I got a 1990 bmw 735il and I'd like to know how to properly switch from automatic to manual on my transmission it has the switch A to M but I don't know if the car has to be turned off or on, cause I don't want to do it the wrong way

View 15 Repliesmy 2002 Hyundai accent with 1.6 engine and the manual transmission has a problem in that where the axle shaft goes into the transmission is very loose. the problem is in the transmission, not the axel. Is there a bearing in the transmission for this. Or is there something else that could do it.

I don't love automatics. With a manual trans, some new gears and the dully conversion this thing would be like driving a giant sports car. Any computer related problems?
We have a 2003 Honda Civic EX with a manual transmission (5spd). Two of my daughters are close to getting their drivers license, however, they don't drive stick and are hesitant to learn how. My wife is asking me how difficult or expensive it would be to have an automatic transmission placed in the car so they can use it. The car is in excellent shape. It only has 67,000 miles. Is this feasible? Why or why not? If it is feasible who could do it?
View 19 RepliesIn my 1999 Ranger, I can flip the air outlet switch to cause the air to exit either up, down, or straight out -- except that most of the time the air WILL NOT come straight out the dashboard ducts. I am assuming that there is some kind of diverter valve inside the dash that is intermittently working, but I do not know how to get to it. Do I remove the radio panel? If so, how? Or is there a way to get to it some other way, like from underneath or through the glove box? Does it just need a shot of WD-40 to free it up?
View 7 RepliesBmw 735il 1988 : Car has been sitting for 4-years I have done all the maintenance including the Valve adjustment .012 cold. I hear a louder then normal ticking in the valve train seems like its coming from the intake side towards the rear. I double checked all the gaps several times and they are correct. Could this be a carbon build up, plugs were black due to a bad coolant sensor everything tune up related has been replaced. Before the adjustment I started the car for a few minutes and did not hear the ticking, does it need to go for a long drive or am I missing something? Is there a way to narrow with valve is causing this, could it be the oil tube blocked on the rear section? Can I remove the valve cover and observe with out taking an oil bath?
View 3 RepliesI have a legacy. Notice some slippage between 2nd and 3rd and 3rd and 4th. Also noticing an extreme burning smell when vehicle first gets started (for about 15 min) it's gagging it's so strong and pours in through defrost but can be smelled standing outside car also. Finally I parked in friends garage and notice some dark weird colored fluid on ground when I backed out, I dont know if it's oil or transmission fluid.
View 1 RepliesFor those of us who owns 1988 735IL and battery died and doors are locked and tried to lift the passenger door and turn the key 100 times to engage emergency unlock and did not work below solution works good.
FYI the trunk unlocks and opens with the key by just placing the key and turning then push the button
This my friend is ingenius tried it after I've been working to unlock the door with a dead battery for 6 hours even AAA don't have a clue (Slim Jim is discontinued due to side airbag. Lock smith would do the same by turning the key while lever is up position but the lock knob button needs to come up about an inch and a quarter. Good luck with that.
Solution I did
- open the trunk by with the key. Yes the trunk will open
- pry the trunk light and locate positive and negative post.
- remove the electronic connector protector
- removing bulb not necessary
- Jump Start device 300AMP or a 12 Volt power source for cars
- simple wire from an old electronic device
- have to wires for red and black
- Stripped it to expose metal then connect positive and negative to the trunk light connector (pay attention red and black) goes to red and black of the battery source
- set polarity on the jump start 300amp gadget
- it gives enough juice to the system
- then turn the key on the passenger/driver key
- it works
is it good practice to shift to neutral, while driving downhill on automatic transmission? the owner manual does not recommend, would like to know why.it makes sense to save gas, while doing this. (i used to do it while driving manual)

I've got a 1990 ford ranger 4.0 auto trans front transmission seal went bad, I've got everything unbolted abs ready to come put but the trans won't come over top of the front cross member, what could be the problem on why it won't come out?

He said that when he drives and the rpms are up he said he gets a grinding noise it doesn't matter what gear 1rst or 5th. He think throw out bearing but no noises at all until the rpms are up there. I was think internal like shift fork but don't know.
View 4 RepliesI got this 89 ranger xlt with a 2.9 and automatic transmission. I mainly bought it because it was in such good shape and I was planning on putting a 5.0 in it. everything works on it. the a/c, radio, lights and it runs real nice. the only problem it has is it shifts pretty hard going into second gear. every once in a while it will shift smoothly into second but only like once or twice a day. he said he had recently changed the trans filter and fluid and the fluid does not smell burnt.
View 7 RepliesSo here in Wisconsin for the last two weeks we have had nothing but ice. That being said, I have a '96 ranger 3.0L, automatic transmission, 4x4. 4 wheel is inoperable at the moment, that's a different story. Here's my question: with the ice, there has been a lot of tire spinning at high RPM's, the other day, I was again stuck on the ice and rocked back and forth had some pushers, thought we were getting somewhere but I went to shift gears and all of a sudden had nothing. No Reverse, Drive, OD, L, 2. Did I blow my tranny? There was no noise or grinding, but the OD light seems to blink. Is there something I can check or look at?

View 6 RepliesI have a 2012 Avalon Limited with the automatic temperature control. It used to be that the recirculation function was controlled automatically. The recirculation function would come on when ever the outside temp was hot enough and the inside temp setting was low enough. This is also how my 2000 Avalon XLS works and how my 2014 Tundra 1794 Edition works. Both have the automatic air conditioning system. Now the recirculation function must be turned on manually in order for it work. This has just been happening for the last 3-4 months. The dealer service writer tells me that all 2010 through 2012 Avalons with the automatic temp control Air Conditioning require the recirculation function to be controlled manually. Is this really true?
The manual makes no mention of this requirement to control the recirculation function manually. The manual says that the recirculation function MAY be controlled manually, but, when the A/C is on automatic temp control, the recirculation function is turned on and off by the A/C, depending upon the outside air temperature and the interior vehicle temp setting chosen on the A/C front panel.
I was wondering if it would be just a plug and play to exchange manual a/c controls to automatic climate control thingie. Id expect CAN coding but im just wondering if i could just bolt on and code or is there way much more to it like additional control module and what not .... maybe even not possible at all.
View 2 RepliesI'm driving home from work around 10:15pm and driving around 45mph; I switch my car from the manual mode to automatic and all of a sudden my car skids 40 feet and just stops. No lights on the dash, just completely stops and locks up the rear tires. I am in the middle of the road at this point and try to restart the car and put it into drive and the car just jolts forward and makes a grinding noise. I was still in shock at the moment, and a cop pulls behind me and asks me what is going on and I tell him the situation. He says he needs to call a tow truck to move the car. I brought it home and now I don't know what to do. The car is a lexus 2007 gs350 awd with about 104k miles, I don't think the car should just stop while driving 45 mph and come to a skidding stop.

View 17 RepliesWhen I put my key in the ignition, I cannot turn the key. I tried putting a small amount of WD40 in the ignition and turning the wheel back and forth while trying to start, but all that did was make my key greasy and my wheel lock up. I've tried getting a new key made from Lowes and Home Depot, but their keys are too wide and will not fit in the keyholes. The only thing I am down to is replacing the ignition switch completely but I'd rather do that as a last resort because my car has had a big problem every week (alternator gone, new wheels, new master cylinder, new rotors/brakes). I haven't explored yet? And also, if it comes down to replacing the ignition switch, how would I do that without being able to turn the key?
