When I press on the gas going up a hill I hear a strange rattling sound like something is loose on my car. What this could be? I have 81,000 miles on my v (lowercase v for the Prius v wagon)
View 5 RepliesSo, I've been noticing that my passenger side window in my Corolla is being a little weird. Whenever someone opens or closes the door while the window is closed, the window makes a rattling sound. Also, when I play music in the car, the window sounds like it's shaking even though it is fully up. The other windows don't do this and it will stop if I press the button to raise the window. Another thing it does is that when the window is almost fully down, it makes a thump or a clicking noising and then it goes down. So could it be a loose window or a bad motor? Also, any way to fix this myself other than taking out the door panel?
View 6 RepliesI recently brought my 2011 in for its final service with a laundry list of issues, one of which was the tailgate panel that was always loose and rattling. Of course the dealer told me there was no problem, and it's always been difficult to isolate the source of rattles on this car since the entire car is a symphony of rattling plastic.
I looked into the tailgate panel more closely to find that the two plastic grab handles built into the tailgate panel were loose. I pulled the panel off to discover the root for the problem. The two plastic grab handles are sonically welded (melted) to the tailgate panel, (five welds per handle). Three of the five welds on each handle were fractured, (six out of ten welds had failed).
I took the panel back to the dealership and showed it to the service manager who miraculously concluded that the panel was defective, but it wasn't like that when they looked at it the day before.
My 2012 Plug-in spontaneously started making a metal scraping/rattling noise in the middle of a low-speed drive around the neighborhood yesterday. Seems to be coming from the left front wheel area. I've checked thoroughly under the car and in the front wheel wells for anything that could be dragging/rubbing, and I can't find a culprit there.
It occurs while coasting in EV mode, so not ICE/exhaust related. The car doesn't pull to one side or the other. Only 9K miles, so I wouldn't suspect a hub bearing or any other significant wear to be causing this.
Possible clue or red herring: the dealer replaced the the left front tire and did an alignment two days ago, and the noise occurred within 15 miles of driving after that service.
One thing that brought me here is the noise of my liftgate when being closed. When the liftgate contacts the latch it makes a rattle-y/loose sound. The trunk is locked and secure however the sound is very off-putting. I bought my 2010 Prius II as a CPO last year and never really thought much about the noise, only that it didn't sound very pretty.
However, I was recently sideswiped and was put in a 2013 Prius II and the liftgate closes with a solid thunk with no loose rattles. What could be causing this squeaky/rattle sound? I thought it could be my license plate frame since rentals typically don't use frames, but it seems really unlikely.
I have a very strange sound coming from the back of the car. It sounds exactly like you have a 6 pack of mineral water in plastic bottles wrapped in foil in the trunk. It makes this sound when I go over some small bumps and not paved roads. However on bigger bumps it is completely quiet.
My problem is that I do not know where the sound is coming from. I would really like to get rid of the sound myself.
Very hard to describe this sound but it is coming from under the hood and lasts for about 10 seconds.
View 16 RepliesWhen I turn my car off, I hear some rattling. Took it to the dealership many times. They hear it but can't pinpoint the problem. Had a VW specialist sent in. He took a look and saw the VF motor mounts and said" He hears it too but the mounts could be the cause". The head mechanic and service guy told me if I could figure out the noise they would still fix it under warranty.
View 11 RepliesWhen driving slow, and hit little bumps it sounds like its a loose exhaust, or something metal is loose. The sound is coming from the drivers side. What it might be, or had the same problem? Really don't want to take it all the way to the dealer.
View 14 RepliesSo for a couple months now, my ride has been making some weird noises.
When I start the car up after anything longer than a couple hours of use, it sounds as if I have a piece of loose metal banging/moving around. I hear it sporadically on shifting through the gears, and when I'm at a stop.
Car has been in to the dealer three times, and I took the foreman on a test drive...of course it wouldn't make the sound at all.
I took a look under the hood today and noticed that the coolant level is low...filling it back up tomorrow. That got me thinking about the transmission fluid....I looked and looked, and can't find the transmission dipstick anywhere.
Any clue where I can find some way to check the level?
I have a 2010 Prius, solar panels, sunroof, JBL, the works. (I bought it used.)
Whenever I go over a speed bump at an angle, or over rough terrain, there's a big clunk from somewhere above and behind me. But I could never tell exactly where it's coming from. t First I thought it might be something loose in the sunroof, but I don't think so. I made my wife sit in the backseat while I drove over nearby speed bumps, and she kept pointing toward the area of the roof that houses the solar panels. Can they come loose? Or can the roof struts come loose?
Anyway, that leads to -- my mechanic is trying to figure out how much it would cost to get in there and take a look. He seemed to think that removing the headliner means buying a new headliner (i.e. removing it wrecks it.) That gets very expensive.
The clunk is very annoying, sounds like the car is coming apart. Maybe it is!
I have 2012 aqua and it has done 12,000 KM on it. When I press the throttle further, the ICE kicks in and there is a kind of rattling sound coming from ICE at times (not Rev up sound). However, when the car is in idle , the ICE kicks in to charge the battery and that time I hear only engine Rev up sound and not a rattle.
View 14 RepliesI was experiencing a slight under hood rattle when ever the ICE would kick in at approximately idle. It would go away if the pedal was depressed beyond the point that the eco light would go off. After scouring the internet, no good answer came up. So I checked under the hood just to see what was going on. Simplest fix ever, the stick that props the hood open had become unsecured. Snapped it back into place and voila, back to normal.

