Diuretics :: Atenolol And Bendroflumethiazide Overdosing?

Jan 31, 2008

For several years now I have been prescribed both Atenolol and Bendroflumethiazide to control high blood pressure. The medication appears to have been successful, as my b.p. is well within acceptable limits, but lately I have noticed some bouts of giddiness and a kind of 'floating on air' sensation, not unlike mild inebriation. This was unnerving, so I went to my doctor and he checked my b.p. as 110/70, which he said was too substantial a drop to accept, so advised me to discontinue the Bendroflumethiazide and return for a re-check in 3 weeks. Perhaps the two drugs working together are simply more than I need? I am aged 62, non-smoker, light drinker, moderately active (10km charity walk recently) and in good general health. It is possible that, with increasing age, my body has self-adjusted and no longer requires such a level of 'help' to sustain a safe b.p. Time will tell, but for now (and perhaps for good) the Bendroflumethiazide is abandoned, as it was apparently making me feel unsteady and occasionally dizzy. I say 'apparently', because presumably the Atenolol could equally be at fault, but we have to start our experiment somewhere.

Diuretics :: Bendroflumethiazide Having Trouble Walking And Neck And Shoulder Pain

Have been on bendroflumethiazide for about a year now and the Doctor has taken me off them 3 weeks ago. Have numb and tingling thighs which mean I have trouble walking. I am stumbling along like I am 90+ yrs old. My neck and shoulders are stiff and I have shooting pains in my right eye. Is it correct that you shouldn't take these tablets if you have a stone in your bile duct and also a pending gall bladder removal. Also I have just read that you shouldn't also take them if you have an allergy to sulfa based medication. Is this also correct?

Overdosing On Microgynon 30 - Have Affected My Fertility Somehow?

Basically for the last 2 or 3 years I have skipped most of my periods...I think I maybe have about 4 a year?

I just felt so low and scared of being alone with bfs, that i felt 'I'm due on my period. They will want sex. If i can't give it to them, the will break up with me'.

So I would keep skipping the pill...often though I would forget to take it and come on, sometimes lightly, sometimes heavily, and to force it stop early would eat about 5 or 6 pills in one go...just to force it to stop. I'm not sure how many times a month this would happen, but I mainly used the pill just to stop having a period, the day I would start one.

I know I have probably ruined my body, and my hormones to say the least are all over the place...i was super hormonal and cry-ey and jealous and just an emotional wreck.

But now I'm worried it might have affected my fertility somehow? & Maybe make it harder for me to conceive in the future. (Which is my biggest fear)

I keep getting random pains in my right ovary kind of area.

I will go to my Dr at some point, but I just wondered if anyone knew of anything.

I am also looking to come off the pill and maybe lay off of anything estrogen related/cut down on eggs too. I think my body needs to cut out estrogen all together for a while. Also, I don't trust myself not to be tempted again, if i'm feeling low about myself. I know it works, so I might do it. I am thinking of going on the implant or coil or something instead, but not sure if I should come off all hormonal based contraceptives, or just change to something else?

Diuretics :: Exacerbates Gout

I took the drug for High BP for many years at max dose 5mg/day.

Can cause awkward need to pass water at inconvenient times- but effective against high BP - in my case used in conjunction with ACE inhibitor Trandolapril with some success.

However, if you have a familial tendency to Gout (ie Arthritis in family- as a precursor) then this drug type will make Gout pretty likely.

You will not want to experience the pain of Gout, believe me!

At the first sign of joint reddening (esp. with alcohol usage) then review use of this drug. Certainly reduce alcohol intake.

It took me 6 weeks to adjust to cessation of this diuretic -with some fluid retention problems and BP surging up again.

I've talked to many people over the years about this -and the link between any diuretic and Gout seems very common.

Cancers :: Edema And Swelling On Diuretics

I have had edema throughout my whole body for the last 4 months. My Dr. put me on a diuretic a few weeks ago. It seemed to help for the first couple of weeks, but now I am super swollen again. Why would the edema come back even though I am still taking the diuretic as prescribed? They tested me for autoimmune, which came back negative. They also sent me for an echo of my heart, which came back normal. I have reduced my sodium intake and drink around 75 oz of water a day. I have reduced my coffee intake to only 1 or 2 cups a day and no other caffeine products. What in the world is going on?

Switching From Atenolol To Propranolol

I'm changing from Atenolol to propranolol having had a bit of a reaction to atenolol ( my dosage was increased and I suddenly got tinnitus and vertigo) after 18 months. Has anyone else had to do this? It took me a while to get used to the Atenolol, the thought of going through that again is a bit worrying. Ive read about the side effects ( I suppose I shouldn't have) but I want to start taking them now to get rid of this blooming awful reaction...

Blood Pressure :: Lisinopril Vs. Atenolol

I was taking atenolol for about 14 years for hypertension. I thought it was causing me some weight gain and depression. I asked my MD to switch me to something else, and she gave me lisinopril. I noticed a cough right away that even woke me up at night, as well as an increased pulse/heart rate. These side effects bothered me so much that I asked to go back to atenolol. Like magic my pulse rate went back down, into 70's and 80's instead of 90 and above. I even noticed a lower heart rate at the gym during workouts! Plus, my BP is lower than it was on lisinopril. I have read that atenolol is an older class of drug and newer ones work better, but I am happy with this for now and I don't want to switch again! I am 58 years old and work out 5X a week. My diastolic BP is still a bit on the high side even with atenolol, but systolic is fine.

Beta-blockers :: Weight Gain/loss On Atenolol Dosage

I was taking 100mg for 3 years and had tremendous weight gain and began getting numb toes and fingers. My GP reduced the dose to 50 mg and within the first month I lost a whole kilo and my bp dropped. Now trying to stop smoking too and with Zyban, and sleeping tabs I am getting night sweats and feel generally wiped out, so with gp's consent we are dropping the Atenolol totally and see what happens. Good luck to all out there who have found problems and I hope you find suitable solutions without the side effects.
