Oxytetracycline For Chest Infection?

Oct 21, 2008

My GP has given me Oxytetracycline for a chest infection... just thought I'd have a look on here as I'd not been prescribed them before and it appears that they are to treat acne and other skin conditions?

Has anyone been prescribed them for a chest infection or similar?

Asthma :: Chest Tightness At Start Of Cold /chest Infection

I'm 60, had asthma for just over 3 years, which started after a persistent bout of bronchitis. I take Seretide twice daily. I try to run regularly when I'm able, but I'm never quite sure how I should respond at the onset of normal cold symptoms. Once I have any degree of cold infection, I regularly experience chest tightness and discomfort immediately, almost before any cold symptoms have established. I'm not really sure what the best strategy is to get rid of the chest tightness, prevent the cold developing and enable me to continue exercising. I try increasing my inhaler dose, take extra vitC, etc but without great success. I'd really value hearing how others deal with this, is it just a case of putting up with it, or should I be able to nip it in the bud?

COPD :: Drastic Decline After Chest Infection

Looking for some insight for my dad who was diagnosed with emphysema some years ago now. Until Christmas 2014, he was coping very well, he was staying relatively active and was managing to walk a mile when needed (slowly and it was flat, but nevertheless he did it!). Just after Christmas he caught a rather nasty chest infection, which the doctor diagnosed as a virus. That stayed around for 3 months or so and was obviously very distressing at the time and really affected his ability to breath. He has been clear of any infection now for 2 months but we are not seeing any improvement in his breathing ability. To give an indication of the decline, he is now unable to walk the 8 metres or so to the bathroom without oxygen. There are further complications in that his heart is also playing up and his ankles are terribly swollen. The doctor has ordered a heart rate monitor for him but I'm not sure when that will arrive. I have two questions for any friends out there who can provide the benefit of their experience. 1) Is it reasonable to expect that my dad should recover a little better than he has so far - that he should get closer to his previous breathing ability. 2) I'm convinced that the heart and water retention round his ankles problem is caused by a lack of oxygen in the blood due to his poor breathing. Is that a reasonable deduction and is there any advice out there, (I'm in the process of convincing my dad to use his oxygen more).

Pleural Effusion :: Viral Infection With Chest Pain

I have had a viral chest infection for 10 weeks, have just gone back to work part time after 6 weeks off sick. My cough went weeks ago but I still feel unwell (which varies day to day) with lung pain (worse when I lie down, walk, bend etc) and ringing in the ears.

I am worried about how long it is taking to get better, the Doctor gave me nothing apart from painkillers and said it is just a nasty bug. I am also worried whether going back to work was the right thing, do you think it will make it worse?

Chest Pain :: Sensation Of Food Being Stuck In The Throat/chest

I am experiencing the sensation of food being stuck in the throat/chest, as if you swallowed a large pill and it is resting there. I have had acid reflux issues and take Zantac for it (previously Prilosec) and neither of them helped much. It's difficult to swallow and I also feel like I need to burp to relieve some pressure build-up in my throat/chest.

I woke up out of sleep last night and felt this sensation severely along with stabbing pain in my upper abdomen the radiated up to my chest. There's dull pain in my lower back as well along with nausea, trouble getting a full breath. It's extremely uncomfortable and concerning. It seems to hurt more when lying down, but I feel it when I'm upright too.

I'm waiting on a referral to see a Gastroenterologist to discuss my very extensive list of symptoms.

I understand that it anxiety could add to the pains I'm feeling, and I do have extreme anxiety when it comes to my health, but what I'm worried about is that I woke up out of my sleep with this pain to where it can't be directly caused by anxiety. I've been to the hospital for chest pains a couple of occasions and they ruled out everything but anxiety. So trust me, I know what anxiety can do.

Anxiety :: Heartburn/chest Tightness/cramping In Chest From Meds?

I'm 29, mostly healthy, unfortunately I'm a cigarette smoker but I am a hypochondriac and suffer from bad anxiety. The past 6 weeks have been tough. I just recently got off Xanax after 5 weeks of daily use for panic attacks and sleep. I was taking about .25 to .5 a night. Quit last Tuesday only withdrawal symptoms was insomnia and a little night sweats. Head feels a lot clearer and I feel better. I'm now taking lexapro which I've now been on for 3 weeks. I do feel it's helping a bit and I also up the dosage from 5mg to 10mg. I'm taking trazodone for sleep also. But In the past 2 weeks I have been getting some chest cramping. Tightness in the center of my breasts, little pains here and there but I can't figure out if it's heartburn, acid indigestion, or what it can be. I know anxiety can give u tightness in the chest which I have felt many times but the cramping and tightness freaks me out! The hypochondriac part of me keeps thinking I'm having lung issues or heart issues. It's like if it ain't one thing it's another with me. And I hate it. Does anyone have anything like that from meds? I need some reassurance. I'm going to call my doctor tomorrow to make sure it's just from the meds.

