Alcohol Consumption :: Tapering Off Wine Using Beer

Okay. So the last time I posted on here I was tapering off wine using beer. That doesn't work. I had one day when I had one beer, was really proud of myself, then had three bottles of my favourite wine to celebrate the next day.

I've tried reducing my intake, as recommended by some lovely people on here. I have come down from three bottles to two. I actually had less than a bottle one day last week and felt really good the next day. Well, as you all know, the next day I celebrated my less than one bottle of wine day by drinking a hell of a lot more.

I have been to my doctor. I was told that what I was drinking wasn't enough to worry about. The fact that I have stomach problems, palpitations, night sweats must be due to my age. He prescribed me with peppermint oil!

Yes, I might be on the perimenopause, I'm 45. But I can't get any help from my GP. I have PTSD. All my GP did was double my dose of my usual medication, prescribe me peppermint oil and send me home. Is it always this difficult to get help?

Are there any other methods I can try to get off this damn demon alcohol?

Alcohol :: Tapering Off Beer / Wine - Unable To Sleep?

It gets to the point where you know you need to stop, but the thought of stopping is a major step.

Two weeks ago, I decided that enough was enough. My three bottles a day habit was starting to get out of control. I would wake up in the morning and my husband would ask me if I was okay. "Yes of course I'm okay. Why?" "Because you fell over last night." The blackouts were starting to scare me.

Sunday I decided that I would start tapering off the following day. Luckily I have a supportive husband and admitted my problem. He bought me very small lagers and printed out the tapering off method from the internet.

Monday: I had the shakes in the morning after three bottles of wine the day before. Luckily I work from home. I had six beers and stopped myself from buying a bottle of wine in the evening. Really bad sleep, nightmares, palpatations and a constant craving for what I knew would help me.

Tuesday: Didn't really wake up okay as I hadn't slept much. Started work. Had four small beers and didn't crave for wine in the evening. I felt shaky and strange. Went to bed and slept for three hours which was unusual for me.

Wednesday: I woke up feeling different. Almost human. I got loads of work done and didn't want a drink. I had one small beer with my dinner and went to bed. I slept for about four hours, had some water and went back to sleep. Amazing.

Thursday: Well I've been a good girl this week. I'll treat myself to a glass of wine. Big mistake. Two bottles down.

Friday: We're going away this weekend. I could just not drink during the week surely? Another two bottles of wine. A few shots at the local........

A week later I'm back where I started.

My problem is that I am scared of stopping. I now know that I can get through the tapering off method without life threatening withdrawals but I contradict myself constantly. My mum has Alzheimer's. I'm helping her, so I need a drink. Oh, I've had a bad day so I deserve a glass of wine, or six. My child is disabled. I deserve a drink because I've had a bad day. The cycle is endless.

I went to the GP yesterday and cried. I told him (it was a locum) that I had a problem. I explained that I couldnt sleep without a drink. I have nightmares (because of my PTSD) and my stomach is playing havoc with my life. He said, "Obviously you have IBS." I said, "Obviously?" He said, "Well yes. you don't drink enough for it to affect your stomach." I walked out of the surgery saying, "Well thanks anyway."

Sorry for the long post but I am really trying and wanted some advice/encouragement to try this tapering off again next week. Does it work? Has anyome done it successfully?

I have already applied to be a patient for a different surgery and will be honest with them too. Hopefully they will point me in the right direction.

Foot / Ankle :: Surgery For Glass Removal From Heel

Has anyone dealt with foreign object removal from their heel?

If so, has your heel been able to heal to 100%?

Are you dealing with any problematic scar tissue on your heel?

How long did it take to resolve for you?

I'm eager to get back to deadlifts and squats at the gym and hoping someone can share a positive recovery story.

Here's what happened:

July 5, 2015, I stepped on shard of glass - I was told by a doctor there was no glass in my heel - I was given a tetanus shot, antibiotics and sent on my way. I pushed through the discomfort for several weeks - finally I requested an x-ray, which showed glass in my heel.

