How accurate is the calculation from the car's "computer" for the cruising range left?
In my experience from my previous vehicle. When my gas light would come on, I believe it generally meant that I had 2 gallons left in the tank before stranded.
How long did your car take to accurately display cruising range? I am on my first tank of gas, and even though my average is 54.5mpg, my cruising range is displayed as 380miles. That doesnt add up at all...
View 19 RepliesJust got a (second) 2012 RX350. 13,000 miles. The Distance to Empty is confusing me. Doesn't come close to matching the tank size times either the mpg since last fill-up, or the overall average mpg. Overall mpg is 17.x. mpg since last fill-up varies from 17-21. But when I fill the tank, the DTE says maybe 260. With a 20gal tank the DTE after a fill-up should be in the 340-350 range.
This isn't happening on our other 2012 RX350 with about the same number of miles.
The needle gas gauge appears to be right, based on where the needle is before a fill-up and the number of gallons purchased.
Been driving around a lot trying to empty the gas tank in my new Prius and was wondering what the "Cruising Range" figure actually represents. Do the miles listed mean I have that many miles left until the tank is bone dry, or is that the range until the tank gets to the warning light?

I just threw in a few bucks (well it's a Prius after all) and it still showed 0 as the range.
Ok, had the prius c four for a few months now. What is up with the gas gauge? When I get down to one rectangle my cruising range drops to like 9 miles. I got gas and put in 8 gallons, which means I had 1.5 gallons still. Why is it showing such low cruising range mileage? Looked through the manuals by couldn't find anything useful. Also, is there a way to see exactly how much gas you do have? The rectangles seem a bit arbitrary to me when it comes to representing an actual amount of gas?

View 19 RepliesI just got a 2009 RX 350 , and I noticed that driving home with full tank of gas that my range was only reading about 250 miles. This week end I filled the tank up and the range was only reading 253 miles, after driving about 130 miles the computer is showing a range of 208 miles, The tank is showing about 3/4 full. I am showing a average of 24 miles per gallon.

GS 430 2006 - 6 months old-
Filled up today while on a 200 mile trip and the car, with a full tank, says 240 miles left.
If I have an 18 gallon tank, that would be about 13.3 miles per gallon when I am averaging above 20 on the highway.
Does the GS not recalculate this and update it or does it use a standard MPG? Is there some way to adjust this?
Just bought a used 2012 IS-F 1-owner with 37k miles. Clean Carfax and AutoCheck - very, very clean car.
Test drove it with my wife, fell instantly in love, and signed the paperwork. As part of the dealer delivery, they gave a full tank of gas and washed/waxed the car.
While enjoying the 8 mile drive home in 5:00 traffic, regular speeds of 40-50 mph without any start/stop on the freeway and surface roads, I noticed that the range (distance to empty) on the full tank was only 169 miles!
I realize this is a hi performance V8 - but c'mon! Is there something wrong with the car?
My on-board computer is consistently telling me 75-99 MPG on trips (usually 10 to 20 mile trips). Obviously that's wrong. Could this be a sign that some system in my car is faulty? Should I get it checked out at the dealer? I don't really care if the computer estimates are off, but am just worried that it could be a signal of something worse.

The average error is -2.7 mpg and the STD is 0.85 mpg. So the error is fairly consistent. I also have shown the gallons purchased, but there is no correlation to mpg error.
I've recently had the chance to buy some 'real gas' on a few fill-ups, Canadian gas without ethanol. The graphic shows that I'm getting about 50 mpg on regular E10, but about 58 mpg on the no-ethanol gas. Since E0 has only about 4% less energy than regular E10, getting 15% better mileage doesn't make sense purely from thermodynamics.
Does the Prius computer might be programmed for E0, and therefore possibly doesn't do as well on E10? And if so, can we re-program the computer?
For each number the computer says is there an exact match to what it means for computed. For example if the computer says 50mpg does that always calculate to x number calculated????
View 10 RepliesI understand that the EPA may not consider stops at traffic lights, but when cars are stopped with their engines running, gas is still being used. I suppose this may be one of the reasons why we get worse gas mileage numbers than what they claimed to get. Or is the amount of gas being consumed extremely small and not worth adding that factor in? If you were to calculate your gas mileage with each fill-up, that is taken into consideration.
But with a Prius, or other hybrids, the gas engine is oftentimes off and not using fuel when stopped. Again, when calculating mileage with each fill-up this gas consumption is part of that calculation.
I know that you can't really calculate mpg for a car that is not in motion, but there must be a clear advantage of having a hybrid when stopped at lights, etc.
I brought my 2012 Prius in on St. Patrick's Day for routine scheduled maintenance and was informed about the recall--I hadn't even known yet. I was told it would just take an additional 45 minutes for the software update--no big deal. Except that it was.
They said the computer that was hooked up to my car crashed during the update, and my car computer would no longer recognize the hybrid system. They had no explanation for the crash and said their computer had a full battery, etc. so it didn't make sense, but they would call Toyota to find out way to do and in the meanwhile I would have a rental.
It is April 7 and I still have the rental. They said the part needed, a new computer, is on backorder. They hope it will be in by the end of April but there are no guarantees.

View 6 RepliesSo got this P0A93 code when I was driving on the highway about 65mph, scared to me death when big yellow warning light came on so I returned home and turn the car back on after 30 mins the code and all the warning lights were gone I checked under the hood felt the pump everything was good. I just got done 90k maintance on the car from dealer. So my question is that could be computer error or it could be water pump malfunction? On warranty manual the warranty for inverter with converter covers under 100k so dealer should be able to cover the water pump if it's broken? I driven the car today again at normal temperature and full blast AC on, then again no engine check light on and warning light no message.