Oxytetracycline Will Work For My Acne?

I am 20 and have been suffering with a bad experience with acne since I was 14.....the main area i have acne is on my shoulders and back......it really brings me down and stops me from ever wanting to take my top off! I have also lost a lot of confidence as i think ppl will look at me in a bad way if i take my top of as ppl tend 2 think if someone has spots they must be dirty!

I have used many different creams in the past which were prescribed by my doctor but none of them worked! since october 2009 I have been taking Oxytetracycline, I take 4 pills a day, since taking the drug i feel like i expect my skin to clear up quickly but have had no luck....I have good days and bad at times I can have very BIG spots on my back, giving me trouble when trying to sleep at night. I am no unsure if i need to give it time or is the drug just not working for me? I have been on them for more than 3 months.

It is more annoying as I have a holiday booked for July and want to be able to take my top off an go swimming but if my acne remains the same i will have no choice but to stay covered up or cancel my holiday.

Oxytetracycline Bad Side Effects

I used the tablets for 5 months and a bit, should be taking it for 6 months but i decide to give into not taking them due to really bad side effects.

When i started, i took 2 TWICE a day for 4 months but, rashes appeared on my cheeks, completely red and skin dried also on my nose. I couldn't bear the suffering, i applied creams like E45 (made things worse for me) then i switched to sudocrem, applying it to my face where the rashes were. this seemed to help stop the rash from getting any worse. I went to see the doctor who said i should cut down on the tabs to 1 Twice a day so i finally started to heal from the rashes. I carried on using the tabs this way until the rashes appeared on my nose again, it was really bad.

To those who suffer from Eczema, be warned as this course may effect it, making it really bad. This is the reason why i have to quit from this 6 month course (am finishing on 5 and a bit months) As for acne, it helped clear it up nicely even old scars until a point where my skin could heal no further ( i stayed the same after the 3rd month) so hopefully, changes are permanent and my side effects will go away from stopping this course.

Perioral Dermatitis? Oxytetracycline

I've just been diagnosed with a suspected case of perioral dermatitis (a rash around the mouth, including under/around the nose a.k.a POD) and have been prescribed 2 months worth of oxytetracycline tablets, 4 a day. i notice it had helped a lot of people suffering with acne, but i was wondering if anyone else has had the same problem and/or been given these drugs...did they work for you?

it's such a depressing thing to suffer with, i've had it for around 5 months (on and off)...i was given a steroid cream at first which helped a bit but then made it ten times worse. i was then given ketoconazole cream (for yeast/bacterial infections) which got rid of around 95% of problem...ofcourse, at the time no-one had mentioned POD so i continued to use make-up which has now flared the rash once again. tried the cream again but this time it hasn't worked. after seeing yet another doctor, she said it could be POD and like i said, has given me oxytetracycline and said i won't see an improvement for around 4 weeks. sofar, taken the tablets for just over a week....and it seems to get better, then get worse....i don't know where i'm going wrong as i've made life-style changes to hopefully get it better (e.g. changing to a non-fluoride toothpaste, wearing oil+colour+perfume free moisturizer and sacrificing make-up all together!)

Norethisterone To Delay The Periods With Oxytetracycline?

I am currently taking oxytetracycline to help to reduce a persistent problem I have been having with spots and boils. I have noticed some improvement. In a couple of months I am due to go on holiday and my period is due while I am away. My periods can be really painful and leave me feeling faint for several days. I will be spending a long time travelling so having to go through my period on holiday would be a nightmare. In the past I have used Norethisterone to delay the period successfully with no problems. However I have been advised by my doctor and the pharmacist that I should not take these two drugs at the same time and I don't know what to do. I do not need to use the drug as a contraceptive merely to delay my period. I don't really want to come off the antibiotics for the sake of a holiday but will absolutely dread going if I cannot find a way to delay my period.

Oxytetracycline Is Making My Acne Worse?

I've suffered from bad acne from the age of 18 and previously I have been on a course of Tetralysal combined with the contraceptive pill Dianette which did really work wonders. However they did take about 12 months to work and after a while my skin became almost immune to the Tetralysal. I was off Tetralysal for a while and when I went back on it recently I did notice some difference but I felt that it just wasn't doing enough for me. My GP has now prescribed Oxytetracycline and after only taking it for 2 weeks I have noticed large painful boils on my chest and back (I have not previously suffered with this) and the acne on my face is now more painful and seems to be more red and aggravated.

Is it a case of 'it will get worse before it gets better' and I should wait it out for an improvement? Or is this a sign that Oxytetracycline isn't for me and should I go back to my GP even though it's only been 2 week?

Obviously the worsening of my skin doesn't really do much for my confidence and I do feel that it is getting worse day by day. I'd rather nip this is in the bud now if the medication doesn't work for me before my skin gets much worse.