August 5, 2015 - the first surgery - unsuccessful - about an hour into surgery in ER (under local anesthetic), the surgeon said he didn't feel comfortable continuing, as he couldn't quite locate the glass and didn't feel comfortable going deeper. He was able to refer me to an orthopedic surgeon.

August 10, 2015 - the second surgery - successful - the orthopedic surgeon said retrieving the glass was very difficult -he was "mucking around for a while" and "it was like finding a needle in a haystack."

I was given painkillers and antibiotics and instructions not to change the bandaging or take off the tensor bandage for the first 3 days. The first night was horrendous in terms of pain - my pain tolerance is pretty high - how I would describe the pain would be, an extreme burning sensation on the top of my foot (like my skin was being peeled off and then lit on fire) - I was going to go back into ER, but as soon as I got up, the rush of blood into my foot relieved the pain. So for that night, and basically the first 2-3 days, I just kept standing up every 1-2 hours to allow blood-flow into my foot. I ended up loosening the tensor bandage after two days.

August 20, 2015 - stitches removed - unfortunately I had an infection, so I was given a 7 day course of antibiotics.

Sept. 11, 2015 - follow-up appt. - incision still not 'together' and some leakage - I was told a minor infection was still present and given a 10 day course of antibiotics.

Currently...

I'm still on crutches - my heel is still tender and the skin is still somewhat open on the surface (was told it will heal from inside out) - I can't stand normally - I have some pins and needles under my foot near my toes - the skin around the heel is very tight and ankle mobility is reduced - ankle feels very weak (probably from not walking).

I'm now seeing the surgeon more consistently to have the healing monitored more closely.

I haven't been given a time-frame of when I'll be 'normal' and be able to resume my life before the injury.
As you can tell, I'm eager to get back to being mobile and living actively.

I'm just looking to hear from someone who has dealt with something similar, so I can keep positive and start thinking of time-frames for myself.

Orlistat :: Gluten Free - Can Take Wine?

I've just been prescribed orlistat completely out of the blue by my GP... And I'm also gluten free as I have a very high intolerance now. So its quite difficult planning meals but think I'm doing ok!

My breakfasts and lunches seem to be between 5 and 10g fat then main meals are nearer to 15g. Is this ok?

What if I want a skinny latte outside of mealtimes, these work out at 2.2g fat... would that make me poorly?

Also am I able to drink wine? I appreciate the calorific issues with wine but I'd still like to enjoy a few glasses on the weekends, I'm more concerned about an orange explosion if I do?

Skin :: Wine Color Spot On Arm ... Age Spot?

Did anyone ever notice to suddenly appear on the arm a small spot of deep wine color of the size of a little fingernail? Then I believe with time it turns brown. Yes, I'm a senior and I'm afraid these are old age spots, but I'm puzzled that they should appear as a wine color. I only noticed this twice in my life. My other age spots appear just brown.

Gabapentin :: Withdrawal Won't Go Away

Was on Gabapentin for a year and worked up to 3200 mgs a day. Was taking it for Osteo Arthritis in feet and knees. Didn't do much for pain so decided to get off of it. My Dr said to take 1600 mgs for 5 days the drop to 800 mgs for 5 days! This was 3 weeks ago still fighting withdrawal. It's eased up some but still have some anxiety and like pressure in my chest. Almost makes me feel short winded at times. Has anyone else had this and how long will the withdrawal last? Have heard the longer you was on it the longer it takes. Tired of it just want to feel normal again.

Gabapentin Has Stopped Working

Has anyone else had this experience?  I started out on a low dose and had great results.  Now I am up to 1,800mg/day and it doesn't seem to be having much effect.  I am actually ok if I am not doing anything, but as soon as I use my foot, it gets so hot I could probably fry an egg on it!

