Hip Replacement :: Severe Pain From Physiotherapy On Other Hip

Jan 11, 2016

I am feeling quite distraught after my appointment with the physio, she assessed my penguin walking which I am quite proud of, it is a tiny bit of progress - I thought I was doing okay....I am managing well given I am looking after two young children with no help, the house and a house full of animals - she told me off for prioritising the children which is impossible for me to do otherwise at the moment.

But the worst of it is when she corrected my posture has caused so much pain in my non operated hip, groin and back, it has left me in agony, I actually feel sick.

I have never felt so despondent in my life, she made me feel terrible, and finished by saying that I probably need a hip replacement for the left hip just like that! As if it was nothing. I felt slapped by that casual comment - given what we all go through it is not the best news, and I could have done with her breaking it to me a little more gently.

Perthes' Disease :: Diagnosis At 50 - Physiotherapy Rather Hip Replacement?

After recent x-rays for chronic hip pain, (as well as frequent knee and lower back pain),, my GP diagnosed me today with Perthes' Disease. Several years ago, after a fall in a martial arts class that hurt my back. My chiropractor had x-rays performed, which showed that I had, indeed, bent my tail bone at a right angle... as well as revealing my malformed hip joint for the first time.

I am a 50 y.o. female. For a variety of reasons, my GP is opting for the physiotherapy route for treatment/management, rather than hip replacement surgery. My femoral head is flattened (the X-ray Technician even exclaimed, "Oh! I've never seen one shaped like THAT before!", and even showed me the x-ray film.

I have been doing some further research about the disease, which mentioned a link with hypothyroidism, delayed bone growth - I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism when I was about 11/12 y.o., at which time the specialist told my mum that I had the bone structure of a 9 y.o.

I used to be quite active, and used to run, practised martial arts, bicycling... Since the pain worsened and is now pretty much a daily thing, I have eliminated those activities. I do walk fairly frequently now; but, I often wind up in pain that keeps me awake at night. Now, I am curious to know how successful and helpful physiotherapy is likely to be at my age, and what I can, reasonably expect. At what stage, will hip replacement be the "best" option?

Opinions? Physiotherapy After Total Knee Replacement

I would like to ask a question re Physio.  Some of you seem to think your PT has been superb.  Can I ask what he/she does with you.  I feel that mine has been a total waste of space and I'm not sure what to do yo try to improve the angle of the bend in my knee.

I go back on Thursday to see my surgeon, it will be 7.5 weeks since the op.  I want to be able to speak honestly to him about my experience.

Today I went into town with my daughter and 5 year old granddaughter.  Hitchin is an old market town with cobble streets and lots of steps up and down on and off pavements.  I went without a stick, big big regret.  I am almost 7 weeks post-TKR.  My leg was in agony and I couldn't wait to get home.  That was really depressing as I thought I was doing so much better.

Ischial Tuberosity (sitting-bone) Pain :: Physiotherapy Aggravated The Issue

I've been having pain sitting, standing, & walking very far (at all) for over a year now. I had a spinal fusion done at the L -5/S -1 level back in 2002, & my docs keep close tabs on my back. I've had a tiny tear in the L-4 for many years, but most the docs feel my current problem has absolutely nothing to do with my spine - I agree. I have been diagnosed with a hip labral tear in my right hip socket about 4 months ago, but not bothered enough to do the drastic surgery. Doc injected left hip socket due to pain, but again, not my main problem.

I've had physical therapy (which aggravated the left socket), steroid injections into the ischial tuberosity bursa (both sides) - due to the doc thinking probable ischial tuberosity bursitis, which it is not, & am scheduled for an EMG down both sides of my lumbar spine (I hate those tests - they really hurt!). Meanwhile, I've been working with my chiropractor who does adjustments, percussion massage, iontophoresis, & cold laser treatment on me twice a week.

NO ONE knows what this is, WHERE to send me, or how to FIX it!

Back Pain :: Sciatic Pain Has Gotten Severe, Sharp Pain In My Pelvic

I have had lower back pain for years. It always gets worse when lying down for long periods or bending over for long periods. I've also had sciatic pain in my left leg for years. It comes and goes. Recently I have started to get the same pain in my right leg. The sciatic pain as gotten severe. I also have some other new symptoms. One new symptom is searing pain in my knee sometimes when I'm standing or when I bend my leg all the way in. The other is sharp pain in my pelvic area. Are these connected? Can you please possibly tell me what is going on? The only notable health history I have is ovarian cysts.

