I have been giving blood since March of this year. Since I am a vegetarian I regularly get a yearly blood panel to check if I am not lacking any nutrition. I noticed that since last year (September 2013) my ferritin levels have dropped from 84 g/l to 29 g/l . Should I be worried ? Is this likely to come from the blood donation or mainly from my diet?

View 4 RepliesI am hypothyroid/hashimotos. I have been experiencing significant hair loss for over a year. I'm young and female so having sparse hair is NOT ok. I've read one needs to have their ferritin at 70 or 80 to experience hair regrowth. When I first met with my naturopath and got diagnosed this year I was put on 25mcg of Levothyroxine and I told her my main concern was my hair loss. My ferritn was at 32. I was put on a daily elemental iron supplement.
A blood test a month later and I was already at 54! Two months after that i was at 68.3! I was getting close to my goal but at that test she didn't like how my iron and iron saturation went too high/out of range. So she told me to only take my iron pill ever OTHER day and lo and behold two months later my ferritin was down to 45.1. Super frustrating. I am trying to bring my iron UP! So how does this work? How can my iron and iron saturation be so high and my ferritin so low? Is it actually dangerous for me to take the pill daily if my iron saturation and iron are above the limit? I'm not going to be able to fix my hair loss and bring my ferritin up if I am only taking it every other day! HELP!

View 9 RepliesOkay, so a little over 4 months ago, I donated my left kidney. For the past month, I've been having a slight pressure (not quite pain) in my right lower back area, where my one kidney is. I just had a checkup a few days ago with urine and blood tests, and I have seen the results. There is no indication that anything is wrong though. Maybe they missed something? I forgot to mention this to the kidney doctor during my appointment though.
View 1 RepliesI was diagnosed with Hemochromatosis over 1 years and undertook regular blood lettings until my ferritin dropped from 700 ish to 35.
The reason I knew something was up was because I was tired, stressed and my emotions were just not what the use to be. I also felt as if I was in a constant brain fog.
However, even know with my reduced levels I don't feel great. I have undertaken some EDTA Chelation and feel great when this is done, having checked my bloods before and after - this reduces my iron, ferritin and Transferrin Saturation.
Is there a way to reduce TS to normal or near normal levels.
I donated platelets back in March and I just got a letter in the mail the other day saying that I am no longer eligible to donate blood because I tested reactive to the anti HIV 1/2 test, but tested negative on their confirmatory test (they didn't specify what their "confirmatory" test was)
I have never had a blood transfusion, never used IV drugs, and my one and only sexual partner is my long term boyfriend (we have been together for over 7 years, always wear condoms, and we were each other's first partners). I live in the US.
I do have piercings, the oldest one I got in 2010, and I gave blood after receiving it without a problem. I also had my wisdom teeth extracted last March and I did get a flu shot in September (6 months before the donation)
At the time of donation I was sick, I had a bit of a head cold but I was on my way to recovery (but still sick..)
Could the fact that I had a head cold (stuffy/runny nose, sore throat, cough, fatigue) during the time I was donating cause a false positive?
I can find information on high white count and enlarged red blood cell separately. I can not get the information on combination of both. I see a Hematologist/Oncologist tomorrow. I need to be prepared if I am going to labeled an alcoholic. Anyone have both of these issues?

