On my 2004 VW (V8) Touareg (55k miles) I'm starting to hear a ticking or flicking (like with playing cards) noise from somewhere outside the cabin when I put the hammer down. For example, if I'm at a dead stop and kinda hit the gas (for a good throttle response) my wife and I both hear a ticking noise that is making me wonder if something is wrong or heading that way....
View 8 RepliesI had the tranny/transfer case flash done sometime ago, which yielded smoother driving in "D" mode. However, I noticed that when braking in "S" mode, the downshifts actually cause the car to surge forward strongly. It's disconcerting enough that I now avoid driving in "S" mode unless I need to merge into traffic quickly; even then, I prefer shifting manually instead.
View 12 RepliesOk, I have done some reading here and from what I can tell I don't think that it is the cam phasers or solenoid. This only ticks when you give it gas. Sounds fine at idle, going down hill, anytime I am not on the gas. Injectors maybe?
2004 FX4 5.4 176000 miles....
when I'm slowly accelerating from a stop there's a repetitive metallic ticking sound from 1st-2nd gear and it goes away after it changes to 3rd. I drive an automatic with 15k miles btw. It comes and goes but when I have a heavy foot off the line, the ticking goes away.
View 14 RepliesAbout a month and a half ago my Elantra while accelerating starting to make a fast ticking noise that was noticeable from usual with the radio and Air off but not terribly loud. The car still seemed to run the same.
So I took the car into the Dealer for my usual oil change and the recall for the automatic transmission and had them check it out. I was expecting nothing major. Turns out the service manager said a control armed failed as well as a piston and the damage was done. The will have to replace the entire top half of the engine at least and check the lower parts while taking it a part. They let me drive off and said to bring it back on Tuesday. Said he will drive to the rental car place and set me up in a rental while they fix it. Estimated to take 4-5 days while further checking into it.
It was noted as a "knock" in the upper part of the engine on the form I was handed after the car was checked out. They also said they would not bother doing an oil change on the car because of this issue. The car has a little over 27K miles on it.
I have a ticking noise that seems to be coming from the drivers side of the engine. 2000 Excursion. It only happens when accelerating in every gear between 1400-2100. No noise at idle or park. Same noise when cold or warm, again only when accelerating. Goes away when you take your foot off gas. New exhaust studs, exhaust does not seem to be leaking, no carbon build up anywhere. No engine codes. Truck runs great and no loss of power. V10 with 120 k on it. Really annoying.
View 14 RepliesI bought a new 2014 Elantra last Monday. Around 100 miles (Wednesday) I noticed it was making a ticking noise when accelerating. The sound gets louder at higher RPMs and goes away when I get off of the accelerator. You can't hear it over the radio but it's embarrassing when my passengers do. It almost sounds like a puff of air escaping or something, similar to a go-kart engine lol.
Anyways, I took it to the dealer Thursday and they drove it and said the noise was normal during the engines break-in period and if it persists after 15k to bring it back and they would see if there was something that needed tightening.
Yesterday I was driving around some back roads and I started to hear a ticking when I accelerated when I left my foot off the gas pedal it went away. But when i put my foot on the gas again it comes back. You really cant realize it when you have the radio on... Ive been experiencing rough idling when I come to fast stops and quickly speed up again.
The ticking seems to only happen after like 20 minutes of driving. Most of my trips are only 10 minutes, to either school or to work so it really doesn't happen very often... Although college will start in a few months (30 minute drive) so I wanna get this fixed before something major happen.
Also on a side note, when going up hills it feels like it has delayed shifting. I really don't want to put in anymore money into this truck...already put $ into it the first year of owning it. I guess the good thing is that I got it keeping my fingers crossed nothing is wrong with the transmission or motor, what is wrong?