Diabetes :: Nerve Pain? Severe Pain/tingling In Feet/ankles

My 50 year old husband has been a Type 1 diabetic since he was 21. It was a late presenting of juvenile diabetes or so they said then. He has always done well managing his diabetes, wearing a pump for the past 15 or so years. In the past week or so, he has begun to have severe pain/tingling in his feet/ankles - mainly at night when he is trying to go to sleep. He usually has to get up and walk several times before he can finally sleep - he is only getting about four hours of sleep per night. He has an appointment with his dr - but not until the week after New Years.

Severe Cough, Rib Pain, Chest Pain And Anxiety

Before I start I'll just state that I'm 19 years old, slim and generally healthy. I've been suffering with a cough for 3 weeks now, and it only seems to be getting worse. It is a constant violent cough, dry, but wet if that makes sense? I cough up clear mucus. It seems worse at night, I can't lie down without having a coughing fit and the pain in my throat and my ribs is unbearable I also have awful pains in my upper back, and weird shooting nerve pains in my arms. I've been to the doctors twice, first time he listened to my heart and lungs said they were clear and said I had Costochondritis which is causing my pain. Didn't say anything about my cough. So I went back to see a different doctor, by now I was also having pains in my left leg and googling this and as always it comes up with the worst case scenario... Blood clots which got me really worked up. She told me I didn't have blood clots, just by feeling my leg and saying it was soft, and said I have acid reflux which is causing my cough and all the other symptoms. I still can't stop worrying that my cough is something much worse and I have been misdiagnosed and there is something wrong with my lungs I also keep worrying about the pain in my leg, which is getting worse... I feel as if it was just brushed off but when I read online about others who ended up having blood clots their symptoms were just like mine and I'm so scared of this happening to me

I realise I have really bad health anxiety, but it makes it worse that I haven't even had proper tests or anything done to rule out the worst things!

I'm finding it so hard to deal with this, I feel like this anxiety is taking over my life Thanks to anyone who reads this essay of a post, I feel I just needed it off my chest.

Pain :: Broken My Fifth Metatarsal - Severe Leg Pain

Ok. So i have broken my fifth metatarsal and have been put into a non weight bearing air cast for two weeks.

Due to the break, the doctor has given me a blood thinner Innohep 4500 UI to take everyday to prevent a blood clot.

My problem is: For the past 3 days my calf (same leg as broken foot) has felt like it's been cramping. Elevating it relieves the pain a little but i am required to attend my courses at University - meaning i'm on crutches all day. Sitting/standing makes the pain increase. The pain has gone from mild to severe; i can almost cry from the pain coming from my calf.

It is extremely painful when trying to stretch any of the muscles in my right leg now, Should I be concerned about a potential clot? (I do not show any of the typical signs i.e. the swelling/heat/redness) Or is this muscle related? I have trawled through the net for similar cases but cannot find anything!

Hemorrhoids Pain Or Fissure? Severe Pain

So this is an embarrassing topic to touch on. But due to my amount of pain and the lack of clinics open due to tomorrow being new years day. I will turn here for support.

Yesterday, I woke up with severe rectal pain. Today it has gotten worse. It burns, aches and is unbearable to sit, walk, or move in any way.

I just recently had my first look at it and I do have a tender lump on the outside. The pain spreads to the inside but most of the pain seems to be coming from that one tender lump. I cannot stand the pain. My only relief is a hot bath, which sucks to get back out of and Vicodin or tramadol which I have had left over since my kidney stone attacks but that's another topic.

The lump is not discolored or anything, it just severely hurts to touch and I have tried everything I have seen on the internet to provide no relief.

Preparation H, no relief.. Also have been alternating between Ice, heat and hot baths with epsom salt. Also have been using triple antibiotic cream, witch hazel and coconut oil..

I am really hoping this doesn't turn into an emergency room visit.

I just don't know if it is a hemorrhoid or a fissure or what the difference is between the two or how to even treat this issue and earn some relief.

Physiotherapy For Vestibular Dysfunction?

