feel any different in terms of driving.

View 7 RepliesThe battery in my remote appears to be getting exhausted quickly.
The fist time it happened was in 2014 when batteries on both remotes got spent. (for a 2011, I figured that it was normal).
I picked up a 8 pack from Amazon and replaced batteries on both remotes but the frequency of exhaustion has increased dramatically.
Last night my battery died. We tried charging the battery today and it was didn't work, so I grabbed the battery out of my IS300 and put it in the F. The car still won't start, I don't even hear the starter cranking. Not sure what's going on.
View 4 RepliesToday I went in may garage and heard a humming from the rear of my 2014 prius. I assume it is the hybrid battery. This was several hours after the car had been driven. I turned the car on and then off and the humming stopped. Is this normal? I know it is common for it to hum immediately after you turn the car off for a bit, but several hrs later?
View 9 RepliesWent out to touareg this am to go play golf...car would not start! 2nd time this happened, in 3 weeks! They gave me some BS about a signal coming from local station that puts radio in an on position waiting for a signal.
Well, I call this am to tow, the service MANGLER states that there software fix! Well, I will let them know I want a NEW battery...and the problem fixed. Also, tires a wearing a little on front after 20,000 rotation. I will see what they will do.
The battery in my 2007 Honda CR-V keeps dying approximately every 2-3 weeks. There is no electric at all; I can't use the key fob to open the car, etc. When I jump the car, it is completely fine for about 2-3 weeks and then it just randomly dies again. It always dies at the same time/place - in my garage sometime during the night. I have never had it die anywhere else or at any other time. When it first happened I took it to one mechanic who told me the battery was dying. So, I replaced the battery (this was within the last 3 months).
Then 2 weeks later the car died again. I took it to a different mechanic and they tested the battery and alternator and said they were both fine. They said the battery coils were loose so they tightened them and said I should not have any further problems. Two weeks later the car died again. I called the same mechanic back and said it died again. They told me they fully tested the battery and alternator, and everything in the car looked find so what was causing this.
They suggested that perhaps there is a light on somewhere - like the glove box - and I just don't realize it. I checked and there is no light in my glove box so that can't be the problem. I thought perhaps it was because it was winter, but now the weather is in the 40s and 50s and it just died again two nights ago. I really don't know what to do since the mechanics I have gone to say everything is fine with the car.