View 1 RepliesI was on diltiazem (cartia) for several years. It eventually raised my blood sugar level and I was diagnosed with diabetes 2. My blood pressure was not going down, so they took me off diltiazem 240mg, and put me on lisinopril 5mg.
The lisinopril gave me a dry cough, so I was put on losartan 25mg. I asked why not 5 mg and my NP told me because it doesn't come in 5mg....
I had this stool with bright red blood yesterday and today. I couldn't tell how much blood there is but the water became bright red with 50% visibility (I looked at the stool ). I don't feel any pain and I feel nothing at all on my body. The day before I had the stool with blood, I drank four cups of green tea. I know tea is acidic but I am not sure if this is the cause of it. My urine is fine and without blood.
View 1 RepliesI gave blood mid January 2014 after registering some high blood pressure readings ( systolic up around 155) and reading saga study results suggesting benefit. I had previously tried reducing this through more exercise, and eating more healthily. Initially after giving blood the systolic remained elevated at 160. However it later reduced to 135. Three months later my BP is around 88/138 - so still a little on the high side, but still much reduced from the elevated levels previously.
Also taking CoQ10, but not eating a very good diet.
Anyway - just for those who are interested giving blood (especially for men who drink too much), can help.
I have really bad cramps and they would stop, go away then come back. Then the morning of the next day after my period. I woke up to Painful abdominal pains worse than regular period cramps and it felt like i had to Pee severely bad. Once i reached the washroom a huge blood clot had came out. Just like Fell into the toilet. I had Brown period blood after, And now that the "thing", Huge blood clot is out the cramps went away. and now my period just continued like regular. i just wanted to know if this is just a huge blood clot or a miscarriage/ threatened baby. I am sexaully active as well.
View 1 RepliesWeekly blood removal was ordered by my hematologist. Being needle phobic I knew it wasn't going to be fun. Since being misdiagnosed since 2007 my iron levels were greatly increased. After going for my first blood removal, I was concerned since after trying both arms, they were unable to get the 500 ml due to the thickness of the blood and the small veins, I believe they were only able to get 50 ml Has anyone else experienced this? Or does anyone have any recommendations on how to get more blood out?

View 1 RepliesI have some questions and I think I'm in the right place. My BP has been high for quite a few years. My old GP of 20+ years tried different meds but they all made me sick.Except Diovan, which I have been on for a long time but it stopped working. I am really sensitive to all sorts of stuff. He just retired and a kid fresh out of med school took his place. On my first visit, my BP was 211/90 and he freaked out and insisted I be admitted to the hospital for a few days. I refused and said lets just try a new med (or two) before we get too drastic. He agreed but wasn't happy. He gave me Amlodipine and that was the worst thing I've ever taken. I was short of breath, heart pounding, dizzy and weak and nauseous. Could barely get around. I thought I would die. It lowered my pressure to 180/90 and that was it. I stopped it after 10 days and told him I had too many side effects and it didn't work. I brought my BP monitor in and showed him. He acted like I was crazy for stopping it. Practically said it was all in my head. I said go tell that to my husband. He had to drive me here because I am too out of it to drive. He just shook his head and said OK let's try Clonidine. I said OK but only after this has cleared my system. It took 3 weeks. I'm not kidding. So I started the Clonidine 0.1 3xday. It worked good for 3 days. Pressure went down to 158/70. pulse down to 54. It's normally around 60. I was so out of it, I slept for 4-5 hours during the day and an hour after dinner. Dizzy and headache but no nausea or diarrhea. About 6 days later it stopped working. Pressure back up to 211/90 pulse back to normal (60). Blurred vision and headache. Still falling asleep all the time. Can't read, can't drive a car. Having trouble typing this actually. I sent him a fax this morning and told him it stopped working and I need to wean off. He called me right away and told me OK.. no need to wean off it. What? All I need is a rebound and my BP will be deadly (as if it isn't already) So he told me cut back to 2xday for a week and then 1x day for a few days. Then he said you need to try a Beta blocker and said metoprolol and he wants me to see a kidney specialist. Now I'm really scared and my BP is probably sky high. I'm too afraid to check it. My kidneys didn't look all that good on my last blood work so that's probably the problem. I've heard about stents but haven't found anything on these boards. I'm also worried about taking the Metoprolol in case it lowers my pulse way down. Oh, and he said there is no need to wean off that if you have too many side effects. I'm starting to think he wants me to die. I would like to force feed him some of this stuff.
A few things about me. I'm 67, have type 2 diabetes and have been on a low carb diet for 4 years. Blood sugar totally controlled. I weigh 115 lbs. I'm a nature photographer and WAS very active. I've been practically bedridden for the past 2 months on these meds and missed the entire fall bird migration, which is very upsetting. My husband took me birding last week and I fell asleep for most of the 3 hr. trip.
I am truly nervous about taking the Metoprolol. Anyone have any ideas? Also if anyone knows about kidney issues and HBP I would appreciate it. Thank you all so much for being here!
