I had a toyota prius gen 3 last year where it had an engine knocking sound, where I tried every TSB and changed the spark plugs, spark plug cables, intake manifold, engine knots..... etc., nothing worked except the following video which solved the knocking completely with no return.

The other day I was stuck in a traffic jam - under 5 mph for at least 30 minutes.....my engine started knocking/vibrating...once out of the jam, it felt like the engine was "missing"....I took it to the Toyota dealer in town and they changed the spark plugs and cleaned the area...the car runs a little better but I was in a funeral procession yesterday and after about 15 minutes the car was knocking again. What the problem could be? The mileage on the car is 125,000 (I drive a lot!)...

I have been hearing a knocking sound from rear passenger side wheel. My car is a Toyota Solara 2007 with 87k miles on it, tires were changed last week so the issue is not with the tire. I have attached the video url. Why am I hearing this noise. The noise starts after I drive for some distance (15-20 miles), it does not start as soon as I start driving.
My 2005 Toyota Prius with 188,000 miles has a whining sound when I start and when I turn off the engine. It happens 95% of the time. The dealer says it could be a water pump.
View 6 RepliesMy 2012 Toyota Tacoma's engine knocks around 1500 rpm, going up hill and does it 100% of the time in the summer. This I attribute running the Air Conditioning, but don't know for sure. The vehicle manual states on page 569 that the vehicle can take 87 octane gas. Also on the same page, there is a statement that says: "You may occasionally notice a light knocking for a short time while accelerating or driving uphill. This is normal and there is no need for concern." This seems very strange to me, engine knocking normal? I don't get it.

