I've got a 2003 Jetta with the 20v 1.8t, today I was driving along and when I slowed down coming into town, my car started making this sound that I can only describe as sounding like a tractor. It sounds like something is rattling under the valve cover.

Today I went to start my jetta, and there was a soft slapping/ticking coming from the engine. Drove a couple miles, stopped, and when I tried to start the car again it wouldn't go. Engine light was on but it was on before. Scanned and got codes for glow plugs #2-3.
When I turn the key the starter turns but the engine will not fire or tun over. There's diesel in the fuel lines and the timing belt is still turning, thats all i could really check with out taking anything apart. What this might be?
Alright so MK4 vr6 AFP engine. I did the timing chans when I bought the car around 175-180K. Car now has 224K miles on it. A few days ago I started hearing the chains slapping around. Because I didn't want to call it a broken guide just yet for tor the hell of it I took the upper chain tensioner bold out dunked it in oil and pumped it up till it was hard again. Put it back in and drove the car about 130 miles straight. I didn't hear them making any kind if noise. The next day I drove it about 30 miles still no noise. Later in the evening I whent to get gas when I pull in the drive way I noticed they were rattling around again. So the next day I drive it back home (130 miles) and noticed they were even louder especially around 1500-200 rpm.
So I took the tensioner back out and dunked and pumped it up again. It didn't do anything this time chains are still loud. But I noticed when I was pumping the tensioner in thr oil both times the air bubbles weren't coming out of the bleeder hole they were coming from the end around the piston. When I did the chains the first time I got everything from Germanautoparts.com. and I notice that the tensioner they sell isn't genuine vw part the only place I found the actual vw pary is ecs tuning and the stealership. Is it possible I just have a defective tensioner? I really want to get to the bottom of this before I go and pull the motor and find that nothing is broken. Should I just buy the oem tensioner and see if it fixes it first?
So, I have a 2005 gti 1.8t, has 110k on it, just did a 3" straight pipe, and while a buddy and I were installing my new pipe, and straight pipe, he said my turbo seals were going bad. I could get the k04 cause it handles better, or get a rebuild kit. Well, today when I give it throttle, it almost makes a knocking sound from the turbo? Not from the front of the car, but at the end of straight pipe, you can hear it in that constant spool. What could this be? Time for the k04. Car has unitronic stage 2, so it gets ran hard sometimes.

Timing chain hasn't been changed yet .. Has new spark plugs & wires ..
Water pump was replaced & pulleys look fine ..
No CEL .. Yes there's oil in it.
I get a knocking sound at idle and it has absolutely no rhyme or rhythm which makes me think it's not a valve or rod(wouldn't that make a constant noise?). The sound comes from the passenger side floor board. Only happens at idle, and if you rev the engine, it will go away. Even if you don't rev the engine some times it goes away then comes back. Sometimes I hear it when i pull up to a red light real loud & most of the time the engine purrs like a kitten. I even sat in the car and told my dad when it was making the knocking/ticking noise and he went all over the top and bottom end with a mechanical stethoscope & heard absolutely nothing. Am I missing something obvious?
My 2000 Jetta GLS is producing a clunking/knocking sound from the front end (possibly left-front) ONLY while coasting and going straight. It mostly goes away if I turn left or right and totally goes away when I give the wheels engine power or when I brake.
I recently replaced my front-left control arm due to a thrashed rear bushing. I didn't replace the bearing as I didn't have a pickle fork. Not sure if this is related.
Quick q recently just got a gli and I've noticed a knocking sound when accelerating and shifting from stops could this be my motor mounts ? I was thinking my tranny or clutch but everything runs smooth and goes into gear fine...
View 1 RepliesI just bought this 2008 santa fe with a 3.3 V-6. It has 200kms on it. Here is the problem- I start the engine, and for the 1st second of running there is NO noise,.....but a second later it sounds like a chain slapping around in the engine HARD. it lasts for about 2 seconds and then the motor is quiet. It seems like the longer the car sits,..the worse it gets. If your only letting it sit for 20 minutes or so, you wont hear it.

