Farily new owner of a Touareg (Dec 06). I have noticed a humming noise coming from the rear end while the vehicle is in park. Is this normal. Do all the touaregs do this?
View 9 RepliesThis noise has been posted several times recently and I have also experienced similar sounds. Whining in the drivers side dash area. Dealer states that it is fuel pump and that it is normal. Well, it has been a lot colder here in the last week and the noise has become louder, a couple of times to the point that it was hard to carry on a conversation with someone in the vehicle.
So I started investigating and found that if I turned the HVAC fan all the way OFF, which turns the system off, then the noise is gone. So my noise has to be associated with the HVAC. Complaining of this same noise coming from the drivers side dash? Also found same noise when I would use the REST.
Just today I started hearing a whining noise from the rear that came and went. I wouldn't be worried but it was so loud that the radio could not drowned it out anymore. The noise when away when I gave the car some throttle so I am thinking its the rear diff. It was pouring down rain and I wonder if there was some part of that that could have had an affect.

I just replaced the rear pads and rotors with no issues other than having to bang the cr@p out of the left rotor with a hammer to get it to come off. Now at pretty much all speeds I am hearing a rythmic humming-type sound that increases and decreases with vehicle speed. It's not a constant hum but more like one-hum-per-tire-revolution type of sound. It is coming from the left side as far as I can tell.
Thinking I had damaged the wheel bearing (and after searching the forums extensively) I replaced it with a brand new bearing from Advance Auto Parts. I re-checked the pads, rotors, all bolts, everything is lubricated properly, etc. Just took it out for a test drive and the noise is still there. Sometimes it gets louder when breaking but not always. I rotated tires and the sound did not follow the tire. The pads aren't stuck or rubbing excessively as far as I can tell.
This sort of thing has happened in the past on the left rear. It would sometimes happen when I swapped the summer tires for my winter tires on steelies, the left rear would make the humming sound, I'd take the wheel off and put it back on 180 degrees rotated and the sound would go away. I've done that a few times too and it has not worked.
So far I've been through 1 set of tires (after 12,000 miles), stepper motor, new cd changer, trouble with TPMS system and more Now that my stepper motor is replaced (dealer said he wasn't aware of any widespread trouble with this part, what a joke) I hear a humming noise, constant from rear axle area, drowned out by engine while driving. Noise sounds like a fan spinning or electronic interference you might get if your cell phone is close to a computer or tv with volume off. I don't recall this noise previously although I rarely drive this car it's my wife's.
View 5 RepliesI have an 05 V8. When backing out of a parking spot at close to full lock I feel it binding a bit. Also, occasionally when pulling forward (at or close to full lock) it will bind for a few seconds, then it feels like it releases. I recently drove a long (10 hours) trip and when I parked it when hot it seemed to bind/chatter even worse.
I also noticed that on slow hard turn (i.e parking lot) there seems to be a low pitched moaning sound from the rear end area. It it possible it a dreaded stepper motor, even on a 05? It is an early 05. What this might be before doing this so they don't jerk me around and say there's nothing wrong.
Vibration coming from either the roof rack or rear of the vehicle? I seem to get it in cold weather sometimes or when I accelerate from between 40 and about 60 mph. I have checked to see if the roof rack needs tightening but it looks good. Of course, every time I bring in for service, guess what, they cannot replicate the sound.

View 3 RepliesI was installing a new engine mount the one on the tranny and one of my jack stands failed on me, luckily I wasn't under the car. I always put a tire under the car just in case and it worked for me, but now whenever I accelerate I have a humming/whining noise. Can this be the transmission? This is on the 07 Camry 4 Cylinder.
View 14 RepliesI have a 1993 Chevy Camaro z28 5.7 with about 135,000 miles. It made a whining/humming noise recently. It sounded soft at first, added oil the. Noise would go away. One time it got REALLY loud, spooked my girlfriend as well as me, then it stalled out and died. I checked the oil but that was fine so it bothere me even more. So I Let it sit for a few minutes then started with no problem. It happened again recently but i slowed down an it gt really loud again. Let it rest then tried going home. I was going about 75 miles per hour until it didn't want to give gas and started to stall. I pulled over and shut it off for a bit them drove it home while it did that stalling out about twice more.
View 1 RepliesI began hearing a whining/humming sound just a couple of days ago esp when hitting 45mph and then would notice as I took my foot off of gas. I had hoped it was either tire or bearing related, but Toyota tried for over an hour and finally determined it was transmission related..a new transaxle assy etc would cost a total of 6500$. However, they said they did not think I had to do anything right now as everything is well lubricated..they even thought it could remain the way it is for a year to two. My Prius has 180,000miles on it. Should I attempt to find a salvage transaxle and risk having it put in? Or should I cut my losses and given up?
View 1 RepliesWhy my transmission is acting up. its recently started humming/whining when accelerating. it sort of sounds like the power steering when you turn your wheel to far on an older car. it recently started happening (3-4months ago) and I am not to happy since its pretty much a year old. Is it covered under the limited lifetime warranty? it has 28000 miles on it, v6, automatic, and its the xle version.