My story:  was in a car/bike accident and ended up with the car parked on my foot.  Broke all my metatarsals in multiple places, but things were not that bad until...SURGERY.  After finally starting weight bearing I found I couldn't really feel my foot, but it worked.  Then I had oral surgery and my world exploded.  Insane nerve pain in my face and jaw which then transferred to my foot.  Anyone else here with CRPS?

Oh yes, and shooting pains up and down my thigh and calf whenever I stand or walk.

Thanks to anyone who responds.  Especially interested in those who found the gabapentin working at first and then not and those who are suffering from CRPS.

Temporomandibular Joint :: Gabapentin?

I'm 17 years old and have had tmj for the last 3 years. i first was given numerous night splints to see if that would work, they didn't. Next i was referred to a specialist who gave me a night splint which still didn't work. From here i had xrays and then had an mri.

Right side:
There is an anteriorly displaced but intact meniscus, which mostly overlies the articular tubercle. There is thickening of the retrodiscal lamina tissue. The intercondylar head lies within the condylar fossa with a slight deformity to the articular surface. No fluid or inflammation is present in the residual joint space but there is absolutely no anterior translation when the mouth is open. the adjacent soft tissue of the lateral pterygoid, externally auditory canal, parotid and deeper face are normal.

left side:

The left condylar head is normal in morphology. The meniscus is probably normally located although it is quite anteriorly displaced extending on to the articular tubercle with only a small portion overlying the condylar head from 10 o'clock to 12 o'clock. No fluid or inflammation is present within the joint space of note with a small amount of fluid on either side of the intact meniscus more anteriorly. No oedema or erosions are present within the condylar head. The soft tissues adjacent to the joint are unremarkable.

Conclusion:

There is complete anterior displacement of the meniscus on the right which is intact. it now sits on top of the superior boarder of the lateral pterygoid muscle and overlies the articular tubercle. No current inflammation is seen within the temporomandibular joint, erosion's or bone oedema. however on both sides there is no translation during attempted mouth opening.

From here i had an arthrocentesis where he put a cortisone injection in. This also didn't work. From here he put me on amitriptyline for 2 months but that didn't help so we stopped it. 3 months ago I had surgery on my right tmj. My specialist removed the disc, reshaped the bone, and put a fat graft where the disk should be. This also hasn't helped, I am still in constant pain, m jaw locks up, migraines nerve problems and other symptoms. Because of the pain i have only attended 36% of school this year. It's my last year but i am keeping up. Because of tmj i have to stay home next year and study through distance learning for university. My specialist has applied for permission to put me on gabapentin to see if it will keep the pain at bay.

Rheumatoid Arthritis And Gabapentin

I've read some of you responses concerning RA & Gabapentin usage. I have been taking Gabapentin since 2000 for various pains throughout my entire body. I have recently been diagnosed with RA, but doctors will not put me on the required meds because I have COPD & Polycythemia which I am continuing to aggravate because of my smoking addiction. For the past month, I have had excruciating pain in my hip that radiates to my lower back and throughout my right buttocks. The pain is so bad, I have had to begin using a cane. I have no insurance. I have increased my dosage of gabapentin (which has been OK'd throughout the years by my DR's) to try and reach a comfort level of reduced pain. I counter the drowsiness by drinking more coffee to get through my workday. I obtain "pain-free" periods with the increased Gabapentin usage, but I also seem overly energetic or "excitable" during those pain free periods. (reminds me how I used to "feel" before the pain began so long ago  . .about 15 yrs already). I'm a 55yo man, have many other health issues as well, including deep depression & PTSD. Because of insurance, I'm only purchasing the Gabapentin and have also started using Turmeric to TRY to help with all the other issues. The Turmeric seems to help, so far. Is there any problem you can see with the increased usage of Gabapentin to become "pain-free" and the mood change during those pain free periods? I cannot afford numerous DR visits w/o Insurance and have to earn a paycheck.