View 1 RepliesMy 2003 Jetta GLI was making a terrible grinding/knocking noise when i would turn and occasionally make this "Bong" sound especially when reversing. I took it to my local shop and they say my spring in the front left is "either broken or unattached" and that i need spings/struts. I have like 150k miles on this car so the timing is probably right. So my question is, how much should they charge for this? Also, what should i have them order and install? Im not trying to lower or anything like that, OEM or a slight upgrade is what im looking for....
View 9 RepliesNew to owing a ford pickup. I bought a 2002 Ford F-150 lariat 4x4 as a project truck. I've always wanted a truck to mess around with, but once I got the truck home I noticed it had a knocking sound. It didn't sound like it came from the top of the engine so I checked the muffler first and found it had a 3" slit in it. I replaced it but the sound remains. I heard it could be lifters? Is that something I should mess with or not?
View 8 RepliesMy 2005 Accent started making this weird slapping sounds last night. I hesitate to call it knocking b/c it's not that loud. It sounds almost like if you put a some cards in the spokes of a bicycle (weird description, I know). But basically the sound speeds up as I accelerate and vice versa. It started last night as I was pulling up to the house. When I opened up the hood, it sounded like the sound was coming from the top/top back of the engine. I recently had all belts and radiator (small leak) replaced about 2k miles ago. What it may be? Car only has 67k and I drive 95% on the highway at about 70mph. I drove my truck to work this morning so I don't make the problem worse until I know what it is.
View 1 RepliesI have a 04 explorer with 100k miles. I went out to start it the other day and it wouldn't turn over. It would start to crank but acted like something was in a bind and wouldn't let it turn. Finally after trying and trying it turned over one time and sounded like it had a bad exhaust leak under the car. i had the starter and battery tested and they are fine.
Finally I got the car started by jumping it off and now I'm getting a slapping sound from under the car. The oil was just changed and the level is fine but now has a very black tint to it but doesn't appear to have water/fuel in it. The explorer now starts and idles fine but does have a very noticeable noise. There were no issues leading up to this problem, it was driven parked and then the next morning wouldn't start.
I was just driving home and noticed and sort of slapping sound from my rear left tire - I pulled over at a gas station to take a look at it and found no issues with the tire itself (bubbles/flat spots) or any irregular wear, my next best guess is that the wheel bearing has gone bad, is there a way i can test this for the rear wheels without putting it on a lift?
View 13 RepliesWhat this sound is / caused by? This is my Dad's Golf, the sound subsides after the engine warms up a little. It runs fine, power and all. I took off the top timing cover, nope that wasn't it, no rubbing as the sound persisted. Thinking maybe an injector o-ring? The car has 130,000 miles and change on it.

Our 2010 Prius makes a loud metallic slapping sound whenever we drive over the lane marking reflectors on the roads.

'91 Blazer, S10, 2wd, 300,000 mi ....when weather cold, and car cold, I hear a loud slapping sound that I thought was a fan belt, but checked and they are ok...when car warms up, or when weather warm, I don't hear the slapping..... sounds like belt against plastic,,,,???

So I was on my to get some food and when started my car it was shaking really bad and had a ticking sound. I popped the hood and the engine was shaking violently, it drove fine one day to walmart and the next day started doing this. I am thinking it could be the coil pack because it was raining when I went to start it.

Every time I press the brake pedal a buzzing sound can be heard. Every single time. Without fail. Moving or parked.
I just had the tranny rebuilt and it's possible something was broken or unplugged. I've done a search on google and can't find anything specific. I'm thinking something to do with ABS. Problem started a week ago when it came back from the rebuild.
I'll try to get a video and post. Was funny at first. Now it's annoying.
Sound shown in video. This is when vehicle is idle, as rpm's change the sound becomes more frequent. Check engine came on about a week or two ago, not sure if its related (haven't gotten the chance to get it read yet).