It's in the shop now because the oil gauge is inop and a ticking noise is coming from the engine. I only have 23K miles on the vehicle.
View 2 RepliesI’m facing what might be a major issue with my 2007 Prius, 80k miles, very well cared for with no major issues or accidents. The problem started a few days ago, when I drove my car for the first time in a week, so it had been sitting for awhile. This was after a month-long cold spell in which temps were often close to 0, with lots of snow, and I keep my car outside, which means many days of scraping ice and snow off the car with it running (along with the defroster and heat). I only work part-time, and the car often sits for a few days or longer at a time without being driven.
The problem is this: I was on my way to work a few miles away and was stopped at a red light, and the car all of a sudden “shuddered” rather violently, with what sounded like the engine revving up, then switching back to silent mode, then revving up again, and so on. It freaked me out, but the light turned green and the car drove normally to my destination. Then, on my way home an hour later, a bunch of warning lights showed up: master warning, VSC, check engine, brake system, as well as hybrid system light on the center screen (car with ! through it). I pulled over, turned off the car, waited a bit, turned it back on, all the same lights were on. Drove it home with no problems. Turned it on the next day, same lights.
I decided to drive the car around for a bit to try and charge up the battery, in case that was the issue after all the cold weather and sitting around not being driven regularly. After driving it around, turning it off, then turning it back on, the brake system and VSC lights disappeared, but the rest remained. I continued driving the car for another day, and it did that same strong shuddering thing with weird engine noises while at one red light, but drove normally otherwise.
I then researched a bit more and found out how to check the health of the battery myself by holding down the display button, turning lights on and off three times, etc. The three voltage readings were all within the proper range. When I turned the car back on after completing the battery check, all of the warning lights were gone. I figured the issue had been the battery after all and that driving the car around had brought it back up to normal voltage, with the battery check resetting the system. BUT today the car did the same strong shuddering with weird engine noises while stopped at a red light. I continued driving and made it home just fine, without the issue occurring again, but this is the third time it’s done this in a week, and I’m a little freaked out by it.
Two notes:
*A little over a year ago I replaced the original battery (which died) with an Optima yellow top battery made for the Prius.
*Several weeks ago, after a major snow/ice storm, I was driving home from work when I went over either a deep pothole or hard ice formation, and the impact was really loud and scary—I actually screamed. But the car continued driving normally all the way home, and I examined the wheel area and surrounding parts with a flashlight and nothing seemed out of place. I drove the car a bunch of times in the following weeks with no issues, so this incident is probably unrelated to the problem I’m experiencing now, but I though it worthwhile to mention.
2004 3.0L Ranger Edge, 88,000 miles on it, I am the original owner. It won't start. It cranks strongly. Usually when this happens, I have to reset the fuel pump inertia switch. This time, resetting the switch does not work. I disconnected the switch and jumped the two wires going to it, but still no start. The switch seems to work ok, in that I can reset it (a ball, spring, and magnet mechanism, I think), then shake it and the ball will come loose.
The fuel pump 20A fuse in the engine compartment is good. The fuel pump relay in the engine compartment is good (I switched it out with an identical relay that runs the fog lights without problem). I am getting spark. I don't have a fuel pressure gauge but pressing in the Schraeder valve on the fuel rail produces gas.
Usually, when the inertia switch is tripped I can get the engine to briefly start by using starter fluid in the air intake. But not this time. I do not hear the fuel pump kicking in when I turn the ignition key to the "On" position, and that would lead me to think that the pump is bad. Except, I don't get a brief start using starter fluid. The fuel filter has never been changed, but again, since I get no start with starter fluid, I don't see how that could be the problem. OBDII scan shows no codes.
I just bought a 2004 4.2 V8 Touareg with issues. Engine has oil. Tried to start it but no start. I could hear a loud ticking from passenger (right) side cam upon cranking. I removed all plug wires from right side cam and now it starts and runs on drivers side (left) only. Getting spark from all disconnected wires. Car will drive forward and back and check engine light flashes. Reconnected right side plug wires and no start.
I notice one of the plastic intake manifold arms connected to a rubber bellow was broken. I assume that's for O2 sensor/warm up so probably wouldn't prevent the engine from cranking.
What do I do next? Remove valve cover and look for camshaft damage? Bad cam sensor cause this? I'd rather not drop a rebuilt motor in it but I also don't want to throw $5k of parts at it. Car is for my soon to be 16 year old son (maybe it's safer as a four banger!).
Ford F150 truck, when starting, the starter will turn over strongly for half a second then just abruptly makes a loud noise and stops. It won't ever fully crank. Is this just a bad starter?
View 2 RepliesMy 2004 V-8 Touareg has 19000 miles. The other day I started receiving "Flat Tyre" warnings on the MFD. The warning only appears when I accellerate to about 50 mph. It disappears when I come to a stop. The air pressure in all tires remains consistent (no leaks) and resetting the TPMS system hasn't corrected the problem. What's causing this.
View 8 Repliesi have a 2004 vw passat b5.5 1.8t. i have researched what this ticking noise is but its either my lifters or my chain tensioner. it only clicks right when my car starts but as soon as it warms up the noise goes away. also the ticking goes up with my rpms and ticks faster. I know both of these could be the culprit but i am not sure.

I can see nothing really broken, but i found one of the push rods bent. I inspected all of them, and i got new lifters and push rods only for one side. I put it together, runs fine, but half an hour after, the noise came back again.
View 7 Replies2004 Prius with 109,000 miles. It's been in an accident before (and you can tell, the front right fender is a bit misaligned and the doors have a paint covering abrasions).
However, the car is making a ticking noise every minutes or so. The sound is originating in the Hybrid Synergy Drive converter inverter box and about every minute for about 5 or 7 seconds or so there will be a ticking or clicking noise. This happens when the car is idling, driving, and even a minute or two after car was shut off. The mechanic next door to the dealer didn't know what it is and the dealer is giving me a 30 day. What could this clicking be?
My 2005 Prius has always made a light ticking noise whenever the blower air fan is on. It adjust noise and speed when adjusting air speed.
I have replaced the cabin filter with no luck. It almost sounds like a leaf or paper, but I can't see or reach anything in there to fix it.
Is there a DIY write up to remove the blower? I suppose I will see if there is anything to clear out, or potentially just replace the unit.

What is that little motor shown in the still image (in focus at 22 seconds in the video) and why is it ticking? I noticed for the first time ever that it coincidentally wasn't ticking when I first tried shooting this video. After idling for a few minutes, it came on and started ticking away. Its much more noticeable when the engine idle is lower than in the video, and its more noticeable in person. The noise I am referring to is more pronounced later in the video at around 44 seconds when I go completely out of focus because I am putting the mic right next to it.
I have a ticking noise that sounds like it is coming from my glove box when the A/C or Heater is on. I think its the servo motor but not sure. I think it just started. How difficult this would be to fix?