View 14 Replies2007 GX470 - Just noticed a distinct whining/humming sound similar to tire hum you would have with aggressive off-road tread tires. Seems to come alive around 20mph (or at least that's when I can hear it) and gets louder with the increase in speed. As I slow the sound goes away. Only does it while moving and not in neutral with engine rev.
We bought the car at 59k and it just hit 70k . Only oil changes, tire rotation have been done since we bought it. The tires were new when purchased so they have about 10k on them. No noise when we first got the car so I tend to think it's not related to the tread.
I was planning to do the front/read diff and transfer case drain/fill. Wondering if that may be the cause.
Something else - at low speed in tight turn (i.e. backing out of garage, pulling into parking spots) I do feel some roughness - almost like the differential is locked. Not sure if that is an indication. Was thinking it may be a wheel bearing but there is no clunking when turning.
I have a 2006 lexus es 330 that just turned over 90,000 miles. My dad and I have done the regular maintenance on it so far but this weekend after a 3 hour drive, I turned the car back on and a loud whirring/humming/whining noise was coming from the engine. It gets slightly louder with acceleration, but I can barely hear it once I've picked up speed (but it's still there.) It still happens when I am in neutral. It sounds like it is coming from the passenger side of the engine. Close to the power steering pump area, but the power steering fluid is full (although it is a very dark/black color and has a slight smell...not sure if this is normal.) I'm not having any trouble or hesitation while steering. The rack is operating smoothly and it is not leaking. I plan on taking it into the shop but wanted to go in educated.
View 3 RepliesI just bought a truck, it has a whining noise while accelerating, stops while letting on the gas, does not do it in neutral even if i rev up the engine. Only whines while there is some force on it, ie.. accelerating, or going up a hill at any angle, and does it from about 10-15mph- atleast 60mph.
View 2 RepliesWhat is probably a common Santa Fe issue. I have a 2005 V6 2.7L model which has traveled 81,000 miles (131,000km). The power steering is and has been working fine, but over recent week has developed 2 symptoms :
a) The reservoir overflows (see pic)
b) There is a whining noise when the vehicle is traveling and when turning the sounds modifies to more of pressure-release type sound. When the vehicle is stationary, the noise is very evident when turning the steering wheel (See video here : Power steering noise - YouTube )
Other things to report are that the reservoir is full but has not needed a top-up for months. The power steering pump appears to be leak free. I have a slow drip from the rack & opinion area (detected at Hyundai first service - about a few drips per day and they decided it didn't warrant fixing)
I have read on this forum the issue may be related to the reservoir filter becoming blocked and this ties in with the fact the rack and pinion has a known drip leak, but I never need to top-up the reservoir.
I have a 2015 IS250 Base with TRANNY PROBLEMS
After 185 miles on the vehicle, I reported the problem to Lexus and the Tech that test drove with me said I was hearing things. Apparently there was a humming noise coming from the transmission.
The noise became evident and consistent, took it back in again, the Tech says its normal and DI engines make a lot of noise.
After six months and 2700 miles the noise became annoying, Tech said they will look into it and confirmed it is unusual. Test drove about 5 other new 2015, used 2014's and no humming noise present.
Engineers made two trips over a five week period from Cali. They changed the alternator, which at first they thought was the problem, then they started looking at the fuel pump on the engine, then they swapped out a tranny from a loaner and the noise disappeared. They took out the loaner tranny and ordered a new tranny and installed it.
I have a whining sound coming from somewhere on the left side of my Accent HB SE 2013. 6 months old...it isnt audio related, and is intermittent - sometimes I can hear it, sometimes I cant. It can only be heard above say 40km/hr... and gets higher pitched with speed... lower and whirs out to silence when coming to a stop.
It sounds almost clutch related, but my guess is fuel pump related. A visual inspection shows the belts are fine.... I tried to see if it was hand-brake related by pumping a few times before pulling off... no dice. Now I'm trying to keep fuel above half to see if that has an effect on cooling the pump....
I have a 2002 Honda Civic EX with 146,000 miles. It started making a whining/high pitched humming type noise whenever I turned. Every now and then it makes the same noise (though not as loud) when I'm just driving straight.
When I checked my power steering fluid, it was low, so I added to it. That worked with the noise briefly, but now it's back and the fluid level is fine.
I have a 2003 Explorer 4.0l 4x4 auto. Yesterday day the passenger rear tire got a flat, so I put the full size spare on, and went about my business. About 2 miles up the road is a stop sign, so I start slowing down, and while slowing down I can hear a whining thumping sound from the front of the vehicle. It wasn't doing this before the flat, but right after I put the spare on it starts to do this. It only happens when slowing down, not under acceleration.
View 6 RepliesI have a 4x4 5.2L 99 Durango. Everything was running great and the all of a sudden I started it to go to work one morning and it would not move. Now its making a grinding/whining noise when its not in park, it tries to move when I put it in gear but has the grinding/whining noise and is real sluggish. Then after its running for about 5 min it wont move or go in gear at all. I have had reg. transmission fluid changes and was running great. now this. Ive checked the fluid and its full to.