Problem has been any diagnosis of the cause because the mechanics cannot agree. One has said top end and another bottom end. If it is top end when I think the consensus would be to get the present engine rebuilt. However, if bottom end then, because of the increased cost, the better option might be to replace with a reconditioned engine.
I've got a 2011 Sonata GLS with 83k on it.
Last night I was driving and started to hear a repetitive knocking sound. Stopped to determine if it was only when moving but it continued in park.
Checked the oil and apparently there was very little of it.
Don't know how I screwed that up but the mechanic heard the engine for 1 second and said I need a full engine replacement.
So, yeah I am ticked off and need to take care of it.
The VIN qualifies for a replacement under the recall but I don't know how the dealership will feel about the present engine condition.
If that's not an option, where do I even begin to look for a replacement?
I own a 07 Hyundai Sonata Limited with 31000 miles. It is 20 degrees today. When I start the car up there is this knocking sound from the engine. Once the car warms up the knocking sound only happens when the car is in drive or reverse. When the car is in park or neutral it is fairly quiet. The sounds is still there but not as loud as in drive or reverse. I have done the routine synthetic blend oil changes between 3500-4500 miles.
View 14 RepliesI took my car into the dealer to have them check out the loud knocking/pinging sound from the engine. First time, they told me that it was normal. It bugged the heck out of me so I took it in for the second time. Note: I was given a loaner to drive and it happened to be another 06 Passat 2.0T and this one sounded fine to me. The lead tech did kind of agree that it was a bit loud. So, they replaced a new fuel pump and did an oil change....?? But that of course didn't fix the issue. The noise is so loud that I can hear it inside the car w/ windows up when I'm sitting in traffic or at the light. Also at night, I can hear it when I'm standing about 15 or 20 yrds away from the front of the car.
I realize that the engines will have some sort of knocking sound (my 330i does that), but shouldn't be this loud. So, does this sound normal? BTW, the dealer told me that they contacted VW engineers and was told that it was perfectly normal. I don't really buy that!! I've only had this car for almost a month (took advantage of the CPO w/ 2.9% fin) and I don't want to have to deal with this if this seems to be an issue. I guess who does, huh?
I bought a used 2010 GMC Terrain with 28,000 miles on it in April of 2013. Two weeks after I purchased the car I heard a knocking sound and the check engine light came on. Took it to Dealer and they said the car is low on oil. They put in oil. Two weeks later check engine light comes back on. They put it through a test for oil consumption and that they said the car is using an excessive amount of oil. So they had to change out all of the pistons. One month later the check engine light comes back on.
Dealer calls GM and they say to reset computer....... three weeks later check engine light comes back on....... GM now says to dealer it needs a new engine computer. Not an hour after I pick the car up from it lastest stay at the dealer the light comes back on. GM doesn't know what it is. The mechanic at the dealer is awesome he did some research and thinks the problem is the gas. I now need to put in 90 or above so the engine won't knock. Not happy right now I didn't think that I would have to put in a high octane gas when I bought the car. Terrain owners do you have to put in a high octane gas?
When I start my 2012 prius the noise scared me. The motor shook an inch and a half first tow found nothing. It did it again drove it in nothing found could not duplicate. Third time towed and again nothing found. "It is safe to drive we can find nothing wrong". After asking for a manager and inquiring about lemon status I was given a car to drive. The service rep said a manifold would be in in about a month but the mechanic supervisor said there is no eta and we are working on it.
A week later they call the manifold was replaced and they finally duplicated the issue in one of the other three cars there with same complaint. I was getting 50 mpg until this started when I took it in I was getting 46mpg. Now after the first 300 miles since I got it back I'm getting 43.5mpg.
The issue is, when driving at low speeds, especially after coming to a stop, I hear this intermittent knock that comes from the rear of the vehicle. I am not sure if it is coming from the outside or inside, but it really sounds like it is coming from the chassis.
View 13 RepliesWhen the engine of my 2007 Camry LE V6 is cold, it makes a ticking/knocking sound. The engine has 100,000 kms on it (60k miles). The frequency of the sound varies with the speed of the engine, not with the speed of the car.
When engine is cold: The sound happens roughly twice a second when the engine idles (at 700-800 rpm).
When engine is warm: The noise is less audible. It can be heard when idled at a stop, but you have to listen for it. The noise cannot be heard on the highway.
The car doesn't burn oil, and the oil level is ok. I had the oil changed 3000 kms ago, and it is still very clean (clear). The was the same before and after the oil change.
I am wondering if it could be the lifters, bad plug, or maybe a timing issue.
I've got a 2003 Jetta with the 20v 1.8t, today I was driving along and when I slowed down coming into town, my car started making this sound that I can only describe as sounding like a tractor. It sounds like something is rattling under the valve cover.

I have recently noticed that my Azera makes a "knocking" sound right after starting the engine. It just about a dozen of fast short knocks one after another and it is gone after 2 seconds (like a diesel engine started on low temp. It appears more often when the engine is rather cold.
View 27 RepliesI was driving this morning after doing a brake job (nothing to do with the problem, just anger coming out) made it about 10 kms and noticed when i took my foot off the accelerator, the heater fan powered down a bit, and back up when I gave it gas...noticed a knocking sound from the engine...pulled into a gas station and put it in park. After a hard time idling, it cut out. I started it again and the idle was not good at all. kept cutting out. Got it going and made it home with the same sort of power issue. Tried to start it a couple times and same issue with the idle. Sputtering quite a bit and noticed quite a bit of exhaust coming out. When I backed it out of the garage, I noticed a small puddle of oil.
View 15 RepliesI've been noticing that my 1994 Ford Ranger 2.3L, 4 banger has a slight knocking sound. It is really faint compared to any other rod knock I have heard. An engine compression test shows mid 140's on all cylinders except one of them which is at 125. I'm guessing it isn't receiving enough oil. Can I prevent catastrophe by fixing this early on before a rebuild or replacement has to happen?

View 5 RepliesLooking for a diagram on 1997 S10, 2.2 timing settings? If timing is off, will the engine sound as if the bearings are knocking somewhat? I installed a new crankshaft and new bearings. Also do the ignition coils usually go bad? Should the #1 cylinder be on the compression stroke?