After my ENT said my vertigo/dizziness was caused by BPPV, I was sent to see a physical therapist. The PT did a lot of testing and actually ruled out BPPV (which I suspected would happen), and said I most likely have a unilateral vestibular deficit. (I had a bad sinus infection a few months ago that took forever to get better which caused some ear issues, including diagnosed Eustachian Tube Dysfunction). She explained things very well (much better than my ENT ever did...) and has started me on some therapy exercises to help me get used to/help make the vertigo better.

Has anyone else gone through this type of physical therapy? Has it worked in helping you feel better (less dizzy/vertigo)?

FlatFoot :: Reconstruction Or Physiotherapy?

I'm 16 years old and have severe flat feet. i have a lot of pain in my feet, legs, knees, hips and back. i started to go to physiotherapy and the doctors said i had the worst feet he had ever seen (he was surprised i could still walk) i then went to one of the best orthopedic surgeons in my area. after looking at my Xrays he said that there were 2 options 1. surgery and 2. intensive physiotherapy. my parents decided that surgery would be a better fit as physio may not work. after getting an MRI the surgeon has again returned with 2 options surgery or orthotics. my parents now want to see if orthotics will work. But i want the surgery i have had 3 sets of orthotics already (custom made) and they don't seem to work. i really want the surgery and i don't know how to tell my parents i am going into grade 12 (senior year) and my parents believe it will affect my studies but i have maintained good grade. should i have a say? how can i convince them to get the surgery?

Physiotherapy To Get A Good ROM After Humerus Fracture?

On January the 19th I broke my humerus - transverse fracture, slightly not aligned -(I'm 23). I had a surgery after a couple of days with percutaneous fixation with wires, then I was put in a sling for over a month. About two weeks ago I removed the wires in day surgery and was told to try and remove the sling and make some pendulum exercise with my arm.

At the moment I've recovered the elbow movement nearly at 100%, but I can't raise my arm nor move it anywhere. In a couple of days I'll have another X Ray, then an orthopedic examination.

I think and hope the doctor will tell me to start physiotherapy... I'd like to ask you how much time I will need to recover a good range of movement for ordinary life activities (like driving, wearing normally, running)

Arthritis :: Severe Joint Pain

I have had moderate to severe joint pain since April, and was recently diagnosed with Parvovirus B19. Apparently the virus can cause severe Arthralgia that lasts upto 9 months. On good days my pain level is at a 3. On bad days it will go upto a 6/7. Yesterday I stepped on a metal wire and it got stuck in my foot. The urgent care center recommended I get a tetanus shot, since I have not had one in over 10 years. I asked what the side effects were, and they said my arm would be a little sore.

Well, " a little sore" does not quite describe it. My arm was in excruciating pain all night and still really bad today. I can't even lift it more that a couple inches. Also,  all my joints on my left side ( side I got the shot) were in excruiating pain 8-9. I just sat in bed and cried last night. I took 3 tylenol arthritis's and an extra Meloxicam that I have for joint pain and it did nothing, My arthritis continues to be really bad today. I called the urgent care and asked if I could come back in to get some medication to work until the pain stops. They said they could not do that, and that the tetanus shot would not aggrivate arthritis.

Let me know if anyone else has experienced worsened arthritis symptoms after a vaccination or shot. I wanted to get the flu shot soon, but I am scared now. Can the Flu shot make me hurt this bad as well? Let me know If I should tell the doctor and ask for additional pain medication. Or if the doctor will just tell me " No".

Dental Abscess With Severe Pain

i first saw signs of a dental abscess around three months ago, so made an appointment with my dentist, he then told me that 4 needed to come out, prescribed me antibiotics and then stated that a referral form would be in the post to undergo sedation to have them removed, 4 weeks later attended clinic for a consultation only, appointment made for a further 4 weeks away for work to be carried out, this last week has been hell i've not slept or eaten now for 4 days and spent the whole of sunday ringing numbers try and find an emergency treatment, even the NHS were no help, monday (today) contacted my dentist at 9:30AM for an emergency appointment, told they were 2 dentists down so no appointment could be given today, contacted the emergency NHS dentist and was basically told they would offer no help as i was booked in for work to be started at another practice to which is still 10 days away, is this what i've worked for all my life and paid into the national insurance, on sunday i was actually told by an out of hours NHS service that if i paid privately i would be seen to right away, unfortunately im not rich enough to have that privilege so here i suffer waiting another 10 days for treatment, i was taking paramol only to discover that paramol can actually increase the pain, so now im taking regular paracetamol and ibuprofen, this seems to be working

better but i still cant sleep or eat due to the pain, any advice that anyone knows of that i can use to get this sorted sooner than in 10 days would be great because as of yet the NHS has offered no help whatsoever or my dentist for that matter