Noticed engine rattling/marble sound at low RPM under load a few weeks ago. This is not just when the engine is cold or on startup. Sometimes when hot. It's also not all the time. It's felt/heard over on the pax side. Just wondering where to go (dash/engine mount?). I did download the TSB for rattling but the local dealer has never heard of it even when they asked their tech (?!? How is that possible?). It's a good dealer so that surprises me.
What to look at? No codes so far.
I have had this problem for a little while. When I would go over bumps I would get a rattling sound coming from the front end. Not necessarily big bumps. A lightly wash board road would do it bad. Tonight at a stop light I lightly moved the steering wheel from one side to the other. Maybe only an inch or so. Going in each direction I heard a knock or dull click. I got under the car and tried moving the tie rods. They seemed pretty tight. Any thoughts? I just want to be prepared when I take it to the dealer for repair.

Picked it up after 2 days and upon starting heard a very loud rattling sound from engine; as if it were going to drop right out of the car. Shut it off and re-started ok, but very concerned. No repeat of incident until this morning. Same sound at start-up (now at 12,600 miles). My daughter who was inside the house could hear the noise. I used the car the previous day, parked outside in driveway as usual. Now very very concerned.
View 19 RepliesI have 70,000 miles and this weird rattling somewhere in front, probably drivetrain, only audible at 60-70 mph, medium load, so no pinging. worse on high speed right turns, like highway entrance, and in this circumstance audible at about 50mph.
I recently did cleaning of intake manifold, EGR pipe, and TB and an oil change and no change. The noise is totally absent in city/suburb style of driving with speeds up to 50mph. what could that be? It's clearly getting worse. could it be connected to the CV clicking noise i have at slow speeds?
I searched some more and there are few threads about noise that sounds like pinging, but doesn't behave like pinging. no resolution except for the standard advice about higher octanes and gas additives:
-Engine ping under load
-Higher octane gas for fuel pinging
-Engine pinging
I had to drive my wife to SEATAC this morning. I would normally drive my car (Camry), but my trunk is a mess with muddy tire chains and the back seat is a mess with muddy dog fur, etc.

View 11 RepliesI own a 2002 Saab 9-3 with 248,000. When I start the engine there is a rattling sound as if something is loose and quiet down when the engine warms up. Sometime when I stop and accelerate there is rattling and then a lot of smoke from the exhaust. I am looking for a mechanic that specialize in Saab to get a honest assessment. How to keep this vehicle running.
View 13 RepliesI told them that my car sometimes when I accelerate a knocking or rattling sound comes from underneath the hood. I asked them to check it. I told him it sounded exactly like an older car I had many years ago which was the result of bad gas or too low octane.
With my older car I added higher octane gas (89) and the sound went away. I had a 2011 Prius before and never had this problem and I get gas at the same gas station for years.
So the mechanic test drove my car and said they couldn't find anything wrong with it. So I'm stuck with the annoying rattling/knocking noise when I accelerate (which happens about half the time), but now I'm experiencing another problem.
A couple days later I drove to get dinner. One way it is about 7 miles. Almost the whole way the ICE would not turn off. I would be at stop light, wouldn't turn off. I pulse and glided, when I glided the ICE remained on. Take my foot off the gas at slow speeds, ICE still on.
Finally towards the last 1 or 2 miles it started going into EV when i let the foot off the gas. On the way back it ran normal. It's been close to a week now since I brought it in for service and I only had trouble one other time.