Gallbladder :: Severe Pain After Removal

I had my gallbladder out a month ago after only a few weeks of severe pain, which I know is lucky compared to a lot of others. No stones were found. My HIDA scan found my function at 28% and I started vomited three days before the removal. Surgery went perfect and for the first days after, I slept and walked and took my pain pills and ate normally, although low fat.

Two weeks ago I began having severe pain in the RUQ, right where the pain initially began. My surgeons office suggested OTC painkillers (Advil, Tylenol, and Aleve). I tried all of them separately for a few days and they did nothing. A trip to the ER (no X-rays or anything were performed) said it was a muscle strain. I'm still having the same pain and I think my surgeons office is kind of blowing me off. Also, my acid reflux got about 100 times worse, and I have a bravo probe coming up and have had constant diarrhea since surgery.

Has anyone else had this pain after a normal surgery?

Hemorrhoids :: Severe Pain And Fever

I believe a have a hemorrhoid. There is a rather large, hard bump under the skin just forward on the anal opening (1/2 inch) and a little to the left side. It started about 5 days ago with a slight irritation. Two days ago the bump grew and it became uncomfortable to sit. Yesterday and today the pain is unbearable. I have trouble turning in bed, sitting up, sitting on the toilet, or just moving about. This morning I noticed pinkish fluid discharge and I thought the hemorrhoid burst. The pain is even worse and I have trouble urinating and I have a fever. I've had this before in the past and it always burst and the pain went away immediately. However, this time it's a little different. Could it be something more than a typical hemorrhoid? I'm in Thailand and the medical quality is, well, I rather be back home at this time.

Sciatica :: Severe Pain Has Me In Tears

Typically, I am up at gone three in the morning, unable to sleep because of the discomfort I am in. OK, who am I kidding with "discomfort" here? I am in agony as usual and I feel completely alone and unsupported.

I am lying on the sofa, on my left side because I cannot bear for anything to touch my right side. My long-suffering partner is asleep in our bed – the bed I have not been able to rest in for almost six months. Every night I lie here, biting on one of my many pillows to try and stifle the screams (yes – screams; I do not exaggerate here) so that I don’t disturb him. There’s nothing he can do and he has to go to work, especially since I cannot and someone has to pay the bills.

I have lost my job, I have not been outside for four months, other than to go to see my doctor and then it’s a cab each way. I’m alone, almost every day, all day. I feel like nobody understands and I am trapped in this situation with no hope for escape and a lifetime of torment in front of me – I cannot see any light at the end of this tunnel of misery.

This pain has been going on for two years now and has built up from a nagging ache in my lower back to this indescribably intense suffering that has become unbearable.

I don’t think anyone is ‘getting’ how bad this is for me. It took months to get a diagnosis and any kind of treatment despite repeated trips to the surgery (I have only been receiving prescribed medication for two months).

I am seeing a physiotherapist and I am trying to do the gentle exercises she has given me but honestly, it’s hard. I am waiting for a MRI scan and two months in, I’m beginning to lose hope I will get one any time soon. I am on 100mg of Tramadol four times a day, 400mg of Ibuprofen four times a day between the Tramadol and 600mg of Gabapentin three times a day.

I am still in utter torture with pain running from my right buttock all the way down my leg to my big toe. I cannot sit down and, as mentioned previously, I have to lie on one side to even get a small shot at comfort. At least the excruciating calf and thigh cramps have stopped (I think the Gabapentin helped there).

But even with medication, the pain has me in tears, screaming and blinded by sweat for hours at a time. Brief moments of respite come maybe for an hour here and there but I am still acutely aware of the pain running down my lower right side all the while.

I have an appointment with my GP tomorrow. I want to tell him that my pain is so bad I would rather be dead and to please, please, please hurry up and find out why this is happening to me but, I’m not sure how to approach this without seeming hysterical.
